hat a summer it has been! I’ve attended more weddings than I have ever been to in my entire life (including organising my Summer 2019 wedding), just as well that I love the cake, isn’t it? With this in mind, said pastries and other culinary delights have created what I’d rather affectionately deem as a ‘food baby’ or indeed a ‘muffin top’, hence why this issue provides an overview of wellbeing both mental and physical for fellow peers. Reading your feedback and/or instagram posts with fitness posts and fashion garnered from the inspiration of Ohlala Magazine always warms my heart as it shows that such content has motivated readers to begin such journeys, keep ’em coming!

BEYOND BEAUTY Malone Souliers by Roy Luwolt opens first boutique in Doha

U

napologetically feminine British footwear brand Malone Souliers by Roy Luwolt have opened their first stand-alone boutique in the globally renowned shopping experience, Villaggio Mall, Doha, Qatar.

The twenty-eight metre squared freestanding pavilion is inspired by the brand’s eclectic and iconic Showroom in Mayfair, London. The design concept was to create a visual medley on the eye through colour, texture, printed fabric and transparency.

The boutique is characterised by its irregular Rubik’s Cube structure within a crafted bronze frame. The exterior of the boutique features wall panels with a restrained deep blue interspersed with the occasional pink and colour contrasting entrances with deep orange coloured doors.

Internally the store walls have highlights of blue, orange and pink panels intermixed with an eclectic patchwork of prints from the Emanuel Ungaro archives reimagined in a vibrant and vivid colour palette to reflect Malone Souliers’ ongoing collaboration with the heritage brand. Contrasting colour flashes of vermilion, bougainvillea and yellow ochre are featured in bold print designs of maxi florals and camouflaged polka dots and vividly displayed within the walls.

Irregular shelves and framed metal boxes puncture the grid and create curated niches for engaging displays alongside a seating selection that is bold and curious in design.

W

hat are the perks of being global makeup artist for Fenty Beauty?

This is my dream job, I get to glam the most influential woman of our era, Rihanna! And I love that Fenty Beauty products have such attention to detail when it comes to ALL skin tones. I’ve found that each product really looks good on everyone.

What are you tips for heatproof and humidity proof beauty?

I would definitely recommend using Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer and Longwear Foundation! They were made to be humidity resistant and really help your makeup last without having to touch up so much throughout the day.

What is your idea of a perfect summer makeup?

To me, the perfect summer makeup is all about radiance and uses lots of colour I use the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters to create that effortless glow and the Summer Limited Edition Fairy Bomb Pom Pom is the perfect finishing touch to give your summer body a little shimmer.

How did you start out as a make-up artist?

I’ve always had a passion for makeup and creating beauty looks, and then decided to make it a career 14 years ago! My first job was working on set of a music video, doing makeup for Dawn Robinson from the group “En vogue.”

Who is your ultimate beauty icon and why?

Growing up in the late 90s, it was Gwen Stefani. Her chola thin eyebrows and classic Red Lip was my staple throughout high school! I still look back and think, wow she was so cool!

The cat-eye flick is still the bane of many women’s lives. What’s a simple way to get a flawless flick, everytime?

Drawing the flick while the eye is open. That’s the only way you can know what it really looks like. Also, it’s much easier if you draw it with pencil first and go over it with liquid liner after.

What’s one beauty rule was made to be broken?

One rule that was made to be broken is if you wear bright eyeshadow, you can’t wear bright lip – not true!

Finding the right foundation is a daunting task – what’s your advice for women when it comes to finding the right formula and the right shade?

You have to know your skin type in order to choose your perfect formula. If you’re oily, you want to use a matte finish foundation.

If you’re dry, you want to use a creamier finish or I recommend mixing the PRO FILT’R Long Wear Foundation with the primer or a moisturiser. If you’re combination, you can use both a matte and creamy foundation. To find your shade, you first identify your shade range – Light, Medium, Tan or Deep. Then you determine your skins undertone, which you can figure out by how you react to the sun. If your skin burns easily, you’re likely a cool undertone. If you tan easily, you’re likely a warm undertone.

If you burn first and then tan, you’re most likely neutral.

What’s your ultimate makeup trick?

When I apply Fenty Beauty Killawatt Highlighter on the face, I spray with a mist and then apply another round of highlighter, then another round of mist. It gives a super glowy effect without looking grey or cakey. @fentybeauty www.ohlala-magazine.com

a transforming feet treatment and as I walked through the perfectly manicured surroundings I’d truly found my respite in Doha - away from the usual hustle and bustle that I lust after on the daily. Margaret Dabbs London swiftly became that coveted best friend getaway when you’re in need of some much needed zen. I was offered a beverage on arrival and as I sank into the comfy chair a refreshing drink swiftly followed. My therapists Pilar and Joan were absolutely lovely in all senses of the word and they truly carry the word ‘professionalism’ to the core of their duties.

We’ve all been to salons where the therapists seem like their head is elsewhere and it affects the experience. Well not here, no siree! They talked me through the process whilst also making me feel effortlessly relaxed - smiles all around. I enjoyed a bespoke Margaret Dabbs Mani-Pedi where my lovely duo unleashed their specialist training to unveil the best looking tootsies and miracle workers that I’d seen in a long time which is no mean feat… and we do this for a living! It is important to add that the manicure and pedicure is not your average buff, file and polish with their perfectly curated products and we basqued in one of the first ever podiatric pedicures. We left with a heavy heart that we had to leave such a tranquil escapism, but, after a long tyrade of compliments from our peers we booked ourselves in for our next appointment and we admonish you to do the same!

THE WAY BACK

Our favourite Empowerment Coach ANAHI BROWN guides us to get our lives back-on-track after the recent Summer Holidays and our bloated stomachs are rejoicing on such favourable intel.

get it, we get into the holiday mode and it feels like as soon as the stamp hits the passport, our sense of normalcy evaporates, and we go from calm, controlled, poised and restrained individuals, to hedonistic creatures who, in an attempt to embrace life, solve everything with the magical: “I’ll start after the holidays.”

From budgeting and saving, to exercising and meal planning, during our summer holidays we tend to have a hiatus in adulting and revert to a carefree and, in many cases, highly self-indulgent version of ourselves, favouring ice creams to salads, and Netflix binge sessions to exercising. One way or another, we all have our own version of this and, sadly, they ultimately leave us feeling messy, confused and regretful… yet almost unable to change.

With the summer holidays coming to an end and the last trimester of the year starting, many of us are starting the typical rush to “make 2018 count” and, in the process tackle at least 20% of our long-forgotten New Year Resolutions.

This list is all about easy strategies to help you get your life, goals and ideas back on track, sustainably and joyfully: Plan your Comeback: You might be dreading the return (or you might even be excited for some routine), the key here is to plan your Going-Back-To-Normal strategy before you even land. Use the time you have on the flight home or even as you pack your bags wisely to plan, just make sure you have at least an overview of your strategies before needing to use them.

Ninja-Style Execution: Start your routines and commitments from day 1. Many wait a couple of weeks to settle before going back to their healthy habits, in my experience this is a slippery slope to procrastination and regret.

Basically, start life back as you want it to continue.

Anchor yourself in Gratitude: Instead of resenting the “off-track” decisions or the tedious everyday life, focus on the ventures and fun you enjoyed, reflect on those memories you made and the joy you felt, reminding yourself that you can only appreciate these because they contrast so much from your normal. It is in these differences that we get to experience true adventures.

Focus on the Why’s: In the end, there is a clear reason behind all the choices you make. We commit to exercising, eating healthily, sleeping better and beyond because we know and crave the paybacks of these in the long run. Instead of dragging your feet around, keep these benefits as your biggest inspiration and motivation. The truth is that what we enjoy on holidays is a product of our everyday decisions and commitments… even the boring ones!

Finally, remember that these changes in routines and ambiance are the perfect opportunity to incorporate new habits and practices, so if there is something you have been craving to change but haven’t had the commitment to, coming back home might just be the best time for it. @Wellnessbyanahi

I

start my day / My morning consists of…

I wake up early in the morning at 6:30 am and get ready, wake my kids up, dress them, have breakfast together and get them ready to go to school. My daughter is four years old now and is really into deciding what to wear for herself! After dropping them off at school I make my way to work with my husband (who also works for W hotel).

My role is..

W Doha is an extremely exciting place to work and I’m very passionate about the hotel and so is my team. It’s a very busy hotel and that is a testament to how hard we work. We never ever stop and we always like to be the first, ahead of the curve at all times. It takes a lot of time, brainstorming and planning.

My role as Director of Marketing is to come up with the strategy of the hotel and I attend a lot of meetings with clients and stakeholders. We are constantly striving to be the best. At W hotel I have the flexibility to try out new concepts and freedom of ideas as we like to constantly evolve.

A day in the life of Clara

I start work at 8am, all of the head of departments meet in the morning to discuss what will be the focus of the day. I would then meet with my team to plan the tasks to be completed and how are we going to carry out our objectives for the day.

When all of the meetings are over I start checking my emails and social media channels for the day, we then start content creating. We have a lot of visitors coming in daily and I would coordinate with them and by then its close to 1pm. I would call the W Cafe and ask them to feed me! I am extremely addicted to W Cafe I love the quinoa salad and the vietnamese roll and I eat my lunch in the office daily. I normally have my one-to-one meetings in the afternoon.

How I got into the hospitality industry...

Back home in Peru I was studying business management and I was inspired by my best friend to study hospitality in Switzerland for four years. I have experienced all of the departments within hospitality ranging from housekeeping, restaurants, banquets, reception, finance and HR under my belt. I ended up in marketing and PR by coincidence because the job I applied for (which I didn’t realise at first) was mostly focused on marketing and PR and that’s how I found my passion for it. I subsequently got promoted to PR manager after two years for two different locations. I was young and wanted to grow further so I felt as though I reached my limit with working in Spain and wanted to explore something new which led me to Doha.

I have lived in Doha since…

I have lived in Doha for 7 years now. I moved from the Canary Islands where I lived and worked in hospitality - It

was laid back and relaxed in the Canaries and I really didn’t know what to expect when I came to Doha. On my first day at work it took me five minutes to arrive at the driveway to the lobby because there was so much traffic to enter the hotel on a Thursday. When I entered it was noisy, loud and bustling with people. It was so vibrant and impressive and it instantly changed everything that I thought about Doha.

I experienced challenges with…

Personally one of the major challenges I have faced with living in Doha is the weather. It became worse to cope with the summer since having kids. For my work I found that sometimes resources could be difficult to get hold of in Doha.

If we want to introduce worldwide trends or something unusual, it may not be available in the country at that time.

My most memorable work moment was…

It was back in 2011 when we had the Doha International Film Festival (DIFF). We had to conduct interviews for SPG TV which is part of our loyalty program. We brought in a crew and we had a red carpet moment with celebrities including Antonio Banderas who we conducted an interview with. We actually had him talking about W Doha, his experience and visit to the country and it was being broadcasted in 1500 hotels around the world. That was one of the most exciting times for us. Even now, everytime we host a new personality or celebrity we are very proud, for example we had Jeremy Irons, Kate Moss, Kevin Spacey and Amitabh Bachan staying with us. More recently we had the Chainsmokers staying here and Luis Fonsi for the world cup experience, which was very exciting once again. In addition to this, every time we win an award, it’s a very memorable and proud experience for us, we really celebrate in that moment.

Here’s what I’m looking forward to this year…

Workwise I am looking forward to the renovation of the ‘living room’ area, the opening will be great and I’m looking forward to closing an amazing year for the W! Finger crossed for that!

Personally one thing that is so big for us as a family is that my son is going to start school this year. We bought him a backpack and we are taking it very seriously, getting him excited and helping him prepare for such a big change.

The end of my day...

On a normal day I would finish work at 7pm but I cannot say what time I would finish work daily due to the pace of my job. I then go home to my kids. If they have classes they would go to sleep at night but if they dont have classes they would be up until quite late and that is the quality time I get to spend with them. When it’s high season I stay at work until 11pm at times so by the time I go home they are fast asleep. LUXURY RESPITE

Just like many expatriates in Doha who have spent their entire summer in the country, we were truly in need of a break.

InterContinental Doha The City ticked all the boxes for Pooja Adams to well-andtruly get her ‘staycay’ on!

As a frequent visitor to their array of restaurants I was glad to

be back in their decorative lobby. I just love the tall glass ceiling and spiral staircase finished with glass chandeliers referencing opulent decorative luxury, yet still maintaining a relaxed friendly vibe with the mix of visitors and staff alike. I was thrilled when I checked in and was offered an upgrade to a ‘club executive suite’! I have heard that they have some of the largest suites in West Bay ranging from 42-70 square metres so you can imagine my delight as I took the lift to the 44th floor to checkout my home for the weekend. I was already pretty excited to be a guest for the first time but as I opened the door to the room, I was left astounded at the incredulous size of the suite, the welcome messages and of course the skyline of my beautiful city! To go the extra mile, the hotel manager had written a personalised welcome note in addition to fruits and chocolates in my room, how spoilt can one woman be? It was so easy to switch off and feel like I was actually on holiday from that point onwards. My room had everything that I needed including a huge bed and a luxurious bathtub looking out onto such an incredible view!

After settling in I wanted to explore the rooftop pool that I had heard so much about. I was in need of escaping the heat and humidity of Doha, and the rooftop pool (thankfully!) gave me just that. A chance to enjoy a view of the city’s skyline, whilst having a dip, but, with enough shade to protect you from the blazing sun. The pool was definitely my favourite experience of the staycation, and, after some leisurely sunbathing and taking a refreshing dip I had to stay longer and take advantage of the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room to make sure that I exhausted every last bit of pampering that one can allow.

It was getting close to sunset and it was time to get dressed for dinner, I love Japanese food and had worked up quite an appetite. Huang is the ideal dining experience, the decor and artwork is cultural yet fashionable. There were plenty of groups of diners there and I was eyeing up some of the colourful dishes on the other tables even before sitting down at my own. I was feeling inspired to try something new with seeing the vast selection that was available. Starting with their assorted maki accompanied by the delicious yet fiery wasabi prawns allowed the culinary journey to start 80

off perfectly. One of the knowledgeable waiters recommended that I try the Shabu Shabu, a Japanese hot pot dish comprising of thinly sliced meat and vegetables, cooked in a delicious broth. It was certainly a unique, interactive and attentive dinner experience which I highly recommend! The waitress cooked and served the Shabu Shabu at our table, as you watch the process your mouth will water at the delicious smells and ingredients in front of you allowing you to be completely immersed in the culinary art that runs through every dish. After a few rounds of the main I was so full that I hadn’t left any room for dessert! However, I would gladly come back to try out some more dishes in the future - as if I need an excuse.

After sleeping like an absolute queen, I woke up early to try out the breakfast at The Square. Having tried out their Iftar experience during Ramadan, I remembered that it was essential to turn up hungry because there is always a lot to try. I started my day with an ensemble of fresh fruit alongside a quench-busting cucumber and avocado juice! The Square offers a huge array of freshly baked prowess including pastries, fruits, cheeses, meats and cooked dishes all staring at me as I walked around. By having so much choice they are able to cater for an array of worldly dishes starting

Once my taste buds were awake I decided to try the Indian breakfast. To my delight they had some really great South Indian dishes which reminded me of my mum’s cooking.

I tried the idli, uttapam and sambhar which were spicy, homemade style and were utterly delicious! My second choice would have been to try the freshly made omelettes, but, alas I was full.

After such a huge breakfast I wanted to chill by the the pool again, for that much needed relaxation, thankfully I had organised a late checkout so I had allowed myself plenty of time. I once again enjoyed some lastminute rays as I sunbathed coupled with a few laps of the charming pool overlooking the skyline. I found that despite the premise being pretty busy on a Friday I managed to have the ladies Jacuzzi pool all to myself which has me feeling on top of the world with a view to match.

As I checked-out I began to feel a certain level of anguish that I was returning back to reality, but, with the knowledge that there is an option of day guest passes available for the pool area (and offers for ladies throughout the week) in tow I found myself already brainstorming the idea of getting the girls together to have some fun in the sun (or shade!) in the not-sodistant future...ah, utter bliss! www.ohlala-magazine.com

The provenance and history of the Shangri-La group is particularly apt when taking in the splendorous setting on your drive from the airport to the Resort.

The mythical place described by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon inspired Robert Kuok to name his ’new’ hotel after it. The vast rock formations, outcrops and chards which surround the resort are breathtaking and certainly have an element of the mythical, if not magical , about them. A great deal of thought and time has been taken when choosing a setting in which to create this resort.

My experience did not begin as I approached the resort but rather days earlier when I received my personalised itinerary. It not only whet my appetite for my stay but made me feel that my individual needs were being addressed and that each element was bespoke and thoughtfully arranged. The lobby area is an absolute triumph of both architecture and taste. It perfectly combines vastness and luxury and was reminiscent of the serene open spaces found within Grand Mosques all over area is an absolute triumph of the Middle East. Much of the ‘need to know’ architecture and taste.” information had already been dispensed through my itinerary prior to arrival so I was able to gaze , in awe, as I was shown around the resort discovering a succession of beautiful spaces, courtyards and vistas. Shangri La Al Husn is Oman’s only private , adult resort and has recently been refined in order to ensure that guests can indulge in all aspects of the finest of Omani hospitality. The views from the infinity pool and the private Mahhara Beach would rival those of Santorini at sunset. The sense of seclusion and tranquillity which the setting imparts is second to none.

The phrase ‘breakfast at your leisure’ illustrates the overriding philosophy of the Al Husn resort which is to induce a sense of relaxation and revitalisation. The Sultanah restaurant plays host to breakfast each morning. A riot of colour, flavour and choice greeted us. The vast platters and service stations afford guests the opportunity to eat as healthily or indulgently as their mood desires. The décor is inspired by the rock and water outside and is a fusion of colour and light which exudes freshness. Throughout my travels and gastronomic experiences I would struggle to place another resort’s ‘iftar’ above it. To coin a phrase I had certainly breakfasted like a king or rather Sultan - though I doubted that dinner would be that of a pauper!

TRAVEL Escapes magnificence. In addition to traditional Moroccan tagines, meat and seafood dishes the restaurant also presents diners with the finest Lebanese grills and Omani specialities. Most would consider taste to be the sense most used when sitting down to dinner however, scientists increasingly believe that sight is vastly more important and the setting in which food is enjoyed can itself actually enhance the flavour. Clearly those behind this restaurant concept had heard about this. Shahrazad’s intricate styling and menu choices will delight and satiate diners whilst exhibiting the flawless standards which permeate every area at the Shangri La. So many second days staying in beautiful hotels begin with first day breakfasts - but not here. Each day saw us embarking on a new route to ‘flavourtown’ with incredible dishes along the way. I could find no fault with preparation, quality, variety or service. Stunning. A fitting precursor for our Spa experience. Hareer (meaning silk in Arabic) is the first L’Occitane Spa in Oman and was designed to deliver a Mediterranean experience. The natural tones and shades of lavender are evocative of the colours of Provence where oil infusions were first sold in local markets in the late 1970s and the iconic brand L’Occitane was founded. The oils and treatments combine phyto-therapy and aromatherapy in a luxurious and authentic way. At the time we were the first couple to enjoy the Omani Honey Heaven Treatment together. L’Occitane worked with Hareer Spa to create a bespoke product which is built around the properties of Omani honey. The softening scrub smoothed and soothed the skin and prepared us for the deep relaxing massage with oils further infused with Omani honey. The treatment was a journey of wellbeing leading to a sense of contentment and pure relaxation.

The resort is also able to offer guests full use of neighbouring Shangri-La resorts where you may choose to dine or partake of water sports, additional spa facilities and a vast beach. Either way, it’s far from the ostentatious 5-star hotels where afternoon tea is a ceremonial activity, this place is all about fun, laughter, casual, friendly service and, of course, eating and drinking to your heart’s content. It’s a space that allows solo diners, groups of friends, and families to enjoy an ambience that is somewhat flawlessly unrefined and charming with bistro sophistication and laid back vibes all around.

Its creative afternoon teas is one of Balthazar’s pinnacles, and their new effort with Flowerbx, the online flower delivery service that has taken the UK fashion industry by storm, is nothing short of insta-worthy. The floral inspired afternoon tea is every food blogger’s dream and a match made in heaven between Balthazar’s Head Pastry Chef Régis Beauregard’s serious culinary skills and Flowerbx CEO Whitney Bromberg Hawkings’ floral expertise.

Let’s be honest – who doesn’t want to eat lush cakes and pastries that are both pretty and tasty? We’re sold!

To start, a selection of traditional, freshly prepared finger sandwiches are served, including cucumber, mint and homemade hummus; smoked salmon and lemon crème fraîche; and lobster prawn roll (which was the highlight of them all – DELISH). Buttermilk scones with Devonshire clotted cream and homemade strawberry preserve will have you so excited that you won’t know whether to do cream first then jam, or the other way around.

We’re partial to a big dollop of cream and an equally generous spread of jam – mouthwatering to say the least.

Alongside these, you’ll fine a tray of floral sweet treats to follow.

There was a pescatarian in our group, and we were happy to see that their dietary needs were met. We advise to book ahead and let the kitchen know of any food allergies or intolerances – the restaurant is more than accommodating.

Back to the good stuff. Diners can enjoy cakes in the shape of colourful seasonal blooms, in beautiful Flowerbx hues: Sky Blue Hydrangea, Violacious Tulips, Petal White Anemone, Sunburst Dahlia, and the newly introduced, deep red Balthazar Rose, specially created to celebrate this exciting collaboration.

Each Flowerbx inspired cake has been expertly paired with flavours to complement both the flower and the hue.

These include Apple and Blackberry Tulip, Coconut and Yuzu Hydrangea, Salted Caramel Anemone, Lemon and Blueberry Dahlia (our favourite) and the Balthazar Raspberry Rose. Of course, as expected, these treats are S.W.E.E.T and moreish and absolutely delightful. Tip: pace yourself and sip your tea with the cakes – it’s what a true Brit would do!

Talking of tea, you have the choice of a good variety of fragrant and traditional teas to savour alongside the main event. There’s Earl Grey, Darjeeling, English Breakfast, Chai, Assam, Jasmine, Sencha, Chamomile, Fresh Mint and Ginger. Something for both black tea and green tea fans.

On the other hand, if you’re thinking of something a little more cheeky for the afternoon tea, opt for the Flower Fizz cocktail, a delicious concoction of pink peppercorn gin, cocchi rose, pinky vodka and crushed violet petals, created by Balthazar’s Head Bartender and industry great, Brian Silva. A mocktail version is also available!

With a curated selection of cakes that represent the season’s most exquisite flowers, this collaboration is as beautiful as it is delicious and Balthazar has struck gold with another fabulous afternoon tea experience that visitors in London should definitely put on their to-do – or shall we say to-eat – list.

DOUBLETREE BY HILTON, Doha recently unleashed CLAW BBQ Doha onto the dining scene and we have fell hook, line and sinker in love.

izzling meats, live sporting events, arcade games and huge diner style booths greet you as you walk into Claw BBQ for an all around friendly American dining experience. As soon as I sat down I was distracted by the retro style arcade gaming machines. The bar is huge and I could instantly tell that it was the kind of place that took their mixology very seriously. My visit took me back to the days when I lived in New York where I tried hot buffalo wings for the first time and all star American burgers; extremely meaty, huge portions and packed with a lot of flavour. If you are looking for something to please the whole family which is fun and interactive from the venue to the menu then look no further than Claw.

For our appetisers we had the ‘Nacho Libre’ which is best described as a mountain of loaded nachos topped with ‘lone star beef chilli’, salsa, jalapenos, and the most delicious guacamole. I think I would have been pretty full from eating that dish alone, but, it’s a perfect sharer. My friend and I had the most delicious drinks to start with I had their piña colada which was sweet and fruity whereas my friend (with opposing taste buds) enjoyed the virgin mojito that was addictively sour from the bountiful dose of lime.

A bucket of the ‘Baja King Crab’ was served at our table and its grandeur certainly allowed it to be a feast for the eyes, accompanied by some seasoned corn on the cob and spicy french fries. It is truly a unique experience where you are provided with an apron, gloves and tools to crack open your own crab, providing an interactive yet entertaining dinner for your whole group to enjoy. It got pretty messy but it 92

CHIC Eats was totally worth it when we were able to indulge in the delicious crab meat. I also savoured more from their mixologist sampling their delicious Bacardi and passion fruit infused Zombie cocktail which came in an oh-so-instagrammable tiki style glass! We also filled our boots with the BBQ beef short ribs which were cooked so slowly, the meat was glazed in the sauce and came off the bone effortlessly. The garlic mashed potatoes which the ribs were served with was so moreish that I would definitely select it as my side dish the next time that I visit - I’m still pining after it. We were served the Claw speciality drink the XXrita which was served in a giant margarita glass with an upside down DOS slowly mixing itself into the margarita. This is a really fun cocktail to try out and I recommend it with a large group of friends.

By now we were feeling pretty full but we just had to try the desserts so of course we ordered two, but, when they arrived we were so shocked to see how big the portions were. In true American style we were served a deep filled American apple crumble with a huge dollop of vanilla ice cream, accompanied with an iron skillet baked giant chocolate chip cookie served in the pan with an additional three scoops of ice cream.

From the food and cocktails to the ambience, I can honestly say that we had a CLAWsome time!

Unfortunately we never had a chance to play on the arcade games on account of having too much fun on our table, but, we will do on our next visit. The retro games ramped up the nostalgic levels and the staff made sure that every sports fan was accommodated for with the latest sports being displayed on their multitude of TV screens around the bar.

The unique Claw experience is unparalleled in its concept and quality, proving itself as the idyllic reservation for all catch-ups including dining for larger groups or families. The all round inviting surroundings and games coupled with the bountiful amounts that satisfy your food cravings all at one sitting allows for the perfect dining experience.

MISS OHLALA SUGGESTS SOME IMPROVEMENTS THAT COULD BE MADE TO OUR SEASONAL BODY CLOCK AND WE’RE FEELING TOASTY. Am I smiling because I’m happy? Or am I happy because I’m smiling? In a psychological version of the chicken-or-egg game, researchers have long tried to understand the relationship between facial expressions and our emotions. It appears that the jury is out on this one as traffic seems to go both ways on this street - when we smile, our brains decide that means we must be happy, whether the smile is genuine or forced. It feels like I’m talking to my partner - I just cannot win.

People who frequently post selfies are often targets for accusations of narcissism and tastelessness. But what’s really going on here?

What is it about the self-portrait that’s so resonant as a form of communication? And why, psychologically, might someone feel so compelled to snap the perfect selfie that they’d risk their life, or the lives of others? This is at the very extreme dimension of taking a selfie amidst dangerous surroundings and/or activities, not the usual risk that I face of cracking the photographic lens when I fall privy to such a mundane act of vanity.

Some have argued that selfies can boost confidence by showing others how ‘awesome’ you are, and can preserve important memories. I’ll be honest and say that I have been guilty of posting to rival uploads of some of my friends. Who doesn’t want to see my beverage intake midweek on holiday? Mimosas anyone? SNAP! In this sense, the selfie is the perfect medium: it’s an easy way to offer proof of an exciting life, extraordinary talent and ability, unique experiences, personal beauty and attractiveness. Isn’t it?

I also find it important not only to ask why people post selfies, but also to ask why anyone bothers looking at them. We’ve all fallen guilty to berating that person who has uploaded ‘yet another selfie’ or found ourselves ‘nitpicking’ at a recent holiday 98

The approval that comes from “likes” and positive comments on social media is rewarding – particularly for the lonely, isolated or insecure and those most likely to post selfies appear to have lower self-esteem than those who don’t. In sum, selfies draw attention, which seems like a good thing but, so do car accidents when people are quite literally glued to their smartphones - the adonis to provide affirmation of popularity, albeit in a virtual reality.

So a picture may be worth a thousand words, but perhaps a thousand smiling selfies are worth even more to our mental health and overall happiness.

We’re all for celebrating individuality after all, aren’t we?
