Switching it up: Local businesses excel in hard times

While the pandemic threatened to wreak havoc on small businesses, own‐ ers got creative and back to work.

“My sister ... and I had been talking about opening up an event center and with the shut down we had time to work on it,” Hubble said. “It has been one of my favorite proj‐ ects.”

Having a fun place for people to come to gather and celebrate here in Bethany is their goal at 36 Square Event Center.

The idea of MentaliTea and Coffee was actually developed when the world shut down due to COVID, owner Avery Buck said.

“The suicide and anxiety/depression rates were going up due to the cir‐ cumstances and I saw a need in that,” Buck said. “I wanted to create an envi‐ ronment that is a safe place and a spot of tranquility for others.

“As unfortunate as Covid was/still is, I feel like it made great strides in mental health awareness for our nation. I’m hoping to contin‐ ue to have those uncomfortable conversations in my shop and make them as easy as getting a cup of coffee.”

When Buck opened MentaliTea, the Delta variant was deeply impacting Oklahoma.

“All we have known is business during a try‐ ing time,” she said. “However, we have been overwhelmed with the love and support of Bethany.

“The helpfulness and the eagerness to see us succeed has been a great encouragement to our business. Any trial we have faced has been worth it to have so many positive comments and returning smiling faces.”

Hubble said she believes the more small businesses can feed off each other, the better.

“There is power in numbers!”

While not able to control a lot during those times, Hubble said she learned to give herself a lot of grace. If something doesn’t work, don’t take it personally and just try the next thing.

“Also, stay clear of the negative,” she said.

“Surround yourself with like‐minded people.

Breathe and find a little joy in every day.”

FARMERS MARKETS

A bushel and a peck, plus much more, available at local farmers markets Built in 1928, the Oklahoma City Farmers Public Market was constructed on the site of the Delmar Gardens Amusement Park. The 40,000‐square‐foot structure was a centralized local food hub for Oklahoma farmers, ranchers and grocers. Since then it has become one of Oklahoma City’s premier event centers, playing host to concerts, antique trade shows, weddings, sporting events and more.

••• The OSU‑OKC Farmers Market at Scissortail Park strives to support local food producers and artisans by increasing food accessibility. Scissortail Park, in cooperation with OSU‐OKC established the “made and grown in Oklahoma” producer‐only market‐ place in 2020 to create a destination for locals and tourists alike. The partnership allows OSU‐OKC and Scissortail Park to provide downtown Oklahoma City with fresh, Made In Oklahoma produce and goods while supporting local farmers, producers and artisans.

In addition to offering some of the best Oklahoma made and grown produce and products, the market also features performers, food demonstrations, food trucks and seasonal activities. The OSU‐OKC Farmers Market is open on Saturdays, April‐October at the northeast corner of Scissortail Park, adjacent to the performance stage. The Farmers Market will reopen on Saturday, April 2, 2022.

Grower brings farm-fresh products to Bethany Rooney Farms is bringing a farmers market to Bethany.

The El Reno operation bought a little house at the corner of NW 38th & College in Bethany with plans to start a unique grocery and farm stand business there, Brian Rooney said “Our goal is to build a retail year‐round farm stand that would offer locally pro‐ duced food items, feature our own farm’s products and fresh produce from other local and regional producers. The key attribute being flavor and freshness,” he said. “We really want to develop a brand around fresh produce the way it should taste, the way many of us remember it from when we were kids, products with a history and a story around the farm, or the region it comes from.

“We feel there is a market for this and having it centered in our hometown is

such an exciting opportuni‐ ty.”

Farmers markets help build community, he said.

“People come together through sharing great food and what a fun way to build up a community and drive more people to our commercial district than sharing our passion for great fresh produce and food,” Rooney said.

Rooney Farms operated the farm stand a few weekends last year as a way of getting the word out and finding out what people wanted. “(2020) was very much a small‐scale version of what we hope to have, but we are overjoyed with the welcoming and the reception we received from the community,” Rooney said.

Plans are to offer products from other producers in the retail store

and have events where they can be present and tell the story about their products.

“There are even some discus‐ sions happening about development of new products and getting involved in the entrepreneurial side of things with other visionaries hoping to start their own food or agricultural enter‐ prise,” he said.

Rooney Farms offers everything from bedding plants, perennial and vegetable starts in the spring to summer fresh produce, including heirloom cherry tomatoes, slic‐ ing tomatoes, onions, peppers, squash, melons and okra, all grown on their farm.

Other producers bring in regional favorites such as vidalia onions, Georgia peaches, Rocky Ford can‐ taloupe and Rush Springs water‐ melon.
