OKIB COWGIRLS represent at Falkland Rodeo Falkland, BC - September 24, 2016 - Okanagan Indian Band members proudly represented their families at the BC Rodeo Association rodeo held this past weekend. The one day rodeo had great weather and a great crowd to cheer for the contestants There were over 60 contestants in the ladies barrel racing which saw Shalayne Lewis and Emily Wilson, both OKIB members, competing in the morning slack.

This was Emily’s first time entering in the adult division and competing against professional women’s barrel racers - including one who has previously won the Calgary Stampede. The fastest run of the rodeo was made by Shalayne Lewis on her horse, Tik, with a smoking 17.057 seconds. Emily Wilson ran a 20.001 on her gelding, Sugar. It was great to watch these two women challenge themselves and support each other in the sport of their choice.

Emily Wilson began running barrels just this year in the BC Barrel Racing Association as a junior. She began her season competing at jackpots at Brewer’s arena and her first rodeo was Chopaka at Easter. She has continued to jackpot at local races. Having recently turned 16, (Happy Birthday Emily!) she decided to enter Falkland in the women’s division. Shalayne Lewis has spent the summer competing in the WPRA circuit in the USA. Her parents, Vince and Sandy Lewis, have supported her every step of the way through her amazing journey to become a professional barrel racer. Shalayne feels blessed to have such amazing parents to back her.

September 16, 2016 As most of you are aware, Truman “TJ” “Snosulk” passed away suddenly on Thursday September 1, 2016 at approximately 5 am at our home in Kamloops. Already two weeks have passed since then and we miss him like crazy.

It is difficult to put in words how grateful we are for all the people who came forward to help us during this very difficult time. We had so much support from hundreds of people … in person, by email, through FB, through phone calls, through monetary/food donations, through beautiful cards/flowers, through the abundant feast cooked by the kind hearted Syilx people: Brenda Louis, Cecilia Louis, Ramona Wilson, Kalli Van Stone and all their helpers.

The hand drummers/singers were so powerful; they helped us release the grief and begin our healing journey. We were especially blessed to have spiritual guidance from Lyle Thomas and Joanne Gottfriedson.

Kukstsemc, I feel humbled and honoured by all the care and love we received during this very difficult time. I am taking the liberty to extend thanks on behalf of the rest of our immediate family - Amy (Jesse), Michelle (Michael), Francis (Marlene), Matthew, William, Trevor (Sonja), Elizabeth (Levi), Lenora and TJ’s imts (grandchildren) – Tate, Reese. OKIB Language Nest We have two sessions, in the first session we have children 0-3 years old, and in the second session are the children who are 4 years old (preschool).

We have six children enrolled in our first session, and we have five children enrolled in our second session. We are almost at full capacity for our 2016-2017 year.

Our program started September 12, 2016.

On-call Staff - Crystal John! We would like to welcome Crystal John to our team. She has a lot of experience working with children and will be a strong asset to our team. WELCOME TO OUR TEAM CRYSTAL! For our first month we are focusing on our children feeling comfortable with the language space and our staff and elders. We are focusing on the colours red, blue, and yellow, and we elaborate on these through art projects and clothing.

Wondering what is the Language Nest and what is it about?

The Language Nest Program, E hee-athinaugh chekwook"tl"ap il skwook"tl"eelt I'll "tl" ghugh "tl"a hap, What makes us so unique is that we are a program that has fluent speaking elders leading Language Revi-

talization by connecting with and directing the staff and children in the program.. The house in which the program is situated is meant to feel like “gramma’s house”where the teachers are the elders and the workers are there to be learners and take direction and help bridge the children’s needs.

Our Language teachers are Virginia Gregoire, Pauline Archachan and Adam Gregoire. The elders continue to work very closely with the children, and are involved in performing activities with them. We also have Mona Tronson who visits and prepares activities involving art and songs in our nsyilxen language with the children. Mona is another strong team member to have working with our children.

The children know a lot of the animals, numbers, days, colours, and foods. The table is the best place to learn. Since the program started we have encouraged the children to ask for food in Syilx. They are able to ask for more food items, such as bread, water, fruit, vegetables, and milk.

The Language Nest Program encourages young children to know about our Okanagan traditional foods, so we give our children a hands-on experience of harvesting and preserving in our language.

Our program will also be offering Traditional Parenting and Tupa’s Kitchen, and continuing with Language Nights. Everyone is welcome. Bring your slaxtaxt!

Also, it is an opportunity to come together and reestablish relationships with community members. It creates an atmosphere where children can learn from their parents and elders, but also it helps our parents and elders to learn how to teach and work with young children.

Another one of our objectives in Tupa’s kitchen is to use action words in our nsyilxen (Okanagan) language in the kitchen. An example would be our elder Pauline Archachan would say the action word, for example, I am going to cook, or pour into the bowl, and repeat it a couple of times, and then the children and the parents would also repeat. This summer we have learned to can and jam apricots and learned to make swxooshum juice with Louise Williams. We had four youth participants and they were great workers.

OKIB Language Nest continued…

Traditional Parenting Classes Our TPC (Traditional Parenting Class) opens up the first discussion of the history of colonization and how it has disrupted our traditional values and teaching that have sustained us since time immemorial. Parenting was a community responsibility where everyone had a role in raising child/ren in communities. Today, some families are on their own to raise their child/ren, so these classes will help build relationships with other community members and the outreach programs that are offered by the Okanagan Indian Band.

Language Family Nights is a program we offer parents, and their families, whose children attend our Language Nest Program. We inform the parents on what their children are learning at the Nest and encourage them to continue using the same language at home so it is repetitive and the children and parents will continue with their language acquisition in their own home setting We keep this program very open to our learners that attend our family language nights, and if they have questions about words or would like to learn a different word that we are not using that night our elder Adam helps them out with no questions asked. Our family Night Language teacher for family night is Adam Gregoire. He strongly suggests learners need to put at least three words together instead of learning single words.

2016 SALMON DISTRIBUTION It was a great summer and we distributed 2634 salmon this year! Awesome job!

The youth had a blast this summer and they really enjoyed being a part of the salmon distribution where they were able to meet community members and to share the happiness of our traditional foods. Also, they were able to learn how to make smoked salmon with Joshua Wilson and Will Poitras.

I would like to send a huge thank you out to our community members: Vern Tronson, Mona Tronson, Gary Marchand, Frank Marchand, QB Bonneau, Helen Wilson, and Mabel Saddleman. They helped our community by travelling with their vehicles down to Penticton and Osoyoos Lake to pick up salmon and deliver it back to Komasket. It was a great experience and they said they would do it again.

Community Where have you traveled?

I have traveled Canada and the US; I went up to Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. I'm excited to see what we will accomplish in the near future. In the early spring, my parents and I decided to season my horse Tik in the USA. My goal was to become consistent and with my mind set to win my pro card by 2017. We competed in the WPRA Pro Rodeo Tour in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. I found myself running against a lot of the big name girls that run in the NFR, such as Jenna Bean, Taylor Jacob, is an opportunity to learn and better ourselves as a Sherry Cervi, Sarah Rose McDonald, Cassidy Cruise unit. To know where you’re going you must know where you’re from.

Animals are our roots and the connection with them is so strong. I believe I can be a great role model to a lot of our people and many other tribes. I’ve been through a lot in my life and drug myself out of the mud. My life has been on opposite ends of the spectrum and with those experiences I am able to relate to a majority of the indigenous population. I believe I can inspire the younger population to live their dreams no matter the circumstance. To share my own story of where I have been to where I am now will hopefully spark a fire for people to change their ways for the better. Especially the younger generation because they are our future and are impressionable at a young age, so it is our duty to empower them. It’s why everything has been written the way it has in my life, I'm living proof that it’s possible. You just have to believe you can do anything, no matter where you come from. I will be the first Okanagan women to barrel race in the CFR as well as the NFR and I'm so honored to hold such a title.

To inspire the new generation to achieve beyond their dreams. As an entire people we need our youth to be strong, smart and proud of who they are. They must know to not give up at the first sign of struggle when embarking on a dream. Rodeo is such a family sport. I believe it will keep family closer and together and most of all supporting one another and hopefully that will spread. To think I can be a part of that brings great joy to my heart. Throwing seeds of faith is something special, it only takes one dream and pure dedication to accomplish ANYTHING. Your a role model to Emily Wilson, How does that feel?

Oh gosh I'm thrilled, I love that I have sparked a star in Emily’s heart, for her love of a dream and showing her the possible. Of what seems to be impossible, as long as she believes in her gift she will go very far and she will too inspire and be a role model to our people and the younger generation.

What are your goals?

Stay humble; take first place to win the # 1 horse in Canada at the CBHI Futurity Derby Canadian Championship in Ponoka Alberta this October. I’ll be pursuing my winter goal by going to Arizona and sharpening our athletic ability and knowledge. My goal is to start the WPRA Pro rodeo tour in January 2017 and race in Arizona, Texas and work my way up and hit rodeos all the way home. In order to be 100% ready for the Canadian pro rodeo circuit. Ill head to the first rodeo of the season in Alberta starting in April, my goal is to season her in the crazy rainy weather of Alberta. Running in mud is a whole different story!

That will be a whole new chapter but, for some reason, I think we will be just fine. I have a lot of confidence in her and our goal is to have confidence and consistency even on the less than ideal ground. Tik is just a baby she's only 7. My future goal is to get another horse that is just as fast as Tik or faster, and earn my way to the CFR and NFR. I will continue my career with those on top of my goal list, as I work to develop my creations towards rodeo. I believe I can and I know I will. God has a plan for me .I have faith his plan involves me running down the alleyway at the Thomas and Mack Centre at the NFR. Just to let you know that the word impossible broken down is, IM – POSSIBLE.

Mammograms In the past 2 years the Okanagan Indian Band Health Centre has provided community members with an opportunity of having the Canadian Cancer Agency visit our area. Through this screening there were community members who were diagnosed with Breast Cancer, in various stages. With the Mammogram Clinics it has given our community members to learn more about Mammogram screening, how to access services and begin a healing journey for their well being.

On December 1 & 2, 2016 we will be offering a Mammogram Screening Clinic through the BC Cancer Agency.

If your family has a history of Breast Cancer, please come on in, and yes you can ask questions. Ages of women being screened are from 40—75 years of age.
