Traditional Medicine Class with Dr. Jeanne Paul On August 8th to the 10th Dr. Jeanne Paul, a naturopath physician, hosted a course on traditional medicine. The course taught participants about traditional medicines that grow in our local Syilx territory that can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments. The course took place at the Head of the Lake Hall, but had participants scouring the land all over the community looking for plants that have medicinal properties. Hilda Belanger and Coralie Gregoire participated in the course and were very pleased with the teachings that Dr. Jeanne Paul had to share with them.

Summer Rec Program was a great success, with both sessions this year being filled with 40 children. The children enjoyed their time here in center as while as on our many of outings.

Katelyn Abel is returning from maternity leave on September 19 in a new role as Assistant in the Preschool.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff who worked all summer. It has been quite busy and everyone did a great job to make the program fun for the children.

I look forward to a new school year and having everyone back in September.

Steve Bentley—OKIB’s new Cultural Immersion School Principal Way’ My name is Steve Bentley and I am joining the Cultural Immersion School as Principal this school year. I am very excited to be here and begin this new journey with you. I believe it is essential that we try to provide the very best education possible for the young people of the Okanagan Indian Band. The school has a lofty goal in the pursuit of restoring the language and culture of the Okanagan people and I am excited to be a part of this great adventure. Our goals this year, will be to promote the Language and Culture program in all aspects possible, while maintaining academics, the arts, and physical activities. We will focus on helping mold, with the help of the parents, the most successful students possible.

Steve Bentley - Cultural Immersion School Principal I come from Rocky Mountain School District No 6, where for the past 7 years I was principal at Windermere Elementary School for 7 years, and Vice Principal at Lady Gray School for 1 year. Prior to that I was Principal at Tahayghen Elementary School in Masset on Haida Gwaii for two years. I gained valuable experience and knowledge working in Northern Ontario, for 8 years on a fly –in Ojibway Reserve, for the Eabametoong First Nation in a variety of roles, mostly as a Principal. I was also a Digital Imaging Instructor at Fanshawe College for two years. My career as an educator began at Dunnville Secondary School as a High School Instructor.

Farewell to the Spirit World for John Douglas Williams Linda and Jo Deane Williams as well as the Williams Family (the boys) extend their appreciation and gratitude for all the help and support prior to and during the burial of Doug. Traditional Medicine: Interview with Hilda Belanger It was an amazing course, full of traditional knowledge, anecdotes, traditional medicine. I’m happy that Danielle organized it and put it together. Thrilled to hear [Dr. Paul] will be back in March when the medicines wake up.

It was a course on the traditional medicines that grow in our territory.

The medicines are here to treat the ailments that we as a people encounter. So, we were out on the land for part of her lecture. She would demonstrate what parts of the plants we use, where we go to collect these plants, etc.

The first day we went out across the lake to Antoine Road where she introduced the benefits of the two species of hawthorn. We took more than just the berries, took stems. When we finished from that section we went up towards Beau Park where we picked Oregon grape, burdock, horsetail, buckbrush, and devils club.

Dr. Jeanne has a holistic way of treating someone that would seek her out. She would first ask about the family, both sides, what ailments seem to be the most common aliments in their family. How long did someone in their family live, what they died from, on both sides of the family. The environment/area that they live, the things that they do, the people they come in contact with. Then she would perceive to ask were there any catastrophic events that happened in their lives. Any unresolved issues. And from there she would offer some treatment options.

She has way more than just teas; she has a variety of products that could help. She would offer multiple different products in combinations to help with whatever ailments the person has. She would prescribe them to take it over a period of four months, to where they would either drink it, ingest it, or apply it to their body; for three weeks on and one off, for four months. She would prescribe that a person would take a tea 5 or 6 times a day, whenever they want a drink, like instead of coffee. She recommended that we throw away our coffee pots and just drink the teas.

It’s very simple, we picked horsehair, you wash it, clean it, then just chop it into small sized pieces, and whatever you want it for. This variety (horse hair) is a tiny plant, its hollow, you trim it back to about an inch, her rule of thumb is one third/one third/one third; one third of your jar is medicine, one third is water, one third is your menstruum.

Before the course we were sent a list of things for us to bring to be preparing, of those things we have to bring our own menstruums (the menstruum is what’s going to draw the medicine out of your herbs, plants, medicines). That was ribena concentrate, apple cider vinegar, virgin olive oil, and alcohol. The purer the better. She recommended 40 proof vodka. There is a whole lot more than just those, but those were the ones put on our list.

So this is that you would make your tea out of while you wait for your tincture to be ready.

She will be coming back September the 6th and from there she will show us how to use our mixtures to make lotions, creams, sprays, and other things.

OKIB Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter Profiles Who are you? Hello, my name is Mike Doherty, I am the Captain and Training Officer for the Fire Department and I have been with the OKIB Fire Department for seventeen years.

Why did you join? I had joined 20 years ago in the OKIB Fire Department in June 2, 1996, back when it was a one bay, one engine Hall and I wanted to belong to something that was bigger than myself. I have lived in the community for 32 years.

I see my job as an honor to serve the community in this capacity.

Who are you? Way, My name is Garett Lawrence, I am the son of David and Bonnie Lawrence and I am the Administrator and Human Resource coordinator for the Fire Department and I have been with the Okanagan Indian Band Fire Department for eleven years.

Interests and Hobbies? Of course I love being a firefighter and all that comes with it, and I enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking, reading, board games, and volunteering my time to try and better the community, one step at a time.

Favourite Apparatus to drive? My favourite engine to drive is Engine Three; our medical and forest truck. I like it because it is one of our most important apparatus’s and it’s a great 4x4.

Why did you join the Fire Department? My father was Chief when I joined and the rest of my family had joined as well, so I thought I might as well see what it was all about, it was the best decision I made. My future goal is to continue with my officer training in hopes of becoming Chief in the future. I love being able to help the community from all sorts of emergencies, and it gives me a chance to give back to our Syilx Nation.

What is your highest Medical Training? Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and I also hold the First Medical Responder three certificate.

Who are you? My name is Tyson Besler, I have been with the Okanagan Indian Band Fire Department for 7 years.

Interests and Hobbies? Some of my hobbies include firefighting, weight lifting, and I enjoy riding Sea-doo’s on Okanagan lake.

Why did you want to join the OKIB Fire Department? I wanted to join the Fire Department for a few reasons, I wanted to do something where I could give back to the OKIB Community, and my great, great Grandfather and great, great uncle both served with the Vernon Fire Rescue for 50 years.

What is your favourite Apparatus? I like Engine One for its size and height, Engine Two because it’s manual and old, and Engine Three for its rugged body style and power.

What is your highest medical training? I currently hold my First Responder 3.
