CONTINUING STUDIES

Ron Glave’s success story Ron Glave initially got into construction because he needed something to do during the off season from skiing. Twenty years later, he’s passionate about having a lasting effect on the construction industry’s Health and Safety culture.

Glave is the Occupational Health and Safety Manager for Vic Van Isle Group based in Revelstoke, B.C. He’s also currently completing the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) certificate via an online course with Okanagan College, and will graduate this December.

“The first five to ten years I worked in construction there was still very much a culture of male bravado,” says Glave. “People were regularly taking unnecessary risks and nobody was coming around asking ‘where’s your protection?’ Now, our industry is changing and maturing. Safety leadership is more common than before. I think it’s more important to come from a genuine concern for everybody’s well-being rather than strictly from a compliance standpoint. Stronger cultures also develop from logic and reason rather than shall and must.

“Health and Safety is definitely a great field to be in,” says Glave. “It’s growing, it’s necessary, and it’s rewarding. It’s great knowing that I’m making a difference, and that over time all the little wins, (and big wins) are positively changing the culture.”

One of the reasons Glave is working towards certification with the OH&S program, is the networking opportunities the program provides,

particularly because the health and safety field is mostly lacking in available mentors.

“You can feel like you’re on an island by yourself.

Unless you work with a large organization with multiple safety professionals that you can train under, you’re left sourcing a lot of important information on how to do things on your own. It’s great to be able to meet other safety professionals, connect to mentors, build a rapport, and know that we’re there to support each other. It definitely gives you the confidence and feeling of support to deal with the variety of things coming your way.”

As much as Glave is enjoying the OH&S online course, there’s definitely a drawback: staying focused during the summer takes additional discipline.

“It’s not a heavy workload, it’s just allocating the time to be consistent (studying and completing assignments) while balancing out the rest of life’s responsibilities. It also matters a lot what else you have going on in your life as in my case: working full-time, family, volunteering, relationships, friends, active playing, building a horse barn, and a fourth season of beekeeping. In the end though, I know it’s all very worthwhile.”

Would Glave recommend the OH&S program?

“Definitely. Continuing your education is so important, you need the theory to balance out the practical so that you’re the whole package.”

You probably know about Louis Riel or Gabriel Dumont. You may have heard about the Battle of Batoche or even the Battle of Seven Oaks.

But perhaps you are like many people who have never heard of the Scrip Commission and the land settlements negotiated with Métis families to extinguish their Aboriginal rights.

Little is known by those outside the Métis world about the connection between the historic and contemporary Métis community in B.C. and beyond. The Métis have been variously identified as brois-brule, voyaguers, cors du bois, half breeds, the invisible people (to list a few monikers). Métis, however, identify themselves as Otipemisiwak, the people who own themselves. Examine Métis history, identity, culture, and politics and the development of contemporary Métis communities in British Columbia.

Chainsaw ENFORM Certificate Course

Achieve industry-standard certification in chainsaw safety and give yourself an edge in the labour market. This three-day course involves seven hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of hands-on experience. Global Ground Disturbance Level II

Designed for anyone supervising a ground disturbance, independently performing a ground disturbance, or issuing and receiving ground disturbance permits. Topics include: regulations and variances involved when a ground disturbance takes place, necessary approvals/crossing agreements and regulations, how to clarify sources when searching for underground facilities, and how to provide notification to the facility owner. **WHMIS Legislation changes**

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) has aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS is a worldwide system. The WHMIS 2015 legislation is currently in force.

“In force” means that suppliers may begin to use and follow the new requirements for labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) for hazardous products sold, distributed, or imported into Canada.

However, there is a transition period with various stages. At the outset of the transition period, the supplier must fully comply with either the repealed Controlled Products Regulations (WHMIS 1988) or the HPR (WHMIS 2015) for a specific controlled or hazardous product. The classification, label and (material) SDS must comply fully with the specific regulation chosen by the supplier, and not be a combination of the two.

By Dec 2018, all businesses in Canada (manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and employers) must comply with all of the changes from WHMIS 1988 to WHMIS 2015 (GHS).

CONTINUING STUDIES REFUND POLICY Non-Certificate Course Withdrawal Refund requests must be made at least two business days (48 hours) prior to the course start date. No refunds are issued for requests received with less than two business days’ notice. Students may withdraw by phone, fax, email, mail or in person.

What is the certificate program about?

Classroom based training to learn how to assist children with diverse learning needs within the school system.

Where can I find employment?

Graduates can: • Work in elementary and secondary schools in B.C. as Education Assistants • Work with individual children in the home, or with adults as Special Needs Workers • Apply for their Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) license
