嶺南大學於3月3日舉行「伍絜宜嶺南坊」及「伍絜宜跨學科學院」命 名典禮，並宣布將設立「專項研究基金」，支持師生運用人工智能及 數據科學進行跨學科研究，為社會的迫切議題提供創新解決方案。有 關項目獲伍絜宜慈善基金慷慨支持。
嶺大校董會副主席黃浩明議員太平紳士、校長及韋基球數據科學講 座教授秦泗釗教授在典禮上感謝伍氏家族及伍絜宜慈善基金多年來 對嶺大的堅定支持，並向已故伍絜宜博士致以崇高敬意。
伍絜宜慈善基金董事伍尚匡先生指出，基金十分認同嶺大多年來堅 持博雅教育精神，重視全人發展，亦見證嶺大在學術研究、人才培育 及社會影響力方面屢創佳績。
伍絜宜慈善基金長久以來對嶺大的支持涵蓋多個重要項目，包括學生 飯堂「泰寧堂」、學生宿舍「伍絜宜堂」、支持嶺大推動公眾認識中醫 藥理念和實踐的「起動．靜養．身心靈」計劃，以及新落成的「伍絜宜 嶺南坊」與「伍絜宜跨學科學院」。
Lingnan University held the Naming Ceremony of the Wu Jieh Yee Lingnan Hub and the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (WJYSIS) on 3 March. The University also announced the creation of a dedicated research fund to support faculty members and students conducting interdisciplinary research using artificial intelligence (AI) and data science to develop innovative solutions to pressing societal challenges. These initiatives are generously supported by the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation.
In their remarks, the Hon Augustine Wong, JP, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, and Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, praised the Wu family and the Foundation for their unwavering support of Lingnan over the years, and paid tribute to the late Dr Wu Jieh Yee.
Mr Jason Wu, Governor of the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation, said the Foundation recognises Lingnan’s long-standing commitment to liberal arts education and whole-person development, and has witnessed its achievements in research, talent cultivation and social impact.
Over the years, the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation has supported a number of major initiatives at Lingnan, including the Tai Ning Hall (Canteen), Wu Jieh Yee Hall (student hostel), and the Embracing Ageing – Health Management and Promotion Programme, which promotes understanding and practice of traditional Chinese medicine, as well as the new Wu Jieh Yee Lingnan Hub and Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

藝術展覽館由3月6日至 9月4日推出全新專題展覽「飛光飛光 中國藝術裡的時間意象」，精選二十四件橫跨元末至近現代的 水墨畫、瓷器、漆器及玉器等珍貴藏品，焦點包括展出被譽為 「現代水墨之父」的劉國松之《太空系列》作品，引領公眾從四 季、山水、仙境和宇宙視角，重新細味時間的意義。
是次展覽由嶺大數碼藝術及創意產業系策劃，並獲得致力推動 中西文化交流的「少雪齋」的支持，慷慨惠借珍貴文物及當代藝 術品，旨在帶領觀眾探索中國藝術如何將「時間」化為可觀看、 可感受的視覺語言。
In the fast pace of urban life, time slips quietly away amid daily routines. From 6 March to 4 September, the Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall at Lingnan University presents Fleeting, Fleeting Light—Imagery of Time in Chinese Art, featuring 24 rare ink paintings, porcelain, lacquerware, and jade dating from the late Yuan dynasty to the modern era. The exhibition highlights the internationally acclaimed Space Series by Liu Kuo-sung, revered as the father of modern ink painting. The seasons, landscapes, immortal realms, and cosmos shown here invite visitors to think anew about the meaning of time.
Curated by the Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries at Lingnan University, and generously supported by loans of precious antiques and contemporary works from the Chamber of Young Snow, the exhibition explores how Chinese art transforms the abstract notion of time into a perceptible visual language.

Lingnan University wins 14 awards at 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
Lingnan University has achieved spectacular results at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva with all 13 of the inventions it entered receiving awards. One of the projects, “FlexiBot: Make Every Parking Spot a Charging Spot”, also received an additional award, the "Thailand Award for the Best International Invention and Innovation" presented by the National Research Council of Thailand, bringing its total to 14 awards. The number of projects entered and awards received have more than doubled since last year, setting a new record for Lingnan.

香港特別行政區政府於3月12日宣布委任香港人工智能研發 院有限公司董事局成員，嶺南大學校長及韋基球數據科學講 座教授秦泗釗教授獲委任為該研發院的董事局成員之一，任 期兩年，由2026年3月13日至 2028年3月12日。
秦教授表示，對於獲委任為人工智能研發院董事局成員深感 榮幸，並期待與各界專家攜手合作，進一步促進本港在人工 智能科研、產業應用及人才培育的協同發展。
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region announced on 12 March the appointment of Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Institute for a two-year term from 13 March 2026 to 12 March 2028.
President Qin said he was honoured to be appointed and looked forward to working closely with experts from different sectors to promote coordinated progress in artificial intelligence (AI) research, industrial applications, and talent cultivation in Hong Kong.
Prof Leng Mingming earns sole Beta Gamma Sigma’s 2026 Dean of the Year Award

Lingnan University is proud to announce that Prof Leng Mingming, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Chair Professor of Operations and Risk Management, has been named the recipient of the Beta Gamma Sigma’s 2026 Dean of the Year Award. Prof Leng was the sole winner selected from over 640 universities across 39 countries and regions. The award is presented annually to one outstanding dean who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in business education and consistent support for students.

獲選拔的頂尖學生將獲得包括四年全額學費獎學金及四年全額住宿資助，並保證安排校園宿 位；同時獲安排由全球頂尖企業提供的 AI 培訓，並可獲頒授專業證書。同學亦將獲得傑出學者 的學術指導、優先參與研究項目的機會、與諾貝爾獎得主等知名學者專屬交流，以及在畢業後報 讀研究生課程時可獲優先考慮。
Lingnan University announced that it will officially launch the Samuel C.C. Ting Elite Class (CCT Class) in the 2026/27 academic year. The Class, named after Nobel Prize-winning physicist Prof Samuel C.C. Ting, will select the best undergraduate students from among recipients of the University Entrance Scholarships for this programme.
The students will receive comprehensive support over the four years of study, including a full tuition scholarship, fully funded campus accommodation, and AI training provided by leading international companies, with a professional certification. They will also benefit from mentorship by leading members of the faculty, priority access to research opportunities, meetings with eminent scholars, including Nobel laureates, and priority consideration for admission to postgraduate programmes.

Lingnan University has achieved outstanding results in the international higher education organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Nine broad and individual subjects were ranked, and more than half moved up. Philosophy came in the top three in Hong Kong, and Computer Science and Information Systems was included in the list for the first time. QS stated that only three Hong Kong universities have achieved a net overall improvement, with Lingnan University among the most improved.
Lingnan University is ranked in the Arts and Humanities broad subject area, as well as in eight individual subjects. These include Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Computer Science and Information Systems, Economics and Econometrics, Education and Training, English Language and Literature, Philosophy, and Sociology. Five of these, Arts and Humanities, Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Economics and Econometrics, and Education and Training have moved up the ranks year-on-year.

嶺南大學「嶺南高等研究院」於 3月10日在校園舉行頒授典禮，向普 林斯頓大學電機與計算機工程系奧古斯丁家族教授、蘋果公司傑出 工程師Guillermo Sapiro 教授頒授「嶺南院士」銜，以表彰他在機器學 習等領域的卓越學術成就及對相關領域的重要貢獻，並正式聘任他 為「嶺南高等研究院」嶺南院士。
Sapiro 教授同日受邀以題為「醫療領域的 AI 革命」發表演講，剖析人 工智能（AI）在生活不同層面的應用，尤其對醫療健康領域的深遠影 響。他結合自身前瞻性的研究工作，闡述 AI及電腦視覺在醫療服務的 推動作用，使其變得更普及、精確及全面，並以 AI自閉症篩查、健康評 估及生物年齡測量等實例，展示 AI 與電腦視覺等創新技術如何改善 現今醫療流程，提升診療效率。
The Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS) hosted a conferment ceremony on 10 March to honour Prof Guillermo Sapiro, Augustine Family Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton University and Distinguished Engineer at Apple, Inc. He was formally appointed a Lingnan Fellow in recognition of his remarkable academic achievements and significant contributions in the field.
Following the conferment, Prof Sapiro delivered an intriguing lecture entitled "The Real and Impactful AI Revolution Will Come in Healthcare", delving into the far-reaching influence of artificial intelligence with a particular focus on its profound impact on healthcare. His pioneering work demonstrates how AI and computer vision are making healthcare more accessible, accurate, and holistic. Prof Sapiro gave examples, such as AIpowered autism screening, nutritional assessment, and biological age measurement, to illustrate the real-world impact of these technologies.

同月 25 日，「嶺南高等研究院」再次舉行頒授典禮。國際著名數 學家、俄羅斯科學院院士、莫斯科國立大學教授兼院長 Eugene Tyrtyshnikov 教授正式獲任為「嶺南院士」，以表彰其在計算數學及 數值分析領域的卓越學術成就，以及為社會帶來的重要影響。
在頒授儀式後，Tyrtyshnikov 教授以「張量分解的理論與應用」為題 主持講座，向與會者介紹這種用於處理複雜數據的先進數學方法「張 量分解」，以及它在數據分析模型中日益重要的角色。Tyrtyshnikov 教 授亦闡述不同的數學方法如何協助解決複雜數據問題，包括提升數 據分析、科學計算及人工智能的效率和精準度，並談及一些至今尚未 破解的數學挑戰。
Later on 25 March, LUIAS held another conferment ceremony to officially appoint Prof Eugene Tyrtyshnikov, a distinguished mathematician, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Professor and Chairman at Lomonosov Moscow State University, as a Lingnan Fellow, recognising his outstanding academic achievements in computational mathematics and numerical analysis, as well as the significant societal impact of his work.
Following the conferment, Prof Tyrtyshnikov gave a very interesting lecture, “Theory and Applications of Tensor Decompositions”, describing the advanced mathematical method used to analyse and simplify complex datasets, and its growing importance in modern data analysis models. He also explained how different mathematical techniques can help solve complex data challenges, improving efficiency and accuracy in data analysis, scientific computing, and artificial intelligence, while also focusing on unresolved mathematical problems that continue to challenge researchers.

嶺大於3月17日假屯門校園舉行2026 年傳媒新春聚會，分享大學的最 新發展及未來數年的策略發展藍圖。
為配合嶺大持續發展的空間需求，大學近月增設新物業「嶺南 T-Plus」，總面積約3,600 平方米，將支援嶺大主校園，提供更多教學 場地及學習空間。
而嶺大位於屯門的主校園亦展開擴建工程，新建樓高七層的「嶺南教 育機構樓」，是大學首幢科學大樓，總建築面積約 8,000 平方米，將會 作為數據科學學院及跨學科研究中心的新基地。新大樓預計於2028 年落成，進一步提升教學與研究水平。另外，主校園亦將增建全新的 演講廳及「多功能館」，屆時將進一步提升校園的學習環境，豐富學 術與交流的配套。
校長及韋基球數據科學講座教授秦泗釗教授表示，回顧 2025 年，嶺 大在多個重要指標上取得「全港第一」或成為「全港唯一」，充分展現 大學教研實力與全人教育方面獲國際肯定。其中，大學於2025 年度 《泰晤士高等教育》世界大學影響力排名中，在可持續發展目標 「SDG 4：優質教育」項目位列全球第一。此外，嶺大亦成為亞洲首間 與聯合國大學合作建立「聯合國大學 嶺南大學人道創新及科技中 心」（聯大嶺南中心）的高等學府。

Lingnan University held its 2026 Chinese New Year media reception on the Tuen Mun campus on 17 March and announced the University’s most recent updates and its strategic development blueprint for the coming years.
The University recently acquired a new 3,600-square-metre facility, Lingnan T-Plus, which will support the main campus by providing additional teaching space and learning facilities.
The expansion of Lingnan’s main campus in Tuen Mun has begun with the construction of the seven-storey Lingnan Education Organization Building, the University’s first dedicated science building, which will have a floor area of approximately 8,000 square metres and house the School of Data Science (SDS) and the interdisciplinary research hub. It is scheduled to be completed in 2028, and will upgrade the University's teaching and research facilities. The Tuen Mun Main Campus will also feature a new lecture theatre and multi-purpose venue, aimed at improving the educational environment and strengthening support for academic events and the exchange of ideas.
Looking back at 2025, Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, said that Lingnan University achieved several “No. 1 in the Hong Kong SAR” and “Only one in the Hong Kong SAR” distinctions across key indicators, demonstrating that the University’s strengths in teaching and research, as well as its commitment to whole-person education, have received international recognition. These accolades include coming first globally in “SDG 4: Quality Education” in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, and becoming the first university in Asia to partner with the United Nations University (UNU) to establish the UNU Hub on Humanitarian Innovation and Technology at Lingnan University.

本年度預算案在促進香港特區發展「人工智能 +」方面給 予較大篇幅提出支援措施，校長秦泗釗教授對此表示歡 迎。秦泗釗校長表示，以嶺大為例，大學積極對接國家「 人工智能 +」行動，近年透過跨學科發展策略，在不同課 程層面深化「AI+X」跨學科培訓，尤其在智慧能源、工業 人工智能及低碳技術等範疇，均具發展潛力，積極利用AI 與能源、材料、環境、人文及社會科學結合，參與香港再 工業化及碳中和相關課題，培養具創新能力及國際視野 的研究型人才。
對於政府致力落實與國家工業和信息化部簽署的《關於 發展新質生產力推進新型工業化的合作協議》，促進產 業合作，並預留約二億二千萬元，在港建設首個境外的國 家製造業創新中心，秦泗釗校長表示，這有助香港推進新 型工業化，可強化香港在國家新型工業化布局中的角色定 位，也為本港高等院校提供產業對接的寶貴平台，進一步 加快推動創新研究的落地應用。
秦校長指出，高等院校可助力政府扮演技術源頭與人才 樞紐的角色。以嶺大為例，近年透過「跨越式」的轉型， 在傳統博雅教育的根基下，尤其在工業數據、智慧能源、 先進材料及人道科技等方向，建立以數據科學與人工智 能為核心的跨學科團隊，並加強與業界合作，推動技術 轉化，讓科創技術真正解決現實世界問題，而非停留於理 論或技術展示。

Lingnan University President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science Prof S. Joe Qin welcomed the 2026–27 Budget delivered by Financial Secretary Paul Chan, which included multiple policy initiatives related to education, innovation and technology.
Prof Qin said he was delighted with the Budget’s substantial support for the development of AI+ in the Hong Kong SAR (HKSAR). He said, “Lingnan has actively aligned itself with the national AI+ initiative, and through its interdisciplinary development strategy has integrated AI+X training into its curricula. There is true potential in areas such as smart energy, industrial AI, and low-carbon technologies, and the University applies AI in combination with energy, materials, the environment, humanities, and social sciences to address the HKSAR’s re-industrialisation and carbon neutrality goals, and to cultivate research-oriented talent with innovative capabilities and an international perspective.”
Prof Qin noted that the HKSAR government’s plan to implement the Cooperation Agreement on the Development of New Quality Productive Forces and the Promotion of New Industrialisation with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and to allocate approximately HK$220 million to establish its first national manufacturing innovation centre outside the Chinese Mainland, will advance new-type industrialisation.
He explained that the core of “new quality productivity” lies in using data, AI, and advanced manufacturing technologies to upgrade the industry. The government’s initiative is strategically significant, and will give the HKSAR a more important role in national industrialisation, as well as providing local universities with valuable platforms aimed at industry, thereby accelerating the practical application of research and innovation.
President Qin pointed out that higher education institutions can assist the government as both a source of technology and a hub for talent. Lingnan itself has undergone a radical transformation, building interdisciplinary teams concentrating on data science and AI while retaining its liberal arts foundation. Lingnan University welcomed nearly 200 higher education leaders from all over the world at its Tuen Mun campus on 27 February. The visit was one of the main activities of the 2026 Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Conference and Exhibition. Through campus tours and interactive exchanges, Lingnan showed its internationalised learning environment and innovative teaching facilities, actively highlighting Hong Kong’s unique advantages as an international higher education hub. The University also promoted the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, which aims to attract more non-local students to study and work in the city. Lingnan’s senior management, academic staff, and students explored opportunities to work with representatives in student exchange programmes, research partnerships, and talent recruitment.

Lingnan University proudly hosted its signature fundraising event, the Bright Future Charitable Foundation presents: Lingnan University Gala Dinner, on 18 March, and raised over HK$3 million. All proceeds will be used to enhance the University’s research facilities, supporting infrastructure, and to support cutting-edge research projects.

On 24 and 25 March, Lingnan University organised a University Forum, "AI for Education - Discover World-Class Quality Education”. The event was live-streamed across multiple platforms, attracting over 170,000 views on its first day. Principals, educational administrators, and academic experts from more than 30 renowned high schools across 10 provinces and municipalities— including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Shandong, Jilin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Sichuan—gathered at Lingnan University to explore pathways for educational innovation and the future direction of talent cultivation in the era of artificial intelligence.

Lingnan University’s scholarship award ceremony, organised by the Office of Student Affairs, on 30 March was attended by 230 participants, including Prof S. The 39th Awards Presentation Ceremony of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund was held at Hong Kong City Hall on 22 March. Mirnaali Natanakumar (Data Science, Year 4) received the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic performance and strong commitment to social welfare and development. For the 2025/26 academic year, only six students from the UGC-funded institutions were selected, each receiving a grant of HK$40,000.

After the five-station university tour of the 21st University Indoor Rowing Championships, organised by the Hong Kong Universities Rowing Committee, Lingnan’s men’s rowing team has emerged victorious.
At the final station, hosted at Lingnan, our team powered through the Men’s 4x500m relay in an impressive time of 5:56.09, beating strong teams from the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to take the station title.
Their consistent performances across the five-station university tour secured them the top spot on the leaderboard and the prestigious Men’s Overall Champion title. This outstanding achievement reflects their dedication and consistency.

The Lingnan University Lacrosse Team was runner-up on 22 March in the All Hong Kong Tertiary Students Lacrosse Competition organised by the Hong Kong, China Lacrosse Association. This is the fourth time the team has played in the competition, and it is their best result yet. They defeated last year’s champion, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and last year’s runner-up, The Education University of Hong Kong, and then beat Hong Kong Metropolitan University in the semi-finals to advance to the final against the University of Hong Kong, which includes several players in the Hong Kong, China Lacrosse Representative Team. Lingnan fought fiercely, and this second-place finish is an outstanding accomplishment.
Lingnan University and Ocean Park hold first international conference on conservation of Asian turtles
嶺南大學聯同香港海洋公園及香港海洋公園保育基金，於3月27日至 30日舉辦首屆「保育亞洲龜國際研討會」，匯聚來自19個國家及地區逾180 位頂尖學者、科學家、動物園管理員、獸醫、政策制定者、教育工作者等，分享亞洲龜保育的最新研究與實踐經驗，以及應對非法捕獵及加強瀕 危龜類保育的策略。
一連四日的研討會舉行約50 場專題報告及演講，涵蓋打擊非法貿易的鑑證科技、獸醫護理，以及透過人工繁殖及放回自然棲息地，增加瀕危亞 洲龜的野外族群等。在香港負責處理打擊非法捕獵和走私龜類的漁農自然護理署與香港海關亦有派員出席是次研討會。
Lingnan University, Ocean Park Hong Kong and Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong joined hands to host the inaugural International Conference on Integrated Conservation of Asian Turtles (ICAT) on 2730 March. The conference, attended by more than 180 leading scholars, scientists, zookeepers, veterinarians, policymakers, educators, and other experts from 19 countries and regions examined the latest research findings and practical conservation, as well as strategies to combat the illegal poaching of Asian turtles, and enhance protection for endangered species.
Over the four days of the conference, about 50 academic presentations and keynote speeches covered forensic technologies for combating illegal trade, veterinary care, and efforts to boost wild populations of endangered Asian turtles through captive breeding and reintroduction to natural habitats. Officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, who are at the forefront of combating turtle poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Hong Kong, also attended the conference.

從鹹魚、網球到粵劇
魚也可以是研究題目？「當然可以！香港是全球鹹 魚的主要集散地和分銷中心。港島西區的海味街 有被譽為『港版築地』的鹹魚交易市場，這裡的鹹魚透過 不同競投方式進行拍賣，不僅供應本地，更遠銷至海外唐 人街和餐館。」嶺南大學文化研究系助理教授冼基樺教 授滔滔不絕地介紹嶺大學生在畢業專題研究（Capstone Project）的成果，提到學生們甚至在專題研究展覽中煲鹹 魚飯，讓大眾一嚐鹹魚製作技藝的獨特非遺「味」力。
鹹魚是經驗與心思的結晶，畢業專題研究題目亦然。冼教授統籌文化研究系 的畢業專題研究，他強調每位學生都可以發揮自己的才華，「他們懂得的東 西，尤其興趣方面，可能比老師更深入。」作為老師及引導者，他透過提供研 究框架，鼓勵學生發問、探索和驗證，進而啓發學生思維，在互動中達致教 學相長。除了鹹魚，他也指導學生完成其他有關傳統文化的研究（例如：舞 龍、舞獅），他讚揚：「嶺大學生的研究選題極具創意和啟發性！」 教子打網球悟教學道理
對於教學反思，冼教授以其熱愛的網球為喻，拿起一雙網球拍分享了一段親 子軼事。「從兒子五、六歲起，我便教他打網球，可惜多番嘗試後進度依然緩 慢。直至兩年前，我為他請了一位教練，兒子的進步竟一日千里。究其原因， 是這位教練心思細膩，與兒子建立了亦師亦友的深厚默契，成功激發他的學 習興趣，讓他樂於練習，進而在課堂外也主動操練。這為我的教學帶來很大 啟發，如果大學教育也能建立良性互動，教學成效定能顯著提升。」
冼教授致力實踐體驗式學習，曾多次帶學生觀賞各類粵劇表演 從蒲台 島太平清醮的神功戲，到西九戲曲中心的小劇場粵劇及在嶺南藝術雙年節 的演出導賞等。他指出：「實地考察中的種種細節 無論是我們乘船時 暈船浪、整個蒲台島僅一個公廁、古洞村落的醬油香，還是看神功戲香火繚 繞的氣味、台下觀眾一邊吃零食一邊大聲聊天 都構成了獨特的感官體 驗。雖然這些經歷對學生的知識增長未必有即時成效，卻能豐富他們的人 生體悟和對文化底蘊的認知。」
粵劇研究獲研資局逾110萬撥款
除了教學，這位文化社會學者的研究也屢獲肯定。在最新一期研究資助局撥 款中，冼教授獲得逾110 萬港元的優配研究金（GRF），資助額為嶺大學者中 第二高。
冼教授指出：「我上一個 GRF的研究項目是探討中醫和香港粵劇的發展，而 本項目則是其延伸與深化 針對粵港兩地粵劇制度進行比較研究，旨在 分析社會制度、地緣政治及國際因素（例如：聯合國教科文組織），如何影 響文化的傳承和發展，並探討市民與不同持份者和政府如何對文化價值的 評判標準達成共識，進而決定哪些文化元素值得被保留或取捨，以及如何 推動傳統文化的『現代化』。」
Cansalted fish be a serious subject of research? Absolutely! "It may come as a surprise, but Hong Kong is actually a global hub and primary distributor of salted fish," explains Prof Victor Shin, Assistant Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, enthusiastically sharing the discoveries made by his students in their capstone projects. "On Hong Kong Island’s ‘Dried Seafood Street’, there is a vibrant trading scene reminiscent of Tokyo’s Tsukiji / Toyosu market, where (salted) fish is auctioned through bidding for international export." To bring their research to life, students even cooked salted fish rice at their project exhibition (Capstone Fair), inviting visitors to taste this unique piece of Hong Kong’s culinary heritage and maritime history.
Much like making salted fish, which takes experience and effort, these capstone projects entail a delicate integration of knowledge and experience. Prof Shin, who coordinates and supervises these projects, encourages students to dive into their specific passions. "What they achieved often runs deeper than we realise and surpasses our expectations," he notes. “We are not only their mentor but also a facilitator, providing students with the research framework while pushing them to explore and reflect through thought-provoking inquiries.” This approach fosters a mutually beneficial environment where both students and teachers collaborate in research, from salted fish to the artistry of dragon and lion dances and beyond - projects that Prof Shin praises for their creativity and innovative perspectives.
A lesson learnt from teaching his son tennis
Prof Shin’s pedagogy is rooted in the belief that a teacher should act as a catalyst for student interest, as he says, “teaching is not only about lecturing but more about facilitating a journey.” Drawing from a personal anecdote about his son’s tennis progress under a professional coach, he realised that fostering enjoyment is the key to mastery. "When my son was young, I tried to teach him tennis myself, but we struggled to make progress," he reflects. "Two years ago, I found him a coach. Now, his passion and skill have far surpassed what I could have taught him. The coach didn't just teach technique; she made him love the sport and practice on his own even outside of lessons." This insight has greatly improved his teaching.
To put this into practice, Prof Shin deliberately integrates experiential learning into his curriculum. By leading students on diverse field trips –such as the Da Jiu Festival on Po Toi Island, the avant-garde Cantonese opera at Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District, and an exclusive backstage tour at Lingnan Arts Biennale, he immerses students in the intersection of tradition and modernity, extending their learning beyond classroom. "Students may forget a lecture after exam, but they do remember the seasickness on the boat, the hunt for the only public restroom on Po Toi island, and the scent of incense at a deity play.” These experiences, Prof Shin explains, "create a rich sensory memory that informs students' broader worldview and enriches their academic knowledge.”

Research into Cantonese opera received a GRF of over HK$1.1 million
Prof Shin has received widespread recognition for his research as well as for his teaching. In the latest round of Research Grants Council funding, he was awarded over HK$1.1 million from the General Research Fund (GRF)the second-highest grant given to Lingnan scholars.
He notes "In my previous GRF research, I focused on the development of traditional Chinese medicine and Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. My current project builds on this foundation by comparing Cantonese opera in Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland.” It examines how social change, geopolitical factors, and institutions like UNESCO influence the way cultural history is developed and transformed. The project investigates how these factors influence the consensus between the public and the government regarding which specific elements of their culture are classified as legitimate and prioritised for institutional support. This research agenda reveals the divergent paths taken to ‘modernise’ traditional culture.

With his snorkelling mask on, Prof Alphonse Tsang Hin-fat, Research Assistant Professor in Lingnan University's Division of Science, immerses himself in the cool waters of Wong Lung Hang Stream. His mission? To collect both native and non-native fish to support his groundbreaking research funded by the Research Grants Council’s General Research Fund (GRF).
“While snorkelling, I often observe these fish coexisting, but we are still uncertain about how they interact,” he explains. By sampling fish from sites with and without invasive alien species, he aims to understand which native species are affected and how they compete for resources. This research is crucial for guiding future conservation resource allocation and informing management strategies of these invasive alien species.
During his underwater explorations, Prof Tsang encounters a vibrant array of species, including the native fish Predaceous Chub, known for its striking lateral black line that turns into a dot towards the caudal fin, and the non-native Jewelfish, adorned with metallic dots. He also captures gobies, recognised by the male’s distinctive white cheeks, and the unique Sucker-belly Loach. This species clings to rocky surfaces in fast-moving waters and is an indicator of clean, oxygen-rich water.
Equipped with fish traps and nets, Prof Tsang and his team gather a wealth of data. Back in the lab, he meticulously examines the gut contents of the collected fish and gathers chemical signals from their muscles. “This enables me to assess their niche overlap and quantify various interactions, such as competition for resources and potential predation,” he elaborates. His detailed research is vital for uncovering the ecological dynamics that shape fragile freshwater environments.

Recently awarded over HK$1.1 million in GRF funding, the young professor’s work probes the ecological impacts of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on freshwater biodiversity in Hong Kong. Tilapia is an invasive alien species that has spread throughout Hong Kong and was introduced in the mid-20th century for aquaculture. "You can find them in most of the lowland streams,” he notes, highlighting the challenges they pose to local fish populations. “By assessing their impact, this project can provide crucial data to inform policies and management strategies for freshwater biodiversity protection in Hong Kong.”
溫馨校園孕育卓越成就
「學業最優異獎」得主馬靖婉分享學習心得
對於社會學系畢業生馬靖婉而言，榮獲 2025年度「學業最優異獎」(President's Award) 的意義，遠不止 於對分數的追逐。儘管以3.87的總平均成績點(CGPA)冠絕同儕，靖婉在談及這份殊榮時，依然保持著難 得的謙遜。「榮獲這份榮譽讓我喜出望外，我衷心感謝我的朋友和家人，是他們給予了我莫大的支持。」
當她被問及用三個詞來形容大學生活時，靖婉生動地描繪了嶺大獨有 的校園氛圍：「舒適 (Cosy)、溫暖 (Warm) 和寧靜 (Peaceful)。」在她心 中，嶺大不僅是一座校園，更像是她的第二個家。她最珍視的，是那些 細微而溫馨的瞬間：與摯友一同上課並肩研習、隨時能與熟悉的教授 交流探討，這樣緊密的社群生活，讓她感受到濃濃的歸屬感。
靖婉分享道：「嶺大與其他大學不同，校園雖小，卻正因如此，拉近了 人與人之間的距離。在這裡你能與許多同學和教授建立深厚的情誼， 並真切地感受到這是香港的一個溫暖角落。」
課業之外，靖婉亦積極把握每一個嶺大提供的機會 從實習到交 換生計劃，再到雅思 (IELTS) 備考。這些經歷不僅有助她的碩士申請及 未來職涯發展，更是一段極具價值的成長歷程。
然而，如何在畢業生中脫穎而出，取得最高 CGPA？靖婉的秘訣在於 「自律」，尤其是對課程內容的掌握。成功沒甚麼捷徑，她語氣堅定地 建議：「你真的需要在每週上課前進行預習，或者至少在期末考前要 做到這一點。」
對於新時代的學習工具，靖婉抱持著持平的看法。雖然她認同人工智 能 (AI) 的輔助價值，但也提醒師弟妹切勿過度依賴。「AI 確實能協助 摘要重點，但如果你只依賴 AI，就會錯過那些對考試或期末論文至關 重要的細節。」
回首在嶺大的時光，靖婉給予在校生真摯的寄語：「希望大家盡情享 受校園生活 無論你在這裡讀兩年還是四年，大學時光轉瞬即逝。 務必把握每一個機會，無論是擔任研究助理還是參加交換生計劃，都 要全力以赴。」
如今，靖婉正攻讀碩士學位，帶著嶺大賦予的溫暖和堅毅，昂首迎向 新的學術挑戰。她深受李小龍的哲學「似水無形」啟發，並以此勉勵 大家：「每個人都應保持靈活應變的能力，這能幫助你度過每一個艱 難時刻。」
Forsociology graduate Ma Jingwan, the journey to receiving the 2025 President’s Award was never purely about the pursuit of grades, and while achieving the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.87 in the Class of 2025 is a formidable achievement, Jingwan remains refreshingly grounded about the accolade.
"I am truly surprised at winning the President’s Award," she says. "I really want to thank my friends and my family because they gave me a lot of support."
When asked to distil her university experience into just three words, Jingwan paints a vivid picture of the campus atmosphere: "Cosy, warm, and peaceful."
For Jingwan, Lingnan was more than just a campus—it became a second home. She cherished the simple moments most: attending lectures with close friends, having easy access to professors who knew her by name, and feeling part of a tight-knit community.
"Lingnan is different from other universities. The campus is smaller, but you get to know so many people and your professors—it truly feels like a warm corner of Hong Kong."
Beyond her coursework, Jingwan actively pursued opportunities—from internships and exchange programmes to IELTS preparation. The experience proved invaluable, strengthening her Master’s applications and future career prospects while fostering personal growth.
But how does one achieve the highest CGPA in the graduating class? Jingwan’s strategy is rooted in discipline, especially in mastering course materials. “You really need to do the pre-reading before every week’s courses—or at least before the finals," she advises.
Jingwan also shares a balanced perspective on study tools, and while she recognises the value of Artificial Intelligence (AI), she cautions against relying on it too heavily. “AI can help you summarise,” she notes, "but if you only use AI, you’ll miss details that could be crucial for exams or final papers."
Thinking about her time at Lingnan, Jingwan offers valuable advice to students: "Cherish your campus life—it goes more quickly than you realise. Whether you're here for two years or four, the time flies by. Don't hesitate to seize every opportunity that comes your way, from research assistant positions to exchange programmes."
Now pursuing her master’s degree, Jingwan carries the warmth of Lingnan with her as she bravely faces new academic challenges. Inspired by Bruce Lee's philosophy of "Be water", she encourages others, saying: "Everyone should be flexible—it helps navigate difficult moments."
