Pickleball is said to be the fastest growing sport in the United States and Oklahoma City is quickly getting into the swing of it, too.
The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but it can develop into a quick, fastāpaced, competiātive game for experienced players, according to usapickelball.org.
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Wash. Three dads ā Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum ā whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities ā are credāited for creating the game, the website explains.
Pickleball has evolved from original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing interānationally as well, with many European and Asian countries adding courts.
In Oklahoma City, tennis courts in city parks are being converted into pickleball
courts. Because of its easyātoāplay nature, pickleball has become a popular sport among seniors. They are flooding to the Healthy Living OKC center to play the sport.
Suzanne LaBelle, direcātor of racquet sports and fitness at The Greens Golf and Country Club, said one of the best things about pickleball is the community it creāates.
āPickleball is easy to learn and all abilāities and ages can play together,ā she said. āSeeing families play together and/or athletes who haven't been able to play other sports get active again is very rewarding.
āIt's easy to see why it's the fastest growing sport in America.ā
Pickleball can be just social, competiā
tive or both, she said.
āOne of the great things about it is that I've had players who have never played tennis together due to their levels, now play pickleball and socialize togethāer,ā LaBelle said.
Linda Dunn is an avid pickleball player and said it is very addictive.
āOne of the great things about it is you make a whole new group of friends,ā Dunn said.
āIt is a fun game for all ages.ā
The Senner family plays the game together a lot, Deborah said. Son Brevin, daughter Sterling, husband Scott and Deborah hit the courts together often.
Of Scott, Deborah said she āwould venāture to say that he is flatāout addicted to pickleball.ā
āHe would play every night of the week if he could,ā Deborah said. āItās crazy how the popularity of this sport has absolutely swept the nation, including the entire Senner household which makes for some pretty fun competition.ā

BBy shopping local, you are putting money back into the community.
Local independent shops invest more in our communities. Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial contribution to your community.
Kevyn Colburn, vice president of Morris Enterprises, Inc., which manages the Shoppes at Northpark, said the mall is all local.
āIt is super important for customers to think local not only at Christmas but year round as our tenants are the ones supporting our local churchāes, ball teams, non profit organizations, etc.,ā she said.
According to national surveys by chambers of comāmerce, small business associations and even the governāment, $68 out of every $100 spent locally stays in the communiāty, compared to only $48 if you buy from a national chain store. Areaāowned restaurants keep $74 out of every $100 in the community.
There are a number of other great reasons to shop local.
Local businesses sell great products at affordable prices. Some people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products available. Talented artisans, sharp buyers with discerning taste who know quality, restaurants where most of your food was sourced locally, are great reasons to trade with locallyāowned stores and restaurants.
Shops in our town create local employment and selfāemployment. These people in turn spend in the local economy.
Surveys indicate that $68 out of every $100 spent locally stays in the community.
Shopping locally saves you time and money. You travel less, saving on time and fuel.
Shopping locally retains our distinctiveāness. Independent businesses create disātinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet changing population needs.
Shopping locally saves the environment. Local businesses often stock a high perācentage of locally sourced goods that do not require longādistance transportation,
helping to reduce our global footprint.
Local businesses are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the elderly, young people and others who rely on pubālic transportation.
Shopping local saves services. Private and public sector services cluster around businesses. As businesses disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants and other businesses.
Local businesses value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and
service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service.
Alicia Rankin, the owner of Lillygrass Flowers and Decor, said one of the great aspects of owning a small business is getāting to know customers.
āI have been very fortunate during my time as a local business owner, so many of my customers have become friends,ā she said. āSeeing familiar faces and getting to catch up with loyal customers is what makes this job so special."
Oklahoma Cityās Roger Cude on the set of āOut of Exile,ā a thriller he executive produced.
TThe streets of Northwest Oklahoma City are filled with movie trucks and trailers thanks to the new Sylvester Stallone series, āTulsa King,ā which despite its title is primarily filmāing right here in several metro Oklahoma City area locations.
āTulsa King,ā the latest series from āYellowstoneā and ā1883ā creator Taylor Sheridan, is one of several major film and television projects that have flocked to Oklahoma City to take advantage of new film rebates, workforce development programs, and stuādio soundstages like Prairie Surf Studios.
The state of Oklahoma now offers $30 million in cash rebates, thanks to the 2021 Filmed in Oklahoma Act. This new legislaātion offers a base rebate of 20 percent to qualified film and teleā
vision productions filming in Oklahoma with additional uplifts for filming in rural municipaliāties, qualified soundstages, postāproduction, and television seaāsons.
Cities also got in on the action, with Bethany offering the state's first municipal film incentive, helping it to attract much of the filming of Tulsa King, and several other productions. Oklahoma City created an Office of Film and Creative Industries to administer a program that will provide filmāmakers rebates on qualified expenses for production and postāproduction activities.
Hotel stays, catering, car rentals, set construction, editing and photography are all costs that could be deemed as qualified expenses under the incentive program.
Workforce Development is a major focus as studios look to hire hundreds of crew members for their Oklahoma based productions. Francis Tuttle Technology Center is taking a leadership role with its Film Industry Training program, offering classes in makeāup, location scouting, art department, food styling, and production accounting. Francis Tuttle is also offering onāset traināing sessions in partnership with Prairie Surf Studios, the Film Education Institute of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City Community College, which was recently named one of the top film schools in North America by MovieMaker magazine.
Prairie Surf Studios in the former Cox Convention Center is the newest film studio in Oklahoma City. With five fully equipped soundstages that cover 1.3 million square feet, Prairie Surf is the largest studio in the southwest and a major draw for outāofātown productions.
Local entrepreneur Roger Cude is making a big splash in the film industry. The founder of GPS Executive Consulting, Waterās Edge Winery and Cude Construction is expanding his empire into film production. Cude has produced two short films: āSeeker,ā from director Victor Caballero, who is also the direcātor of operations for Oklahoma Cityās deadCenter Film Festival; and āCheese Sisters,ā from director Connie Franklin, a film on which he also helped with casting and locations.
Cudeās most exciting role to date is executive producer of the feature film āOut of Exile,ā which premieres in 2023 on Amazon Prime and the Paramount Network. āOut of Exileā is a new thriller from Choctaw director Kyle Kauwika Harris that stars Peter Greene from āPulp Fictionā and āThe Mask.ā
The film and television industry in Oklahoma is about to explode. Thanks to innovative local leaders like Roger Cude and Francis Tuttle Technology Center, Northwest Oklahoma City is ready for its closeāup.

EEnthusiasm for classic and vintage cars is rolling into northwest Oklahoma City.
With festivals and car shows connected with them, automobileālovers are revving up their engines.
The Route 66 Cruisersā car show is a part of the annual Route 66 Festival. The festival, which is in its 15th year, is tradiātionally held on the Saturday of Memorial weekend on 38th Street north to 39th Expressway, between Peniel and Asbury in Bethany.
Organizer Roy Moser said there has been a constant rise of participation over the years, from 50 cars to over 170.
Itās a lot of hard work, he said, but the folks who are always āneck deepā in the organization are Julie Moser, Robert
Breger, Mike Burgan, Clay Dowis and Marcia Doom.
The car show draws everything from Model T Roadsters to new Hell Cat Challengers and some cars a lot of folks have never heard of or even seen, Moser said.
He said his personal love of cars is his dadās āfault.ā
āIt all started with a 1954 Studebaker Champion that my dad had when I was 4āyearsāold and several vehicles after that when he did engine swaps and modificaātions. The first vehicle I had was a 1956 Ford F100.ā
The fatherāson duo pulled the old engine out of the truck and replaced it with a small block Chevy, a Muncie 4ā
speed transmission and a Dana 426 geared rear axle.
āMan, it would fly, Moser said.
Moser and his wife now own a a yellow 1956 Chevy 210 ( Josephine) and a green 1968 Cadillac Coupe DeVille (Miss Ivy).
āItās a great hobby and I always enjoy getting to watch people's face's of all ages light up when the see something from their younger days,ā he said. āIt's not about how shiny or having an awardāwināning car it's about just getting out with other likeāminded folks and having fun with your classic car.ā
An iconic pedestrian bridge has been installed over State Highway 3 to link the existing Hefner and Overholser Trails and provide safer passage across NW Expressway.
The $5.3 million project is funded by the 2007 Bond Program and the 2017 Better Streets Safer City Bond Program and installs a 121āfoot bridge east of Wilshire Blvd.
The design concept represents both classic cars from the 40s, 50s and 60s and nearby airports, Wiley Post and Clarence E Page, and their aviation heritage.
Construction details include: water line relocation, excavation, reinforced steel, a preāfabricated bridge, superstructure, stair placeāment, ramps and guardrails, ADA curb ramps, lighting, signing, striping, sidewalks and driveway replacement.
Hefner-Overholser Trail: Runs from Britton Road at Lake Hefner Drive to NW 39th Street at Overholser Drive.
Trail length: 7.8 miles
Most trail is dedicated trail space, with approximately two miles of on-street biking trail. Trail edges along west side of Wiley Post airport.
Parking: Lake Hefner and surrounding amenities, Overholser Park
Connects to: Bert Cooper Trails, Overholser Trail, West River Trail (via Overholser Trail).
SSince 2009 the Chamber has held "Taste of Northwest" each fall as a showācase highlighting a mix of restaurants in the Northwest Metro.
The 2022 event featured an array of eateries offering a wide variety of cuisines from around the world including Jinya Ramen Bar, Caribbean Fusion, Wagyu Japanese BBQ, Pepperoni Grill, and Abel's Mexican Restaurant.
The event also provides a place for established favorites like Running Wild Catering, Clark Crew BBQ, Flower Child, District 21 and Firebirds to show off their skills and new discoveries like Mentalitea & Coffee, Chicken Foot, Whipped Bakery Cafe, DRTC, and Not Cho Cheesecake to garner attention.
Staffing shortages in the restaurant industry threatened participation in the event, so a partnership with the Francis Tuttle Culinary Program provided restaurant partners some helping hands while it gave those students realāworld experience and employment connections with the restaurants they worked with.
āWithout the help of Francis Tuttle's
students, this year's event would not have been possible. We were excited to see the enthusiāasm on both sides of this equation," said Brian Hancock, 2022 Chamber and Taste of Northāwest chairman.
Besides being a restaurant showācase and a fundraiser for the chamber, this year's Taste restaurants also represented all areas of NWOKC, including Bethany, Warr Acres, Nichols Hills, Western Avenue, the Memorial Corridor, Northwest Expressway Chisholm Creek and May Avenue. More than half of the restaurants opened after January 2020. The NWOKC food scene is poised to continue expansion in 2023 with nationāal brands bringing locations of Chuy's,
Velvet Taco, Riserva, and Ramsey's Kitchen. In the Britton District, El Coyote Bar & Cantina and Woodworks Distilling Company recently opened.
Local dining is also gaining national attention with longātime favorite Florence's Restaurant earning James Beard recognition and Ma Der Lao receiving accolades from Bon Appetit Magazine and the New York Times 50 Best Restaurants List.
Breweries are tapping into the local econāomy all over the Oklahoma City area.
There are 19 breweries along the OKC Ale Trail as posted on the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitorās Bureauās visitokc.com.
āDescribing the craft beer scene in Oklahoma City as āboomingā would be downāplaying its success,ā the website states.
Craft brewing has also really become a community in Oklahoma City.
Charn Langford, the owner of Broke Brewery in Oklahoma City, said he got into the craft brewery busiāness to offer ātraditional craft beer, with a cozy neighborāhood pub experience.ā
Broke Brewing opened in February 2020, just before the pandemic hit. Langford stuck with it and now has an established enterprise.
He said the craft brewing community is āhealthy and active.ā
āItās much more cooperative then any other industry Iāve been a part of,ā Langford said. āWe help each other out with materials or supplies when they're needed.
āWe work with each other on collaborative brews and festivals. We support each otherās taprooms and events as much as we can.ā
The breweries also serve the community by brewing āspecial batchā beers for the benefit of local charities. Stonecloud Brewery, in collaboration with OKC Mayor David Holt, recently brewed an IPA, Holt My Beer, with the mayorās likeness on the can, with profits going to Patrons of the OKC Animal Shelter.
DDespite rising interest rates in the last part of 2022, the housing market in Oklahoma City remained strong and highly affordable compared to most housing markets in the U.S.
Oklahoma City is now the 20th largest metro in the United States. Experts said out of all large cities across the country, OKC felt the smallest drop in home sales in 2022.
According to Zillow, home values were up 7.9 percent in Oklahoma City during 2022.
Redfin estimated the average sale price for a home in late 2022 was $259,800, up 7.6 percent since 2022. The average price per square foot came in at $149, up 12 percent since last year.
OKC homes sell for about 1 percent below list prices and go pendāing in an average of 18 days.
Many homeowners also received multiple offers, Redfin said. Some of those offers came with waived contingencies.
Realtor.com predicts that home sales are to increase by 4. 2 perācent in 2023 and expects a 2.6 increase in prices.
Interest rates are expected to continue to rise as high as 7.4 perācent in early 2023, falling to 7.1 percent by yearās end.
Oklahoma City prospective home buyers can look for less compeātition for more home on the market, according to realtor.com.
