Village plaza is nearing completion By Eric Oesch Staff Writer The largest single capital improvement project in the 73-year history of The Village could be completed as early as January 2024 says Village City Manager Dave Slezickey. He estimates the project is nearly 80 percent complete with most of the “big” work finished. The massive $8 million project is under construction near the busy intersection of Hefner Road and

Pennsylvania, close to the Love’s Corporate Campus, Village Library, City Hall and the Hawthorn Village neighborhood. The Civic Plaza project is the result of a massive Tax Increment District (Tiff District No. 1) created by the council in 2006 to redevelop the area. It includes a Civic Plaza, next door to The Village City Hall at 2304 Manchester Drive, a linear park stretching to the south and east from the Civic Plaza to See VILLAGE, Page 14

For months the Nichols Hills City Council has grappled with the issue of underage children driving golf carts recklessly on city streets. Following action taken by the council, drivers of golf carts must have a valid motor vehicle driver’s license from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety before they can drive on city streets. During its October meeting, the City Council adopted sweeping changes to city ordinances pertaining to golf carts, or “low-speed electrical vehicles,” in efforts to curb careless driving by kids as young as 12 within the city. The greatest change to the ordinance is the valid motor vehicle driver’s license requirement, meaning youngsters under age 16 are no longer allowed to operate a golf cart on city streets. Section 44-109 of the Nichols Hills City Code was updated to define a low-speed electrical vehicle as one with a top speed of greater than 20 mph but not greater than 25 mph and is manufactured in compliance with the National See NHILLS, Page 7

Community, civic leaders embark on a transformative journey to Galápagos Thirteen influential community and civic leaders recently embarked on a remarkable eight-day expedition to the breathtaking Galápagos Islands, led by Dr. Dwight Lawson and Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino. “This unforgettable voyage allowed participants to immerse themselves in the

unique and awe-inspiring natural wonders of the Galápagos archipelago,” organizers said. Highlights of the trip included sailing on a luxurious yacht, exploring various islands, and engaging in extraordinary activities such as swimming alongside sea turtles, sharks, and

playful sea lions. Participants also had the opportunity to conquer the challenging hikes to the summits of volcanic peaks, granting them panoramic vistas of the pristine landscapes that have inspired generations of conservationists. The expedition served as

a profound educational experience, fostering a deep appreciation for the Galápagos Islands' biodiversity and the urgent need for their preservation. “This transformative journey allowed these community and civic leaders to connect with nature in an unparalleled way and gain

a renewed commitment to championing conservation efforts in their respective communities,” the organizers said. “The impact of this experience is expected to ripple outward, inspiring positive change and a heightened awareness of environmental conservation on a broader scale.”

McGuinness volleyball players dog pile each other after the final point of their championship match against Tulsa-Booker T. Washington.

Irish take down Tulsa Washington for 5A title By Jason Jewell Sports Editor Capping an historic season, the McGuinness volleyball team pulled off a 3-1 victory over Tulsa-Booker T. Washington last Saturday at the Tulsa Union Multipurpose Activity Center to claim the second Class 5A state championship in school history. “It was awesome,” said coach Kelli Miller. “I love these girls, our sport and our school. It was great to be able to bring them another state title.” The weekend also represented a “full-circle” moment for Miller and her assistant coach Megan Janda who played on the Irish’s first volleyball state championship team in 2003. With her team ranked No. 1 for the entire season, Miller said she knew pretty early that the Irish

could win a state crown. “We have a special group of seniors who really bought in to what we’re doing,” Miller said. “They really set the tone for us.” Three seniors contributed significant playing time as part of the 9-person rotation, including setter Claire Kierl, libero Taylor Vann and right-side hitter Ella Christensen. Others in the rotation are juniors Greer DeLeon, Olivia Metz and Hailey Jayne Johnson, along with sophomore Charlotte Nelson and freshmen Arielle Yapi and Kinsey Smith. Kierl, Nelson and Yappi also earned spots on the All-Tournament team at state. The Irish, which finished with a 31-4 record, rolled to a 3-1 win against Victory Christian on Friday in the semifinals and a 3-0 sweep of Sapulpa in the quarterfinals on

Thursday afternoon. ED. MEMORIAL TOPS ANTLERS Top-seeded Deer Creek saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 4 Edmond Memorial in the 6A semifinals last Friday afternoon at Tulsa Union Multipurpose Activity Center. The Antlers (30-5) opened with a 3-0 victory against No. 8 Edmond North on Thursday. Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary was denied a third straight state title and first in 6A after suffering a 3-0 loss to sixth-seed Tulsa-Bishop Kelley in the quarterfinals. Livia Ward posted a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs for the No. 3 Rockets (373). MacKenzi Bass finished with 18 digs and three aces, while Georgia Ahlert had 10 kills and three aces.

The Exorcist Returns!

F

ew images on film are as horrifying or as embedded into popular culture as those from 1973 classic film, The Exorcist. The spinning head, the projectile vomit, the little girl flying up to the ceiling. Now, 50 years later, another sequel has come along. The Exorcist: Believer creeped into theaters in early October, just before Taylor Swift crashed the monster mash with her epic premiere. Now that things are back to normal, this devilish sequel to the Oscar-winning original has jumped past the $100 million mark, reaching $108 million in its first 17 days. The release has been expanded to include both theaters and streaming on Amazon Prime in time for Halloween. The Exorcist: Believer is co-written and directed by David Gordon Green, a filmmaker from Little Rock, Arkansas, who has forged an awesome, eclectic career since winning the 2004 Special Jury Prize at Sundance for All the Real Girls. He writes intense dramas like George Washington, Undertow, and Goat. He directs wild comedies like Pineapple Express and the television series East Bound & Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones. And he recently relaunched the most

famous horror franchise of all, writing and directing Halloween in 2018, Halloween Kills in 2021, and Halloween Ends 2022. The Exorcist: Believer stars Leslie Odom, Jr. as a father seeking answers when his daughter and her friend go missing and return three days later, seemingly possessed by the devil. Unsure of what to do, he reaches out to the mother from the original film, still played by Ellen Burstyn, to solicit her help in having the girls exorcised. Leslie Odom, Jr. is an Oscar nominated songwriter and actor, receiving nods in 2021 for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actor for playing Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami… Odom is also a theater actor who won the Tony in 2016 for Best Lead Actor for originating the role of Aaron Burr in the musical Hamilton. He has starred in major movies like Glass Onion and Murder on the Orient Express as well as television shows like the musical series Smash and the animated series Central Park. Burstyn won the Oscar in 1975 for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and was nominated four other times, including for The Exorcist. She also won a Golden Globe for Same Time, Next Year and two Primetime Emmy Awards for Political Animals and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Linda Blair was Oscar nominated and won the Golden Globe for playing the possessed daughter Regan in The Exorcist. Blair’s career has been less illustrious, but she has embraced her place in pop culture and joined in on sequels, spoofs, and other horror films. The original 1973 film, The Exorcist, was written and produced by William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original novel in 1971. He personally hired William Friedkin to direct. Friedkin had recently won the Best Director Oscar for The French Connection, which also won Best Picture and Best Actor for Gene Hackman. The Exorcist was the first horror film to be nominated for and win an Oscar. It was nominated for ten awards and won two: Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay for William Peter Blatty. Cookie & Scotty’s Thanksgiving: Spreading love, one meal at a time For over two decades, Cookie and Scotty’s Thanksgiving event has been a beacon of hope and kindness during the holiday season in Oklahoma. Since its inception in 1999, this heartwarming tradition from Other Options has touched the lives of countless individuals living with HIV and AIDS by providing them with complete Thanksgiving meals. The event’s continued success is a testament to the power of community, compassion and the indomitable spirit of giving. Cookie and Scotty’s Thanksgiving is a collaborative effort, uniting the hearts and hands of hundreds of volunteers who selflessly come together

to prepare and deliver these special meals. With every $8 donated, the event ensures that a complete, delicious Thanksgiving meal is made available to someone in need. In essence, this initiative embodies the very essence of Thanksgiving - a time to share and express gratitude. As the event draws near, there are several ways for people to get involved and make a difference: 1. Donate Turkeys 2. Make a Financial Donation: Even small donations can go a long way in making a significant impact. 3. Volunteer: The event relies on volunteers to prepare, assemble and deliver these meals to those in

need. The power of human connection is truly felt when individuals come together to serve a common cause. In a new and exciting development, this year’s event will be hosted at aVenue - Event Space by Rococo Catering, generously provided by owner and chef, Bruce Rinehart. This gesture of kindness and hospitality underscores the community spirit that the event has come to represent over the years. Cookie & Scotty’s Thanksgiving not only feeds the body but nourishes the soul. It serves as a shining example of what humanity can achieve when people come together

with love and compassion as their guiding principles. This Thanksgiving, consider being a part of this remarkable tradition. Whether through donating turkeys, making a financial contribution, or volunteering your time, you have the opportunity to create a lasting impact in the lives of Oklahomans living with HIV and AIDS. Let’s make this holiday season a time for gratitude, sharing and unity, as we continue to spread the love through Cookie & Scotty’s Thanksgiving. During the meeting, Nichols Hills Mayor Sody Clements expressed her concerns that parents of children operating golf carts aren’t getting the message. “I’m a little bit frustrated that we have been talking about this in FRIDAY Newspaper, but we still haven’t attracted the attention of anybody that actually owns one (golf cart),” Clements told her fellow council members. “I worry that they’re not going to know the

(new) rules, but of course as soon as they get stopped, they will find them out. “I was hopeful that we could hear all of this (new ordinance) without having to pass this extensive ordinance,” she said, “but I think we have to do it ahead of a tragedy, which I think one is just around the corner, so to speak.” The ordinance update, which takes effect immediately, says “Low-Speed Electrical Vehicles may not be operated on Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilshire Boulevard, Western Avenue or NW 63; however, persons residing on Pennsylvania Avenue or Wilshire Boulevard may drive on such streets when taking the most direct route to access other of the city’s streets where operation of lowspeed electrical vehicles is permitted.” The Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, a popular destination for golf cards, is located at 7000 NW Grand Blvd., one block south of the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.

To operate on city streets the vehicles must now include headlamps, front and rear turn signal lamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, reflex reflectors, exterior mirrors, parking brakes, windshield, VIN and a seat belt system. Insurance, including the current Oklahoma Owners Security Verification Form, must be carried in the vehicle at all times while in operation, and must be produced for inspection on request by any police officer. Owners must comply with the applicable provisions of the Oklahoma Compulsory Insurance Law. Hours of operation of the lowspeed electrical vehicles are now restricted as they may not be operated on city streets during the onehalf hour after sunset or the onehalf hour before sunrise or at any other time when there is not sufficient light or visibility to clearly discern persons on a street at a distance of at least 500 feet. City Manager Shane Pate told the council that Nichols Hills police will “transition people into this new code.”

Heritage Hall embraces traditions

I

n the past week, Heritage Hall has embraced many school traditions, as well as cultural traditions. To close out our celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Upper School hosted a fascinating festival for students that began with a collection of beautiful dances and music. Stunning dresses, talented dancers and the exciting energy that filled the room were the perfect way to conclude National Hispanic Heritage Month. Following the dancers’ final performance, Upper School chorus teacher David Hillis led the choir in singing a Spanish melody. Lastly, Spanish teachers Narcisa Zehr, Laura Renard and Cecilia Marquez’s classes prepared traditional Hispanic dishes to share

with students, teachers, and dancers after the choir performance. All in all, the National Hispanic Heritage Festival was a major success!

wyn was exposed to a range of international experiences and influences, specifically via sports, early in his life. These experiences helped to shape a vision of community and service to vulnerable societies. His interest in bringing increased awareness to the effects of the economic, social, cultural and political changes around the world on vulnerable communities sharpened with his involvement in athletics at the national level in high school in Jamaica. As an young athlete he represented his home country at various international sporting events, Aldwyn learned the value and importance of cultivating a shared vision of service and community via sports diplomacy. His interactions were not limited to sports, but quickly made the connections with the sporting platforms that also highlighted the different levels of trade interaction and economic unions in the Caribbean region and the world, including CARICOM, CAC, Pan American and World Junior Championships. Aldwyn currently serves as deputy director of the research and economic analysis Division at Oklahoma Department of Commerce. He primarily provides actionable business intelligence to key decision makers ranging from local business/community leaders to the Governor. He supports the structures and strategies of international delegations at events such as the Paris and Farnborough Airshows. He also helps to guide the strategy and connections with International Delegations that are considering expanding in the US and convince them to choose Oklahoma as a base of operations. Boeing, Kratos Defense, Lufthansa, GE, Raytheon, CMC, Sofidel, and American Airlines are a few of the companies that have made the decision to expand to Oklahoma.

Dear Wise Elder: Both my parents' declining health necessitated their move to our home. We love them and were prepared to care for them. I’m a nurse and thought I knew what was needed. But what we didn’t expect was how time intensive it was. My wife and I have been empty nesters, still work and had gotten accustomed to going out to eat if neither of us wanted to cook in the evening. Now, all that has changed. Where can I find help? VILLAGE From Page 1 Pennsylvania Avenue, extensive landscaping and the reduction of Vineyard Boulevard from four lanes to three. Approved plans for the Civic Plaza feature a fountain with plaza floor landscape lighting. The area is to have the capability to be converted into a gathering space for markets or performances. It features two covered shelters for shade and a public restroom. The Linear Park converts the large existing right of way of Vineyard Boulevard into a landscaped park providing a safe pedestrian connector between City Hall and The Village Library, 10307 N. Pennsylvania. A senior fitness center and play area, The Village Green (library) and the reconfiguration of the street signals at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Vineyard Boulevard are included. City officials anticipate the project will give The Village a new identity and provide a new gathering venue for northwest Oklahoma City. “Calling this project transformative doesn’t do it the justice it deserves,” Councilman Sonny Wilkinson said at the start of the project last year. “This whole area of the city is going to look different in five years. Combine this project when it’s fully finished with what the YMCA is considering and what Loves continues to do as they expand their campus – for a city of our size, I think that’s absolutely remarkable and something we should be proud of.” LAUD Studio was selected as the design firm of the transformative project in September 2022 and Wynn Construction is general contractor. “After eight months of people asking, ‘what is going on next door, it’s really nice to see what is coming together,” said Slezickey of the project. “We’ve had no problems and both LAUD and Wynn Construction are solution focused to make it work. We have had great communication and cooperation with both. “For the most part we are staying within budget parameters,” said Slezickey. “There will be some overage, as with any project, changes are needed once it goes from a 2-D drawing concept to actual construction.” Slezickey said all the projects are interrelat-

ed and tied together with plumbing, electric and landscaping tentatively when completed in January. He said the hardest aspect of the project was “probably the very patient residents (in the Hawthorn Neighborhood) who were impacted with traffic and access to their homes, but I think they are appreciative of how it is all shaping up and the temporary pains of progress are past them.” Slezickey said the intersection of Manchester Drive and Vineyard Boulevard was an example of 2-D to real life, as the intersection had to be reconstructed after it was determined large vehicles would have difficulty negotiating the narrow intersection. “The objective of the design was to slow vehicular traffic down to improve pedestrian safety,” he said. “It was designed a little too well and ended up being a lot tighter than it looked on paper. “The intersection was reconstructed and now provides safe access for the limited delivery and trash trucks in the area,” he added. “It is still a little tighter than most intersections but will be beneficial when we have community events with lots of people.” Slezickey said many events are suited for the Civic Plaza, “really anything that adds value to the community. We could have some events lined up for this spring with construction being completed this winter.” “The Civic Plaza will be a good place for concerts, festivals and anything that offers increased opportunity of quality of life and recreation in the community,” he said. “I really think this will be a gem venue for northwest Oklahoma City. “I think our role will be more of coordinating events and working with community groups for events and activities,” said Slezickey about the scheduling of events at the Civic Plaza. “We’re looking at creating a position for a community engagement coordinator to facilitate events through the community, marketing, communications and social media. “I’ve been hearing positive feedback,” Slezickey said of the construction project. “When we brought LAUD onboard, they did a great job of bringing community members together for input, feedback, and planning. “We’ve always had community members with an interest in the project,” he added. “As it is shaping up, and the final result is becoming more visual, I think a lot of people are feeling good about it.”
