ASOC presents: ‘Monster Bash’ MARK EMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The Associated Students of Ohlone College (ASOC) continue their streak of strong on-campus events with their Halloween “Monster Bash”.

To celebrate on the day of Halloween, the ASOC hosted a “monster bash” from noon to 1p.m. By 11, personnel had already begun to enter the cafeteria for set-up.

Among the devices being brought in are speakers, a

microphone, a cotton candy machine, and a popcorn cart.

Along with the equipment were several pieces of scenery added to achieve a spook-tacular atmosphere.

The cafeteria walls were adorned with banners of skulls and gravestones. At the far end a stage was set up for the costume contest, and a backdrop for photos stood over by the doors to the pond.

Fliers passed out by the ASOC advertised a Hal-

loween costume contest, Halloween crafts, and free popcorn and cotton candy; and the ASOC did deliver.

Once the event began, several students in the cafeteria were carrying either a cone of cotton candy or a bag of popcorn, sometimes both.

Once the event began, the speakers started playing music, and contestants began to assemble for the costume contest. Costumes covered a broad variety of

characters from media from Princess Peach, Rick of Rick and Morty, and Beetlejuice.

Contestants lined up and were walked onstage for a brief presentation of their costume, and once all had been shown, the contestants looked on as the judges contemplated their top three.

The verdict is made and the three take the stage one at a time for a brief photo with the judges, followed by brief karaoke by a couple people.

Afterward, the event is tidied up and all is back to normal.

The event was co-sponsored by the Autism Awareness Club. ASOC continues to plan events for this semester, but for the time being, no November events are posted to their page on Ohlone’s website.

However, with no specific details, a Thanksgiving event is planned, according to the ASOC President Martin Kludjian.

Mental health may impact physical fitness YUMNA URFI OPINIONS EDITOR

Your mental conditioncan make you physically sick.

Maybe low immunity isn’t the reason why you get fever more than twice a year.

Or exposure to radiation not solely responsible for the growth of cancer cells in your body. An underlying reason for these conditions can be an unhealthy mental condition.

Mental health refers to how people think, feel and act as they face different situations.

Our mental health affects how we deal with stress, decision making and relationships. Most importantly, it influences the way individuals look at themselves, their lives and others in their lives.

Overwhelming stress levels can cause mutations at a genetic level which can lead to the improper formation of a gene, thus, affecting the functioning of a cell.

Abnormal functioning of an individual cell can further impact the working of other cells, eventually, affecting the entire genome mechanism. The result of which can be seen on a physical level, cancer being the example of an extreme phenotype.

Therefore, it is important to

realize that mental and physical health are inseparable.

Unfortunately, mental disorders account for a large proportion of the disease burden in young people in all societies. According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 1 out of 5 people are victims of mental illness. Studies conclude that most of these conditions begin during youth (12–24 years of age), although they are often first detected later in life (Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, London).

Late identification of such disorders stems from multiple reasons. The stigma revolving around mental treatments and illnesses. the shortage of mental health professionals and the fairly low capacity to provide quality mental health services, are a few key challenges to name.

However, statistics reveal that when proper facilities are provided and availed for treatment, there is a tremendous improvement in the conditions.

After psychological treatment, the number of medical visits decreased by 90 percent, laboratory costs decreased by 50 percent, and overall treatment cost

Moreover, anxiety conditions can lead to heart diseases, low immunity, ulcers, and colitis.

As college students, we fall under the vulnerable age group (12-24 years) prone to mental illness and thus, often find ourselves as victims of anxiety and depression.

Romance and suspense coming to Smith Center MARK EMMONS NEWS EDITOR

“The Illusion” opens in Ohlone College’s Smith Center on Friday, Nov. 3.

“The Illusion” is a play written by Tony Kushner, a Pultizer Prize-winner. The play revolves around the tale of a distraught father in 17th century France. Attempting to find his son, he consults a sorcerer, who enlightens him with visions, or illusions, of his son’s life. Through the visions, the audience experiences flavors of romance, drama and even comedy.

The performances will be located in the NUMMI Theater, inside the Smith Center. Though the theater is small, the show uses the NUMMI to great effect.

The audience is seated on the sides of the stage, while the show’s scenes take place at both ends, as well as the main floor, of the theater. In doing this, the show becomes immersive, as actors are quite often within arm’s reach of audience members seated near the floor or in the aisles.

As a story, “The Illusion” is a ride of romance and suspense, decorated with humor and enjoyable characters.

The NUMMI Theater, where the show is to be held, promises to be a fresh experience for theater-goers, as it is a small theater, allowing for immersion in the story as actors move near audience members.

Holiday Recipe Corner Dense-Pack Cookies

Ingredients: • • • • • • •

Two sticks of butter (half pound) One tablespoon cinnamon One tablespoon vanilla One egg Two tablespoons of milk Half cup brown sugar Half cup white sugar

Procedure:

Put your largest stainless steel bowl on your kitchen range’s largest burner, on the lowest heat setting.

Melt two sticks of butter in the bowl. Mix Take pan off burner. Add half a cup of brown sugar and half a cup of white sugar. Add some molasses or honey if you want. Mix until you reach the consistency of wet sand.

Add an egg and two tablespoons of milk.

Mix until smooth.

Add a cup of flour, and a teaspoon each of baking powder, baking soda and salt. Mix thoroughly.

Add a cup of Quaker

Oats (traditional), a cup of chocolate chips, a half cup of chopped walnuts and a half cup of shredded coconut.

Use a big wooden spoon.

Preheat oven to 305 degrees.

Use medium-sized ice cream scoop -- the kind that scrapes the scoop when you squeeze the handle. Place single-scoop-size gobs of cookie dough about two inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets -- about six to a sheet. Use a spatula to slightly flatten each gob of dough and shape it like a hockey puck.

Bake 21 minutes.

Swap upper and lower trays at 10 minutes.

Let cool for 10 minutes or so.

Michael Navarra, the director of the production, shared: “I’m excited for the public to see our students’ work in this wonderful play.”

“The Illusion” runs for two weeks. The shows will be on Nov. 4, 9, 11, 16, 17, 18; all performances begin at 8 p.m. The show will also have an ASL interpreter on Nov. 11. For Ohlone students, bring your student ID card and get $5 off your normally $15 ticket.

ART 117 delivers comic book display at Newark campus JEREMY MARTIN WEB EDITOR

Through the halls of Ohlone’s Newark campus, lies a glass case filled with several pieces of art, depicting the beauty and overall influence, brought on by several different styles of comic books.

Such display is known as the Ohlone College Comics Show and will be running at Ohlone’s Newark campus from Oct. 18 until Dec 4.

The gallery is located on the first floor, right next to the Cranium Café, currently serving as the library for the Newark campus.

“In early discussion, we talked about the topics of the show and and determined the place available to put the show,” said Rogelia Santiago, an Ohlone student currently enrolled in the Art 117 class.

The exhibit was organized by Santiago and her classmates from Art 117.

The class serves as an intro

to the display and operations techniques of displaying different types of visual art to a museum or gallery space.

This allows students to learn more about different techniques used in a gallery as well as the basics for artwork installation.

Students from the class will often take part in filed trips to museums and see what its like to work in a gallery or museum-like setting.

The comics show will depict pieces of art, inspired by works shown in various comic books, ranging from the traditional Marvellike comics, all the way to things like, movies, and even including characters from several video games.

Pieces of art include drawings, paintings, and even original graphics inspired by a certain franchise.

For example, one piece of art, created by Leon Mansalud, depicts the popular

Star Wars bounty hunter by the name of Boba Fett drinking Thai Tea, a drink filled with pulp which resembles a tapioca ball. This type of pulp is referred to as Boba, hence a play on words using the character’s name.

“After we came up with the idea of holding a comics show in Newark Campus, we made a list of everything that are needed for asking artworks from students,” said Santiago.

Artists can submit up to three pieces to be shown in the gallery. All three pieces of art must be the artist’s original creation and must be emailed to a special email address with the artist’s full name, the size of their piece, and the medium used.

Artists can submit various types of pieces consisting of zines, character sketches, books, strips, as well as individual and multiple panel pages.

Ohlone players intently focus in their last training session

Ohlone’s last basketball season had nothing to complain about as they reached the playoffs and lost against state’s no. 1 Yuba College, ending with a good 21-9 season . .

Still, for this season, the Renegades look to continue and improve their winning ways going into the 201718 season, adding new talent along with transfers.

The Renegades open up the season Nov. 9 in the Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament. A tournament dedicated to Jonathan Christian Wallace, a former Ohlone College Men’s Basketball player who passed away in 2004 as a member of the team.

One the transfers is guard Vinnie Safin from Simon Fraser University in Canada.

Safin feels excited about the upcoming season. “On a scale of 1-10 my excitement

Moreover, Safin admits to have a role of leadership after playing in higher divisions at Canada. “I just try to set examples in drills and be someone to turn to for answers to questions since I have been playing a little bit longer’, he said Among the experience

“I’m very excited to start the season, to say the least,” Thompson said. “I just want to have a better season than we had last year, and I think with the guys we have can really do that,” he said. “I try to lead by example, you know show them what to do, what not

to do and if I see something they are doing wrong I try to fix it,” he finished saying Also, perhaps not considered transfers but also reinforcing the team are players coming fromAustralia, bringing a different but interesting style of basketball to the Renegades, which will definitely be exciting to watch.

Full of excitement and new faces, the Renegades have their season opener Nov. 9 at Building 9.

Coach Heslin out until Spring semester MARIO LEAL EDITOR IN-CHIEF

For their last four games, the Ohlone women’s soccer team has been missing one of their fundamental pieces: their head coach.

Head Coach Larry Heslin is out on medical leave for the rest of this fall semester due to a colon injury. For the time being, men’s Head Coach David Marroquin and women’s Assistant Coach, Nate Failing are in charge of the team.

Heslin has been out since Oct. 19 when Ohlone faced Chabot at Hayward. Since then, the Renegades have been bouncing back and forth losing two games against Canada and Las Positas, and winning the same number against Chabot and De Anza.

However, with three games left in the season, the question remains, how is the

Director of Kinesiology and Athletics Chris Warden sees the absence of Heslin as a challenge. “I think these events can do a couple things, it’s a fork in the road. It could either bond them, or split them,” said Warden. “I hope

that Nate and David bond the team in order to do it for Larry,” he continued saying.

Considering the player perspective, Captain Sheila Naderpour, sees the team adjusting to the changes. “Since Larry left, the girls have definitely come together, and us, the captains, have

stepped up for the team,” said Naderpour.

Nevertheless, despite the union, Naderpour admits that in terms of results, the team hasn’t performed in our favor, but we’re working on it,” she said.

Moreover, Naderpour believes that the coach’s

absence is the right thing to happen. “Personally, I think it was a great decision for him,” she said. “He was feeling so much pain to the extent that it affected his decision making, and he was not enjoying it anymore,” Naderpour mentioned.

In the end, the results of the upcoming games will show whether Heslin absence brought progress or not. In the meantime, not everything is bad news, a new coaching style may bring new lessons.

“Larry and Nate have different coaching styles, while Larry sticks to one philosophy, Nate brings brand new ideas,” she said.

Currently ranked third on the North Coast Conference, the Renegades have the opportunity to finish the season honorably if they manage to win their last three games. .
