Keep homeowner’s policy up to date ecord low interest rates and endless financing options have sent home values through the roof – up 8.5 percent from first quarter last year. If you’re not buying, chances are you’re making home improvements. One upgrade you may be forgetting is the one that helps protect you financially should your house be damaged or destroyed – homeowner’s insurance. The Census Bureau reports construction costs are rising on average 3.5 percent annually. Depending on the cost to rebuild in your area, the cost to rebuild your home could be significantly more than the price of your home when you bought it. Experts say to help keep your home and its contents covered, conduct an annual review of your homeowner’s policy, documenting all home improvements. Although your premiums could rise, it might also be a good idea to increase your coverage as you invest more on home improvements. If you do, protective devices such as smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, burglar alarms and fire-proof construction materials may help lower your premium. Contact your Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company agent to conduct an annual review of your homeowner’s policy

IRS ruling helps farmers to offset healthcare costs ith health insurance rates climbing at a double-digit pace for the fifth consecutive year, family farmers are struggling to provide their families with essential health insurance. A little known Internal Revenue Service Ruling, Section 105, provides family farmers with a tax deduction that could save thousands in medical expenses. “Section 105 Medical Reimbursement Plans provide farmers with the financial relief they need to combat rising healthcare costs,” said Dan Rashke, chief operating officer of Total Administrative Services Corporation (TASC), the nation’s largest administrator of Section 105 plans. Section 105 Plans, such as TASC’s AgriPlan, allow family farmers who are able to legitimately employ his or her spouse a 100 percent tax deduction for monies spent on healthcare premiums and non-insured medical expenses (e.g. vision and dental expenses). This is a step above what the federal government is currently offering. Under federal regulations, self-employed individuals can deduct 100 percent of their health insurance premiums. AgriPlan covers expenses for health insurance and uninsured medical, dental, and vision care expenses as well as premiums for dental insurance, longterm care insurance, life, and disability income insurance for eligible employees and their families. AgriPlan deductions are available at federal, state, and social security tax levels. The premium deductions are available at the federal tax level only; state and social security taxes are not impacted. TASC provides over 50,000 sole proprietors, family farmers and small business owners nationwide with innovative, tax advantaged employee benefit programs. U.S. ag exports expected to reach record $62 billion he United States Department of Agriculture’s final export forecast for fiscal year 2004 indicates sales are expected to reach $62 billion, $5.8 billion more than last year. This represents the highest sales ever, eclipsing the old record of $59.8 billion set in fiscal year 1996. This forecast
T 32 • Oklahoma Country • Fall 2004
is up $500 million from May’s estimate largely due to stronger-than-expected cotton, beef and pork exports. “The export performance for this year confirms that our efforts to expand economic opportunities for our nation’s ranchers and farmers are working,” said Veneman. “Moreover, U.S. agricultural trade supports close to a million American jobs, so this record benefits the entire American economy. Our goal in the months ahead will be to expand trade possibilities even more through the World Trade Organization and other negotiations.” Canada remains the No. 1 market for U.S. agricultural products with exports estimated at $9.6 billion, followed by Japan at $8.9 billion and Mexico at $8.6 billion. In fiscal year 2004, Asia is projected to be the United States’ largest regional market, with sales there expected to reach $24.5 billion. This compares to $23.3 billion forecast to be shipped to markets in the Western Hemisphere. Exports to China are expected to reach $6 billion, up from $3.5 billion last year. China now is the leading importer of U.S. cotton and soybeans, and also imports large quantities of U.S. wheat and hides and skins. USDA also released its initial forecast for fiscal year 2005, placing sales for next year at $57.5 billion. The decline in value from this year
is mainly due to increased competition and lower prices expected for cotton, wheat and soybeans. The export volume of major bulk commodities actually is forecast to rise 2.1 million tons to 118.7 million tons, with increases for corn and
soybeans more than offsetting decreases for wheat and cotton. Horticultural product sales are expected to reach a record $13.8 billion in 2005, with key markets being Canada, Mexico, several Asian countries and Europe.
