Højer Møbler A/S, a company in sustainable development Højer Møbler is a Danish company with more than 25 years of experience in developing, producing and supplying learning environments to the education sector. We believe that detailed, considerate design in the form of functional, inspiring and innovative solutions supports different learning styles, and creates the optimum conditions for developing minds. The right solution is not only about choosing the right furnishings, but it includes interior design, using the furniture to support teaching goals and promoting well-being and learning.

We believe that, in the future, schools and local authorities will be more and more aware of and demand that the furniture and solutions they buy are sustainable. We want to contribute and inspire, by bringing our knowledge and skills within sustainability to educational institutions, so that schools and local authorities become role models in the spread of sustainability.
The UN’s Global Goals Højer Møbler’s sustainability policies must also contribute to improving the UN’s 17 Global Goals. Højer Møbler can actively influence 7 of the goals with its sustainable policies. See an overview of our own global goals on page 12.

Consideration for the planet and economy When we make furniture, we set high standards for its durability, quality and stability, whether it concerns the products we develop and make ourselves, or those we sell on behalf of others. This is due to our experience and knowledge of teaching environments, which has shown that classroom furniture is exposed to heavy use. Long lifespan of up to 20 years which our products are designed for, ensures that our customers get the best value for money, and that we reduce the average environmental impact of the furniture. Longevity is a quality in itself.

From linear economy to circular economy For many years, man has maintained a linear lifestyle, in which raw materials are extracted, products are produced, used, and finally discarded. Many irreplaceable resources are lost at the expense of our planet. That’s why we need to think differently to protect the common resource represented by raw materials.

The circular economy is the answer! Circular economy is a sustainable and responsible model, in which products are recycled again and again. Højer Møbler is actively working to create circular business models for the benefit of people and the environment. One of our ideas is to make modular products that can be maintained and refurbished, avoiding having to discard the entire item when only one component is damaged. We also work with redesigning/upcycling worn-out furniture to become "new" furniture, forming part of the school’s interior. Recycling old products saves the planet's raw materials. 5

Respect for people When we develop our products, safety in use and application is essential to us, both in terms of chemicals and construction. We have therefore tested several of our proprietary products at the Danish Technological Institute for off-gassing and strength. We also test product durability and functionality in selected educational institutions. Naturally, this means that All our own products comply with Danish indoor climate labelling requirements, and that several of our products are indoor climate tested by the Danish Technological Institute. 6
We are proud to state that our own products do not contain substances that appear on the Danish Environmental Protection Agency’s list of undesirable substances. (REACH list)

Activating learning environments respect for people As part of working with the UN's Global Goals, Højer Møbler will contribute positively to goals 3 and 4, which concern Good Health, Well-Being and Quality Education. We work to ensure that pupils and teachers enjoy healthier and better education, and a better working life. We want our products to support the teacher's ability to provide varied and active education, and to encourage students to change their working posture and move more often. In addition to providing physical well-being, movement is essential for learning ability and thus also good for concentration. That’s why it is important that interior design should encourage movement, while accommodating different personality types and learning preferences. We are all different, and we all learn differently. That's why our mission is to create ROOM FOR EVERYONE, and give students and teachers the freedom to determine where and how to learn/teach the best. As a means of defining the degree of freedom in learning environments, we developed “The 4 Degrees of Freedom”. In consultation with the customer, we can use this concept to create a common understanding of the needs to be met by furnishings. 8

FSC® We strive to take account of the environment and people in everything we do. That’s why it’s perfectly natural for us to work with FSC® certified wood, and include it in our furniture production. We are working towards completely transforming our production, so that all our own products with wooden components are developed with FSC® certified wood. FSC® certified wood As an FSC® certified company, Højer Møbler undertakes to separate FSC® materials from materials from other sources in production and storage. We ensure that our products and components maintain traceability certification throughout the supply chain, i.e. every stage of the supply chain must be FSC® certified. This process is checked annually by an independent certification firm.
FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) is an international non-profit certification organisation for wood and paper. No more trees are taken from an FSC® forest than the forest can reproduce. FSC® is a guarantee that animals and plant life are protected, and that the people who work in the forest are trained and have proper safety equipment and pay.

We focus on responsible, sustainable production, via which raw materials are saved. We are developing high quality modular products with long service life that can be maintained and refurbished. We sort all our factory waste and recycle packaging, and are actively working to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, Højer Møbler is actively working to change the purchasing practices of local authorities, so that sustainability is prioritised.
