Historic Fry Release Reintroduction of Sockeye Salmon into Okanagan Lake Okanagan Indian Band, I.R. # 1 - June 13, 2016 - The release of sockeye fry at Six- Mile Creek is the first release in the northern end of their habitat and the first of its kind since the Sockeye were extirpated from Okanagan Lake.

Okanagan Nation Alliance Fisheries staff brought up a truck load of ntytyix (salmon) fry for OKIB members to release into the creek. Community members braved the weather, which brought a downpour of rain and a few moments of hail.

Okanagan Nation Alliance Fisheries Department began a series of projects, beginning in 2004, working towards the reintroduction of sockeye salmon to Okanagan Lake. The installation of dams and habitat degradation has had negative effects on the ability of the sockeye to inhabit Okanagan Lake.

OKIB Territorial Stewardship Department hosted a dinner and a give-away.

The Language Nest Program, E hee-a-thinaugh chekwook"tl"ap il skwook"tl"eelt I'll "tl" ghugh "tl"a hap. is a program that has fluent speaking elders leading Language Revitalization by connecting and directing the staff and children in the program, which makes it so unique. The house in which the program is situated is meant to feel like “gramma’s house”. Where the teachers are the elders, and the workers are there to be learners and take direction and help bridge the children’s needs.

Our Language teachers are Virginia Gregoire, Pauline Archachan, Cecelia Gottfriedson, and Adam Gregoire.

The elders continue to work very closely with the children,

and are involved in performing activities with them.

The children know a lot of the animals, numbers, days, colors and foods. The table is the best place to learn.

Since the program started we have encouraged the children to ask for food in Okanagan. They are able to ask for more food items, such as bread, water, fruit, veggies, and milk.

The Language Nest Program encourages young children to learn about our Okanagan traditional foods by giving our children a hands on experience of harvesting and preserving in our language.

Our program will also be offering Traditional Parenting and Tupa’s Kitchen, and will continue with Language Nights.

We took a walking tour of the grassland trail, visited the pond and explored the hands on exhibit in the center. We also had a great time participating in the Okanagan Schools Traditional Games held at Komasket Park. This year we were able to go pick siya (saskatoon berries) with Mona because they were ready early.

The class got to take some home to share with their families, Mona showed them how to dry the berries and made some delicious jam!

There are very few people working in Vancouver looking after our whole province. If you filled out your application wrong or missed information, it could take another 6 months to register, so it is important that everything be filled out properly.

BLOOD QUANTUM/ VERIFICATION OF ANCESTRY LETTERS Requests are often received from individuals for letters confirming their percentage of Indian blood quantum for entry into the United States to live or work without a visa (GREEN CARD). Eligibility for registration as an Indian in Canada under the current and past Indian Acts has not been based on quantum of Indian blood descent. Blood quantum information therefore does not exist in the Indian Registration System. In Response to requests received from individuals for blood quantum letters, it is the practice of INAC registry personnel to provide letters verifying whether an individual’s parents and grandparents are or were registered. No names or other personal information are provided in these letters.

A Wonderful Gift Today I went to Walmart to do the shopping for the Seabird Diabetic Clinic being held on June 16 & 17. I finished and made my way to the till to check out and had everything rang through and realized that I was under. So I asked the lady behind me, “Would it be alright if I went and grabbed some apples and grapes for our clinic?”

She said, “sure.” I returned and they were rang through. I handed over the gift cards I was given to pay for my purchase to find out that there was only $5.00 on one and $43.16 ( Cards were supposed to be $143.16). The till said I owed $76.88! I asked if they could suspend my order and I would go back to the office and get another card? Before they could figure out how to do that, the lady and gentleman behind me said, “Don’t worry we will cover it!”

Shocked, I asked, “are you sure?”

On Sunday, June 5th, 2016 the Okanagan Nation Transition Emergency House (ONTEH) hosted and presented the 4th Women Are Sacred Awards at Spirit Ridge in Osoyoos. This effort to recognize the invaluable contributions Okanagan Nation women make in the Okanagan Territory and for the Okanagan people, occurs every two years. This 2016 event brought 250 Okanagan Nation people together in celebration of the achievements of Okanagan Nation Women. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and his wife Joan attended and shared words of experience with the audience.

Also present were Chief Jonathon Kruger of Penticton Indian Band, Chief Ryan Day of Bonaparte Indian Band, and various councillors from the 7 bands within the Okanagan Nation. Monique Gray Smith (Little Drum Consulting) was the keynote speaker and Kim Gouchie (http://www.kymgouchie.com/) shared entertainment with the guests. In total 54 Okanagan Nation Women were nominated for recognition in 7 award categories and all were honoured as “Community Champions”.

CONGRATULATIONS OKIB 2016 GRADUATES!

OKIB Education Department Hosts Graduation Banquet On June 30, 2016 OKIB families gathered to celebrate the successes of a new generation of high school and post secondary graduates. The banquet featured great food, a welcome address from Councillor Allan Louis, and the Okanagan Song performed on stage by Sherry Louis, Crystal John, Ramona Mary Louis, Sharmaine Gregoire, Devon Gregoire-Gabriel and Cathy Gottfriedson. This year saw a total of 30 students graduate with each receiving a Pendleton blanket. The planning process for the 12th Annual Traditional Games began on April 14th, 2016. This was the first day of my new position as an Education Assistant for the Okanagan Indian Band Cultural Immersion School.

On this day my supervisor outlined the responsibilities required of me to organize this event. We created a work plan of items to complete while school was out for spring break. During that two week period I completed the event poster, and the donation request letters to be delivered to local businesses and organizations. I also created the spreadsheets to compile each school’s student names and grades, and also their staff attending. This was very important for planning,

lem solve, and find ways of reducing costs as a team.

The meetings were productive and shaped the vision and desired outcomes for the event.

After following up with businesses that I had sent donation request letters to, I found the majority of them had already spent their yearly allocated budget for donations. A few businesses were able to give us really great discounts: Save on Foods for the sandwiches, Hi-Pro Sportswear for the ribbons, Swan Lake Nursery for apples and oranges. We received free bottled water from Prism Water Co, free volunteer t-shirts from Hi-Pro Sportswear, and free water bottles from the First Nations Education Steering Committee. Another source of support was the three volunteers from The Okanagan Nation Alliance Wellness Department. Once this was reported to the staff we began thinking of creative ways to work within our budget. We were able to provide a nutritious and tasty lunch for all students, staff as it gave the amount of people each school group and volunteers who attended. was bringing with them. After the Spring Break a goal was made to meet once a week as a staff to ensure all areas of planning were on course. For these meetings I wrote update reports, meeting agendas, and facilitated the discussion with the help of my supervisor. Meeting on a weekly basis became a struggling point for our staff, this was a very busy time at the school and we adapted our meeting times to once every two weeks.

We were able to start meeting on a weekly basis part way through May. These meetings were a major part of the planning process, as the staff at the school are very knowledgeable about the previous Traditional vided into groups based on gender and grade. Once the groups were organized we could calculate the equipment needed to set up each station. We decided on the following events for the grade 2-7 stations: 100m, 200, 400m and 800m races, Hoop Jump, Rock Throw, Spear Throw, Archery, Double Ball and Indigenous Games. For the kindergarten and grade one’s we decided they would do best in a separate area with the following stations: 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m races, Water Packing, Rock Throw, Spear Throw and an Obstacle Course. Based on the stations and groups needed I made a schedule for the event.

The best option was for the running to be done in the morning and the other cultural games after the lunch break.

Everything started to fall into place the last week before the event. Most of the coordination was done, the only thing left was to physically set up the venue. The volunteers were such a great help measuring and setting up the running track, putting up water and snack tents, putting up the banners, posters and signs, loading and unloading the tables and equipment needed. It was so amazing to see the community come together to help out before and during the games. As I walked around checking in with each station, I heard really great reviews. I was overwhelmed by the support of all who attended, it was such a great environment for the kid’s to feel encouraged, embrace their culture and rise to the challenge. I heard some of the elders present were very impressed with the running portion, they thought it was great for the students to build endurance. Unfortunately part way through the afternoon it started pouring rain. The students and spectators did a great job of keeping their spirits up despite the weather, but we did have to stop the event a bit early because of the rainy and windy conditions.

I’m very thankful to all of the staff, students, volunteers and community members who came out and brought their positivity to the 12th Annual Traditional Games.

This has been a rewarding experience for me, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to help this event come to life.

Annual Spring Concert and Graduation Ceremony The Cultural Immersion School celebrated the completion of the school year with a dinner, concert and graduation ceremony on June 23, 2016. The concert included Okanagan language songs, flute music, guitar (including a solo performance by Morgan), and drumming. Especially sweet was the primary grades rendition of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” in Okanagan. Language certificates were given to each student highlighting the strengths they brought to the class and learning.

TSD is initiating a 2 year research phase to develop a Watershed Restoration Plan. This plan will determine the processes for, and the level of, forestry harvesting.

Input from the community is needed for the following: 1. Identify traditional use areas 2. Information on other access and uses 3. How do you think the watershed should be managed?
