MAKE ARCHITECTS COMPETITION

During the first couple of months was also part of a group that attended a MAKE competition against architecture students from other universities.

Each group was given a word to aim to design a concept for. The aim was sustainability and how we can improve cities to make them more sustainable and better for the environment.

My groups main objective was thinking of a way of introducing greenery to the future cities.

We came up with the idea of having pods, that could be attached to any type of building in a city environment which would be able to be used either for growing plans like a plot, spaces for relaxed environment or maybe a pod that can just be used for cleaning air quality.

Feeding Pod

The pods will use aquaponics to grow fruits and vegetables for consumption by the occupants of the buildings where the pods are attached.

The process will be a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics, where fish such as tilapia and koi are fed and their excrement is then collected.

The water is then pumped and used to provide nutrients to the plants growing without the need of using soil.

These pods are for feeding the city.

Cleaning Pod

These pods will house bio-reactors which will be used to cultivate microalgae. The algae is then used to clean the pollution in the surrounding air.

Algae’s ability to absorb and remove toxic gasses such as carbon dioxide is 10 times higher than large trees as their whole bodies are photosynthetic.

The LED lighting used to encourage the growth of the algae can also be used to light up the city streets at night.

These pods are for reducing air pollution.

Calming Pod

These pods will have spaces such as gardens including trees. They will have the aim of bringing the people in the cities closer to nature.

They will provide space for people to be able to take a deep breath and pause during hectic routines. Calming pods could be the ideal space for calming an intense day.

These pods are for providing a space to be calm.
