As an artist raised on Nollywood stories in Lagos, a professional life in Paris has made the dream of a different utopia evident, then a dream came; Nollywood week in Paris. Just a sound of it give hints of a wonderful thing, familiar, yet unknown, but what should it be like? More than a Festival, this is an occasion to say thank you to all those who dreamt what was going to become Nollywood today, an African success story worthy of sharing with the world, an industry that began like a never ending joke, is now a reference in global media, It is in our little effort towards balance and advancement in Nigerian cinema that Yk Projects presents this festival, to make a resounding echo of all those who worked so hard to make the dreams become films; to be watched all over nigeria, all over Africa and throughout the world. Today Nollywood is on the big screen in Paris, so the dream became NWP 2013. On behalf of the organising team, I wish you all bon voyage to Nollywood.

Kunle
Afolayan
Adekunle Ayodeji Afolayan (aka Kunle Afolayan) is an award winning Actor, Producer and Director, whose foray into film making could be seen as somewhat coincidence or destiny. Kunle, son of the Legendary Nigeria filmmaker in the 70s- Ade Love, is a graduate and well trained business administrator, and even pursued a career in banking before fully venturing into film making. This gentleman in his midthirties and a father of four kids could not fight the calling of his first love: film! And he made sure he got it right when in 2005, he enrolled at the New York Film Academy all in the commitment of self-improvement and professional excellence, and thereafter he began to shoot short feature pieces before full length films.
“I [focus] on what most people are not paying attention to - production value and attention to details.” - Kunle Afolayan

Kelani
Qui est TK ? Who is TK? My full name is Babatunde Ayinde Kelani. My first name Babatunde in the Yoruba language means, my ancestors have returned in me – a reincarnation of the Kulodo Nigbori lineage of the egungun masquerade cult. It’s shortened to Tunde and TK in professional and domestic circles. I have worked in all known technologies of making motion pictures in a career spanning about forty years.
L’esprit Nollywood? Nollywood spirit?
Film production in Nigeria did not start with any name. The Nollywood tag is less than twenty years and great filmmaking pioneers some of whom are still alive have mentored me. But I am excited that Nigerians were able to appropriate technology and use it to give Africans a voice. The rapid advancement in digital filmmaking continues to empower more Africans to tell their stories.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le cinéma ? Why cinema?

At first I did not start out to be a filmmaker. I fell in love with the camera since I was twelve and invested my time and money in amateur photography throughout my secondary school. I became apprentice photographer when I graduated from secondary school instead of going to university. I saw all the American films in neighbourhood cinemas and gradually, made the connection – cinema to share my cultural experience was far more powerful and a necessity than photography.
Comment vous situez-vous au sein de Nollywood ? How do you situate yourself within Nollywood? My indigenous cultural expression is non-negotiable. Nollywood seems to suggest that making films in borrowed foreign languages is superior to one’s
language and culture. This is not true. One is a copy, the other is originality. I am immersed in a fusion of folklore, Yoruba literature, philosophy, spirituality, Art,dance, music, procession etc. A foreign language cannot capture or express all in any depth.
D’où provient une bonne histoire ? Where does a good story come from?
Coming from a traditional background, good stories stem from one’s folklore. Good cinemas also come from literature. I was exposed to Yoruba literature from primary school and easily compared to Greek mythology and other literatures. It is easy for me to compare Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest to Anikura or any of our traditional heroes.
What role does visual story telling play in your movies?
Cinema is a visual medium requiring a pictorial sense. Sometimes, the resources available to you determine the length you can go. Inevitably, I have to work in low budget. Nollywood does not have access to funding either from government or financial institutions. You’d have to be creative and resourceful to achieve more with less.
Usually, I have a loose idea of what the next day brings. My excitement comes from not knowing the variety of activities each day may bring. I do what others do – I eat, sleep, wake but allow the divine to fill my day.

Vos artistes préférés ? Your favorite artists ? I have been influenced by great dramatists – Hubert Ogunde, Kola Ogunmola, Duro Ladipo, Oyin Adejobi, Sonny Oti, Akin Sofoluwe and lately, Wale Ojo, Wole Ojo, Phebian and many more. The artists of the travelling theatre tradition inspired and impressed me. The new generation are interpreting performance in a new medium and a new world.
A quoi ressemble une journée normale ? What does your normal day look like?
What’s the most difficult part of your job? I am never short of visions. The most difficult part is finding the resources to bring my innermost desires to reality.
La suite ? What’s next ? I am already in pre-production for the next film, Dazzling Mirage, a love story with sickle cell disease theme. Wuraola, an adaptation of Femi Osofisan’s novel, will follow this. The production of Yoruba classics adapted from stage drama will come later.

L’esprit Nollywood ? Nollywood spirit? Nollywood m’inspire. I get inspired by Nollywood. It’s not how you start, it’s where you end up. You start with Living in Bondage and end up with Omotola on the 100 list. You couldn’t have scripted it better.
D’où provient une bonne histoire ? Where does a good story come from? For me, the stories can come from anywhere, the trick is to tell the story well.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le cinéma ? Why cinema?
What role does visual story telling play in your movies?
Movie making started when I was in Drama School at the University Of Cape Town. Cinema made the most sense to me and I fell in love with the medium.
Comment vous situez-vous au sein de Nollywood ? How do you situate yourself within Nollywood? I don’t think of it consciously, but ultimately I guess we are all trying to tell our stories, with our own voice and for our audience and beyond.
Visual story telling is key for me. I always start with an image and work from there. I push hard to get what I want but I am also very practical because on any given day every film crew is involved in a race against time.

What’s the most difficult part of your job?
I feel blessed to be in this industry and no matter what the difficulties are (perhaps raising money for projects etc) I am always conscious of the fact that it’s a privilege to do what we do, so for that I am thankful.

I am a Nigerian based in the UK and since early 2000 have quickly gained an enviable reputation as one of the brightest creative minds working within Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry commonly known as Nollywood. pour le moins sinueuse. The path to where I am today has been winding to say the least. I first studied Theatre Arts at university of Nigeria Nsukka. Then I played professional football on graduation. But when I arrived in the UK and my football didn’t take off; I realised that I could not make a career as a starting theatre artiste. So I had to be pragmatic and find an alternative career that would have transferable skills and still allow me the time to practice my craft. Law was that career. I studied for an LLB and practiced as a solicitor

for a few years while honing my skills as a filmmaker. I literally had two parallel careers until 2007 when I decided to turn my back on the practice of law and face filmmaking squarely. Although it was rough at the beginning, it was one of the best decisions I made in my life.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le cinéma ? Why cinema?

I shot my first film in 1999. I had just finished a stage play at Lewisham Theatre in London and realised nothing after putting in so much. I told myself that I needed to move with the times and align myself with TV and cinema. So I went and bought a camera and an Apple edit system, wrote a script called Damn Good Friends and shot it as director, producer, editor, actors, make-up artiste, costumier...I was everything. It was one of the steepest learning curves anyone would have in the industry. The next year, I returned to Nigeria to join the industry. I never settled, upset by the lack of integrity in the industry at the time and the fact that my films were seen as foreign. But what drove me back to the UK was the treatment I received in the hands of ‘marketers’. After several films I gave up and returned back to England. But I promised to come back when the circumstances were right. I started, in collaboration with a few people in London, to grow a cinema culture for our people since the demise of the DVD as a format for films was on its last legs. We realised that we needed to have a cinema base if we were to be taken seriously as a
Obi Emelonye film industry. That cinema audience development spanned a few films but culminated in THE MIRROR BOY which became my comeback film into Nollywood. It was what I call a confluence of circumstances. The timing was right the project was great and the marketing was exceptional. The rest they say, is history.
Comment vous situez-vous au sein de Nollywood ? How do you situate yourself within Nollywood? I practice what I call ‘creative brinkmanship’ which simply means dealing in subject matters that are edgy, a bit provocative and contemporary. Then I look for alternative narratives all across the project and then shoot it with heart, soul and skill. It has worked wonders for me and stood me out in a very crowded industry full of great talents.
D’où provient une bonne histoire ? Where does a good story come from?
The Mirror Boy - Obi Emelonye
A good story must come from the heart and that is why it must connect with every human, irrespective of where they are from. It must deal with our common humanity, our collective experiences. Like everything artistic, it is not enough to have a good story. It must be told with great skill to keep the audience spell bound and literally take them on a journey. That is what I try to do with each film.
say Nollywood has started digital democracy in the world and have shown peoples of other countries that it is possible to tell their own stories without spending millions of dollars.
Vos artistes préférés ? Your favorite artists ? Jim Iyke Last Flight to Abuja
What role does visual story telling play in your movies? Nollywood started as mainly domestic scenarios. However, a new generation of Nigerian filmmakers are attempting to tell a different kind of story from Nigeria. Like Last Flight to Abuja these stories are requiring a certain level of visual realism to tell them with conviction. Right now we are using things like CGI, animation and Visual effects to tell increasingly more technical tales. There is also the availability of great cameras at reasonable prices. I would
There are a lot of great artists in African cinema. I have worked with some of them but still looking forward to collaborating with others. Also there are great performers comeing on to the scene and stamping their talent on everything they do. It is a most exciting time for Nollywood. I think it would be most unfair for me to mention names.
A quoi ressemble une journée normale ? What does your normal day looks like? As every filmmaker will tell you. No two days are ever the
Obi Emelonye same. That is what makes this career exciting and fulfilling. For us, unusual is the new normal and I wish I could define that...but I can’t.
La suite ? What’s next ?
What’s the most difficult part of your job?
One of the most difficult things about what we do is finding the money to make a film. After you have made the film to the best of your ability, there is the little problem of making it work commercially. The thing that marks great filmmakers from others is their ability to master these two crucial aspects. What is needed in between these two is a skill base that is common in that they can be acquired or hired.
I have already made my next film. It is an Igbo language film called ONYE OZI (The Messenger). It was shot in London as a personal project that I have been wanting to make for a while now. Hopefully before the end of the 3rd quater of the year, I would be embarking a huge project that would be aimed at world domination. It is called La Femme Anjola. Exciting time to be a Nigerian filmmaker and a great time to be Obi Emelonye.
Exciting time to be a Nigerian filmmaker.
