On the cover: The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital’s new Patient Bed Tower is 100,000 square feet. The four-story addition includes two patient floors with room for 40 new patients, a new outpatient clinic that will greatly expand the Hospital’s capacity to provide medical care and rehabilitation on an outpatient basis, a centralized patient services area for tests and procedures needed by both inpatients and outpatients, and an education center where the Hospital can provide the most current training for staff, as well as pediatric professionals and students throughout Oklahoma.

There’s a new generation of leadership in Northwest Oklahoma City From education to government, new leaders are bringing innovative ideas to the table.

Shane Pate, Nichols Hills City Manager Shane Pate became Nichols Hills City manager in early 2017. He holds a bachelors degree in psychology from Oklahoma State University, a juris doctorate from Oklahoma City University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Central Oklahoma.

"I love working with the people here," he said. "I liked how the city would set goals and just pursue them.

They had like this mission to move forward. I had this passion for what they were doing."

KP Westmoreland, Bethany Mayor KP Westmoreland is a 1986 graduate of Bethany schools and a 1992 graduate of Southern Nazarene University. He is the president and founder of Westmoreland Ministries and is a motivational and faith-based speaker and published author.

“I decided to run for mayor because I saw a need for renewed passion and leadership for our city's future,” he said.

His No. 1 goal as mayor is “to bring back the connection of community within our city and encourage our citizens to be the family of Bethany.”

Dr. J. Keith Newman President, SNU Dr. J. Keith Newman was elected as the 15th president in the 118-year history of Southern Nazarene University.

His tenure as president began Aug. 1.

With 17 years of pastoral ministry in the Church of the Nazarene and 15 years of service as a senior administrator in Christian higher education, Dr. Newman counts it a great privilege to join a Christ-centered community preparing God-called, purpose-driven, passionate servant leaders who make the world better.

Drew Eichelberger Superintendent, Bethany Public Schools Drew Eichelberger has been in the field of education for 21 years. He served as executive director of elementary education for the Putnam City Public Schools.

Prior to that, he was an elementary and high school principal. He has been accepted into a doctoral program and is looking forward to the challenges of furthering his education.

“I believe in servant leadership,” he said. “One of my goals is to maintain the upward momentum already established by an outstanding teaching and administrative staff.”

“I encourage parents and community members to be active participants in the education of our students.”

The STEM movement is building in schools across the nation and our local school are no exception.

STEM learning is the intentional collaboration of the science, technology, engineering and math subjects, typically combining at least two of these components into a single, cohesive unit complete with real-world application.

In Bethany: Bethany Public Schools launched an exciting STEM initiative for the 2017-2018 school year, coordinator Andrea Stewart said. A new STEM building, funded through a bond issue approved by patrons, opened. Stocked with 3D printers, whiteboard tables for project planning, and 75-inch multi-point touch screens, the STEM building beckons students to become a part of the STEM excitement.

are also busy integrating technology and engineering into the science and math curriculum throughout the K-12 campus.

“As many as 300 students will have built and programed a robot by the end of this school year,” Stewart said.

Children as young as first and second grade will begin drag-and-drop coding, she said.

“Bethany’s hope is to involve the community in this endeavor, to open students’ eyes to the possibilities and purpose of gaining the skill set that comes from a STEM education.”

In Putnam City: Putnam City has about 1,800 elementary students taking part in an active STEM curriculum and STEM instructional program that is growing and developing in just under half of the elementary schools, district Director of Communications Steve Lindley said.

Students in these schools typically attend a STEM class once a week and engage in numerous hands-on, minds-on activities.

“One of the features of the STEM program is an exploration in robotic engineering and coding through Botball competition,” Lindley said.

“Botball is an international STEM competition that requires teams to use robots to propose solutions to problems and write programming code to incorporate those solutions.”

The district is also very active in the Science Olympiad movement.

Lindley Science Olympiad is the nation’s most exciting K-12 STEM competition comprising nearly

8,000 teams nationwide in events which test student knowledge and skill in the life, earth, physical and geological sciences, as well as engineering, technology and mathematics.

High school and middle school teams compete annually throughout the year for the right to represent their state in the National Science Olympiad Tournament held each May. “All of Putnam City’s high schools, middle schools and elementary schools field teams and compete in the Science Olympiad,” Lindley said.

A third major STEM program in Putnam City are the robotics and engineering programs offered through CareerTech classes at Putnam City middle schools and high schools. The programs follow Engineering by Design curriculum that allows students to explore robotics and advanced automation design to engineer robots capable of competing in contest such as VexRobotics, BEST Robotics and BotBall.

Wellness Center is THE place to be

Want to play pickle ball, try whittling wood or line dancing? Maybe, it’s swimming, working out or the ukulele you are interested in.

Even if you’d like to learn about the history of horse racing or preparing healthy meals — and, you are 50 or “beyond” — the MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Center at 11501 N Rockwell is calling your name.

And while the center’s members come to fuel a variety of interests, Membership Services Director Amber Clour said that most times what they will definitely discover at the center is a great sense of community.

An entire wing of the wellness center is dedicated to specialized fitness areas. The center boasts a 75-foot hybrid salt-water aquatic center, a regulation size gymnasium, a fully equipped fitness center with cardiovascular equipment, selectorized weight machines, freeweights and many other types of fitness equipment and an aerobics studio, as well as secondary social interaction areas.

The wellness center has gathered skilled personal trainers and group instructors from all over Oklahoma. They hold various levels of health and fitness degrees, are certified in their areas of expertise and have years of experience teaching their craft.

Another wing of the wellness center contains numerous multipurpose meeting rooms of various sizes, private consultation rooms, a demonstration kitchen and an arts and crafts studio. Care was taken to place windows in locations that would provide daylight, while limiting glare and heat.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center is closed on Sundays.

Women are taking care of business Statistics indicate that the rate of women opening businesses is on the upswing — and that trend holds true for Northwest Oklahoma City, too.

According to the National Women’s Business Council, women-owned businesses now comprise nearly 36 percent of the country's businesses, generating over $1.4 trillion in receipts.

From catering to accounting, law and technology, Oklahoma women are rising to the challenge of operating a small business — and are enjoying success.

“A couple of things we have that are different is that we provide food to a small specialty hospital here in OKC, we manage a small employee only cafe and we have annual contracts.”

Riversport fun comes to Lake Hefner Riversport Adventures OKC now offers kayak and stand up paddle board rentals at Lake Hefner, as well as sailing lessons and camps.
