PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 校長的話
It is with tremendous pride and excitement that I present the 2024/25 Annual Report, celebrating a year of historic milestones for Lingnan University. Our relentless dedication to quality education, research, innovation, and international collaboration has truly become the engine of our success riding along with digital transformation. By integrating this research directly into our education, we are not just teaching; we educate innovative and critical thinkers who will thrive in the digital age. We are aligning perfectly with the HKSAR government’s “Study in Hong Kong” initiative to cultivate forward-thinking talents ready to make a powerful contribution to a better world.
World ranking: a historic No. 1 in Quality Education
This year, Lingnan University achieved a defining moment on the global stage: we were named No. 1 worldwide for Quality Education (SDG 4) in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025. This spectacular achievement makes Lingnan the first university in Hong Kong to lead the world in any of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This is more than an accolade; it is a resounding endorsement of our commitment to teaching excellence, our unwavering support for students, and our deep involvement in building an inclusive, sustainable future.
Innovation on the global stage
Thanks to our world-class faculty, Lingnan has gained unprecedented recognition in innovation. The 2024/25 academic year was marked by record-breaking victories:
• 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva: We secured a record five awards, including a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury for the BLOOM baby incubator –a first for the University – alongside two Silver and two Bronze Medals.
• 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong: Debuting at this prestigious event, Lingnan triumphed with three awards (one Gold and two Silvers) amidst over 140 entries from across Asia.
Our drive for knowledge transfer is solving real-world problems, from food waste to breakthrough technologies. Crucially, we are championing social responsibility by tackling challenges for vulnerable populations – improving lives for those in subdivided units, supporting children with mathematical disabilities, and helping seniors thrive in the digital era.
At Lingnan, we are passionate about empowering our students to explore the globe. Our partnership with Peking University via the Lingnan – Yuanpei STEM Summer Academy ignites student innovation, while our summer exchange programme with Oxford University offers invaluable exposure at a world-class institution.
As we seize the momentum of the Northern Metropolis development, Lingnan has solidified strategic partnerships across the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Chinese Mainland. Capitalising on our unique position as the closest Hong Kong university to Shenzhen, we are supercharging our contribution to regional innovation. We are moving forward with purpose, reinforcing our vision as a leading liberal arts research institution, excelling in both arts and sciences for the digital age.
As we look ahead, our momentum is stronger than ever. Lingnan University is not only growing; we are setting new benchmarks in education, research, and global engagement. Each step forward adds to a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey. Together, we are not just aiming higher – we are leading with purpose.
Thank you.

Lingnan University upholds the motto of “Education for Service” and comprehensively supports students in their academic, athletic, and personal interests. The University is committed to creating an environment that fosters growth, enabling students to excel in diverse fields.
Exceptional students recognised with prestigious scholarships
Leung Ting-hei (Government and International Affairs) received the HSBC Overseas Scholarship, an award of HK$150,000 to support his overseas study exchange and broaden his international perspective.
He participated in the “Link Sound Sinfonia”, a community project launched by Lingnan’s Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit. The project helped adults with special educational to needs to connect with the community through music. He served as a music instructor, teaching guitar and piano. He hopes to make music with locals to experience different cultures during his time at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
After my experience with Link Sound Sinfonia, I’m considering becoming a music therapist. Although I’m majoring in politics, courses in political philosophy helped me realise that even in a diverse society like Hong Kong, many people are still overlooked. I believe music can offer them a way to connect with society and bring about positive change.
Lo Wing-lam (Psychology), Yeung Ching-yi (Animation and Digital Arts), and Wong Sum-yi (Visual Studies) received the HSBC Hong Kong Scholarship for their outstanding academic performance and active participation in community service. Additionally, Tang Kachun (Higher Diploma in Sports Coaching and Leadership) received the HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship.
Cynthia So Sin-fai’s (Chinese) outstanding academic achievements and unwavering dedication to community service stood out in the highly competitive prestigious For Our Future Scholarship field, where she was one of only 16 awardees across Hong Kong.
Cynthia embraces risk with open arms. In her second year at Lingnan, she was thrilled to be selected for the Lingnan Foundation W.T. Chan Fellowships Program. She had to take a semester off to take this opportunity, which she regarded as an exciting adventure, not cause for regret. In California, she completed an internship, went to seminars on various social issues, and volunteered at a non-profit educational organisation, teaching mathematics to young immigrant children mainly from Latin America. This experience not only helped her set her own goals, but also ignited a passion for giving back to society through education.
Only by facing difficulties can you truly unlock your hidden potential. Fortune favours the bold, meaning that taking courageous steps will lead to valuable experiences, regardless of the outcome.
Chan Ho-chuen (Philosophy), Matthew Chan Nok-fung (Sociology) and Kwan Wing-man (Contemporary English Studies) received The Hong Kong Jockey Club Undergraduate Scholarship in 2024/25.
陳灝傳(哲學)、陳諾豐(社會學)及關穎文(當代 英語語言文學)榮獲2024/25香港賽馬會獎學金。
Chan Lok-yee (Chinese), Lam Chun-yu (Contemporary English Studies), Su Jiawen (Translation, Cross-cultural Studies, and Corporate Communication), and Lee Sum-yuet (Business Administration) received the Link University Scholarship in 2024/25.
Cai Yuncheng (Social and Public Policy Studies), Lau Pok-to (History), and Pang Nap-shan (Film and Visual Arts) have been awarded the prestigious WeCan Scholarship in 2024.
Kelvin Li Tsz-yin (Economics) earned multiple scholarships and founded a startup, which led to his receipt of the “Most Distinguished Student of the University Award in 2024/25”.
The 2024 President’s Award has been awarded to Hui Qiuyuan from the first graduating class of Business Psychology. Hui’s impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.92 earned her the prestigious award.
With outstanding academic achievements and dedication to social service, Isaac Tsang Kinghin (Master of Social Sciences in Comparative Social Policy (International)) received the Dr and Mrs James Tak Wu Awards for Outstanding Service for Students in 2024/25.
Outstanding performance in national and international competitions
A team of eight postgraduates led by Prof Dong Chengzu, Assistant Professor of Teaching of the Division of Artificial Intelligence, School of Data Science at Lingnan University, won second prize in the zkWASM Hackathon held in Bangkok, Thailand.

A team from the Chinese Language Education and Assessment Centre of Lingnan University, led by Dr Zhou Bo, Senior Lecturer, and Ms Wei Sijing, Lecturer, was extremely successful at the 7th National Student Art Exhibition and Performance. The recitation of Transient Days by students Yeung Choi-yee (Translation), Lam Sze-nga (History), Chow Lok-yi (Chinese) and Leung Wai-lam (Data Science), won Third Prize in Group A of the Performance Category, along with a Teaching Excellence Award for their tutors, recognising the quality of their teaching.
The Lingnan team carried off the third prize in the 5th Virtual Reality AI Interactive Content Innovation International Competition 2024. The team included students from the SOC3203 Social Gerontology course: Chan Yiu-sheung, Dong Zitong, Liu Manlin, You Ya, and Tao Xuanlin. They created a VR version of the LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab, overcoming the constraints of time and geography to offer the public a better understanding of gerontechnology and the concept of ageing in place.

In August 2024, in the Women’s World Tennis Tour W35 Kunshan run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Cody Wong Hongyi (Sports Coaching and Event Management) was the champion and 1st runner-up in Women’s Doubles and Single events respectively. In February 2025, she captured her maiden W75 doubles title in the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour held at Leszno, Poland.
Lingnan has admitted three elite student-athletes through the Direct Entry Stream for Top Athletes (DESTA) for the 2024/25 academic year. The recipients are cyclist Ng Sum-lui (Sports Coaching and Event Management), Wushu Sanda athlete Li Ka-yee (Sports Coaching and Event Management), and ice hockey player Patten Lai (Data Science).
Sportsmanship is advancing courageously and never giving up. I think it’s similar to studying; continuous learning will be rewarded.
體育精神就是勇往直前不放棄。我覺得跟讀書一樣,不斷學習就會有收穫。
NgSum-lui 吳森鐳
The courses in Sports Coaching and Event Management complement our development in various aspects. For instance, the knowledge we gain in sports science helps us understand the mechanisms used in our training.
I chose to study Data Science because the Data Science courses here are new, and I think that as the world progresses with digitalisation, data science will be more and more useful.

Extending retired batteries’ lifespan and reduce environmental pollution
With the global rise in electric vehicles’ popularity, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has surged, leading to a considerable increase in discarded batteries. The issue of how to efficiently use “retired” batteries has become urgent, and to address this Prof Tang Xiaopeng, Assistant Professor of the Science Unit at Lingnan University, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, developed an innovative screening method based on a semi-supervised learning AI model for lifespan-based battery clustering, proposing a way to regroup retired batteries based on their service life.
The research team published a groundbreaking research paper titled “Lifespan-based Battery Classification towards Second-life Utilisation”, which won the Best Paper Award at the prestigious 2024 IEEE 25th China Conference on System Simulation Technology and its Application (CCSSTA). It was one of only four papers out of 278 submissions to receive recognition.
Big data analysis uncovers employment challenges in Hong Kong
Lingnan University released a report titled Data-Driven Job Search: Big Data Series Report on Hong Kong’s Employment Market, which analyses employment risks and emerging challenges in the city’s labour market. Led by Prof Pun Ngai, Chair Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies, the study used Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to examine over 140,000 job advertisements in Hong Kong. Findings reveal that more than 40 per cent of job vacancies are concentrated in traditional service sectors such as import-export, wholesale, and retail—industries highly vulnerable to external economic factors. While gig work in retail accounts for around 20 per cent of positions, demand for advanced technologies like AI remains low, with fewer than 2 per cent of vacancies requiring such skills. The research team recommends that the government support workers in traditional service industries through transition assistance and targeted crossindustry skills training to enhance employment competitiveness amid the current trade war economy.

The University is committed to a risk management process aligned with the principles of good corporate governance. It has established an Enterprise Risk Management framework to assess, prioritise, monitor, and manage potential strategic, operational, financial and compliance risks.
A Risk Assessment Exercise is conducted annually by all operating units to identify and assess key risks facing the University and to propose mitigating plans to reduce these in line with the University’s risk appetite.
Key risks are monitored on an ongoing basis, enabling the University to verify that risk management is relevant, effective, sustained and attuned to the achievement of its objectives. The University Risk Management Committee aims to develop a robust risk culture at the University. To do so, it implements the University’s Risk Management Policy, defines the University’s risk appetite for the Audit Committee to review prior to recommending it to the Council for approval, establishes Key Risk Indicators for proactive monitoring and reporting and ensures that risk mitigation plans are carried out as planned.
The Council has established 12 standing committees which are responsible for considering and advising the Council on matters under their purviews.
