Adrienne Bootsma Leading the way in health and safety

A

s a manager in the world’s largest supplier of equipment and technologies for the wood processing industry, Adrienne Bootsma is a leader not only in her field, but in her community as well.

Bootsma is a respected and recognizable figure in the Shuswap region, having worked in various different capacities in the electrical plant at USNR for almost 20 years. Bootsma initially started her career in a four month student placement coop position at USNR, and hasn’t looked back since.

She’s progressed from being an electronics assembler to her present role as electrical plant manager at this globally recognized firm.

During her time at USNR, Bootsma’s interest in all aspects of Health and Safety has developed and grown.

“It wasn’t until I began working in the OH&S field that I truly discovered my passion.”

She confides. She currently heads USNR’s Joint Health and Safety Committee and is certified in OFA Level 3 and as a Laser Safety Officer and an X-ray Safety Officer.

“Safety is one of those unique things that brings together workers, managers, customers and vendors, as we seek a common goal,” explains Bootsma.

Society Safety Engineering Safety Professional of the Year award in 2010, and this year was named to Canadian Forest Industries Top 10 under 40 list. As a leader in her field, it was only natural that Okanagan College sought her out to assist in the development of the College’s new Occupational Health and Safety Certificate, being offered in Salmon Arm. Bootsma was an active member of the advisory committee that was put together to guide the development process of this new certificate.

Bootsma is always looking for new learning opportunities, whether for herself or for her students and colleagues. As an Instructor at Okanagan College, Bootsma has the opportunity to share her passion for Health and Safety with her students. As a business leader, she registers her teams for the the various computer and technology courses available through the College. And as a student herself, Bootsma is currently completing her Masters of Business Administration degree with a focus on health and safety leadership.

Indian Head Massage

The art of Indian Head Massage is part of the system of medicine known as Ayurveda (a Sanskrit word meaning Science of Life) and also has its influences from the style of massage commonly practiced by Indian women on their children and families as part of everyday life and passed on from mother and grandmother to daughter. Viticulture Certificate Gain the skills and knowledge essential to farm a vineyard or land your dream job in viticulture.

Through this program you’ll learn the scientific principles underlying grape growing for the purpose of wine production, the various influences on grape quality, and industry terminology.

Residential Construction Foundation Certificate Did you know WorkBC is predicting 10,000+ Jobs openings in Residential Construction over the next 10 years? This 26 week program will provide you with exceptional hands-on opportunities while you learn the skills necessary to gain your Level 1 Carpentry Apprenticeship. This program will introduce students to all aspects of the trade and focuses on developing practical skills for the residential construction workplace.

Welder Foundation Certificate This program prepares students for employment as a welder in industry. Graduates from this program will receive an Industry training authority certificate of completion, technical training credit for Welder Level 1 and Level 2 and 300 work-based hours once registered as an apprentice.

Electrical Foundation Certificate Graduates of this exceptional program receive credit for Level 1 apprenticeship technical training and may also be granted practical credit by the Industry Training Authority.

Plumbing & Piping Trades Foundation One program with four trades career path options! Plumbing and Piping Trades program combines the curriculum for Plumbing, Domestic/Commercial “B” Gasfitting, Pipefitting/Steamfitting and Sprinkler System Installer.

Earn technical training credit towards an apprenticeship in one of the following trades they wish to pursue - Plumber, Pipefitter/ Steamfitter, Gasfitter or Sprinkler System Installer.

Dual Credit Options: Are you in Grade 11 or 12 and interested in a trade? Check with your school counsellor for more information about getting high school credit and tuition paid..

CONTINUING STUDIES REFUND POLICY

Non-Certificate Course Withdrawal Refund requests must be made at least two business days (48 hours) prior to the course start date. No refunds are issued for requests received with less than two business days’ notice.

Students may withdraw by phone, fax, email, mail or in person.

Special refund polices apply to courses where indicated. Check the policy when registering.

Non-Certificate courses with tuition fees of $500 or more will have a five business day refund policy unless an exception is made by the Director.
