PUBLISHER’S NOTE, BEST OF OJAI 2021

ur local Ojai business owners deserve more than our patronage, they deserve our empathy and high praises. These entrepreneurial, and perhaps stubborn people, believe as I do that the Ojai Valley deserves to be more than a diversion on the way to somewhere else. Our local businesses are part of the reason why Ojai is a destination and a fine place to live. Ojai residents like to think of themselves as a cut above Amazon and big-box shoppers and the best of what we have to offer is laid out before you on these next pages, according to our online readers’ poll. Who are these magical people who keep us from driving off our hill — the folks who anticipate our every need, make goods and services available, then smile and say hello to us at the park, or on path, or in the jacuzzi. What drives them to persevere during fire, flood, market crashes and pandemics?

The Ojai Valley News is more indebted to the local businesses than perhaps anyone. In addition to everything else these business owners provide, they deliver your local newspaper every week. Eighty percent of our newspaper revenue comes from their advertising dollars, supplementing the true cost of subscriptions. Without a strong local economy or local newspaper our valley is not a community, it’s a place. Dear business owners, let me be the first to congratulate and thank the gold, silver and bronze Best of Ojai winners of 2021, and also to thank, from the bottom of my heart, all of the people participating in Ojai’s local economy. I encourage my fellow villagers to greet these dear shop and service owners with affection whenever and wherever you may find them; they represent the backbone and pride of who we are as a community.

Laura Rearwin Ward With affection,

Capturing carbon through soils and plants! A vibrant, healthy garden can be yours - We can make it so!

2021

Thank you Ojai Valley Community for keeping your beloved local gardening and landscape company viable through these past 28 years. We are grateful for the opportunity to make an impact in this Precious Valley. We offer our skills in improving the soil health, collecting surface water and planting woody plants that capture carbon from the air and water from the sky and return them back into the soil where they belong. Can you imagine if all Ojai gardens followed this method? Our air quality would highly improve and our water holding capacity in the soil would allow a more verdant, vibrant valley to be actualized! Love to all who Love this Valley! Jessica Thompson and the Green Goddess Crew
