inter in Malta shows up with a cheeky chill in the air, bright blue skies overhead and just enough sunshine to remind you that you’re very much on a Mediterranean island. Yes, there’s the occasional rainy day, but it passes quickly, leaving everything fresher, greener and ready for exploring.

This is the month when Malta takes a breath. The pace slows, the crowds thin out and the islands feel wonderfully livedin rather than rushed. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing happening, quite the opposite. January is when arts and culture shine brightest, with exhibitions, film screenings and creative events filling calendars and cosy indoor spaces across Malta and Gozo.

One highlight not to miss is the annual Festa Ċitru, celebrating Malta’s citrus heritage in the usually closed courtyard of Sant’Anton Palace. Expect the scent of oranges and lemons in the air, stalls bursting with citrus products, traditional food, and artisanal crafts.

January also strips Malta back in the best possible way. With fewer crowds and calmer streets, every corner looks cameraready, from honey-coloured limestone glowing in the winter sun to bold wooden balconies adding splashes of colour.

Malta doesn’t try too hard in January; it simply looks good.

Jesmark, a Maltese fisherman, struggles to keep his livelihood afloat when a leak threatens his wooden luzzu boat. With dwindling fish stocks, a ruthless fishing industry, and a fragile ecosystem, he faces mounting pressure. Desperate to care for his wife and newborn son, whose growth requires medical attention, Jesmark becomes involved in illicit black-market fishing. JAN The annual Festa Ċitru celebrates Malta’s citrus heritage in the usually closed courtyard of Sant’Anton Palace.

I

n January, while much of Europe is cold and quiet, Malta offers a sunny retreat with a history and culture that stretch back thousands of years. The island’s small size belies its

rich heritage, visible in its ancient temples, fortified cities, and longstanding traditions.

The history of Malta is quite unique. The megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, which date to around 3600 BC, are among the oldest free-standing buildings in the world. The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In around 1000 BC, Malta came under the Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman empires, whose legacies include the Domvs Romana in Rabat.

However, it was not until the Knights of St John arrived in 1530 that Malta excelled. The architecture

of Valletta, the capital city they built in 1566, is evidence of the Knights' transformation of Malta into a fortified island. A living museum, Valletta is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its magnificent bastions, baroque architecture, and St John's Co-Cathedral, which is the location of Caravaggio's masterwork, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist."

Malta had a turbulent history of sieges and warfare due to its advantageous position, which made it a sought-after target. The most well-known of these was the Great Siege of 1565, during which the Maltese people and Knights valiantly defended the island against the Ottoman Empire. Malta's tenacity emerged in the twentieth century when it was awarded the George Cross for valorous action during World War II. Language-wise, the Maltese language, or "Malti", is as distinct as the island. Being the only Semitic language written in Latin, it reflects the complicated history of Arab, Italian, and British influences in Malta.

Siculo-Arabic, which was spoken by Arab colonists in the ninth century, gave rise to Maltese, although it also started to include French, Italian, and English vocabulary throughout time. It is now a stunning blend of several language traditions, accurately reflecting Malta's multiethnic past.

Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English, which you will hear merged in an interesting way when you walk around the streets. Although most Maltese speak both languages, Maltese is the language of the soul and is spoken at home, in village squares, and at the vibrant festas that take place all year long on the island.

Malta's culture is a dynamic blend of customs, holidays, and a strong appreciation for the arts. Every town and hamlet celebrate its patron saint with a street party, fireworks, and a riot of colour during the island's fabled festas.

Another essential component of Maltese culture is traditional music and dancing. Folk singing, known as "Għana", is still popular today. Artists engage in spontaneous, lyrical duelling that may be both serious and light-hearted. The Maltese have a profound innate love of storytelling, which is reflected in this culture.

Other cornerstones of Maltese culture include art and architecture. The island's opulent castles and baroque cathedrals bear witness to the impact of the Knights of St John, while Maltese modern artists are still making waves in the international art world.

With strong ties to its historical heritage, Malta has developed into a contemporary, multicultural country in the twenty-first century. Tourism, financial services, and the IT sector all play major roles in the island's multifaceted economy. In 2018, Valletta was named the European Capital of Culture, underscoring Malta's expanding stature as a centre of culture.

Malta is passionately proud of its traditions even today. In the various eateries on the island, traditional delicacies like "ftira" and "rabbit stew" coexist peacefully with foreign cuisines, showcasing the island's delectable fusion of old and modern culinary styles.

Popeye Villlage Originally built as a film set, this seaside village has leaned fully into its playful side. Candy-coloured wooden houses tumble down to the bay, backed by dramatic cliffs. In winter, it feels less theme park and more postcard-perfect, with space to wander and take it all in.

Waterfront, Valletta Here you’ll find a neat line of restored warehouses curving along the Grand Harbour, each one painted in warm pastels that shine in winter sun. Cafés spill onto the promenade, boats bob in the water. Head down mid-morning when the light hits the façades head on and the colours really sing.

Blue Lagoon, Comino Colour does not always mean buildings.

Here, it is all about water. Even in January, the lagoon shifts through shades of turquoise, teal and deep blue. It is quieter, clearer, and perfect for walking the shoreline or simply standing still and watching the light change.

Marsaxlokk This popular southern fishing village does colour the old-fashioned way. Luzzu boats painted in bold blues, yellows and reds crowd the harbour, each with its watchful eye painted on the bow. On quieter January days, the palette feels even more vivid against calm water and pale skies.

The Citadel, Gozo At first glance, it is all stone. Look closer and you will see layers of soft gold, chalky cream and weathered grey. As the sun moves, the Citadel changes colour entirely, especially in winter when the light is low and forgiving. The views over Gozo add their own greens and blues to the mix.

Għar Lapsi At Għar Lapsi, colour comes from contrast. Dark rock formations frame a natural swimming spot where the sea turns a deep, inky blue, especially dramatic in winter light. On a clear day, the meeting of rock, water and sky feels raw, powerful, and truly Maltese.
