f you read last month’s editor’s letter, you will have noted that I’ve been a little pressed of late. I vowed (and beseeched you all as well) to dial down the stress levels via the default calm that ensues during Ramadan. Lo and behold, that, I did. The intent is always perfectly placed year

upon year but never do I normally follow through. Now that the batteries are fully recharged, I am ready for more slow-paced days this summer. Best not to get used to it as come September, our fingers will be relentlessly tap dancing on the keyboards.

After a delayed drop, welcome to our July issue! The heart of the summer and the best of high and street fashion combined, getting you ready for a season of jet-set travel itineraries and wardrobes. Flick through our style and beauty pages and be inspired by our carefully crafted looks with expert tips and tricks on how to get that all-important summer glow. I have a particular penchant for Laura Mercier and love the step-by-step guide on mastering the it-look for sun-kissed days with the Joie de Vivre collection. You can find that on our beauty insight pages. Elsewhere in the issue we have words and strong visuals from both the creative director of Paule Ka and TUMI, two brands which epitomise the essence of summer with their fun, functional and unique collections, perfect for a powerful woman set to take on any part of the world with panache.

A Breath of FreshAir

Never has a brand garnered more intrigue than Paule Ka. The raw-edged and delicate cuts see a marriage of sophisticated style where the notion of grace is reworked to be punchy, unexpected and eye-popping. Visionary creative director, Alithia SpuriZampetti speaks to us of the confidence and contemporary attitude true to the Paule Ka woman and how Japan inspired the spring-summer 2017 collection.

hat inspired the SS17 collection? My main inspiration for the spring-summer 17 collection was Japan - its culture and aesthetic.

Who is the Paule Ka woman? The Paule Ka woman is a contemporary cosmopolitan girl with a busy agenda. Work, cocktails, weekend, travel and ceremony. The Paule Ka woman wants to be chic and comfortable in every occasion of her daily life, without giving up femininity and style. How technical vs. creative are you during the designing process? I would say I am more technical. I work in 3D, which means I draw the pieces. A mock up is made and my studio team work and rework on the mock up until the result I want is obtained. Once I am satisfied, we make the prototype that I can still work on. Choosing the fabric and how it will be worked is a very technical process. The Paule Ka presentations in Paris are typically very ethereal and production-like. Why is this important to you? With this kind of presentation, I want to give the opportunity to the audience to feel completely in the Paule Ka world and to take their time to discover and even touch the clothes. 34

Who in your career most influenced your trajectory and success? I worked for six years under Alber Elbaz’s direction at Lanvin before standing on my own feet. I learned a lot from Alber because he gave me the chance to be at his side and the opportunity to make mistakes. He has immensely influenced my way of working and I see him as my mentor. What’s your personal style for everyday wear? I like to feel comfortable at work so I often wear light trousers or long skirts with a simple top and ballerina pumps. Which country’s fashion are you most drawn to? Definitely France, I am a big fan of the fifties and sixties look. No country loves women’s clothes than France. What direction is Paule Ka heading to in the future? Next year (2018) will be a big year for us as it is the 30-year anniversary for the brand, so there will be lots of surprises and upcoming events. And who knows, maybe a show at Paris fashion week? On a general note, I will continue developing a new style vocabulary with new shapes and fabrics.

The Art of Travel We are as mobile as we’ve ever been. We can

get to any corner of the globe at warp speed. But, style considerations must be taken into account as well. Luxury luggage brand, TUMI has all the products you need for a smooth journey. Creative director Victor Sanz tells us how to master travel chic.

Can you describe your role as TUMI’s Creative Director? My role at TUMI has evolved over the years but it has consistently been the same. The design team is a small team that continues to develop solutions day in and day out and continues to fix issues and solve the ever-changing needs that arise with our customers. Tell us about your latest collection and why we should travel with TUMI in tow? For the AW17 season, we were inspired by the juxtaposition of New York; the city vs. country aesthetics. It’s here where we found inspiration between the differences in energy and the beauty in finding balance between the two. Who is the TUMI traveller? I think the customer who is carrying TUMI is either a current or future Global Citizen. They’re someone that is put together, they’re ambitious, and they’re someone who’s confident, that understands who they are and where they’re going. They appreciate not only the way something looks, but how well it’s made and how it works. What should any stylish, modern and fashion focused woman invest in? TUMI has always strived to understand its consumer and how they live their lives; whether it’s someone looking for a casual, yet beautiful travel piece or a multi-tasking CEO at a leading company who’s searching for a new bag for work. The more we are able to understand our customers, the more we are able to develop products that meet their needs and lifestyles. We’ve learned that our female customers have the same, if not more needs than our male customers—women want the same functionality that is offered in our male-driven collections, in a more understated and feminine silhouette; and we’re giving it to them. TUMI offers many collections for her to choose from such as our new Voyageur Leather and Mariella collections (to name a few!) that are fashionably versatile for each individual to use and style in their own personal ways. What can you say about fashion over function - especially with packed summer holidays where we need lots of space! TUMI is known for its strength, durability, quality, and function.  As we set out in developing any collection, we ensure that every detail and design element that goes into it will help support these principles—all the while remaining on trend for what we see are the needs within the market. The most important part of a good design is to truly understand the user and their needs. The more that we can do to make the journey pleasurable, we should do it. This involves all aspects of the design function, quality, durability, materials and aesthetics. TUMI is very utilitarian in appearance. Would you ever go off-piste and create a vibrant, print heavy collection? We offer a variety of colour and prints across many of our seasonal collections - specifically within our hard side luggage (V3, Tegra Lite Max, 19 Degree) as well as our soft side collection (Arrive, Alpha Bravo, Voyageur, and Larkin). The use of colour and print is typically juxtaposed with neutral tones that infuse excitement into the overall assortment and sets the overall mood for the collection. What’s your favourite piece of luggage to travel with for a long weekend? Over the course of my tenure at TUMI, I’ve accumulated bags and accessories that span all of our assortments. For me, it depends on the trip I am taking. If I’m doing a quick business trip, I may stick with my trusted 19 Degree Aluminum carry-on or you can usually find me with a new prototype in hand when I travel. 42

Where are your favourite places to travel to in the summer and in the winter? During the year I am always on the move - so for the summer and winter I really enjoy being at home with my family since that’s the time when my kids are off from school. In the summer, we’re outside a lot whether that’s at one of their soccer games or at the pool. When it’s colder we like to go snowboarding. I’m still waiting for my youngest to join us on the slopes and my daughter is trying to get me into ice skating! What are some essential, maybe unusual, things you have to pack on any trip? I have my go-to items/uniform when travelling. It makes the trip much more enjoyable and effortless. Keeping it simple and flexible makes the trip much easier. But the must haves that I never travel without are my iPhone, SketchBook, pens, sunglasses, sneakers, and some music. What are your goals with TUMI over the next few seasons? My overall goal as the brand’s Creative Director is to continue pushing the brand forward and creating inspirational products. I’m really looking forward to all of the innovation that we’re engaging in and continuing to push our premium collections and our women’s business forward. I think there’s tremendous opportunity for us to surprise our customers with new and exciting products that are both fashionable and functional.

How do you pack your suitcase? Do you have a particular method or art to it? There are definitely differences to how I pack depending on the length of the trip. I travel a lot, so I have a pretty set checklist when it comes to packing: Don’t wait until the last minute to pack as you will tend to forget something important. Keep your colour palette simple, make sure you can mix and match pieces easily. Know the weather where you are going, this can make a trip much more enjoyable when you arrive. Bring plenty of power for your electronics. Layout everything you think you will need and cut that in half. We have a tendency to over pack. Stay calm, there are many bumps in the road when we travel; try and enjoy the journey even when things go a bit sideways.

Designer Focus “They’re someone that is put together, they’re ambitious, and they’re someone who’s confident.”

Beauty Insight

summer glow We speak to Benjamin Ruiz, Director & Global Creative Artist from Laura Mercier to get the step-by-step tips on how to achieve the perfect summer look with their Joie de Vivre collection.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 62

Prep skin for makeup with Primer Radiance and massage onto face before applying foundation. Apply Candleglow Foundation in Butterscotch with a sponge. Press and roll sponge into skin to create a ‘second skin’ finish. For more coverage, apply more, only where you need it then apply Camouflage concealer. Use Translucent Loose Setting Powder and a puff to set foundation.  Add instant colour to cheeks and eyes with Windflush Powder. This particular shade of coral is a soft veil of peach that is very wearable and awakens the skin; it gives the perfect amount of warmth that our skin needs after coming out of winter. Many peach and coral tones have too much white pigment that inevitably restricts who can wear it. Windflush leans more to neutral so it captures more skin tones. It is the perfect product to wear when your skin is transitioning from spring to summer before jumping into a bronzer. Just sweep Windflush across the apples of the cheeks and pull back towards the ear and fade out. If you have dark circles under the eyes, bring the colour slightly higher and cut in with a circular motion, just under the eyes, this will help neutralise some of the darkness. Finish the look by applying a wash of Windflush across the eyelids then add depth to the crease with Matte Eye Colour in Truffle with a crease brush. Line the eyes at the root of the lashes with Black Ebony Cake liner and finish the look with Extra Lash Sculpting Mascara in Black Onyx.

On The Move

Angela Beitz explains the key points to keeping your skin hydrated and glowing for the perfect holiday arrival.

Apply SPF

It’s officially the summer holidays and if your bags aren’t already packed, now is the time to get sorted but first thing’s first. Luggage packing aside, the very act of flying depletes moisture from your skin and it’s super important to ensure you don’t arrive at your destination with dry skin, cracked lips, and an impending breakout. I’ve got you sorted to ensure you remain fresh-faced from one time zone to the next.

Use Products That Multi-Task

Apply Serum

Nothing ruins your hair light a long haul flight. Am I rights ladies? But a full-size aerosol spray bottle of your favourite formula won’t make it past security so instead, try a dry shampoo that comes in a powder formula to avoid the hassle of running out to buy the travel size. Just sprinkle a little bit at the roots and use your fingers to work it in.

Moisture is key so whether you prep your skin before you hit the airport or after the plane’s taken off, adding this one product into your skin care regimen will help your skin to stay hydrated. Using a serum under your moisturiser helps lock in extra moisture that you will need on a long-haul flight.

Thick Creams Are Your Friend

Apply a heavy moisturiser or even a night cream when you’re flying so that your skin soaks in as much moisture as it can and it will also help to create a sort of barrier. Then about 30 minutes before landing freshen up with a makeup wipe and apply a quick coat of makeup and you will arrive glowing. 66

SPF is super important, even on a flight, even though you are on the plane and not outside, you still need SPF on your skin as keeping your window blind open during daytime flights can cause skin damage, too. Apply a moisturiser with SPF pre-flight to protect your skin. Hand cream is a real saviour on a flight, lather it all over your hands and then use the excess on your neck. It also works as a great hair pick-me-up too for dry and static hair. Hydrating face mists are also a lifesaver to combat dehydrated skin mid-flight and this can work on your hands too not just your face.

Refresh With Dry Shampoo

Opt For Cream Make-up

Cream make-up products are more hydrating and are much easier to apply in your seat and take away the need for brushes. Pack a few key cream makeup products (concealer, blush and eye shadow) and everything can be easily applied using fingers or a Beautyblender from Sephora which saves space and makes it easy to reapply before landing. Swipe on a quick, fresh make-up look and you are good to go.

Intercontinental athenaeum athens

Out And About in Athens Centrally located within just a few kilometres to the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Temple of Apollo and Plaka, The Athenaeum InterContinental makes staying in Athens a breeze. Entering the hotel, we are greeted by the ‘Blue Man’ art sculpture - a large blue glass man lit from within, holding what could be described as a break dancing pose. Throughout the hotel you will find many interesting sculptures, as the hotel’s owners also own a large art collection where they display certain pieces, within the hotel throughout the year. After a swift check-in at reception we are led to our spacious room. Once settled in, we opened the blinds to see an amazing view of the Acropolis which stood proudly in the distance during the day, but was even more spectacular as darkness fell over the city and the monument sat glowing on top of the hill. In the morning, we ventured into the historical neighbourhood of Plaka, with its beautiful cobblestone streets, colourful houses and

premiere restaurant

“A spectacular way to end the day, soaking in the view of the setting sun across the city whilst gazing at the Acropolis.” selection of local restaurants. We spent the morning wandering around and then decided to head back to the hotel for a little R&R. Once back at the hotel we decided to cool off down by taking a swim in the 120-square meter pool surrounded by the terrace garden. After our swim, we visited i-Spa – Asian Spa, to unwind with one of their signature Asian style massages performed by highly qualified and experienced spa therapists who managed to release all the tightness and tension from the flight, followed by more unwinding in the beautifully designed steam rooms. Once we were feeling refreshed we ventured to the Acropolis, wandering through the ancient sites of the Parthenon, down to Dionysus Theatre, further on to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and finishing at The Arch of Hadrian. As the sun was setting we headed to the rooftop terrace on the 10th floor of the hotel, a spectacular way to end the day, soaking in the view of the setting sun across the city whilst gazing at the Acropolis. After a few cocktails; dinner was served inside the award-winning ‘Premiere’ restaurant. The gastronomic adventure began with a wax sealed envelope delivered to the table, inside were wafer thin pieces of lavash to be eaten with the first course. The meal was a visual delight created by Chef Michalis Nourloglou, each ingredient wearing a disguise, the fettuccini was actually squid, the bone marrow was really tender lamb fillet and the dessert was part of a plant. Each course was perfectly balanced with a combination of textures and rich flavours.

Travel Escapes Perched Atop Arriving from the high-speed ferry in Mykonos, we were greeted by our driver with a luxury SUV to transport us through the narrow winding roads to our private villa. Located 15 minutes out of the town centre our private 3-bedroom villa, one of the ‘Blue Villas’ extensive collections of luxury villas, situated on the hillside was the ultimate secluded paradise. The beautifully decorated living and dining room opened out onto a huge terrace with an uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean Sea. Downstairs the three bedrooms were equally spacious with beautiful traditionally designed bathrooms with a modern twist. Outside we had our own large private infinity pool surrounded by sun loungers and a huge outdoor entertaining area with an inbuilt table to seat 12, all with that incredible view of the sea. Once we had explored the villa we sat down with our private concierge Christie (the only Mykonos local to be a concierge on the island) who after getting to know our tastes explained what we might prefer on the island and referred us to the best beaches and restaurants. We ventured into Mykonos’ town centre and spent hours wandering the picturesque streets lined with the classic white houses adorned with coloured railings and beautiful flowers, stopping only to step into the quaint boutiques. For sunset, we visited little venice, luckily getting a seat by the water at one of the many restaurants to enjoy our delicious mixed drinks while the sky put on a show. The next morning our personal chefs visited our villa to prepare a traditional Greek breakfast for us, with plates full of tomatoes, fruit, olives, bread, eggs and an assortment of cheese all arranged for us to sit and enjoy that amazing view once again while relaxing in our own living room. The chefs explained that they can customise the menu to suit any taste and could also prepare lunch and dinner if we chose to stay in the villa for meals. On our final day in Mykonos we took one of Christie’s suggestions and headed to Scorpios, a beach club and restaurant built around a contemporary interpretation of the ancient Greek agora (market), incredibly designed with driftwood daybeds, wicker terraces and weathered stone walls all giving you the sense of being a world away from the chic white and blue colours of Mykonos. With delicious food and incredibly attentive staff Scorpios is a relaxed escape by day and vibrant social party spot at night.

The spectacular cliffs of Santorini greeted us as we pulled into the port aboard the high-speed ferry, a nerve wracking drive tightly winding up said cliffs while negotiating buses and cars was the start of our Santorini adventure. Once we reached the beautiful town of Oia (cue manic photo taking!) we easily found the entrance to our hotel: Hotel Santorini Secret Suites & Spa located on the main walkway. Luckily the staff were very helpful in carrying our luggage down all the stairs to our room as the hotel is situated on the picturesque cliffs covered in the classic white cave houses. Our room was spacious with modern decoration featuring touches of natural wood, a comfortable sitting area at one end and a large cosy bed at the other, divided by a tall wooden feature wall. The bathroom was exceptionally huge! The gigantic jacuzzi bathtub was big enough for four or more people. Stepping out of the room we found ourselves on our large private terrace with a spectacular view of the caldera, fitted with a private hot tub and sun loungers it was the perfect place to relax and watch the boats go by. We ventured down the stairs to the hotel’s infinity pool and bar, it was stunning! We spent the day relaxing on the day beds, drinking the most delicious cocktails and swimming in the warm water enjoying the uninterrupted view of the caldera. In the morning, we were welcomed by our made to order breakfast which we had filled out the night before and designated our delivery time - with so many incredible options on the menu we were overwhelmed! Each treat was tastier than the last. After feasting on fresh baked croissants, eggs benedict, local sausages, cucumber and tomato salad, fresh Greek yogurt, fruit and a bounty of Greek treats (the best loukoumades of our trip!) we decided it was time for some exploring! The hotel is perfectly located to walk around Oia and take in those picture-perfect views, we ventured over to Imerovigli and watched the sunset from Grace Hotel’s 363 champagne lounge. With chilled tunes and tasty canapes, washed down with Grace’s signature cocktail, the sun set front of us, turning every shade of red and pink. As our trip ended it was so hard to leave; it was made even tougher by the fact that the staff at Santorini Secret were so incredibly attentive, by the end of our three days we felt like old friends. In particular the hotel’s food and beverage manager, Manos, was there to help us with everything, he took time to explain the island to us, where to visit and where to avoid, arranged tours and restaurant bookings and even created custom cocktails for each of us.

TOP TIPS Take the High-Speed ferry between islands – or Lux it up and take a helicopter. Book hotel transfers or arrange a car rental for your arrival in Mykonos - There are NO taxis from the ports. Book restaurants in advance for sunset on the islands as the best seats run out quickly. Accommodations: for Mykonos: & for Santorini:

The Door To Luxury At Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, you get urban sophistication with beach chic in equal measure. Jo Brett checks in and explores every corner of the property.

Centrally located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Maqta area, the iconic Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, which is part of the AccorHotels Group, is a modern luxurious hotel that offers guests beautifully appointed comfortable rooms, first-rate cuisine choices and a prime spot from which to explore the capital. The striking angular designed building is iconic, a contemporary masterpiece inside and out, the lobby is reminiscent of an art gallery with artworks, funky furniture, statement cloud lighting, floral displays and a distinct scent that evokes memories of past visits. A show-stopping black marble and chrome staircase leads down to the restaurant concourse and provides access to an outdoor seating area and oversized water features, the glass lifts give you the first glimpse of the hotel’s stunning waterfront vista. A fervent supporter of local artists, the hotel hosts regular exhibitions, including the annual ‘No 74

White Walls’ show, and its corridors act as a permanent gallery for bespoke pieces. Each of the 369 elegant rooms and suites are decorated in neutral tones offset by patterned carpets and vibrant artwork. Alongside the king sized bed the spacious sea view rooms have a separate living space with a sofa, a desk and plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom is divided into three areas with double sinks, a large free-standing bathtub housed in a wet room with an overhead shower and separate toilet. The expanse of floor-to-ceiling windows affords guests superb panoramic views day and night across the hotel’s private beach and pools, the Khor Al Maqta channel, the three bridges that connect the area to the mainland and the incredible Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. MPW is a classy restaurant with chic interiors and a feature flame wall that wouldn’t look out of place in a ski lodge. The menu offers diners steaks and seafood paired with an extensive wine list, while it may initially not seem the best for vegetarians they offer the neighbouring Frankie’s menu with its specific dietary requirements sections. The restaurant has popular theme nights like the Great Steakout every Wednesday that’s designed for meat lovers with a big appetite. Those who like to test themselves can try the Tomahawk Challenge, 1kg of prime steak to be consumed in its entirety with numerous sides and a litre beverage of choice within thirty minutes, complete it and your meal is free. The Great Saturday Roast, a three-course gourmet journey started with a soup followed by the signature Salmon Experience, diners cook the thinly sliced fish at the table with hot salt and then garnish to taste. Unlimited cuts of roast lamb, beef and chicken are then served with all trimmings and sauces. After dinner aperitifs were expertly prepared at our table from the restaurant’s well stocked gin trolley, the extensive range of the juniper based beverages were mixed with various fruits and berries. I can confirm that on-trend gin craze is alive and well at MPW. Under the direction of Executive chef Gianluca, Frankie’s is back to its former glory with a renewed emphasis on fresh and seasonal Italian cuisine. All the classics like antipasti, pizza, pasta, lasagne, ravioli, tiramisu are featured on the menu alongside signature dishes, regular deliveries from Italy ensuring the authentic flavours. A wooden trolley laden with creamy buffalo mozzarella, seasonal colourful tomatoes and flavoured olive oils was wheeled to our table so my Caprese could be constructed by the chef, some may call this is a gimmick but I enjoyed the interactive experience. Guests can relax by the poolside or on the white sandy private beach, plenty of loungers and cabanas are available and for those more active there’s watersports and separate male and female gyms. Fairmont Bab Al Bahr meets the luxury traveller’s requirements for a memorable stay, whether you are looking for the ultimate destination to discover more of Abu Dhabi, relax beachside, enjoy the variety of fine dining cuisine or even catch the latest sports fixture. The property is large and impressive and will wow you from the moment you arrive. Upon arrival our bags were taken and we were shown to check-in. Our check-in process was swift and efficient and our bags had arrived in our room on the fourth floor before we did. One of the best things about this hotel is its beautiful rooms and their views and you’ll immediately feel like you are holiday. We stayed in a Fairmont Deluxe Room which was spacious and 80

beautifully designed with Arab-inspired architectural elements. We loved the large balcony with breath-taking views of the resort pools, beach and Dubai Marina skyline. The balcony was just perfect for a morning coffee or a late afternoon beverage. The rooms really are stunning and immaculately furnished. This gorgeous spa is European in style, with huge changing rooms and relaxation areas plus steam room, sauna, ice fountains and showers. We change into a robe and are shown to our treatment room which is a beautiful haven decorates in soft sand tones. We are having the Relaxation massage and our therapist is very skilled lulling us into a soft slumber which is always the sign of a great massage. The Scent of a woman

Hervé Gambs visited Fifty One East in May to talk about his luxurious perfumes and experiences as a creator. We catch up with him to discuss signature scents, olfactive material and the smells of his childhood.

Hello Hervé, welcome to Doha! How are you finding it? I travel a lot but I am always very happy to visit a new country and to discover its identity and culture. This is my first visit to Qatar and I love the warm hospitality I have received since my arrival. I feel very comfortable and welcomed in Doha. The city blends the sweetness of life with the richness of traditions. What brings you to Doha? I came to Doha to visit my clients and perfume lovers in Fifty One East who want to interact with me and listen to my experiences as a perfumer/designer. What are your signature scents? I believe the essence of beauty lies in the heart of nature. True luxury lies in knowing how to recognise it, so that you can transcend it and then articulate the difference. My perfumes have the exuberance to be unique because they are created from natural raw ingredients that are selected for their singularities, and slowly matured to produce intense, sophisticated and unconventional fragrances. You’re known for being not just a perfumer but a creator who instinctively uses olfactive material as an art. What does that mean ? Itisthisworkofnaturalrawingredients, atoncepreciseandinstinctive, alongwiththesearchfor asperityandtheconflictbetweentheroughandthesophisticatedthatdistinguishmyperfumes. Eminently intimate and carnal, these perfumes are the most faithful expressions of my personality, my passion for truth, my sense of detail and my taste for non-conformism. I create out-of-the-box perfumes whose refinement comes from the exceptional quality of their ingredients as well as from my uncompromising creativity and my personality. Tell us about your latest collection? My latest collection offers three black woody and sophisticated perfumes inspired by the animal, nature and woods that lurk in all of us, revealing a powerful sensuality. Why do you feel it will be right for the Qatar market? The encounter between my perfumes and the customers of 84

“My perfumes have the exuberance to be unique because they are created from natural raw ingredients.”

Qatar was very natural, because the Qataris are real lovers of perfume, and they like to feel the intensity of natural raw materials. I bring my personal touch of sophistication that differs from other perfumers. Moreover, my partnership to Qatar’s renowned luxurious department store Fifty One East will certainly elevate the brand to an upper level. What do you think of the traditional smells of The Middle East? Would you want to create a perfume that has a distinct Arabian touch? I love the intensity of the perfumes of the Middle East and I have added fragrances such as the Oud and Ambre to my collections which gave this special and unique scent to the perfumes. However, my visit to the region will definitely help me discover new ingredients and introduce new sensations. I am seriously thinking about creating a collection for the Middle East, but in a very different way.I think I’d like to link the East and the West by mixing ingredients from all continents. Finally, what are some of your favorite smells that evoke your childhood? Without any doubt, it’s the breakfast time, dominated by the smell of hot French bread coming out of the baker’s oven.

A Night To Remember

Qatar’s fashionistas and couture fans were given a sneak preview of an eye-catching new collection of designs by leading local fashion house, Stylek Design, last month.

Glamour and influence mixed elegantly and seamlessly as distinguished invited guests – including an Elite group

of ladies, prominent businesswomen, media representatives and social media influencers and bloggers - attended the launch of Stylek’s latest collection ‘Amber’ – a range influenced by the Arabian Gulf and North Africa with Moroccan touches and a twist of ancient Andalusian style by Mrs. Noora Al Hajri. The glamorous night of fashion, organised by leading events specialists Lilac Events, and sponsored by Chic & Posh Beauty Lounge, presented guests with the unique opportunity to browse the new Stylek collection while networking. They were also treated to a ‘Mix and Match’ style session with top personal stylist and fashion blogger Emna Hedi. The latest collection is an innovative mix of high-end fashion sophistication, and environmentally friendly materials as each piece is handmade with care using non-polyester fabrics including pure cutton, linen and pure silk and chiffon.  The evening was held at Stylek Design boutique in Al Gharrafa, which was a huge success for the Lilac Events Team. Lilac Events is an events specialist, spearheaded by serial entrepreneur Mrs Nora Al Hajri, with the capacity to organise and host gatherings to suit all occasions, from an intimate afternoon tea, to lavish weddings. “It filled me with great pride to see all the women here at the event enjoying themselves, getting the opportunity to be the first to see Stylek’s stunning new collection, while networking and sharing experience and fashion advice,” said Mrs Al Hajri. “The models looked great; it was seamless and the session with Emna was greatly received.”

Chic Eats

In a belly-expanding experience, Craig Ferriman takes to lordly portions at Santa Monica Breakfast Club.

’m often told how difficult it is to come up with the ever-evolving dining scene in Doha with new restaurants opening up all the time and existing ones rebranding under a different guise. The Santa Monica Breakfast Club falls into the latter category.  I remember dancing to R&B hits only a couple of years ago when the space used to be the A1 night club but it has morphed into a couple of things since and in its current manifestation, the Grand Hyatt proudly welcome you to their new all-day dining venue.  It is a large space decorated in Californian design with campervans and trailers painted on the walls along with other emblems of the golden state. From the moment you walk in, you know straight away it is the right side of casual. It is the perfect place to spend a chilled evening in the company of friends comforted in the knowledge that the food does the talking for itself.   The restaurant is laid out in a vast space with a quadrangle bar in the middle where the salads are prepared and breakfast items like eggs, pancakes, waffles and crepes get made.  At the back end of the restaurant behind glass, are the grills where the work of the burger making gets done.  And though they do everything well, their burgers are the thing you remember most.  They can really cook a good burger.  Some places bamboozle you with their never-ending options on the menu but here, quality trumps quantity. Their number one burger is called Prime Time featuring gruyere, roast onions, scallions, hash browns, one fried free-range egg and brioche.  Another burger they offer is the Black Angus Benedict which is similar to prime time but has cheddar instead with avocado and tarragon hollandaise with the poached free-range egg!  It is a dining venue as synonymous for its eggs as it is for its burgers. Their egg plates work as well for lunch or dinner as they do at breakfast time itself.  The crab deluxe is a total hit comprising saltwater crab, green asparagus, honey-roasted ham, sweet pepper chives and sriracha hollandaise on two poached eggs.  The other memorable dish is unsurprisingly the classic salmon which is again two poached eggs mounted by Smoked Scottish salmon, sauté baby spinach, crushed avocado, hollandaise, caper dressing and scallion hash brown.   Their milkshakes are out of this world.  My vanilla, almond and cinnamon milkshake had half a doughnut sat on top of it. Cookie Heaven is a dessert to only eat as a special treat as it comes as a very large chocolate chip cookie, vanilla ice cream and caramel toasted almonds.  If you’re up for a real calorific intake, there is the dessert that literally invites you to ‘Go For It’.  It’s like a giant chocolate sundae - vanilla ice cream, caramel and candied walnuts with hot fudge as you dig your spoon deeper into a long, tall glass. Decently priced, good service and a warm and friendly atmosphere with a strong menu where you can trust that every dish is of a high standard. Go for it!

Feel Fantastic

We are so pumped to look and feel great this summer. With The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa’s membership offers this month, you’ll find us increasing our stamina, achieving that healthy glow and getting pampered at the same time. What we love about

The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is its focus on wellbeing. Just by entering the lobby you go into Insta-relax mode. From the welcome drink to the airy atmosphere to the plush furniture, it’s not hard to leave your troubles at the door. Beyond the many wonderful offerings at the property, from its hearty food and beverage options to the stately and slick rooms, Heavenly Spa is its own entity of splendour. We’ve had the privilege (and very ‘hard’ task) of sampling and soaking up treatments which include traditional massages, steam rooms, Jacuzzis and the sauna, so we are well acquainted with the urban sanctuary that is Heavenly Spa. As for this July, you and we can look forward to some great membership deals that will kick start that beach-body endeavour – although size requirements aside, we just want to feel fantastic. The best part of the membership schemes is that you get your workout (with separate female and male gyms) and your pampering in equal measure – start off by killing it in the gym and then zone out in a relaxing and invigorating massage. When the summer weather dictates wearing clothing that’s barely there, you’d be smart to consider your skin as one of your most important ‘accessories’. Which means a quick shower isn’t going to cut it. The scorching heat is back and with it comes a necessary revamp of our skincare routine and your lifestyle. Because of the longer sunshine hours, heat, humidity and pollution, skin can become prone to blocked pores, acne, blackheads, redness and shine. Small daily routine reminders:

SPF – Literally acts like a skin umbrella and saves you from the hazardous effects and after effects of the unforgiving sun. Throw away last year’s unused sunscreen for a new bottle. Sunscreens aren’t meant to last forever. Exfoliate- The ground rule of basic skincare is to exfoliate your skin. Your body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. No matter how much lotion you use, you’re never going to have glowing skin if you don’t exfoliate. Grab a body scrub and hit the shower. Hydrate- At least 8 glasses of water are needed. Water not only helps you feel fresh, but it also prevents dehydration and will help wash out a lot of toxins. Also, find a summery lotion that you won’t forget to put on. It’s time to pack away your thick winter body butters for more light summery lotions.

The sun and all its ills can wreak havoc on our skin. Our columnist Pallavi Patil tells us which food and products are best to keep our skin healthy. 96

It’s no secret that your diet affects the skin. Eating the right food and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can make a huge impact on your skin’s appearance and boost the natural defenses. Yogurt makes for an all-time favorite snack. It is light, healthy, and great for your skin. The protein presence in yogurt keeps the skin firm and helps combat creases and fine lines. Including fresh seasonal fruits in your daily diet is a must. Say no to sugar-laden sports drinks, tetra-packed fruit beverages, and worst of all, the sugary, carbonated colas that are heavily advertised throughout the summer. Instead, go natural and opt for fresh coconut water to get your electrolyte and fluid intake. Veggies are a must- greens act like an AC to your body from within. Spinach packs such a wide variety of nutrients that you cannot leave it out of your daily diet. If you still need to be convinced, just make a note of this - Vitamin E, iron, chlorophyll, folate, magnesium, fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, plant protein, and several anti-oxidants, all of which are superb for your skin and come packed together in this skin-friendly green veggie. It may sound a bit odd but I have seen many guests come with a skin condition that is neither related to weather or diet but only stress. Happiness is a daily commitment that one can make at the start of the day. Keep remembering what you have, keep perspective and humour in your life. Relax, get plenty of sleep, eat right, and get ready to battle the sun. Pallavi Patil is the Manager at the Spa by Clarins at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha. Confessions Of A Shopaholic There is an art to sale shopping. I am a self-confessed bargain hunter who detests paying full price for anything unless it’s limited edition, bespoke or custom made. It has taken me years of practice and wardrobe gremlins to finally acknowledge that I am a good sale shopper. Mistakes include dresses that I could never fit my rib cage into notwithstanding any amount of dieting, quirky patterns that are not my cup of tea, clothes in colours that I don’t wear, clothes that don’t match anything else in my wardrobe and shoes that were always going to pinch my toes. However, my greatest mistake was my first London shopping trip in my teens where I purchased a micro white lace up dress and black faux fur coat in the sales on the Kings Road. I was really proud of my purchases as I jumped onto the London Underground, but knew I had made a fashion faux pas as soon as I got home and my godparents asked me to try on my purchases and I was too embarrassed to do so. I never wore that white dress, but at least my black coat did keep me warm whilst queueing to enter nightclubs as a student. To up your sale shopping game, here are my top tips: It might sound obvious, but preparation is key. Before you leave the house, take a look at your wardrobe to work out which items you actually need. Ideally you will have compiled a wish list over the year of designer items that you would like to purchase if they come on sale. I love dresses and hence have a wardrobe full of them, but there really is a limit to how many dresses you can wear. Be saavy and don’t impulse buy in the sales. Don’t waste time sale shopping in high street shops that you ordinarily shop in, like H&M or Zara, whose sales can often jumble sales and drive you to seek refuge in the nearest bar. Seek out designer bargains where you will get more for your money in shops where you can browse in peace on rails that are not too tightly packed. Try to buy pieces that won’t be out of fashion by the end of the season. Wardrobe staples like plain coloured cashmere jumpers, white shirts, wool 98

As the summer rears in full swing, Miss ohlala gives her best advice on how to find that bargain.

pencil skirts, stoals and statement jewellery are always a safe investment. Clutch bags in various hues that are rarely out of fashion are super useful for throwing together last minute party outfits. FOMO will often cause you to make bad decisions. If in doubt, leave the shop, go grab a coffee and sit and think about the item in question. Be sure to check out online sites such as the and netaporter. com from the comfort of your armchair. Sign up to newsletters from your favourite brands to get advance warning of their sales. Most importantly, don’t go sale shopping on a hungry stomach, when tired or after a bubbly brunch. In terms of my greatest sale successes, they would probably be an 80 percent off an Erikson Beamon necklace that I would never have been able to afford full price, a Matthew Williamson ra-ra skirt that makes me wanna dance all night long and an Alexander McQueen dress that was such a steal I had to ask the price three times. Happy shopping!
