The Kramer Way Consistently recognized as one of the top nursing schools in Oklahoma and the nation, Oklahoma City University’s Kramer School of Nursing has been an accredited nursing program for more than 30 years.

With more than 30 full-time nursing faculty, KSN offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing and RNto-BSN programs, and specializes in advanced nursing degrees that include Master of Science in Nursing, post-master’s professional certificates, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and PhD in Nursing programs. KSN currently has 500 nursing students and no waiting list!

The Nursing Shortage Epidemic Currently Oklahoma is 42nd in the nation for the number of registered nurses, and 42% of Oklahoma’s nurses are age 50 and older, with one in four anticipated to retire soon. Estimates show that nursing schools today are graduating roughly 50 percent of the future need for nurses, and the nursing shortage has never been greater. OCU’s Kramer School of Nursing is growing to help meet the high demand for nurses. With 500 students poised and ready to fill the need, the only obstacle is access to hands-on clinical instruction, making them prepared for any situation. The solution is a state-of-the-art simulation center that will provide a simulated nursing environment for students to practice their skills on high-acuity patients, with no risk of harm to a living person.

Simulation: The Future of Nursing SIMULATED LEARNING Simulation is used extensively in the United States for high-tech educational purposes. The success of simulation as a teaching tool in high-risk situations is invaluable and is supported by multiple research studies.

KSN is investing in the construction of a Nursing Simulation Center featuring seven Hi-Fidelity, anatomically correct Simulation Manikins ranging from newborn to adult, that will be set up in life-like healthcare settings. These manikins will be assigned medical histories, administered critical treatments and medications, and will respond to treatment based on the care provided by students. Instructors will remain in an adjacent room hidden behind one-way mirrors, where they will control manikin responses to care, allowing students to act independently. Following the care, instructors will evaluate student performance, giving students invaluable clinical hours of practice and education.

An Investment in Life OCU has initiated an aggressive fundraising campaign to invest $2.3 million in the creation of the Simulation Center. The goal is to raise the first $1.1 million by summer 2017 to begin construction for the facility to be open by the 2017 fall semester. The remaining $1.2 million will be raised to complete the project and support ongoing needs for computers, software, high-tech equipment and maintenance.

LIFE SUPPORT FOR THE SIMULATION CENTER We are grateful to LaDonna and Herman Meinders, who have issued a Challenge Pledge of $250,000 to help launch the campaign and help achieve the dream of a Hi-Fi Simulation Center. Ongoing support is necessary to reach our overall goal.
