This year's staff members of the Magazine Production class, elected to combine the purposes of the former publications and to seek these goals : To publish a magazine that is interesting to all Ohlone College students; to graphically and editorially portray the highlights of student life; to present a wide variation of the thoughts and ideas of the students at Ohlone College, as expressed through short stories, poetry and art work.

In his lecture at Washington High School, Dr. Leakey attacked the science textbooks for their out-datedness and numerou~ inaccuracies surrounding the evolution of man.

This new fossil is a very important part of Leakey's jigsaw puzzle hecause it had the potential for speech - the lip structure differed from that of chimpanzees or gorillas. To prove his point, Leakey and his son Richard have ventured out at dawn in Kenya, looked for a concentration of vultures and found a lion eating a freshly killed antelope.

After the lion ate his fill and left, they moved in armed with branches and sticks.

In ten minutes, they were able to fend off the vultures and hyenas surrounding them.

During this short time, Dr. Leakey fashioned a sharp cutting tool, and skinned and dismembered parts of the antelope - all in 35 seconds.

"If we as dilettantes to prove a point could do it, then certainly early man to whom such food was a necessity must have done it."

Dr. Leakey is now firmly convinced that Charles Darwin was quite accurate in his theory that Africa was the area where man evolved because it has a larger number of primates than any other continent.

He and his family have been excavating and surveying the Olduvai Gorge there since 1931 and believe the site to be "the richest single source in the world" for uncovering archaelogical "puzzle" pieces.

Within the layers upon layers of stratified rocks at Olduvai, the Leakey family also has uncovered the remains of Homo erectus, Zinjanthropus man (the first maker of stone tools) , and Homo habilis.

He theorizes that three different creatures were evolving side-by side about two million years ago. "Zinjanthropus and Homo erectus both became extinct, while Ilomo habilis moved ahead toward man as we know him today."

Dr. Leakey appeared Feb. 22 at Washington High School Auditorium as +h.e second in the Ohlone Col lege Lecture Series. Over 700 were in attendance for his lecture where he used slides to graphically portray his facts and theories.

The psycho-sociological turning point in man's evolution started at the moment he could make fire at will, the archaeologist suggests.

Psycho-social evolution has made man what he is today through institutions such as religion and science, which distinguish him from other animals. "[ can't prove it yet," the eminent scientist says, "but I think this development allowed man the security f ram wild animals to free his mind for abstract thought."

He then points to the first markings left by man through paintings in caves about 30,000 years ago.

Dr. Leakey's work also suggests that man migrated from Africa to Europe and Asia, and finally came to the Americas. He traveled across the natural land bridge that existed 100,000 years ago and is now known as the Bering Strait, separating Alaska from Siberia.

Recently some remains-which Dr. Leakey feels certain are primitive tools, were uncovered in the Calico Hills in Death Valley.

"You will find in time that man came over here at least 100,000 years ago," he states.

This sharp-eyed anthropologist, Dr. Louis S. B. Leakey, was born in 1903 in a primitive hut near Kabete, Africa. His parents were the first missionaries to the Kikuyu tribe, and Leakey was the first white baby the tribe ever saw.

When he reached manhood, he was inducted into the tribe-the only white man ever to be 'SO honored.

He was named "Wa-ka¡rui-gui" (son of a, sparrow) by the tribe because of the keen eyesight he still has.

He received his college education at Cambridge, where he concentrated in modern languages, archaeology, anthropology, anatomy and zoology.

Leakey's advice to young people who wish to follow in his footsteps is simple and direct.

"You must be prepared to devote long years to work. You can't expect to walk around for a few years and retire to a house with a swimming pool."

Students should diversify their studies, he says.

"You must take courses in at least four fields-physical authropology, zoology, geology and cultural anthropology."

What about working in the field?

"It's a waste of time to think you are going to find anything wandering about haphazardly."

PALM BEACH - President Richard Nixon, in an early morning newscast from his vacation home, declared that Fremont will receive 100 percent support from the federal government in additional post earthquake funds.

Nixon said that because of its high moral standing as a community and its progress in the face of adversity, Fremont will he granted the full $200 billion requested.

The funds will be used for building of a detailed harbor complex around Elizabeth Bay and accelerating development of the Fremont's new master plan.

Becaus,e of the delightful 78 degree water on Nimitz Beach, a concentration of recreation facilities financed by the federal government was also approved by the President.

The leisure time center will he near the home site the President has purchased on Nimitz Beach. The warm water is the result of subteranean friction caused by San Fran路 cisco peninsula slipping deeper into the earth's core.

The President refused to comment on the recent sece&Sion of San Clemente Island from the United States by Dictator Sam Yorty.

Plans to turn the Sacramento Valley from flood land into farm land were also revealed by the chief executive.

The President concluded the newscast by saying the production of farm foods in California dropped 100 percent during the year of the earthquake 1969.

"They are doing a fine jo~ in Fremont," the President said. "! think it is our duty as Americans to find some dry land to grow something for them to eat."

FREMONT - Fremont city planners today announced dramatic plans for future development of this oceanside community.

A fleet of glass-bottom boats has been ordered from an Arizona firm. They will be based on the Idaho Pier section of the Fremont Marina.

The city recreation department has arranged for survivors of last year's record earthquake to staff the boats for sight-seeing tours past landma rks. indicating boundaries of the former city of San Francisco.

A city ordinance fo rbidding honking of boat horns wit~in 100 yards of city hall, located on the wmdward side of Elizabeth ~ay, was passed at last night's council meetmg.

SACRAMENTO - . Governor Ronald Reagan confirmed today that the board of trustees for the state colleges and Regents of the University of California have voted in favor of building a state college and a state university in the foothills above Fremont's Elizabeth Bay. Construction on both campuses will begin June l, after an elaborate ground breaking ceremony. All structures will be patterned after Fremont's historic city hall tha t withstood the worst earthquake in the history of man last year.

Reagan also announced memorials will be erected on the water over his two favorite institutions of higher learning, which were destroyed by the earthquake.

The San Francisco State Memorial will be dedicated to the 5,000 brave campus militants that died at their picket lines April 15, 1969. The permanent plaque on the memorial will read: "To the brave 5,000 who stood by their signs and refused evacuation by the Coast Guard in the face of the worst earthquake and tidal wave in history.

It does not matter that they thought the disaster warnings- idle. threats of acting President S. I. Hayakawa. What matters is their conviction to go down standing up for what they believed."

The memorial for the University of California at Berkeley is just as stirring. The

UC commemorative reads: "To the courageous defenders at Sather Gate, who overcame all odds to defeat the rescue squads sent to their aid. May it be known that they fought tooth and nail to defend 路 their sworn code of non-violence in protecting academic freedom at the university from all outside forces, even a11> earthquake and a tidal wave."

An application for building ocean front homes along Nimitz Beach also was approved. The former freeway became a beach last year when Calaveras and DeValle Dams h{.oke, sending. tons of water rushing down Niles Canyon mto the gravel pits area of Fremont.

This force of water, coupled with the re'_llnants of the bay tidal wave and the Orov11le Dam water, pushed tons of white sand and pea gravel along the old freeway path thus providing Fremont with the Wes; Coast's finest beach.

The beautiful hay that covers Hayward and mo~t of the old Niles District of Fremont, with 路an inlet into the old Lake Elizabeth has been named Elizabeth Bay. Besides a change in leadership, the "Ad Hoc" Committee on Minority Curricula has seen few changes in the 1968-69 school year. Elizabeth Cauhape, sociology instructor, organized the young committee earlier this year. Mrs. Cauhape designed a speaker's forum that brought speakers to Ohlone from colleges experienced in the area of minority curricula.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1968, was the date of formation of the "Ad Hoc" Committee.

The original committee consisted of President, Dr. Stephen Epler, Dean of Students, William E. Blum, counselor Frank Nakasako, and instructors George Frazer, David Nephew and Finis Wilson. Ron Hayes, founder of the Black Student Union was also a member.

Courses in Black Studies and MexicanAmerican relations were discussed in these earlier meetings. Feb. 13 and 27 were the dates of two other important meetings. The audience at the Feb. 13 meeting heard Al Reyes, Mexican-American counselor at San Jose City College. Reyes stated, "People in a minority group know the only way to

make it is through education. College fa. cilities are c;oming around to realizing the minority education problem."

Reyes described the "Special Education Program" at San Jose City as a tutorial program for minority students, developed by concerned faculty and students.

Sheldon Nagel, history instructor, recently formed a program called "Student To Assist You." The STAY Program is staffed by volunteer Ohlone students. Although it is not specifically for minority students, any student can obtain assistance from the group of student tutors.

In conjunction with the talk by Reyes, a student proposal was brought before the "Ad Hoc" group for consideration. The proposal was the group should sponsor an "Urban-Suburban" Conference, under the auspices of Ohlone College. The purpose of this conference would be to promote a more meaningful relationship between urban and

suburban elements involved in minority group activities on community college campuses in the bay area. Action on this proposal has been slow The new chairman of the committee, David Nephew, history instructor did not take over the reins of the "Ad Hoc" Committee with no prior notion of the committee's actions. Nephew was one of the charter members of the committee and along with Nagel traveled to several conferences on the subjects.

One major issue facing Nephew's committee is whether or not courses on minority subjects should be taught without the active presence of a racial minority. Despite the fact that Ohlone has a handful of minority students, including Blacks and MexicanAmericans, many of the students want minority courses taught to answer racial and social questions and to ease interracial tension with information and enlightenment.

Speakers at the event were Dr. Rudolph Lapp, College of San Mateo and Professor Felciano Rivera, San Jose State. Lapp spoke on "Teaching American History from the Black Perspective," while Rivera talked of "The Importance of Mexican-American Culture in American History."

A surprising note to many is that Black Studies have been a full-fledged academic discipline for several decades, according to Lapp. He went on to say that the value of a Black studies program is not diminished when the college involved has a limited Black enrollment. The value of a program of this type is that it informs the white community of factors that are valuable in race relations.

California's population of MexicanAmericans comprise 10 per cent of the state's total, Rivera stated. Of this population, thirty-three per cent are school dropouts, forty to sixty per cent are addicted to drugs in varying degrees, and the entire group suffers from a high unemployment rate. Thus the reasons for inclusion ¡ of Mexican-American or Latin "'studies are close to the same reason that Black studies are valuable to any or all community colleges.

The post conference recommendations of Nagel and Nephew were encouraging to proponents of minority courses.

"Because of a definitely discernable feeling of urgency on the part of the faculty and administration present, Mr. Nagel and Mr. Nephew both feel that the implementation of specific courses in the area of Black and Mexican-American studies are war-

ranted. In addition, it is felt that the hiring of instructors of both respective ethnic groups to handle these courses should be accomplished as soon as is feasible within the expansion plans of the college. Both Mr. Nagel and Mr. Nephew are willing to discuss their experience at the conference in greater detail with the administration."

The attitude of Nagel and Nephew is consistent with thought from institutions who are running successful programs in this field . The comments attributed to Board of Trustees member, Wes Sears and Dean of Instruction, Karl Karasek in saying (in a casual conversation) that at the recent board meeting there is no immediate need at Ohlone for such a program is a direct rejection of ideas cultivated during the 1968-69 school year by the "Ad Hoc" Committee.

The above list of educators and administrators have all encouraged, if not urged, the adoption of a plan of development for minority programs. Many colleges have been prompted to adopt programs because of racial disturbances. When I was eleven years old, I fell in love with a girl. I was in fifth grade, and seven other fifth-grade boys loved her too. Looking back I can't remember why I loved her, but I think a lot of it had to do with group pressure. The eight of us had a gang, and whatever one did, the other seven did too.

"Hey, let's go catch polliwogs!"

"Okay, let's go!"

And off we'd go, the eight of us looking for polliwogs. But that's another story.

This girl, her name was Susan Martin, was the lucky one we all loved. She had long brown hair, and for an eleven-year-old girl, she had a pretty nice figure.

Not that that meant much to us, but she wasn't fat like her best friends. (Why do all the pretty girls in the world have ugly friends?) We used to chase Susan around the playground during recess. That was how she knew we liked her. Her fat friend was easy to catch, but we would chase Susan around the tether-ball courts and through four-square games and not even get close to her. I don't know what we would have done if we had caught her, but we never did, so it didn't matter. We would probably have let her go. That was what happened every time we caught Susan's fat friend. We just didn't know what to do with girls when we caught them.

I used to go over to her house after school with the rest of the gang. I would stay until 5 :30-that was when I had to be home-and then I would rush home on my English racer, which I got for my birthday, and get home ten minutes late.

"Where have you been? You're ten minutes late!"

"I never knew what time it was."

(For my next birthday I got a wrist watch.) I never did tell my mother where I was. She always thought I was . over at Gene's or Paul's. I guess I was afraid she would tease me about having a girl-friend. Gee, I didn't even know what girls were for, except that if you liked one, you could kiss her and then marry her, in that order.

My best friend, Frankie, who lived next door, and I talked a lot about marrying Susan. Somehow it never occurred to us that only one of us could marry her, because we talked as if we were both going to marry her.

Frankie was not too bright, and I was his best friend because I helped him with his arithmetic homework. But it was all right because his mother made the best chocolate-chip cookies in the whole world. Except for Susan, of course. But Frankie liked to look ahead. One day he said, "Do you realize we're only eleven, and that before we're ready to get married, ten years will go by?" (He was good at addition.)

I thought about that for a second, and then we got into a deep discussion about what we were going to do before marrying Susan. He wanted to be a fireman and I wanted to be a doctor. But I remember that we came up with some Yery profound statements for eleven-year-old kids. Youth and old age share a lot of wisdom.

That was about the time we learned how to swear. Not that we knew what thf' words meant, that came in sixth grade, but we could really shock our substitutt' teachers. But Susan didn't want us to swear, so we watched what we said when shf' was around. Sometimes we would say something like "Oh, shit" and she would turn red, which was funny, but then she would pout, and we'd all feel bad .

One time, the eight of us went to see Elvis Presley in "Blue Hawaii" and when we came home, we all tried to comb our hair in waterfalls so that we could impress Susan. We used to go on the hill behind her house and slide down in cardboard boxes. Everyone of us wanted to hold hands with her, but that wouldn't he fair because she only had two hands and there were eight of us. So we would wrC'stlr .

One girl and eight boys. Sometimes her fat friend would be there, but then we played dodge-ball and she'd be "it."

Frankie and I used to talk about kissing her too, because that meant you really liked her. But that would really be unfair to the gang, because she only had one mouth and there were still eight of us. But not one of us had ever kissed a girl on the lips before, but we didn't really know how to go about it.

One day after we left Susan's house, Frankie said, "Hey, John, I kissed her!"

"Oh yeah? When?"

"Just today."

"I didn't see you."

"Yeah, when we were wrestling, I kissed her knee."

"Did she know?" "l¡ dorr' t th ink ¡scr."

Well, Frankie never did get to kiss Susan again. A new guy came to school, and Susan decided she didn't want to wrestle any more after he took her to the movies every Sunday with his family. We hung around her house for a while, but one time, in the summer, when she was having a Girl Scout meeting, hn mother came out and yelled at us. We left and never came back again.

That September, when school started again, Susan was at a different one, and the gang had broken up. Frankie and I were still good friends, hut that didn't last either. In October, Mitzi Sawyer movt>d in down the strt>t't, and I found out that girl-friends are not to ht> shared .

Behind The Mask

By TAHONA SANDLIN As the orchestra completes the overture, the lights in the theater dim. Suddenly, the crowd is hushed Their eyes focus upon the stage of the Ohlone College Theater. They wait for the curtains to open; they wait for the play to begin.

ate something new of yourself. Each person is a complex of many different persons.

For many live several lives: the everyday one, which changes hourly and the fantasy one, that we wish and dream and which changes with each new dream."

For the audience, the opening of those curtains signifies the beginning of the drama. For the actors and the costumers and the lighting and sound technicians and all the others who have produced what is about to he seen, the real drama began many days before opening night. What the audience is about to view, is the final form of a "cohesive whole," many separate elements put together to create one complete element.

Willis agrees with this philosophy, hut maintains that an actor " . . . never really attains his character, because like everybody else, the character is unpredictable."

He tries to find a particular characterization that he does best, in his case, comedy, and uses it in different plays. However, he stresses the importance of versatility, "An actor must he able to play many parts."

At Ohlone, ,the foundation for this "cohesive whole" begins as a student enrolls for Drama I, a basic class in acting. Here, a form is filled out, indicating the student's knowledge of drama, plays he has read, his exposure to productions and his enthusiasm for participation in the theater arts.

In preparing for a part, an actor draws from his inner resources. Jackson leaves this character preparation up to the individual student. "The student prepares for a part by drawing from his experience, the ones that are similar to the characters and reshaping them to fit the play. Once the actor has formulated these into a line of actions, he undergoes a new experience--the one the character is going through."

According to Willis Edens, an active participant in Ohlone's productions, The Little Hut, and this year's musical production, The Threepenny Opera, much emphasis is placed on sense memory and emotion in this class.

Visual creation of a character begins with make-up and costuming. Drama 14, introducing the student to the art of theater make-up. He learns to change the entire appearance of his face with grease, powders, and colored applications.

Many times, Prosthesis is used . It builds up areas of the face, such as the nose, or adds lines and wrinkles to change the entire appearance of the face. This technique is used extensively in the professional dramatic realm, specifically in the "Mission Impossible" television series.

Many women in the class are beauticians who wish to learn more about face shapes and hone structure, hut the emphasis is upon creating a new or renovated face to fit a play's visual characters. Costuming follows and helps complete the process.

"Costumes must have the feel of a production. They help the actor to form his creative statement," Jackson explained.

The actor must display the inner structure of the character as well as the exterior.

ter image. Fabrics are as important to the effects of costuming as the style and color of the garments.

A collection of costumes is kept in Ohlone's theatre for future use. Recently, 30 tuxedos were inexpensievly purchased and placed in the costume room, along with the others that are stored there, representing many characters as yet unexposed to the theatre audience.

Much of the impact a play and its characters will have on an audience is due to the lighting and sound production. Familities in Ohlone's new theater provide oppor路 tunity for use of the newest concept in lighting- sculptured light. This process makes the performer appear four-dimensional rather than three-dimensional. It is achieved by intensity, placement, source and shading of light. Students enrolled in this course learn to create atmosphere and mood with this and other techniques; also learn to create environment appropriate

for a play's action and to add their own action to a production."

Sound production deals with music and special sound effects. "The wrong sound will break the image it will shatter it. The right sound in the right place helps to intensify the emotional response of the audience," Jackson states.

"What he sees is only a small part of what he applauds or criticizes."

When a person purchases tickets to a dramatic production at Ohlone, he is investing in more than an evening's enter路 tainment. What he sees is only a small part of what he applauds or criticizes.

What he doesn't see- the time spent practicing the make-up and costuming decisions, the special lighting, sound arrange路 ments, in short, the entire creative process that has formed the play-actually insures its successful or unsuccessful acceptance by the audience.

This is the real drama- the drama behind the mask.

The bird was so graceful soaring around aimlessly in the sky. At times he was nothing more than a dark speck against the towering storm clouds which were building up over the mountains. Then, when he came lower to inspect his valley, it was possible to make out his shape.

His dark streamlined body slipped smoothly through the air. But it was his wings, his powerful wings, which gave the bird his majesty. Gracefully stretched out to their full span, they caught the thermal currents around the foothills and let him float for miles. And if the currents failed, an occasional easy pull of those wings enabled him to remain far above the scrub oak.

In great wide circles soared the monarch of the blue, serenely inspecting every corner, every foot of the green valley. And from his vantage point, he could see beyond the hills to the great bay with the crowded cities spilling into its waters. It was from there that the intruders came; silver streaks ripping through his domain; But they never stayed, and they created only a momentary disturbance as they made their way over the mountains. And the bird once more soared majestically around his valley.

Soon it would be night, but there was time for one more round. The bird soared higher and higher into his blue domain until he was once again but a dark speck moving across the towering clouds.

As she swung her legs from under the steering wheel around and through the door, Marcia was suddenly aware that her skirt had crept up about as far as possible.

A quick glance told her that the tall blond giant leaning against the Ford over there hadn't missed a bit of the action. She stood up and straightened her skirt, pretending his nonexistence. But the warmth of his gaze made her aware that he was appraising her up and down, fore and aft. Books in arm, she hurried off, remembering that she was going to be late for class again, but, after she had passed him, and faced him with her back, she turned about-face, looked him in the eye and threw him her best "I know what's happening, you bastard," look, then, as an after-thought, gave him a quick half-smile to show him no hard feelings, and hurried on.

In her English class, a way-out groovy guy read his story. It was an escapade in which he and some friends had taken off to Sonora for a campus-escape scene, and Marcia really felt that she was inside his head, until he started, in his recount, trying to make every female he came across.

Somehow this masculine attitude towards females bothered her, like, that a femme was a piece of meat, a toilet-to be appraised, graded, used. . • She sighed.

Even more frustrating was this beautiful comradeship that males seem to need and find with each other, and from which females are excluded, and of a type that femmes never feel for each other.

After class, she stood outside for some air and a cigarette. Several sweet young things had gathered and were gushing and giggling gaily, about boys, and clothes, and other related subjects.

"Yeah," Marcia thought. "That's where it is with girls. Boys . . . " She ground out the butt of her Pall Mall and went into her next class. As she sat down, she overheard the chattering of a group of the married women students.

"Uh-h," she thought. "Husbands, children and recipes is all that's in their heads . . ."

Marcia looked out the window at the blue sky, a couple of clouds that hung overhead looked like dirty snowbanks. She spied a lone cow in the distance, on one of the round green hills and thought, "Hey, cow-you've got your sisters, and you all revel in cowness. Cud is your thing, and the bull is a seldom necessary evil. And it's HIM that's the meat." ¡ She sighed, and envied not the cow, the girls, the women, or the men. But wondered, and felt-alone .

By EUZABETH CAUHAPE To write about the college on a spring afternoon suggests the old theme of renewal; one might speculate that after this hard winter, we do indeed long to see another blooming of the hopes with which Ohlone was established, and a dusting off of vows. But if one thinks back to last year's triumphantly born child, it is plain that we have on our hands now an enfant terrible, "the terrible twos," to rejoice in and struggle through.

They want to know where to go to find out "what's hap¡ pening" here. Where are the forums for discussions, where the after-hours confabs for hashing out ideas glimpsed in class, where do you meet boys (or really get to know the other girls), where is the setting for the leisurely unfolding of friendship, for taking each other on as informal competitors ? And where do faculty people take troubles, unwind, swap solutions, become

As with so many two-year olds, there are accomplishments to be remarked upon; the first is surely the townspeoples' reaction to the bond issue. But this event signals a number of things to me all at once, some of which make me uneasy. It was a resounding "Yes" the voters cried last June; but I never took it to mean we were being given "carte blanche," but saw it as a measure of the needs Fremont and Newark count on the college to fill . And while we have been given a commission, so to speak, to accomplish something the town defines as important, the needs remain incompletely defined and only partially articulated. The Trustees, too, continued to give us support and interest, also putting us on notice with respect to expectations.

Where do you get to know other students' instructors, or other instructors' students ? cr crle Although the nature of a community college implies a stru bb to overcome the effects of commuting, we have not done as well as one might wish to consolidate our gains.

Sociologically, the manner in which a group is structured determines if communication is facilitated or impeded, at both formal and informal levels; we know that "good" communication functions to cement a group and when you allow the individual a true participatory role, all this shows him he belongs.

The students deserve to have campus life organized toward wider and improved interaction .

Other noteworthy and less ambiguous developments were represented in the construction of an elegant theater and a Community Service program of considerable scope and attractivensss. And though the old Victorian building no longer broods sweetly over us, there are new labs, the lecture halls, and concerts at noontime. Class offerings are expanded, new faculty recruited, and the students are "settling it" to discover and take possession of their powers. But my optimism is laced with another growing concern.

In short, we advertise to be a community college, but still await the experience of a unity which we could invite the outer community to share. It is not merely the lack of a specific place that nags, I think, but more a failure to extend our oricrb inal feeling of enthusiasm for each other and the adventure begun under palm trees and pigeons.

But ah, a "place" will be a new factor before much longer.

The acquisition of the beautiful Huddleston land might well serve to reassure everyone who cares about Ohlone . . . If we were talking together now, and you muttered "power towers," I would come back with "olive trees," which should suffice unless you simply chose not to be pleased, for a time. For, from the olive-lined and canopied lane leading up to the heart-of-thecampus-to-be, to another lovely Victorian structure, to the quail, to the old brick winery, to the rise about the valley floor and view of white San Francisco, to the eucalypti, to the lake in the canyon . . . This is heart-lifting! It is ours, and surely a splendid gift for a promising two-year-old child.

Students, it is much remarked of late, keep asking hard questions; and a matter of considerable disappointment to me is one frequently expressed by them. While their prodding takes many forms, it almost seems a plaint in concert, about their search for a feeling of real community "communitas" if you like, at Ohlone. It certainly seems clear by now that we have responsive, inquiring, and involved students. They have givei:i meaning to our cold schedules, and brought us back, day after day, with high anticipation and often affection, to our mutual encounters. But they are asking, and rightly I fear, for far more to which to respond.

WHY DO OUR Lack Of Athletic

Dennis Chittle, sprinter, provides a winning effort, but the Ohlone track team members have the abi lity to win as individuals but a lack of depth keeps them from a team win.

It's common knowledge among people here at Ohlone, and to the college community, I'm sure, that we aren't what's generally known as a powerhouse in the sports field.

One can always say that the reason lies in the fact that we are a new school and haven't had time to establish ourselves yet, but this seems to be an often used excuse, and one that I find to he invalid. I can't see how the school's age could affect its athletic output as long as there exists enough talent in the form of athletes to make up a good team. (There is, by the way, an abundance of such talent at Ohlone.)

Perhaps then, since we already have the teams that are capable of winning the games, it is in our coaching staff that we lack something.

I feel that this argument doesn't really need a response because it is known and accepted that most of our coaches certainly have the ability and knowledge to land a winning team. They have proven this with

the coaching they've done before coming to Ohlone . . Where then, after all, does our problem lie? We have the ahility ... We have the coaches ... Support ... Now there, indeed, is a problem! If I ha ye ever seen a school that was less interested and less apathetic toward its athletic program than Ohlone, it would have to have been St. Mary's Catholic girls' school!

Most of the blame for this lack in support, however, must be put on the individuals who planned the college and campus rather than on students and fans. You can always expect a good turnout at home games, in your own gym, or on your own field. But how many people have enough interest to be willing to drive to Monterey to see a game?

If only the planners could have seen fit to provide us with a football field and a gym ... even a little one. But because they didn't, our teams suffer a lack of both moral and psychological support.

The moral support is obviously present or lacking deprnding on whether or not the crowd is there to support them.

The psychological support refers to the fact that an athletic team is usually at a disadvantage when playing in someone else's gym or on an unfamiliar field. This is true for two reasons: 1) the crowd is supporting the home team, and 2) the other team knows its court, or field, or track, and has had the experience of practicing there. Naturally, when a player realizes these things are working against him, it has a psychological effect. ¡ We are already working on a two-year losing streak, and, with this in mind, one might ask, "How does a player feel about playing on a team that just doesn't win? and why does he stick with it?"

We talked to Barry Ng of Ohlone's basketball team to find out what he had to say about the problem. Barry replied, "I don't

When asked what might be done in thP Frt>mont-Newark collt>ge community to improvt> things, Ng stated that "t!JP high school programs are lacking; not producing good players. Guys don't start playing ball in junior high. Intramural leagues might in junior high Intramural leagues might help. The program is beginning to develop and I think it's already improvng."

Barry told us, when speaking about specific problems with this year's basketball team, that "We needed teamwork; everyont' working togetht>r; sometimes we had it, sometimt>s we didn't. We need our own gym And we need a seven-foot center!"

The losing problem is a difficult one to fight. It's impossible to correct all the difficulties involved, but, ewn if we don't have a gym or a field we can at least givt> the teams moral support by just being there to let them know that it makes a difference whether they win or lose!

Don't Go Near the Pool, You' re Liable To Get Dusty!

Ry f)ON f,Al'PECAARIJ With spring comes the blossomin g flowers, green hills, and sunlit days. The Ohlone campus is able to capture and hold numt'fous sights of magnificent splendor which nature has bestowed upon hl'f. But amidst all this hPauty lies a forsaken area which is in striking contrast to the surroundings.

What once must have been a picturesque spot, has now hPcome the neglected offspring of both man and mother nature. The barricaded swimming pool and its enclosed area stands out like a mongoloid child gazing with blank eyes at the play and laughter of the outside world.

Like the apparently lonely world of this retarded child, whose mind lies dormant, the swimming pool also lies alone and aslePp. While the barbed wire with its rusty edges protects the pool from the outside world, it also isolates and strengthens the feeling of the pool 's uselessness. As the pool's heauty withers, weeds grow in abundance from thP cracks in the sun-baked tile. The red cement has been left open to the harsh elements and has become faded with age.

A swimming pool usually connotates a refreshing dip in cool, crystal clear water.

But if one were to dangle his feet into the emptiness of Ohlone's pool, the only frding conveyed would be that of standing in a hot barren desert.

1.e.: Then do you think we have an obligation in Viet Nam, to the Vietnamese people?

Ted: I think we have an obligation now, hut I think we should have thought it over a lot more than we did before we entered into it. We're facing the same thing all over again.

Don: The only obligation we have now is because of the otht>r guys who got killed. That's the only obligation I see, man. One guy gets killed and you go in ... I see revenge man.

You go over there and at first you go in with all this you know, save this, protect this, do all this crazy kind of shit, and you go over there, and you're in your own world man.

"Finally you kill somebody and it's nothin' man."

For the first month, you don 't know what's happening, you want to kill somebody. Finally you kill somebody and it's nothing, man.

You go shoot civilians. Well, like mu say, we haYe obligations to ciYilians; well. we wiped out a lot of ciYilians. You go through a village and zoom. wipe 'em out man. You get so pissed off at all these people man, you just can't believe it.

You don't have any obligation over there, to anybody but yourself and your platoon. Because in your platoon, those're your buddies right there and you know everybody and you're real tight. It's like a family and, when somebody gets hit, man, it just goes right into your mind.

When you go again, man, it's not for your mother. You 're going for yourself and your friends, man.

The first time I killed a "gook" was when one guy got scared and he got hit in the head and it blew out his head, his eye. It was the first time I saw a guy get killed, and afterwards the whole platoon got on a line and just swept through a village, man.

And I was on the top of this hill and there were these two men hoeing their weeds, man, and I flipped it off my safety and go d-d-d-d-dow, like this and bloop, I killed one.

Why? 'Cuz my buddy got killed, man. That's the only way. i.e.: When you got to Viet Nam, those of ynu who went, was it like you expected it to be?

Dave: You know when I got there, it was a lot better than I expected. I thought I would be, you know, just straight out in the jungle, but they had places for people to sleep, and they had bunk-beds at the replacement stations.

And then when I went where I was supposed to go-150 miles away from Saigon-well, that was a country club to me when I got there because I didn't expect anything. They had tents ewrywhere and they had everythng set up, you know, real neat. While you were in there, it was just like being home; hut once you went outside those fences, you were on your own.

Veterans Dave Berrios, Leon Lanfri, Gabe Ontiveros, Leonard Hernandez and Ted Lappegaard meet for a serious discussion.

To me it wasn't had, I really enjoyed it. The good and the had. i.e.: What was ynur last impression?

Dave: Well, when Pveryhody gets then' you know, all they think of is that they have 361 days to go. And that's all you do is put in your time. Cuz now if you haven't heen to Viet \'am ,

Dave: Just like us. Ev(-ryday tlwy ust'd to blow up our place. Evt'ryday we used to he patching up our tents.

Evt'ryday, yeah. We'd t'ither be digging a hok or patching up our tt'nts.

But that's just part of it. /)o ynu think the war really is like l.I'.: the news m('dia 11ortrays it?

"If you haven't been to Viet Nam, you ' re nobody." you're nobody, man. Everybody's bt>Pn tht>re now, so that's what the thing is, man. All . we had was tents and during the rainy season, it rains in the tents more than it does outside.

Dare: They don't get a chance to show it the way it really is. You know, like we had every magazine come out with a camera almost every day and th(¡y filmed us once, you .know, just likt¡ in Hollywood. So when they're there, ev('ryhody hams it up. You know, like if a chopper comes in with so many guys, you're the first guy charging out there to pull the

guy in. It's just like a movie stunt; but only it's happening for real.

They make things seem really bad, but that's because they can't go out there where things are really bad. They can't go out there and shoot it. So you just pretend.

What did you think of when you first saw someone killed?

Better him than me. That's what I thought.

Can't cry over everybody. You got a lot of friends there, you know. He got hit, he got killed, he lost a leg or something, well-a, sorry it happened, but I'm glad¡ it wasn't me.

And what did you feel when you had to kill one of the Viet Cong?

I was scared, but then I thought, the hell with it, man.

It didn't bother me to kill someone, but I tell you, I came pretty close to getting bothered. The guy was standing about ten feet away, and I looked at him and he must have been at the oldest, 16 years old. He had a face that looked like one of my brothers. And I saw him digging a foxhole and he looked at me and

He was so young, he could have passed for one of my younger brothers. And I just said to myself, I hope to hell one of my brothers never gets down here.

Leon: I don't believe we should be over there. I just can't see us fighting someone else's war. Defending our own country is all right or defending others in an all-out war; you

"You're not scared, because you're so scared."

Dave: You know what the reaction is with most everybody? You know when the first shot is fired. You freeze, but then you go on with the fire fight, but you're not scared, because you're so scared. After it's over and you're sitting there, then you get a chance to think about it, and you think it could have been me instead of so-and-so.

John: You know you can't see what you're shooting at half of the time. You just fire ahead of you, trying to be cool and everything. You do things you wouldn't even . .. afterwards you say, God, how could I do that?

know, one country wants to take over. But when you're just defending something that's been going on for 25 years, I just can't see it.

Why should we be fighting somebody's conflict, when they really don't care what happens to them, really. How can they keep fighting amongst themselves for 30 years? I mean, it's got to be that they're illiterate and they don't care.

Do you think that we're doing any good?

Leon: I think we have enough to do here.

John: Oh, yes, we do. I'd rather fight over there than over here. If Asia becomes Communist, then Australia could, Canada could, Latin America and Mexico could-soon everybody's Communist besides us.

Leon: You're not going to get an educated country like Canada to turn communist; they're not gettng any further across because there's a block there, there is.

John: Korea shot one of our planes out of the air! Why the hell didn't we do something about it?

DON and TED LAPPEGAARD, two brothers who sought different branches of the service, have similar viewpoints on the war in Viet Nam. we must have looked at each other for about two seconds. And that seemed like a lifetime.

You know what broke my trance was when he reached for his rifle.

So I pulled my gun up and fired 20 rounds into his body.

" . I hope to hell one of my brothers never gets down here."

As soon as I did that, I just turned around and started running.

You don't know, I mean, you just did it.

What do you think about the bombing, should we continue it?

Cabe: Oh, wait, bombing. Bombing should never stop. The only reason you stop the bombing is to help the other guys build up ther resources, help them kill American youth. That's it.

John: Christmas and New Year's they had a 48-hour truce. What do you think the "gooks" were doing?

You know what they're doing, they're Gabe : carrying all the ammunition supplies and everything else right across the DMZ, Ho Chi Mingh Trail, all the way down. They know they aren't going to get bombed, so they bring all the stuff across so they can fight against us.

John: And what do we do? We celebrate Christmas and New Year's!

John: Well, I don't think they should be able to get away with that.

• Dave Berrios is 23 years old . He entered the Navy at the age of 20, serving for two years . He went to Viet Nam, serving near the Gulf of Tonkin. He is majoring in Industrial Arts at Ohlone.

• Leon Lanfri enlisted in the Coast Guard when 18.

He served in Viet Nam for four years. Now 24. he is an accounting major at Ohlone.

• Don Lappegaard was in Viet Nam for a year as a Marine. He enlisted when 17 and now, three years latn, is a social science major at Ohlone.

• H. Ted Lappegaard, Don's brother, is 22 and a11 aeronautical engineering major here. He enlisted m the Army when 19 and was in Viet Nam two years.

• John Martinez, 23, enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Viet Nam . He is a physical ed major at Ohlone.

• Gabe Ontiveros was 19 when he was drafted into the Army. He served in Viet Nam two years and now is 2:) and a physical ed major.

Gabe: That's right, when you're Number

1, you have to take it easy with everyone else, no matter what they do.

Ted:

Hey, wait a minute. When you're Number 1, I think you should just be it.

Gabe: Hey, Ted, all right, you go around and you slap North Korea around a couple of times. Before you know it they got Red China and Russia behind them.

Gabe: Yes, we do. Do you know that for the first election there they had a better turnout of eligible voters than we John : So what has that got to do with it?

I THE CAN O:P BEER

I walked up to the refrigerator and opened the door. Inside ihe box it was cool and dimly lit; outside where I was, it was bot, brutally hot. In the back, on the top shelf, nestled between a container of chicken soup and cold blintzes was a can of Budweiser beer. Steadily 1 inserted viy arm and withdrew my prize. Wilh great affection I read the label " ... This is the famous Budweiser beer-we know of no brand produced by any other brewer which costs so much to brew and age-Our exclusive beechwood aging process produces ..." and how true it was. I placed the can on the counter and holding it with my left I positioned the can opener with my right. With a flick of the wrist, the pointed edge tore through the aluminum top. Instantly I felt the cool moist spray swirl about my sensitive nostrils while the foam swish\'d down the side. In a sweeping motion I raised the can to my lips in order that I might capture the precious escaping fluid. With one delicious gulp I sent the cold golden fluid rushing to my stomach which in turn acknowledged the arrival hy sending hack a glorious belch. Peace on earth.

THE C1GAHETTE

Ignoring the ridiculous warning on die label I withdrew a long slender cigarette from the red and white lVladboro l?ackage. Lovin9ly I placed the pu:re white filter hetween my lips. l reached deep into my pocket and felt around for my lighter. It was a silver Zippo which had beerf gi.ven to me by my best friend. I flipped open the top half and exposed the wick. I then flicked the little wheel with my thumb, producing a spark which jnstantly ignited the moist material of the wick. Slowly I moved the flame towards the tip of my cigarette. When it was in the proper position I inhaled steadily. The rich brown smoke sailed into my lungs, penetrating the deepC'st and darkest most secluded ,regions. For a few seconds I held my breath to make sure none of the delicious smoke escaped. Upon releasing the smoke from the boundary of my lungs it rose to the outer extremities of my mouth. As it passed throuf5h the opening, I deflected it up towai;ds my nose and inhaled once again.

Tl;ie remaining smoke forced its way back to my eager lungs. Good Health.

THE MOTORCYCLE
