Su Casa: Needlepoint, Antiques and Art

R

ecently, in an effort to take my brain off “hold,” I decided to venture beyond painting and reading: I enrolled in classes for both needlepoint and bridge.

As for the needlepoint, I remembered that I had seen something, somewhere, about a needlepoint studio in The Paseo, so off I went. The following week I joined a pillow sampler class at the charmingly eclectic Su Casa Needlepoint, Antiques and Art. Su Casa just celebrated its oneyear anniversary, but its owners, Lin Sanchez and her mother Liz McGuinness, have been working together in interior design for more than 10 years.

Located at 3016 Paseo, this charming shop offers needlepoint, antiques and art, many of which could easily make it from Su Casa to su casa. They have lovely contemporary needlepoint items that you would actually be proud to have in your home. It’s not the sort of stuff you see in some of the big-box craft stores or in your Great-Aunt Lucy’s house.

“Our guiding principle here is that there’s nothing in the shop that we wouldn’t have in our own homes,” Lin says.

There are many spectacularly colorful Indian throws that would look great on the corner of a sofa or displayed on your wall,

along with the great artwork from our very own talented neighbor Pam Klepper.

Debbie Nauser is represented as well with some of her fabulous hand crafted greeting cards for those special people in your life.

According to Lin, Su Casa is the first needlepoint shop in Oklahoma City in quite a few years. “Stitchers from all over are beginning to discover that we’re here,” she says. “They like to be able to touch what they’re working with.”

Su Casa offers classes not only in needlepoint, but also in beadwork and occasionally mahjong. A number of classes will start after the first of the year.

In this super comfy little shop where beautiful music plays softly in the background and you have lovely refreshments, you can very easily tune out the outside world and feel right at home in Su Casa. I really need this right now … because bridge lessons are an entirely different story indeed!

Su Casa opens Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m. It closes Tuesday through Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. The store is closed Sunday and Monday. Su Casa can be reached at 405601-9075.

A

hhhh … the Holidays … or Holidaze.

I don’t know about you, but it seems as if Oct. 31 to Dec. 31 moves so fast that only by mid-January I am beginning to catch my breath. Holiday parties, family gettogethers, school programs, shopping, cooking … whew. And, oh yes, pesky jobs, school and volunteering are still going strong, making all of our plates full and overflowing.

Then January hits, and it’s as if the world slows to a snail’s pace. We are left with the unenviable chore of cleaning up and, oh yes, paying for the last two months of frivolity both on our waistline and our bank accounts. And don’t even mention the dreaded New Year’s resolution quandary.

As I write this, I am in the midst of this celebratory time. And while I do enjoy all these parties and activities, I look forward to a bit of a slowdown.

I’d like to watch a movie or two … or perhaps start at least one of the five books on my bedside table.

Our neighborhood does take a bit of a break before our Progressive Dinner, usually held in February. After that, Easter is just around the corner. With all of these social events taking our attention, it is easy to miss two ongoing functions that never take a break in our neighborhood: security, and landscaping care and maintenance.

So at this slower, maybe even more reflective time of year, I encourage you to notice these ongoing functions and consider (if you are not already) joining security and submitting or renewing your neighborhood dues. These two vital functions that both beautify our neighborhood and make it safe will not only continue but also thrive with more neighborhood participation. (Look for reminders in coming Chronicle articles.)

Being Neighborly in the Heights

W

hat makes the Crown HeightsEdgemere Heights neighborhood stand out to so many Oklahoma City citizens? Is it the beautiful homes?

The nice lawns? The great trees? The nighttime lighting? The large parks?

Most other neighborhoods can claim one or more of the above. But the thing thatstands out above all our challenges is neighborliness! Giving of our time and energy makes CH-EH a great place to live.

Halloween 2017 made being neighborly stand out. Many streets turned on porch lights and gave out thousands of pieces of candy to trickor-treaters.

A good example of being neighborly is presented every year by NW 39th Street from Shartel to Western.

Several things have progressed in the last 10 years. The traffic from Classen and Western on NW 39th has increased. Since we had more than 700 kids on the street five years ago and cars continued to race down the street, this year we purchased a permit from the city to close the street from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

We also decided to follow the “lights out” time limit and leave porch lights burning until 8 p.m. We asked out neighbors to abide by these rules. Some neighborhood members reminded those with lights on after 8 p.m. to turn them off. Anyone still roaming the street was reminded of the 8 p.m. curfew. By 8:20, the street was empty except for local parties. Our count of trick-or-treaters was 1,440 persons mounting porch steps.

This neighborhood spirit of CH-EH is felt by many outside the area. A case in point was a lady I visited in Nichols Hills just before Halloween 2016.

“Do you have a large number of trick-or-treaters for Halloween?” I asked her. “We don’t give out treats!” she answered.

“So what do you do with your five children?” I asked.

“We take them to Crown Heights, especially 39th Street,” she replied.

“It’s so safe, the people are friendly,

and my kids love it for the happiness of everyone in the streets.”

Being neighborly makes Crown Heights-Edgemere Heights stand out in OKC. Thank you to everyone who’s been a good neighbor!”

Vada Boutique: All Things Oklahoma

ada Boutique at 4327 N. Western Ave. is one of the newest businesses near Crown HeightsEdgemere Heights. Owned by Shelia and Jeff Wallar, Vada offers a mix of clothing, gifts and accessories.

The boutique is named for Shelia’s great grandmother Vada (pronounced VAY-da), whose photo occupies a place of honor on the shop’s south wall.

In addition to an assortment of sophisticated women’s fashions, Vada offers CC Beanies, Melissa & Doug toys, and OU/OSU/Thunder apparel. “We stock sizes from XS to 4X,” Shelia says.

“We have clothes for men, kids and babies, too.”

Vada also offers a variety of products made in Oklahoma: goat milk soaps, candles, and locally made jewelry, as well as Sugar Skull Oklahoma-themed T-shirts and sweatshirts.

Starting this year, the Wallars are opening the second floor of Vada to booth rentals. They’re also renovating the north end of the building, already the home of Wine & Palette painting classes, for use as an event space for parties, baby showers and more.

The space has already hosted the Wizards on Western crowd, selling out butter beer before the day was done.

Vada moved in the spring of 2017 from Midwest City to Western Avenue to capitalize on the district’s walk-by shoppers, according to Shelia. The move has since translated into better sales as well.

Jeff adds that Vada may not be as cheap as big-box retailers, but the merchandise is unique and the prices reasonable. “We’re between Paseo and

Meet our board member: Robert W. “Bob” White

ob White has lived most of his adult life in Crown Heights and is one of the neighborhood’s staunchest supporters. This February, he will have resided at 715 NW 39th St. for 53 years.

You will find Bob enjoying virtually every association event, but the Fourth of July celebration is his favorite.

Bob is retired, having served as chairman of Cardinal Paper Company and Lincoln National Bank.

His daughter Pati, also an association member, resides in Edgemere Heights.

Bob appreciates the neighborhood’s great neighbors, strong security and location convenient to all parts of the city.

Bob has been one of the biggest supporters of the association’s improvement foundation, Crown Heights–Edgemere Heights Improvement Inc., with his generous

Less crime in neighborhood thanks to security

N

otice that the Crown HeightsEdgemere Heights report by the Oklahoma City Police Department covers more than CH-EH. Our security company is not responsible for incidents and police reports on NW 36th Street (auto accidents) or on Western. This leaves four incidents in the CH-EH interior during one month versus 10 or more in neighboring areas. For this, CH-EH can be proud!

During the last neighborhood board meeting, the board discussed what it can do to help security in the neighborhood. If you wish to hear more, contact a CH-EH Board member.

Also, three CH-EH neighbors complained about persons roaming the area and knocking on doors to sell products or services. When asked if they had a permit, two said they did not need a permit to sell door to door.

Section 3 of the Oklahoma City statutes says any person selling door to door must have a city permit, except for grade-school students, religious teachers or charity groups. This does not include people putting business tags on your front door. If a person persists with no permit, call security and someone will ask the person to leave the neighborhood.

Fall is a great time for persons traveling our streets to look for pawnable items. Watch what you leave in your truck or auto while parked on the streets. A friend bought a new ladder and left it in his truck while parked on the street. He spent 10 minutes behind a home checking out a project. When he came back to his pickup, the ladder was gone. This could also happen in CH-EH. Prepare for these incidents not to happen in our neighborhood.

OCPD Reports Few Cases Oklahoma City Police Department reported little activity in Crown Heights and Edgemere Heights for the month of September. The incidents reported were: • A civil matter in the 600 block of NW 40th Street • A fraud case in the 600 block of NW 38th Street • A towed vehicle in the 1000 block of NW 42nd Street • A stolen motorcycle in the 800 block of NW 38th Street The patrols of the Association’s security association are a major factor in keeping criminal activity to a minimum in our neighborhood.

Someplace Else Deli brings Jersey to OKC

W

hen David and Peggy Carty opened the Someplace Else deli and bakery in 1976 near the CH-EH neighborhoods, it was far from a sure thing. David had grown up in New Jersey and wanted to create a deli like the ones back home.

“It was really unique when we opened it,” Peggy says. “Nobody (in Oklahoma City) had ever seen anything like this.”

The Cartys were in their early 20s, fresh out of Oklahoma City University

— and, in Peggy’s words, “kind of chicken to open it. It took us a while to get up our nerve.” But they did open it.

That was 41 years ago. Today, Someplace Else, 2310 N. Western Ave., is an Oklahoma City institution and one of the best Jersey-style delis in the area.

“We bake everything from scratch, make all our own breads and cookies, cinnamon rolls, everything,” Carty says. “That makes a big difference.

Everything’s fresh.”

Someplace Else’s most popular menu items are the Italian sub, an avocado-withcream-cheese sandwich … and, of course, their Reuben sandwiches.

Someplace Else also offers

veggie and vegan sandwiches as a nod to the college crowd down the street.

Vegetarian food has been part of the menu since the deli opened. “There were a lot of hippies back then,” Peggy says with a smile.

The deli also sells cookies and other baked goods, all made in-house. Peggy’s favorite is the chocolate sugar cookies.

Someplace Else’s busiest time has always been around lunch, but what constitutes lunch has changed over the years, starting somewhat later in the day. Peggy attributes that change to more people working from home, not tied to an employer’s schedule.

Someplace Else is open 7 a.m.6:30 p.m. weekdays, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Saturdays and closed Sundays.

Chronicle Kids Maddie McClurg

M

addie McClurg is a 16-year-old sophomore at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. Maddie has a little brother named Harry who is 13 and attends Westminster Middle School. They have lived in Crown Heights for only about 6 months now, but already Maddie said “She loves it!”

Maddie plays basketball both for McGuinness and a club team outside of school, and she said, “I love every second of it.” In the summer, she loves to go to the pool and hang out with her friends.

Maddie also loves to travel during the summer, and her favorite place to travel to is New York City. She said she went there with her family a few years ago. She would love to go back because it was so much fun! Maddie’s favorite sports team to watch is the Thunder!

Now you know a little bit about Maddie McClurg. You should meet her some time!

Your contributions support many neighborhood benefits

id you know that Crown Heights and Edgemere Heights are served by three separate nonprofit corporations? They were formed to provide different services and benefits to the neighborhood.

Crown Heights-Edgemere Heights Homeowners Association, Inc. was incorporated in 1973. Its purpose is to work toward community betterment and improvement, sponsoring community activity and encouraging us to know our neighborhood and our neighbors.

The homeowners association sponsors picnics, parades, functions and celebrations, as well as occasionally involving itself in zoning and other quasi-political activities.

Crown Heights – Edgemere Heights Improvement, Inc. was incorporated in 1980. The improvement corporation is more altruistic in its endeavors and has been classified by the IRS as a charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As its application for tax-exemption states, its activities are limited to: Urging community residents to clean and repair private property; encouraging realtors to use nondiscriminatory sales practices in the buying and selling of homes; providing general information on

methods of counteracting housing deterioration and ways of improving homes; crime prevention activities; sponsoring of clean-up campaigns with regard to, and generally encouraging a high level of maintenance of the public park and median strip areas within the community; the making of improvements to these public park areas; the provision of markers displaying the historical preservation designation of the Crown Heights portion of the community; and taking survey to determine the adequacy of schools and recreation facilities in the area.”

CH-EH Security Corporation was incorporated in 1986. Its purpose is to raise funds to provide security services for the association area and to contact with security companies to provide those services. The CH-EH Security Corporation will be discussed in a future article.

Despite the differences in purposes, there are several aspects of the homeowners association and the improvement corporation that are similar in nature. Their geographic scope is the same, their by-laws are similar, their annual meetings are held on the same date, and there is crossover of their officers and directors.

But there is another important difference. Donations to the improvement corporation are deductible for income and estate tax purposes, while donations to the homeowners association are not.

When you pay your annual dues and contributions, $25 goes to the homeowners association to fund its activities and the balance goes to the improvement corporation for its activities which importantly include park, median and entryway landscaping, watering and improvements. It also installs and maintains street lamps and preservation markers.

The improvement corporation maintains an endowment fund within the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. The foundation invests the money on the association’s behalf and otherwise manages the fund.

CH-EH residents pay their annual dues and improvement contribution on a calendar year basis. If you have not yet paid your 2017 dues and contribution, be sure to do so before December 31 to take advantage of this year’s deduction on your income taxes. Association Treasurer Judy Krueger has mailed notices to those whose 2017 dues and contributions have not been received.

If you haven’t paid your 2017 dues and contribution yet, Dec. 31 is the deadline to get a 2017 income tax deduction!

Recipes in the Heights Hot Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats

1 (3 pound) beef chuck roast 1 (12 ounce) bottle Midwestern Sweet Barbecue Sauce 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon coarse black Malabar pepper

Instructions

Place chuck roast in your slow cooker, pour barbecue sauce on top and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook on high for 6 hours, low for 8 hours, or until roast is tender and falling apart.

Serving Suggestions

Notes

A light sprinkle of hard cheese such as Parmigiano-Reggiano before baking can be a sharp and savory addition to this already delicious bread.

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Stir together all ingredients (except bread) until thoroughly combined. Spread seasoned butter onto bread slices and bake for about 10 minutes or until bread is just turning golden brown around the edges.

This recipe was adapted from the original Rice Krispies Treats recipe, and produces a sticky, dense mixture. If you like your treats more gooey, try adding an additional 1 tablespoon butter and 1 to 2 cups marshmallows to your initial mixture.

Directions

Combine butter, bag of marshmallows and hot chocolate mix in a large microwavesafe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between, until marshmallows and butter are melted. Stir in cereal until mixture is well coated. Transfer to an 8-inch-by-8-inch pan lined with parchment paper. Top with mini marshmallows and chocolate chips if using. Let set for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Serve with any of your favorite barbecue or pot roast sides: corn on the cob, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, etc.

4 ounces mascarpone cheese 2 ounces goat cheese 1 1/2 teaspoons Georgia Peach Spice, divided 3 slices prosciutto 4 firm but ripe peaches, halved 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tsp. Maldon sea salt 3 sprigs of mint, roughly chopped

Directions

Mix mascarpone cheese and goat cheese with 1 teaspoon of the Georgia Peach Spice and set aside. Preheat a well-oiled grill to medium-high. Lay prosciutto slices on a small piece of foil and place on the grill. Turn pieces over every few minutes until just crisp.

Remove from grill, let cool then roughly chop.

Meanwhile, toss peach halves in olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Grill peaches flesh side down for about 3 to 5 min. then turn over and cook for 1 more min. They should have nice grill marks but still be firm enough to keep their shape. Remove peaches from grill, arrange on a platter and sprinkle with remaining ½ teaspoon Georgia Peach Spice. Top each half with a small scoop of the spiced cheese and sprinkle with crispy prosciutto and fresh mint.

Serving suggestions

Great as a handheld appetizer. Serve over greens with balsamic vinegar and olive oil for a salad course.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1/4 teaspoon dehydrated minced garlic (or 2 cloves fresh garlic, chopped) 2 carrots, cut into 1/4-inch rounds 2 parsnips, cut into 1/4-inch rounds 1/2 teaspoon French fleur de sel sea salt 1 cup dried farro, rinsed 2 fines herb bouillon cubes, dissolved in 4 cups hot water to make a broth (or 4 cups of your favorite broth) 1 (14.5 ounces) can diced tomatoes 1 1/2 tablespoons French Style Bouquet Garni 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 Turkish bay leaves 1 bunch kale, torn into bite-sized pieces 2 to 4 cups water

Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add onions and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are translucent, about 5 min. (Note from recipe author: While onions and garlic cook, I do the “chop and drop” method, peeling and cutting the carrot and parsnip and adding them to the cooking onions as I go. Otherwise, add the prepared carrots and parsnips with the onion.) Add French fleur de sel and farro; stir until coated in oil, about 1 min. Add broth, tomatoes, French Style Bouquet Garni, red pepper flakes and bay leaves. Bring to a boil.

Cover and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 20 min. Add kale and water if needed (suggest 1 cup). Cover and simmer for 10 more min.

Add beans and more water if needed (suggest another 1 cup). Cover and simmer for 10 more min. Check farro texture and soup flavor.

Continue cooking, if needed, to get farro to your preferred texture. Add additional water (or broth) to thin the soup if desired.

Serving Suggestions

Serve topped with parsley and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Great with a finishing dash of Italian black truffle sea salt. This is a great main course; just add a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine.
