Benefits of Belonging “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many man-

sions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:1-3 KJV).

The miracle of redemption reveals a great mystery. Why would the Creator, after investing Himself in our existence, provide an avenue of forgiveness for fallen humanity? He who breathed life into existence, He who formed the creature, He who placed the stars and scattered the planets, separated the heavens from the earth, scooped out the oceans with only His hand, spoke vegetation and life-forms into existence, “Loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

The message remains an enigma! He became like us so that we might become like Him! “He escorts me to the banquet hall; it’s obvious how much he loves me.” (SS 2:4).

The benefits of divine grace exceed the boundaries of human reality. The fact of belonging enables identity, provides relationship, reveals strength, and affords a future.

Belonging enables identity not because of who we are but because of whose we are. The mere thought of being a King’s kid overwhelms our mental reasoning. Skeeter Davis penned the words, “I’m a child of the King. His royal blood now flows in my veins and I who was wretched and poor now can sing. Praise God, Praise God! I’m a child of the King.”

Secondly, belonging provides relationship. David cried, “Declare me innocent, O Lord, for I have acted with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart. For I am always aware of your unfailing love, and I have lived according to your truth.” (Psalm 26:1-3).

Paul described such a relationship when he asked, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” (I Cor. 6:19-20).

Not only does a believer find identity and relationship, our weaknesses reveal His strength. His blood covers our sin; He hides our soul from evil; He carries His children through the fire and the flood. Because we “belong” to Him, “He knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone – as though we had never been here.

But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s children of those who are faithful to his covenant. (Psalm 103:14-18).

In 1911, Julia Johnston wrote these words, “Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace that is greater than all our sin.”

Recently The Martins wrote and recorded, “I was in prison, locked up in chains. Sin held me captive to sorrow and pain.

Years of frustrations as love passed me by. Until the Master heard my hearts cry. For grace, marvelous grace, I needed grace to pardon and make me whole. Grace, marvelous grace, flows from above with infinite love, marvelous grace. I am forgiven! I am redeemed! A brand new creation! He saved me and gave me a reason to sing.”

Finally, belonging affords a future. Paul spoke of another world when he said, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory.

But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.” (Romans 8:16-18).

Jesus announced, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” (John 14:1-3) The security of our future rests entirely in our belonging. THAT will PREACH! However, the points of the above “sermon” provide a framework of our “belonging” to this earthly fellowship of the Oklahoma Assemblies of God Ministries. We share diversity and uniqueness yet find covering through identity. We relate to the larger body of Christ yet enjoy benefits of relationship through belonging. Our weaknesses fade as we unite and together affirm, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.” Until He transforms this mortal into immortality, our future as the Oklahoma Assemblies of God affords unlimited opportunities!

These individuals are PK’S and understand the uniqueness of being a PK. We are also looking at ways of ministry to our younger PK’s. We appreciate leadership allowing us to invest in this ministry.

PK Retreat is but one of the avenues of ministry. This ministry has been in process for some time but has had a few adjustments in the last few years. If your son or daughter has not attended this retreat I certainly would encourage them to do so. Because of the desire to get to know the preachers’ kids many of the director’s here at the District office attend this event.

It is a relaxed weekend that provides activities and ministry to your PK. It takes place at Turner Falls, for ages 12 through 19, on Labor Day weekend and cost relatively nothing. If interested please go to the District website to download information and forms.

Missions Leadership for the Local Church It has been said over and over again that everything rises and falls with leadership. I see no one disagreeing with that time worn axiom. The parallel truth then begs for missions leadership in the local church. If there exists no leadership for missions the people will never discover their potential for missionary partnership and the needs will not be met.

last year’s missions giving. I have also, immersed myself as to why some churches excel in missions and others give embarrassingly little. It occurs to me that leadership is the answer. Some pastors show timidity toward raising money, while some don’t know how.

Obviously, more reasons could be listed. The bottom line still falls on leadership.

I have selected six Oklahoma pastors, our peers, who have exemplified missions leadership in the local church. All of these pastors rank in the top 10% of missions giving for the Oklahoma District. None made the top five; however, they represent a cross section of can-do pastors. All six of these pastors have shown tremendous leadership in getting the local church to support our missionaries.

I urge you to stay or come to the missions banquet at School of Ministry this year. The pastors scheduled to speak represent you.

They face what you face. I promise each one will have a fresh word to us that will be extremely relevant.
