About oikos oikos is an international student-driven organization for sustainability in economics and management. Founded in 1987 in Switzerland, we today empower leaders to drive change towards sustainability worldwide. Our programs embed environmental and social perspectives in faculties for economics and management. They comprise conferences, seminars, speeches, simulation games and other initiatives to transform teaching and research. They promote the integration of sustainability in curricula and provide platforms for learning, creating and sharing solutions. The heart of our organization are our student members who turn ideas into action, currently in 50 oikos chapters around the world. They are supported by a global community of oikos alumni, advisors, faculty, and partners, as well as an international team based in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Letter from the Presidents We are happy to present the oikos Annual Report 2018 and an outlook to 2019. It has been a year full of positive, inspiring changes for oikos. We expanded our activities to new places and welcomed the first oikos East Asian chapters from Suzhou and Hong Kong to our community. Over the past year, the oikos network of more than 50 chapters has driven ahead over 200 projects worldwide to transform economics and management education and embed sustainability in our everyday life. This year, we saw that an unprecedented number of young people took sustainability matters in their own hands. oikos is humbled to have been a part of this global youth movement towards a more just, resilient and sustainable future for over 30 years now.

In 2018, we organized a multitude of programs and events, that brought together our change agents and facilitated a dialogue among different stakeholders. We hosted the largest oikos LEAP Meeting in the Swiss Alps to help young leaders become more responsible in their decision-making. At the oikos FutureLab, our flagship conference, we discussed challenges and opportunities for building lasting change both in our classrooms and beyond. Moreover, in order to realize our vision of economics and management education purposed for a sustainable world, we launched a new Curriculum Program. To always have our hand on the pulse of recent developments, we together with the members from our global community also refined the governance of the organization. In 2019, we will continue developing and strengthening our network to achieve the oikos vision and mission. We will focus on bringing all oikos stakeholders together, designing innovative pathways for integrating sustainability into economics and management education and equipping student leaders to spearhead the process of overcoming the sustainability challenges of our century. Finally, we would like to thank all the people who contributed to oikos in 2018 and whose continuous engagement has enabled us to venture with utmost confidence into the next year. We want to thank our members for their exemplary commitment and inspiration, alumni for the incredible legacy, and finally our partners and advisors, whose guidance and support makes our work possible.

FutureLab

The FutureLab is an annual oikos conference that brings together oikos members, alumni, faculty and partners, as well as representatives of academia, business and politics to discuss pressing sustainability issues and design initiatives to overcome current challenges. This year, the conference took place in Geneva, Switzerland from 26th to 27th October. We are deeply concerned about the sustainability (or lack thereof) of our current economic system and are eager to create an educational experience in economics and management that takes sustainability seriously. To reect this in the FutureLab, we split the event in half, with one day focusing on "Change in the world" and one on "Change in the classroom".

Building Change in the World Over two days we were joined by a parade of informative and energetic guests, starting with Graeme Maxton of the Club of Rome who challenged us to focus our work on ďŹ nding systematic avenues toward radically reducing carbon emissions. A panel on the role of business in building a sustainable economy followed immediately. Here the tables were turned, and the oikos community was able to challenge panelists by questioning how much their enterprises can and should contribute to sustainability. After two rounds of workshops that covered everything from responsible leadership to data visualization to sustainable fashion, we ended with what was an honestly inspiring session in which some of our invited guests shared their stories of making the change before turning the microphone over to our members.

Building Change in the Classroom

The next day shifted focus to the economics and management education and to the importance of embedding sustainability in the higher education system. What followed was an exuberant exchange of concerns and ideas for change. We led off with a series of speakers that not only laid out the problems with economics and management, but showed concrete steps being taken to make the situation better.

We then divided into smaller groups and tried to build up an ideal curriculum, producing concrete lists of both the values a reformed curriculum should be based on and the specific activities that should be included within it. After a round of workshops designed to give students necessary skills to campaign for curriculum reform, we closed out the event with a session that took a panel of professors and a rotated inset of oikos members who were able to feed into a conversation about our vision for a new curriculum and how we can go about implementing it. With the support of the Swiss climate protection organization - myclimate, which offset our emissions, we reached another milestone and made the FutureLab 2018 climate neutral. The speakers and participants, their enthusiasm and hope, shaped the event and reaffirmed our belief that Building Lasting Change is indeed a possible endeavor.

spring meeting The Spring Meeting is our annual event that aims to explore a concrete sustainability topic and helps build a sense of community among our members. Hosted by a dierent chapter every year, it facilitates an exchange of experiences and ideas among our local groups. oikos Barcelona volunteered to welcome over 120 oikos members and alumni to their mesmerizing city from 8th to 11th March 2018. The event looked into the topic of sustainable tourism and mobility. Speakers discussed some of the challenges posed by the tourism industry and explained how the industry could contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A number of workshops led by green companies and oikos community members examined sustainable tourism and mobility in detail. The participants, for example, learned how sustainability could be integrated into real business models, what are the responsible mobility practices prevalent in other countries and how dierent schools of economic thought would tackle problems in the tourism industry.

Winter School 2018

Winter School students for sustainable economics and management

oikos Witten/Herdecke hosted the 14th oikos Winter School in Witten, Germany from 1st to 7th of March, 2018. The Winter School titled “Bottoms Up, Tops Down” revolved around Sustainable Development Cooperation and explored main drawbacks and challenges in the field. Twenty avid individuals were selected to participate in the Winter School. The participants from all walks of life and from as different parts of the world as Italy, China, Austria, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, and El Salvador came together to discuss the topic among each other, as well as with leading experts and professionals in the field. The organizers created a pleasant atmosphere where everyone felt welcomed and willing to share their own ideas and thoughts. “The open-minded and very nice people, both from the organizing team and participants enabled having a personal and trustworthy environment in which everyone’s input was valued. Thanks for such an amazing 5 days!” – wrote one of the participants. The Winter School proved a great success. The participants were happy with both the academic and the organizing parts of the Winter School and left Witten with a renewed sense of commitment to sustainability, as well as with a better understanding of international perspectives and challenges of the sustainable development cooperation.

LEAP Program oikos LEAP is a leadership development program that enhances participants’ knowledge and skills and urges them to reflect on their experiences in order to grow and become responsible leaders at a forefront of sustainable development. The oikos LEAP welcomed over 120 participants to its Basic, Presidents and Advanced Tracks in 2018.

A LEAP year in oikos begins in October with the first on-site meeting of the LEAP Presidents and Advanced Track participants and ends in June, once LEAPers from the Advanced Track bid farewell to the program. From 19th to 23rd of October 2018, oikos LEAP participants, our members, alumni and partners, came together in a beautiful village of Leysin, in Vaudois Alps, Switzerland. There, they spent a week full of energetic discussions, poignant and heartfelt exchanges, impact-driven workshops, and brilliantly funny and invigorating energizers. Moreover, our LEAPers welcomed about 20 students and teachers from Leysin American School to an open event of the meeting - World Climate Simulation. The meeting also determined who among the participants would join the LEAP Advanced class 2018/2019. 28 millennials who rose to the challenge have already completed their first reflection and webinar.

Applying for LEAP was my best decision this year. I got to know so many wonderful people and learned so much from them. I know oikos better, know the goal we are fighting for better, know the world better, and most importantly, I know myself better. I will cherish this experience and make it a starting point for my future journey in sustainability.

If I had to pick only one thing to keep in mind after the LEAP meeting, it would be to take the time to get to know everyone around me, regardless of any differences or preconceived ideas. There is something beautiful in each and every one of us, and I am now more curious than ever to discover that beauty. Fanny Tappe oikos Alumna 12

LEAP Program A year ago the LEAP Advanced class 2017/2018 comprised of 26 millennials embarked on the 9-month long self-development journey. During this time, through peer-to-peer calls, one-on-one coaching, reflection guides, webinars and the second on-site meeting in Barcelona, the participants discovered their leadership potential and came closer to understanding their values and purpose in life. They bonded and sprung lifelong friendships with people who just months ago were mere strangers to each other.

LEAP is like a spaceship taking you on a journey through the wonders of life, human interactions, your own personality, your dreams, goals and fears. On this spaceship I got the opportunity to challenge my views, values and perceptions on things like success, confidence and money; My view on leadership has changed from a leader having to direct and guide subordinates to a leader who empathically creates environments in which people can flourish and unfold their true potential.

Curriculum Program

At oikos, we want to transform education for a sustainable world. One direct way to do this is to work to change economics and management curricula at the universities where we are present. To help member groups work towards local change we are launching the oikos Curriculum Program. The program officially kickstarted with a workshop titled “Building a Better curriculum” at the FutureLab 2018. The workshop was designed to help oikees think through the purpose of their education, and dream up new ways to teach economics and management. oikos will provide special support to oikos chapters to adapt and replicate the workshop in their own universities, and hence contribute to oikos positioning on this topic. Going forward we hope to expand the program and use it to work directly with our chapters on the issue of curriculum change.

oikos-PRME Research Hub The oikos-PRME Research Hub is an online platform that welcomes students at Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels to share their ongoing or finalized research on sustainability-related topics. The platform, run jointly by oikos and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), aims to encourage students worldwide to write thesis that address sustainability challenges of our time and to introduce their findings to a broad audience. The main impetus behind the oikos-PRME Research Hub is a conviction that choosing a thesis topic puts students in the driving seat in defining their own curricula. We believe that the growing number of students in economics, finance and management who are making sustainability an integral pillar of their thesis also provide important impulses and inspiration for others to move in that direction. The oikosPRME Research Hub enhances this very dynamic. Interested students can submit their research through the oikos webpage. 14

Cases Program The oikos Cases Program supports the development and use of cases on sustainability. It comprises the annual oikos Case Writing Competition and the oikos Case Collection. The Online Case Collection includes inspection copies of all winning cases, as well as runners-up. Furthermore, the oikos Free Cases provide cases to lecturers around the world free of charge, under the Creative Commons license. In 2018, oikos invited students and leading researchers from around the world to submit cases in one of three tracks on corporate sustainability, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable finance. An international jury of leading faculty named 12 finalists and selected the following winners:

Corporate Sustainability: Eliminating Modern Slavery from Supply Chains: Can Nestlé Lead the Way? by Syeda Maseeha Qumer and Debapratim Purkayastha, ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad, India.

Sustainable Finance: Can Barry Callebaut Attract Sustainable Investment with its ‘Forever Chocolate’ Strategy? by Debapratim Purkayastha, ICFAI Business School Hyderabad, India, Trilochan Tripathy, XLRI, Jamshedpur, India and Benudhar Sahu, ICFAI Business School Hyderabad, India.

Social Entrepreneurship: Jaipur Rugs –Empowering Communities at the Bottom of the Pyramid through Social Innovation by Syeda Maseeha Qumer and Geeta Singh, ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad, India.

Launched in 2003, the Cases Program grew in accordance with contemporary sustainability needs. While the competition began with a single track on corporate sustainability, in 2009 it expanded to include a track on social entrepreneurship. In 2013 it further introduced a sustainable finance track. Fifteen years later, recognizing the complexity to label sustainability cases in different categories led us to relaunch the oikos Case Writing Competition in a renewed format. In 2019, the Competition has only one track on sustainability, therefore expanding the scope of possible topics addressed through cases. The goal is to promote the writing of high-quality cases on sustainability topics that stimulate innovative teaching and learning experiences.

Associate Program oikos Associates join our international management team to pursue their passion for a particular topic, and to explore key questions, examine answers, identify innovative players, and develop their own perspectives around it. They also take the lead on organizing workshops, debates and roundtable sessions on their topic of interest, and foster an exchange within the oikos community about the issues at hand as well as share their insights in a final report. In 2017, oikos welcomed J.Christopher Proctor as an Associate in Pluralist Economics. He prepared an oikos Guide to Pluralist Economics in 2017 and led a number of workshops all over Europe and in the USA throughout 2018. He travelled to oikos chapters and attended partner events with a goal to promote the idea of Pluralist Economics, introduce a large number of competing theories to his audience in order to broaden their understanding of economics and encourage them to think of innovative possible solutions to countless problems in this field. The workshop is easy to replicate and we encourage our members to organize one in their local chapters. To receive all the necessary material, reach out to oikos via email at info@oikos-international.org

J. Christopher Proctor Over the past 30 years oikos has built an impressive community of people who want to use economics and management education to make the world a better place. Most of my year with oikos was spent on the move, getting to know as many oikees as possible and representing oikos at a marathon of conferences, workshops, summer schools, gatherings and festivals. I’ve learned a lot along the way, and I hope that I’ve managed to leave behind an appreciation for diversity in economic thinking and a vision of a radically more interesting economics education.

PhD Fellowship The oikos PhD Fellowship Program was initiated in 2006 to support outstanding international PhD students writing their thesis on sustainability in economics or management and provide them with an opportunity to engage in oikos programs. In 2018, we were pleased to support Stefano Ramelli. Stefano joined oikos in 2016 as a PhD fellow at the Department of Banking and Finance of the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His research interests are in the field of corporate finance and governance, and the relevance of sustainability topics in financial markets.

Stefano Ramelli:

oikos " PhD Fellows:

I am so grateful to oikos for my PhD fellowship. Throughout the past three years, it gave me the opportunity to advance my research and I feel like a sort of "oikos ambassador" in finance research. In 2018, the budget that I was granted as part of my oikos fellowship allowed me to attend several international conferences on finance and sustainability.

Three years into my PhD, I am still strongly motivated to advance the research on finance and sustainability, not only through my own works but also through initiatives to support the young scholars in this field to connect and create a community. When talking about sustainability and finance, we strongly need a new multidisciplinary approach to research and education. We need more initiatives like oikos."

Expedition

With the support of the "Expeditions" program of the Mercator Foundation Switzerland, oikos Outreach Manager Clementine Robert moved to India in October 2017 to deepen our connections with the oikos community on the subcontinent and enhance understanding of complex sustainability issues in the global oikos network by exploring a different sustainability standpoint. Clementine was hosted by swissnex India in Bangalore. She explored India’s stance on a number of sustainability challenges, met with leading actors in sustainability, as well as with oikos members, alumni and faculty and learned about their local projects, needs and aspirations. In June 2018 Clémentine rejoined our team in St.Gallen, Switzerland to share the lessons learned and integrate the emerging country’s sustainability perspective in the oikos International programs and activities. 17

Alumni Impressions Moritz Schwarz, oikos London: oikos has connected me to a group of young, dynamic people who never get tired to challenge the status quo. They look beyond the immediate future to think about what can really shape society in the next decades to create a more sustainable world. And I’m looking forward to meeting one or the other former oikee along that way. Alexis Anglot, oikos Paris: I have always cherished and maintained relations with oikos alumni. Every couple of months, French alumni gather in Paris. These gatherings are to me more than mere dinners. They keep the oikos spirit running through my veins and give me the strength to continue my journey on the path of sustainability.

Shad Tebay, oikos Edmonton: Since I returned to school as a mature student and mother to a young child, my studies were my only focus. But there were bigger plans for me and after meeting the co-presidents of oikos Edmonton, I could not stop the momentum! As a proud alumna of oikos, I will always continue to coach, mentor, and support all the initiatives put forward by this incredible group.

Mrudula Tanari, oikos Kolkata: oikos Kolkata posed a unique challenge to me... It also instilled a lot of conďŹ dence in me and helped me develop a sense of ownership. With a great network of wonderful people, oikos is a library of endless learning.
