Water’s safe to drink but algae is swimming around in Lake Hefner By Elyssa Gerstel Student Intern While swimming is not permitted in Oklahoma City-owned lakes, residents should be aware that, due to recent storms, toxic blue-green algae have been found in Lake Hefner. People enjoying the lake’s activities such as boating or fishing, should take extra precautions and avoid areas that have visible algae, Malarie Gotcher, an Oklahoma City water conservation specialist, said. Those who decide to fish, it is essential that they thoroughly clean the fish and discard the entrails. “The recent rainfall and nutrient runoff spurred blue-green algae growth in Lake Hefner,” Gotcher said. “These types of algae blooms can produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals. We’re spot-treating the areas to knock the algae back and will continue monitoring the lake.”
Blue-green algae are organisms that are naturally found in bodies of water, she said. During warmer weather, algae can become more plentiful and dangerous. Notably, Lake Hefner is one of Oklahoma City’s drinking water reservoirs. The water remains safe to drink because the treatment process brings in water from below algae, she said. Additionally, any algae that get into the water is removed by the treatment process, as are other toxins. “It’s important to note that our drinking water is safe to drink,” said Gotcher. “We bring raw water into the treatment plant from well below the surface where the algae are on the lake, and our treatment plant also removes any potential contaminants before being delivered.” For more information on drinking water, you can visit okc.gov/water.
