Geographically, the district is relatively large and encompasses t he third largest city in the state of California. In total size it approximates one hundred and twenty square miles.

The terrain is quite varied and includes within its boundaries rolling hills, flat farmland , swampy tideland and a significant frontage on San Francisco Bay. The district is, at the same time, very young and very old. Washington Township dates to the Gold Rush era, but late in the l 950's the Township took on a new identity and now the two cities within the district are Fremont and Newark.

The projected population of the dist rict in 1970 is approximately 160,000 persons. Of that population 2,700 students are expected to graduate from high school in June of that year .

Philosophically the Board of Trustees has commited the new district to excellence in programs which: (1) emphasize the dignity and worth of the individual; (2) will provide content in analytical methodology by which to examine the disciplines which have occupied the minds of men; (3) to insure occupational competency for entry into appropriate vocattional fields; (4) to extend the ability to appreciate the creative arts; (5) to foster keener u nderstanding of political principles and development; and (6) to nurture ethical intuition for greater justice among men.

For the 1967 school year a faculty of twenty full time instructors had been appointed . The name Ohlone College was selected on June 28 in honor of the early inhabitants of the southeast Bay Area.

Final arrangements for the use of Serra Center for Girls at 650 Washington Blvd., Fremont, as a temporary campus site were made in July. At that time several sites for a permanent campus were under study and consideration by the Board of Trustees and San Francisco architects Skidmore, Owens and Merrill.

Date of opening for the f irst instructional year of the new college is marked at Sept. 25, 1967.

Instructional programs offered by the college encompass the occupational, general and transfer areas.

A specific example in the occupational area is Aviation Flight Line Service which is a one year certified program. Other occupational programs are Data Processing, Drafting, Electronics, Law Enforcement, Secretarial and others.

Two coures in the area of guidance available to students are College Study Techniques and Orientation to College. Both emphasize effective learning and successful scholarship.

All transfer courses available at Ohlone College are acceptable at the University of California, state colleges and private institutions. Transfer students may complete the state requirements in general education at the college as well as lower division work for most majors.

Education at the community level is an opportunity for adults who wish to continue academic pursuits or who want to develop skills or avocational interests.

Cultural and recreational activities will be available to the community at large in conjunct ion with the Co mmunity Services Program Series.

Submit a completed Application for Admission. It is necessary that you obtain a Social Security ~ before filing application; this card serves as your identification at the time of your counseling appointment. The nearest of £ice of the Social Security Administration is at 1089 B Street, Hayward. Application forms for a Social Security number are also available in the Admissions Office.

Arrange to have your official high school and college transcripts mailed directly from all schools attended to the Admissions Office.

Submit ACT Test Scores as soon as possible. Applications for the ACT are available in the Admissions Office at the College. Obtain a permit if your legal residenee is within a California junior college district other than Fremont-Newark Junior College District. This permit can be obtained from officials of the junior college district within which you legally reside. You must submit this permit to Ohlone College before. a counseling appointment will be scheduled. New Haven Unified School District is one of several "free" districts whose junior college students may attend this college without a permit. Your local high school is the best source of information concerning school district boundaries.

The counseling and preregistration period for the Fall Quarter 1967 will be August 10 through September 7. Should you be unable to keep the counseling appointment which has been mailed to you, please notify the~. college at least two working days prior to the appointment. FAILURE TO CANCEL MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING- APPOINTMENT. Preregistration will normally be completed on the same day you are counseled.

COSTS: Book costs generally range between $25 and $35 per quarter, depending upon load and major. The cost of the student activity card is $10 per year for Regular students and $2 per quarter for Special students. There is no tuition for Regular students who are legal residents of California. Tuition for students who are not legal residents of California is $7.33 per quarter unit or $110.00 for 15 or more units per quarter. The Fremont-Newark Junior College Board of Trustees has waived tuition for non-resident students enrolled in six or fewer units.

EVENING STUDENTS Welcome to your new community college. You need not apply in advance to attend evening classes. Although such application will be accepted, it does not afford a priority for the evening student. The enti~e registration process can be completed in the one evening assigned.

Transcripts from high school or other colleges attended are helpful if you seek counselor assistance, but are not required for evening students taking seven units or less.

TESTING An ACT score or proof of college course completion is required prior to enrollment in English and math courses and those other courses having English or math as a prerequisite. Test results provide useful information to be interpreted by a college counselor. An ACT Residual Test will be given on the following date for evening students only. Advance registration is not required.

Those courses requiring specialized equipment, such as life and physical science laboratories and business laboratories will be located at Kennedy.
