According to new research, there has been an impressive increase in the number of people participating and watching water sports. Annual Water Sports Participation Survey 2021 shows that approximately 11.8m people took part in one or more boating activities in the UK alone. This numnber has almost doubled since 2020. As intrest grows, also is the pressing need for additional facilities and stadiums to accommodate the rising demand. From coastal regions to inland lakes, communities are recognizing the economic and recreational potential of water sports and are eager to invest in infrastructure to support these activities. Constructing more venues and facilities not only fosters healthy lifestyles but also stimulates tourism and local economies. Meeting the increasing demand for water sports facilities will ensure that enthusiasts of all skill levels have access to safe and enjoyable experiences on the water.
Barcelona was once known as the city that turned its back on water, this new water sport development would help embrace the waterfront.
Barcelona emerges as the ideal location for the water sports venue, not only as the host city for the prestigious America’s Cup in 2024 but also due to its intrinsic passion for water sports and favorable climate conditions.
Renowned for its vibrant waterfront and bustling maritime culture, Barcelona has long been a magnet for sailors, surfers, and water sports enthusiasts alike. The city’s love affair with aquatic activities is complemented by its Mediterranean climate, boasting mild winters and sun-drenched summers, ensuring that the venue remains
operational and accessible year-round. With its irresistible blend of passion, climate, and coastal charm, Barcelona stands poised to solidify its status as a premier destination for water sports, captivating athletes and spectators from around the globe.
Surfing, sailing, open water swimming, and rowing stand out as some of the most beloved water sports worldwide, captivating enthusiasts with their unique blend of athleticism and connection to nature. As demand surges for these activities, it’s imperative that water sports venues cater to their specific needs, particularly in accommodating sailing, given its prominence in events like the America’s Cup. The venue’s infrastructure must be optimized to host elite sailing competitions while also providing facilities for training and recreational sailing year-round. Moreover, the expansive open water stretch utilized for sailing competitions presents an ideal setting for a myriad of additional water sports activities, such as windsurfing and wakeboarding. By diversifying the offerings of the venue to encompass a broader range of water sports, organizers can foster a vibrant community of athletes and enthusiasts while maximizing the venue’s potential as a hub for aquatic recreation and competition
