The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation We are truly honoured to have our new Centre in Penticton bear the name of Mr. Jim Pattison, recipient of the Order of BC and Order of Canada, and highly regarded entrepreneur and business leader in British Columbia.

Mr. Pattison’s association with The Centre sends an important message to students, industries, and citizens throughout the province and country that he recognizes and endorses the growth of sustainable building practices and applied innovation. His generosity and its leveraged impact will be instrumental in helping Okanagan College ensure The Centre achieves its goals by offering innovative programming, supporting emerging entrepreneurs, engaging in applied research, and producing a highly skilled workforce.

Thank you to Mr. Pattison and The Jim Pattison Foundation for taking a leadership role in this exciting initiative that will benefit generations to come and be of true global significance.

The main purpose of The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence is to educate students in the design, installation and maintenance of sustainable green building technologies. To achieve this goal, the building is more than just accommodation, it’s an environmentally responsible structure—a teaching instrument in itself, and an agent for progress in green building design in North America. To enhance the learning experience for students, the building is designed so that all systems and elements are easily observed, accessed and monitored. As a result, the building becomes a working model of the technologies being taught.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OKANAGAN COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORS As Chair of the Okanagan College Board of Governors, I have eagerly watched as The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation has been transformed from a concept into a building that has captured the world’s interest.

From idea, to proposal to project it has done much more than answer a pressing need for student space at our South Okanagan-Similkameen campus.

It has demonstrated what can be achieved when the Federal and Provincial governments invest in the future through development of post-secondary education infrastructure. This project is a shining example of how a great idea, matched with great people, and with tremendous community support, can change thinking and approaches.

When the Federal and Provincial governments announced the Knowledge Infrastructure Program in 2009, it was aimed to help address an economic downturn that had beset Canada. Investing in colleges and universities across the country has helped meet the needs of those institutions, created employment opportunities and built the country’s capacity to address our skills needs, not only for today but as a legacy for years to come.

Many have contributed to The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence, and as we celebrate its grand opening, there are many sincere thanks to be expressed.

For all those who know they have had a hand in creating this building, the greatest thanks should be in the satisfaction of knowing that the economic impact of the building will persist as students come, learn and graduate here with new skills and abilities. To the Government of Canada, the Province of BC and our many generous donors, without whom this would not be possible, you have the gratitude of Okanagan College and the entire Okanagan community.

A MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL DEAN SOUTH OKANAGAN-SIMILKAMEEN OKANAGAN COLLEGE “So exciting to be part of such an avant-garde project,” and “I’m proud – it is great to see the future today,” are just a couple of the comments that students and staff have expressed about The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence at Okanagan College in Penticton. The pride on campus is seen in the increased numbers of students and the exuberant use of the new facility – from the gymnasium and fitness centre to the Community Hall and the classrooms and trades shops. The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence has provided new opportunities for Okanagan College to achieve its educational mandate in the South Okanagan-Similkameen, as well as be an engine for economic development and a catalyst for demonstrating a new, more sustainable future.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the vision, the funding and the construction of the new Centre. Most importantly, congratulations and thank you to all the students and staff who, without complaint, struggled with limited parking, walked along pathways that were always changing direction, put up with the pounding of the pile driver and the numerous trucks that limited access to the campus. You were all amazing. To those students who have graduated and moved on to other endeavours, I hope that when you come back on campus you will take enormous pride in the role that you played during the construction and know that your sacrifices have resulted in a much improved campus that will benefit many students to come.

PROJECT SUMMARY The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation was conceived to meet the urgent need for tradespeople, site managers and construction workers who are skilled in the practices of sustainable building.

It was also designed to be one of most innovative and advanced sustainable facilities in the world, built to the standards of the Living Building Challenge, the most rigorous sustainability program on the planet.

CEI Architecture Planning Interiors was selected to lead the project due to the reputation of the firm’s collaborative design process, which seeks input from a diverse group of stakeholders.

The integrated design team recognized that achieving a facility with net-zero energy and water consumption, as required for the Living Building Challenge, demands a three-pronged approach to energy and water use: conserve, capture and create. Additionally, the design had to be highly adaptable, so that as time passes, new technologies can easily replace the old, ensuring relevance with the changing curriculum.

The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence building itself will be used extensively as part of the teaching curriculum. The design allows most aspects of the building and its systems to be accessible and demonstrable, using building data. To encourage conservation and behavioural adaptation, energy use is metered in each classroom, workshop, office and other areas.

CENTRE HIGHLIGHTS The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence is a living experiment in sustainable innovation, and a testament to the power of integrated design. Okanagan College hopes the lessons learned from The Centre’s design, construction and ongoing operations will educate students and inspire other communities to follow suit, resulting in a building that lives up to its name.

• Size: 6,780 net-square-metres: 14 classrooms and labs, five trade shops and a common tool crib, 300 student study spaces, gymnasium, fitness room, five suites of open-space offices (total capacity 30 staff), seven meeting rooms, innovation incubation space, an on-roof test facility for alternative energy devices, Women’s Resource Centre, one multi-purpose demonstration lab (for community use as well), and sustainable kitchen using high-efficiency appliances focused on healthy eating.

• Accommodates 800 full-time equivalent students.

• Approximately 600 people worked on the site during construction, with additional employees working in off-site production of materials. Estimates indicate 179 full-time jobs were created through construction of the building.

• The Centre incorporates innovation incubation space, in conjunction with Accelerate Okanagan. The goal is to nurture a growing high-tech, green-focused industry for the South Okanagan-Similkameen.

PROJECT MILESTONES • October 2008 Okanagan College embarks on planning for The Centre of Excellence.

April 2009 Announced that Okanagan College will receive $13.5 million from the Federal government and $9.1 million from the Provincial government for a total of $22.6 million.

The final $5 million will be raised by the Okanagan College Foundation.

• November 2009 Project breaks ground.

• June 2011 Centre opens to its first students.

• December 12, 2011 Grand opening of The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence.
