Economic barriers, lack of insurance, and limited transportation options make it nearly impossible for some residents to get the care they need.

Events like OkMOM don’t solve these systemic problems alone, but they do shine a light on them, and they remind us that behind every statistic are people who deserve care, dignity, and hope.

The event also helps surface gaps in care that we, as a profession and as advocates, must continue to address together.

Each year, the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy reminds us of what’s best about our profession: compassion, service, and community. When hundreds of volunteers unite under one roof to provide free dental care to Oklahomans in need, we see the heart of dentistry at work. I’m honored to serve as the 2026 OkMOM Event Chair, and I invite every dentist, hygienist, assistant, and community member to join us February 6–7 in Enid, Oklahoma, for another unforgettable event.

The 2026 event in Enid is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than any one practice or clinic.

We’ll transform the Stride Bank Center into a fully operational dental facility with more than 1,000 dental professionals and general volunteers offering no-cost oral health services.

Volunteers will staff treatment areas providing cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and even some root canals and partials to anyone who walks through the door, no questions asked and with no pre-registration required.

Whether you’ve volunteered before or are considering it for the first time, I can assure you: there’s no experience like OkMOM. STATE ASSOCIATION MobileSmiles Program Expands to Guymon Under the wide-open skies of the Oklahoma Panhandle, community leaders, legislators, dentists, educators, and healthcare partners gathered to celebrate a milestone more than a decade in the making: the opening of the first MobileSmiles Oklahoma home site in Guymon.

Hosted outdoors beside the MobileSmiles clinic, the event marked a major expansion of the Oklahoma Dental Foundation and OU College of Dentistry collaboration of a statewide oral-health mission and a historic first for the Panhandle region. The new Guymon site - made possible with a unique partnership of the Memorial Hospital of Texas County, and the leadership of the OU College of Dentistry, the Oklahoma Dental Foundation and the Oklahoma Dental Association. It will serve as a permanent home base for delivering preventive and restorative dental services across northwest Oklahoma.

While support and momentum at the Capitol grows for dentistry, the reality is that many challenges lie ahead for meaningful reform. As one of the few remaining “main street” professions employing thousands of Oklahomans, lawmakers are seeing and hearing the challenges that continue to plague dentists and their patients across the state. The rising cost of all forms of insurance is placing a significant burden on families across the state.

In Oklahoma, these challenges are even more pronounced, forcing many families to forgo essential health and dental coverage, an issue that inevitably leads to unhealthier outcomes.

STATE ASSOCIATION ODA Reestablishes New Dentist Committee The Oklahoma Dental Association recently reestablished its New Dentist Committee for member dentists who have been out of dental school less than 10 years. The committee aims to create programs for new dentists and bring ideas and recommendations that reflect the shared experiences of early-career dentists to the Association's larger councils and task forces.

As this energized committee steps forward, they bring with them not only professional insight, but also the individual passions, quirks, and stories that shape who they are outside of work. Here’s a look at the nine dentists leading this new initiative—through five questions they each selected to answer from a longer set.

The nine-member group is chaired by Dr. Meet the 2025 ODA New Dentist Committee Lauren Parker, the ODA’s New Dentist Trustee. Their mission is to strengthen Dr. Lauren Parker, Chair (Central) the professional and personal support systems that help new dentists thrive.

The New Dentist Committee has identified several goals for this year, including: •

Creating continuing education courses specifically for new dentists

Expanding networking opportunities to help members build professional and personal relationships

Providing input to ODA committees, including the workforce task force, CE committee, and annual meeting committee.

The term ‘lifestyle’ can be polysemous in that it reaches into many areas. We can probably all agree that lifestyle incorporates interests, behaviors, and tastes that represent a manner for individual or group living.

COVER STORY Creative Lens: Dr. Andrew Guthrie turns his wildlife photography hobby into a published work The journey from casual picture-taker to published photographer can be hard to define, but for Oklahoma pediatric dentist Dr. Andrew Guthrie, the path has unfolded gradually over a lifetime.

In an era when nearly anyone with a smartphone can claim the title of photographer, Guthrie’s connection to the craft traces back to childhood— particularly to the marathon Christmas photo sessions organized by his late father, Dr. T.J. Guthrie. Family portraits were shot on film, four 36-exposure rolls at a time, with results revealed only after a week-long wait at the developer.

One family photo remains legendary among relatives: a winter portrait staged outside a frost-covered window. As the family posed, young Guthrie pressed his lips to the icy glass, freezing his skin to the pane in a scene reminiscent of the holiday classic A Christmas Story. That year’s Christmas card featured him with rosy lips that were, in reality, the result of his unfortunate experiment. Despite the comedic chaos of these annual sessions, they created a cherished tradition. The resulting images lined the stairwell of the family home, marking the progression of each passing year.

COVER STORY, continued In the fall of 2023, during one of these outings, he encountered Dr. Melanie Emerson, whom Guthrie had met when she was a dental student and he was teaching in the pre-doctoral pediatric dental clinic at Oklahoma University College of Dentistry. Now an avid wildlife photographer herself, Emerson invited him to join a small group of photographers on a trip to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge to capture images of the sandhill crane migration.

Initially intimidated by the skill level of Emerson and her colleagues, Guthrie quickly found himself welcomed into what he describes as a supportive “Bird Nerd tribe.” The group has since taken additional day trips to the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge and areas west of Oklahoma City, consistently returning with photos of which they are proud.

Treatment Provided: A 60-year-old male presented to the clinic 4 days after sustaining facial blunt force trauma. He was struck in the face with a metal pipe, resulting in the following injuries: •

Mobility of teeth #7 (class I), #8 (class II), and #10 (class II)

Following manufacturer guidelines, Ribbond® was bonded to the lingual surfaces of teeth #7–#11 for semi-rigid stabilization (without interproximal adhesion). A temporary pontic for tooth #9 was free-hand sculpted from packable composite, contoured, polished, and bonded to the Ribbond® framework.

Since its founding in 1976, this distinguished program has shaped the careers of nearly 350 dental students, offering hands-on experience in pediatric care and culminating each year with what has become a signature tradition: the presentation of pediatric dental cases alongside the Oklahoma Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Today known as the MathewsonRobertson Pediatric Dentistry Honors Day, this annual gathering has grown into a celebrated event that brings together students, faculty, and alumni

ADA WINS IN 2025 From fighting for water fluoridation to introducing new ways to advance your patient care, your membership makes an impact on the issues most important to the profession.

We’re excited to share some of our most notable accomplishments from the first half of 2025.

Community Water Fluoridation • Worked closely with stakeholders in conjunction with state dental societies to help advocates for fluoridation succeed in convincing most legislatures to reject proposals to end or limit community water fluoridation.

• Advocated for Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) and seven other co-sponsors to develop and introduce the Protect our Treatment for Enamel, Erosion and Tooth Health Act (TEETH Act).

The measure would require the EPA to commission an independent, rapid-response evidence review from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine before proposing updated fluoridation recommendations.

• Stood up in support for fluoride supplements at the FDA’s public meeting organized by the Reagan Udall Foundation to defend fluoride access for children.

• Filed an amicus brief in support of the EPA. The EPA disagrees with the court’s decision that water fluoridation may present an unreasonable public health risk and focuses on the clear legal errors the trial court made in reaching its decision, requiring reversal. The ADA and the EPA are urging the court to reverse the decision from September 2024.

• Released the 2025 Fluoridation Facts e-book, a free resource to help bring science-backed information into fluoride conversations. The e-book has been accessed more than 34,000 times.

• Provided information on ADA social channels about the safety and efficacy of fluoride – great for sharing with patients, the general public and even lawmakers. Like, love, share or DM us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube.

Advocacy • Introduced or supported 18 bills at the federal level during the first half of 2025 to expand the oral health care workforce, enhance access to care and improve the dental insurance landscape.

• Helped ensure that “The One Big Beautiful Bill” included tax wins for dental practices, including the full restoration of the pass-through entity tax deduction. Other favorable tax provisions for dental practices include a permanent 20 percent small business income deduction, a restoration of full bonus depreciation, new domestic research deductions and a 21 percent corporate tax rate.

• Sent a letter to Metlife seeking clarification of its practices, causing MetLife to change its recoupment policy.

• Supported state dental societies in successfully passing three new laws on dental loss ratio in 2025, bringing the number of states with recent enactments up to 13.

Continuing Education • Introduced 29+ new CE courses, adding to a library of over 500 hours of courses. New CE explores topics including infection control, fluoride, cannabis, coding, oral cancer and endodontics.

• Launched the ADA CE online course DEA MATE Act Opioid Prescriber Compliance Training (Self-Guided E-Learning Course) in July 2024. Just in 2025, the ADA has issued 15,323 CE credits for this course alone.

Workforce • Encouraged policy allowing for internationally trained dentists who pass the hygiene boards to be licensed as hygienists, with Massachusetts and Connecticut enacting such legislation.

• Authored the Dental Access Model Act at ALEC, leading to Arizona’s authorization of the training and practice of Oral Preventive Assistants and other states considering similar legislation based on the model act.

• Helped remove barriers for dentists in twelve states by supporting the enactment of legislation to participate in the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact (DDH Compact), furthering license portability for dentists and hygienists.

Scientific and Clinical Excellence • Introduced the new ADA Living Guideline Program. By proactively and continuously monitoring new evidence and data, individual guideline recommendations can be updated regularly.

• Received $10.99 million to advance oral health research, making the ADA Forsyth Institute the fourth-highest NIDCRfunded U.S. dental institution during the 2024 fiscal year.

• Introduced CDT 2026, featuring an unprecedented 60 changes, including 31 new codes, enabling dentists and staff to more accurately document and report procedures. Changes include new and revised codes for administration of anesthesia; collection, preparation and analysis of saliva testing; duplication of complete denture; testing for a cracked tooth; photobiomodulation therapy; scaling and debridement implant presence of peri-implantitis and more.

• Digitized our ADA Dentist Well-Being Programs Directory, making it easier than ever to find peer support and wellness resources to support dentists during times of need.

• Expanded free access to all dentists, students (dental and dental team member students) and dental team members to the anonymous, validated risk assessment invented by Mayo Clinic for healthcare professionals with the Well-Being Index.

• Launched the ADA Delegated Credentialing Service in early 2025, powered by the LightSpun platform, to leverage artificial intelligence and automation technology. This helps solo, group practices and dental service organizations streamline back-office processes. The platform seamlessly integrates with CAQH®’s Provider Data to automate credentialing, provider data management and insurance application services.
