The District of West Kelowna (formerly known as Westbank) was incorporated in 2007 and is comprised of the communities of Westbank, Glenrosa, Shannon Lake and Smith Creek which comprise approximately half the total population. Other communities are: Casa Loma, West Kelowna Estates, Rose Valley & Lakeview Heights. Though smaller than its neighboring City of Kelowna across the bridge, West Kelowna is home to 8 wineries, 2 executive 18 hole golf courses, a championship natural grass putting course as well as numerous beaches, scenic parks and hiking trails. An enviable climate and four season recreation attract tourists to the area to experience the beauty of this lakeside community. Numerous former waterfront RV and camping facilities have been transformed into world class vacation resort destinations with more in planning stages. The area’s lakeside setting and rural landscape continues to attract new families and retirees looking for opportunities to make West Kelowna their home. Experience downhill, cross country and snow-
shoeing winter fun within a 20 minute driving distance from Westbank. Crystal Mountain Ski Resort offers 22 runs with plans to expand and become an all season resort including a new lodge, 18 hole golf course and boutique hotel. The Telemark Cross Country Ski Club offers 16 cross country trails & 40 km of snowshoe trails. The Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre is the main recreational facility and includes a 25m swimming pool and skateboard park. The Mount Boucherie Community Centre recently completed construction of Royal LePage Place, the new home to the BCHL team “Westside Warriors”. This facility provides maximum capacity of 1520 plus standing room and a new venue for concerts, tradeshows and community events. The completion of a new five lane William R. Bennett bridge on Canada Day, 2008 is projected to accommodate an average of 69,000 vehicles per day by 2017, an increased capacity of 23,000. Bridge replacement has increased economic activity in the area attracting a massive new retail component.

In 1872, Susan Allison became the first white woman to settle on the westside of Okanagan Lake. Susan named the area “Sunnyside”. The name was abandoned when the Allisons lost 1000 head of cattle in the winter of 1880-81 and left the area. Their home, “The Allison House” may still be seen at Quail’s Gate Winery today where it was used as a wine tasting facility until 2007.

A walk to Hardy Falls (at the south end of town) is a must on your visit and an easy hike for all ages. It is especially spectacular in September when hundreds of Kokanee salmon swim upstream to spawn. Stay awhile...Play awhile... The area known as Peachland was first settled by the Lambly brothers who owned much of the land. In 1898, J.M.Robinson, a Manitoba developer established a townsite and named it Peachland because of the delicious fruit grown. The history of Peachland is depicted in the Peachland Museum, the community’s former Baptist Church.
It is an unusual eight sided wooden structure constructed in 1910. Today this quaint community of 5000 continues to attract new residents and vacationers to its shore. Davis Cove is the community’s only lakeside luxury resort with 15 cottages, waterslide, putting green and private marina. KALAMOIR PARK Page 51/C6 Parking lot is located at the bottom of Collens Hill Rd. A beautiful 27.6 hectares with grassland trails and views of Okanagan Lake. Stroll through wooded areas of Black Cottonwood down to the beachfront and take a swim. Currently the park has a specified dog beach area. BEAR CREEK PROVINCIAL PARK Page 52/E1 If you’re in the mood for something a bit more strenuous, a series of trails rimming Bear Creek Canyon offer both long & short hikes. POWERS CREEK Page 48/C1 Powers Creek trails include winding walkways featuring exquisite views of canyon walls with sheer cliffs plunging down as far as 24 meters. Best suited for mountain bikers.

When coming over the ridge on your way down to the Reservoir there are several lookout points with captivating views of the Reservoir & the local mountain ranges. McDOUGALL RIM TRAIL Page 52/E2 The uphill hike to the McDougall Creek canyon back country is open and unprotected and definitely one of our more challenging hikes. The trail takes you to the rocky Westside cliffs visible from downtown Kelowna and leads to a spectacular, panoramic view outlooking the Lakeview Irrigation District’s Reservoir and Okanagan Lake. Two Eagles Masters Golf Course combines the championship qualities of a classic Les Furber Design with the playability of a mid-length facility. The 528 yard par 5 eleventh hole offers a challenge and the 18th hole provides a commanding view of Okanagan Lake. Shannon Lake Golf Course is a full length 18 hole championship facility set amongst towering pines with scenic mountain views at varying elevation levels. A sheet of ice up to 7,000 ft in elevation covered the Okanagan Valley for many years. The weight and abrasion of the ice molded the hills and the melting water formed the lakes. About 8,000 yrs ago the ice retreated leaving the Valley suitable for human occupation. Okanagan Lake occupies 127.22 miles.

The first ferry started in 1885 and was a 10 ft scow manually operated by the McDougall Bros. in 1905. There were enough people in Westbank for the government to promise a subsidy for a better ferry service in 1905. By 1958 there were 3 ferries giving 24hr service, but in the same year the Okanagan Lake bridge opened and the ferry service discontinued.

There are two Access Points to the Myra Canyon: Myra Station and Ruth Station. The Myra Station is accessed from McCulloch Rd through to the Myra Forest Service Rd, and the Ruth Station is accessed from June Springs Rd through to the Little White Forest Rd.

Myra Station is mot popular for pedestrians. Follow KLO Rd to McCulloch Rd and follow the signs to Gallagher’s Canyon Golf. Continue past the Golf Course, cross a narrow bridge across KLO Creek and keep going until you see a high voltage power line crossing the road. The next exit to the right is Myra Forest Service Rd. Travel 8 km on a gravel road and turn right just past a cattle guard to reach the parking lot. From the parking lot, hike 1 km to the first trestle (#18). Another 2 km hike crosses 6 trestles and the first of two tunnels. The largest trestle is a 6 km hike from the parking lot. Ruth Station access is more difficult and may require 4 wheel drive. Follow KLO Rd to McCulloch Rd, but before reaching the Golf Course follow McCulloch Rd to the left and within 50 metres, turn right on to June Springs Rd. When you see a stop sign, turn left (still on June Springs Rd). Road eventually reaches the entrance to the Little White Forest Service Rd, a 4 km gravel road. Turn left at the first crossroad and drive another 1.5 km to reach the parking lot. From the parking lot, Trestle, #1 is about a 1 km hike and trestle #2 about a 2.5 km hike. A large metal trestle is 5 km from the parking lot.

OGOPOGO LEGEND The Ogopogo was named by the Vancouver Province newspaper of August 24, 1926 after an English music hall song called Ogopogo which was popular in the 1920's. The Okanagan First Nations people called the Ogopogo "N'HAATIK" which translates as "Lake Serpent Spirit". Folklore has it that the Lake serpent was said to live in a cave near Rattlesnake Island and claimed many lives. 5

The Ogopogo is said to be green in color with a horse or goat like head that swallows its prey whole. Its snake like body is one to two feet wide, and between 15 and 70 feet long. When swimming near the surface of the lake the Ogopogo's humps have been seen propelled above the water's surface.
