Would you like to produce digital recordings for musicians and music groups? Mix live concerts and sound reinforcement for public events? Autism Spectrum Certificate

This 81-hour program is for persons who work, interact and live with persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Courses will provide a thorough overview of ASD focusing on both theory and practical skills that will be useful for professionals, parents and/or caregivers.

If you want to work in today’s drafting and design industry, you must be able to use the industry-standard AutoCAD software. In this program, you will be trained to prepare technical drawings for a variety of manufacturers including those in the machining, electronics, and woodworking fields. You will also learn the basic CAD skills required to prepare working drawings for architecture, surveying, mapping, and graphic arts.

Basic Accounting Certificate

If you’re working to keep the books competently for a small business, or are interested in an entry-level accounting job, this 66-hour hands-on program can provide you with the necessary expertise.

It also provides a good foundation for those interested in pursuing computerbased accounting at a later date. You will learn accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles, and the rules of debit and credit. You’ll review the accounting cycle for a service business, learn how to manage a general ledger, prepare financial statements, periodic adjustments, and year-end books. You’ll also learn about specialized journals and how to track customers and vendors for a merchandising business, as well as inventory concepts, sales taxes, internal cash controls, and payroll preparation.

Graduates of this program can apply for transfer credit into BUAD 111.

This program is designed to prepare students for entry into the building service industry in custodial work, and upgrading those who are currently employed in the industry. This program is carried out in the classroom and in appropriate work areas.

Education Assistant Certificate

If you love kids and are looking for a career that challenges and inspires you every day, this program is for you! This 447-hour program prepares you to work as Education Assistant in a school setting with an emphasis on working as part of a team. The Education Assistant works under the instructional supervision of classroom teachers and employment supervision of other School and District level staff. Duties include helping to implement the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that has been developed by the team for individual children with exceptionalities in the areas of: cognitive abilities, physical challenges, severe health issues, behavioural challenges, autism and related disorders.

The program includes both theoretical studies and practical applications in such areas as understanding school curriculum and developing strong observation and related skills while working with children who have severe challenges. As well, it will encourage the imagination and creative ability of each student in the program.

Graduates of this program are well prepared to facilitate and support the learning and independence of children who require extra assistance in meeting their educational goals, and will gain hands-on experience through a 120-hour practicum in the classroom.

Green Building Design and Construction Certificate

As the economy and population continue to expand, the design, construction and operation community will face increasing challenges to meet the new demands or facilities that are accessible, secure, healthy, and productive while minimizing their impact on the environment. For the design, construction/renovation, operation, and decommissioning of a facility, there is an important relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments - the building connection.

This 360 hour certificate program gives students the skills and hands on experience to design and create building envelopes with a sustainable focus on the main functions of the design and construction of the building envelope, including solar and thermal control, indoor air quality, acoustics, aesthetics, construction waste management and cost effectiveness. The Introduction to Office Administration certificate program teaches a comprehensive package of skills designed to ensure that your application demands serious consideration from potential employers, even if you’ve had little or no previous work experience.

This challenging program blends coursework in all of the interpersonal and technical skills essential for success in an office. You’ll learn to problem-solve, multi-task, and work effectively in a team.

You’ll become adept at the language of business, both written and spoken, as well as math and basic accounting, whether manual or computer-based.

Completion of a suite of computer courses will ensure you can handle with ease everything from word processing and spreadsheets to email and Internet research. Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate

This program includes 90 hours of training covering a broad range of supervisory skills. The program is practical and emphasizes the development of skills through videotape analysis, films, lectures, group discussions, practice sessions, case studies and self-scoring inventories. Each course consists of 30 hours of instruction usually offered over a four day period.

Medical Device Reprocessing Certificate (formerly SPD)

With its focus on prevention, this 26-week program prepares you for a career combating microorganisms, creating safe and hygienic environments for patients. You will gain a comprehensive knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection control, cleaning, sterilization, the handling and storage of sterile supplies and decontamination procedures. A 400-hour practicum in a hospital setting allows you to apply your learning while gaining valuable work experience.

Graduates are eligible for certification with the International Association of Health Care Central Service Material Management.

Certificates Medical Office Assistant Certificate

Do you want an exciting career that provides opportunities to help people daily in a clinical setting? This 254hour program prepares students for employment in reception, clerical or assisting positions in medically-oriented facilities such as hospitals and doctors’ offices. Students will acquire skills to use effective oral and written communication techniques, demonstrate office procedures and time management, apply medical terminology in all courses, obtain a good understanding on the use of computers in the business environment, perform computer medical billing, and apply medical office guidelines and standards. Students will also learn to understand and adhere to medical/legal aspects.

Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate

If caring for people, being part of a team, and a fast-paced work environment sounds like your ideal career, this program is for you. A nursing unit assistant is a key member of a hospital health care team who assembles and maintains patient charts, handles the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, processes physicians orders relating to medications, laboratory and diagnostic tests, and surgical or treatment plans, and performs standard receptionist duties.

This program prepares you to work in a nursing unit with 324 hours of classroom instruction plus hands-on experience during a 100-hour practicum in a hospital unit.

Pharmacy Technician Certificate

This program is of interest to students who would like a formal training period, followed by interesting and varied job opportunities in the pharmacy field. Graduates work in community pharmacies and hospitals under a Pharmacist’s supervision. Some of the duties may include assisting in dispensing medication, inventory control, third party billing and pre-packing and compounding pharmaceuticals.

Certificates DISTANCE EDUCATION Bookkeeping Bridging Certificate

The Bookkeeping Bridging Certificate program is designed for students who have already acquired some financial accounting knowledge, and who wish to add to their employable accounting skills. In this program, students will learn two computerized accounting software programs (Simply Accounting and AccPac for Windows), plus Payroll Administration. $1,291.79 (including textbooks and materials + HST) Accepting applications for Fall 2011

Career Facilitator Certificate

The goal of the program is to enable participants to gain a skill base in the following areas: knowledge and understanding of career facilitation theories and their vocational implications; career and life assessments; functional program planning, with a focus on job search and career and life planning; effective placement planning; researching and applying labour market information and knowledge of supports needed for effective career planning. The program is comprised of seven courses totalling 252 hours of instruction. This program is targeted for professionals and para-professionals currently employed in the human and social service fields.

Community Brain Injury Services Certificate

The Community Brain Injury Services Certificate is a 108-hour program that educates students to work in a front-line capacity with individuals with brain injury, their families and other rehabilitation professionals. The program is designed as a post certificate or post diploma program for individuals working in or with a desire to work in the field of brain injury. This program will be of interest to those with training in social sciences or health related field such as: psychology, sociology, social work, occupational

therapy, education, Human Service Worker, Rehabilitation Assistant, Health Care Assistants, or nursing.

The brain injury community service provider is a critical member of the rehabilitation team and works directly with individuals with brain injury under the direct supervision of the clinical case manager or medical team which may include the physiotherapist, occupational therapist, physician, et cetera. The service provider is responsible for a wide range of services in the post-acute, community re-integration stage of rehabilitation. This program is designed as a part time program for practitioners with a desire to improve their clinical skills. $1,562.63 (including textbooks and materials + HST) Apply and start anytime

Pharmacy Technician Certificate

The Pharmacy Technician Certificate program is a 940-hour program which prepares students for employment as technicians in community and hospital pharmacies. Students gain knowledge and skills relevant to the technical and clerical aspects of the pharmacy profession.

Topics covered include: job orientation, pharmacy equipment, prescription preparation, mathematical skills in pharmacy, inventory maintenance, recordkeeping, pharmaceutical products, compounding, sterile product handling, hospital pharmacy procedures, computer skills, communications skills and the law as it applies to pharmacies, and the legal relationship between a pharmacist and technician.

The program includes theory, demonstrations, and practice in the classroom (labs held in Kelowna every May). Students will be assigned both a community pharmacy and a hospital pharmacy practicum. $9,574.80 (including textbooks and materials + HST) Apply and start anytime

ADMISSIONS Early application for all programs is strongly advised. Notice of program closures will be posted on the Okanagan College website. Okanagan College may cease to accept applications for a given intake or program if the number of applications submitted greatly exceeds enrolment capacity. Okanagan College is a multi-campus institution, and many programs are offered at more than one campus. However, not all programs are offered at all campuses.

How to Apply

Use the online application form at www.okanagan.bc.ca/apply. If you are unable to submit an application online, Okanagan College will accept paper applications.

While online submission of your application greatly speeds the processing of the application, how you submit your application is not a factor in determining your admissibility.

You may visit any of the campuses or regional centres of Okanagan College to submit your application. Assistance is available to help you use the online application process. You may apply to one or more programs in any given semester or program term. If you are admitted to more than one program, you will be required to accept only one offer of admission.

When to Apply

• You may apply online starting the first business day in November for Continuing Studies certificate programs.

• Most programs accept applications up to the program start. Some programs have multiple start dates throughout the year.

• All applicants are urged to apply as early as possible.

Response Time

Okanagan College will strive to respond to your application within ten (10) business days. However, during busy times of the year, please allow for up to twenty (20) business days for a response.

Distance Education

Distance Education courses begin in September, November, January, March and May. Distance Education students who plan to attend on-campus or by distance in subsequent semesters must reapply for admission.

Transcripts

As an applicant, you must ensure that official sealed transcripts are submitted for all institutions attended other than Okanagan College. Transcripts must have been issued within the previous six months. Current and past Okanagan College students and Okanagan University College students are not required to submit Okanagan College or Okanagan University College transcripts. Domestic applicants submitting out-of-province postsecondary transcripts will be required to submit a $30 transcript evaluation fee. International applicants submitting post-secondary transcripts will be required to submit a $150 transcript evaluation fee. (This fee is in addition to the application fee.)

This 30-hour course is designed for RNs and LPNs who wish to further their foot care skills for use in clinical and community settings. The foot care needs of our general population are being recognized nationally and nurses are in an ideal position to address this need. Since confidence and competency comes with practise, this course is designed to enhance the development of a knowledge base to bring greater understanding to the practise setting.

The emphasis of study and discussion will focus on healthy anatomy and physiology of the lower extremities so that deviations by the effects of aging, illness and various conditions can be recognized during assessment and nursing interventions adopted accordingly. Special consideration is given to conditions such as Diabetes Mellitis, MRSA and cardiovascular conditions prevalent in our communities.

Non-invasive techniques and procedures that incorporate knowledge of asepsis within the scope of our practice will be presented.

Health Immunization Skills Workshop

The BCCDC Online Immunization course, certified by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPNBC), provides Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with the knowledge and skills to become certified in the preparation and administration of immunizations to ages four and older in any health care setting.

In order to receive authorization to provide immunizations, you will be required to complete two components before CLPNBC will issue a certificate.

You will be required to achieve 100% on the BCCDC online Immunization basic exam prior to registering for a one-day Skills Workshop. This workshop will include theory review, instructor demonstrations followed by return demonstrations by the students, practical skills, and testing. PRENATAL EDUCATION The objective of our Prenatal Classes is to allow the mother-to-be, her partner and/or her support person to gain the essential knowledge of a healthy pregnancy, learn the practical skills so important to a positive childbirth experience as well as receive valuable information on early care of the newborn. Our childbirth educators work in partnerships with the client, health professionals and the community.

As soon as pregnancy is confirmed we encourage expectant women to enrol in the class that best suits them.

This second in a trio of point-and-shoot camera courses by Tom Cooper was developed for camera owners wishing to move beyond the pre-programmed modes (Auto, SCN, Portrait, Landscape, Action, etc.) to tap into the potential of their cameras using a creative shooting mode (Program Auto (P) or similar). Leisure Studies MOTORCYCLE TRAINING Okanagan College has teamed up with V-Twin Motorcycle Riding School (Okanagan) to offer the best rider training opportunity in the BC Interior. There are courses available for all levels, from New Riders to Experienced or Returning Riders. Custom training options and road test preparation are also offered. Our instructors are the most experienced instructors in the Okanagan, and all are ICBC licensed. Motorcycles and helmets are provided for new riders, while returning or experienced riders can use their own bikes. WITHDRAWAL/ REFUND POLICY:

Students may withdraw from a course by phone, fax, mail or in person. Full refunds or a letter of credit will be given if the request to withdraw is made at least two business days in advance of the course start date, with the exception of certificate programs.

For certificate programs, there is a $200 non-refundable deposit.

Refunds can take up to 2-4 weeks to process and are issued by cheque. Refunds do not include the cost of books, supplies, meals, travel expenses or other nontuition charges.
