Editor’s Letter Admit it: not everything about this most wonderful time of the year feels so wonderful. This has been a year that challenged us all in very different ways, and we’re still reeling, so the need for festive cheer has never been more dire. f you refuse to start your day without that double-shot-no-foam latte, you already know that coffee is the ultimate pick-me-up. But did you know your favourite morning beverage is much more than that?

Coffee has long been celebrated for its beauty-boosting abilities and often used as an all-natural alternative to your average body scrubs.

But before we get into the DIY recipe, let’s talk about how coffee scrubs benefit your skin.

From exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties to improved circulation, tightened skin, and the reduction of cellulite, coffee gives a smoother appearance overall. And did you know that coffee grounds even prevent ageing through UV rays as they have a protective effect on the skin? If you’re looking for a reason to upgrade your beauty routine, you’ve found one.

You need half a cup of organic ground coffee, half a cup of organic brown coconut sugar, half a cup of organic extra virgin coconut oil (melted), and one tablespoon of organic ground cinnamon. Put all the ingredients in a jar and combine – et voilà! And if you want to leave your coffee scrub in the shower, opt for a jar that is both airtight and waterproof.

For best results, use the coffee scrub every day for two weeks while you’re in the shower. Rub it on and scrub in circular motions, especially in the areas you want to work on, always scrubbing towards your heart. Leave it on for roughly five minutes before you rinse it off your body.

One way to spot a good massage is that it starts before you even set foot inside the treatment room. We never trust a massage therapist who doesn’t ask the crucial questions, and mine checks all the proverbial boxes as we check the boxes on her consultation form. Not only does she ask me about my health and family history, but also about my session goals and where I carry my stress. In other words, she sets herself some targets to meet and, spoiler alert, she does. After our brief consultation, I am taken into a private treatment room that immediately engulfs me in tranquillity and calmness. The dark-blue hues of the wall bounce off the serene white bed, whilst the sounds of

the ocean move waft in the air. The room is sprinkled with rose petals, making this experience even more luxurious.

The massage therapist gradually begins working her fingers on my skin, making sure to slowly increase her pressure to a point that is firm, but bearable for my body. The warm sandalwood oil seeps into my skin, deeply nourishing it until it’s soft and supple. As she makes her way up, I immediately feel my mind and muscles relax – my breathing deepens, my blood flows faster, and I can practically feel my stress floating away. There really is something intangible about the way the right pressure can release your inner toxins and rejuvenate your outer self. I allow my mind to wander off as the interior of the room and pressure on my body transports me to a place far away as soft, melodic music eases my mind.

The room also gives guests a complete sense of privacy, so the only thing you have to worry about is falling into a slumber on the table. The massage has me drifting into a euphoric state of relaxation post-session, slowing my movements as my body welcomes the rush of feel-good endorphins throughout. Curio Collection by Hilton hasn’t around very long – it opened on September 30 – but already has hosted several guests and expects many more soon. It’s less a hotel than it is serviced residential suites with one, two, and three bedrooms. They’re ideal for medium- to long-stay guests working in Qatar and also a great alternative to the stuffy hotel, where everything is done for you when all you really want is some independence and self-catering facilities.

Intelligent, modern design is something that hits you from the moment you arrive. The 52-floor tower has a mostly glass exterior, which means that no matter the suite you’re in, there’s no shortage of light beaming through. The washroom was the only place without windows, thankfully, so the rooms are bright and light. Blackout curtains can be drawn if you want. This is a feature I was glad to see, so that I could enjoy a lie-in, but see some spectacular views of West Bay as soon as I pulled them back – and this is the case no matter what side of the building you stay on. From our window, we had a direct line view of the flight path into the old airport and could see the Museum of Islamic Art in all its majestic glory. The corniche was visible down below, and I could make out Banana Island on the far horizon. The soundproofing is worthy of note because, despite all the city action down below, I couldn’t hear any of it.

As for the design? Very smart. The rooms are very spacious, and the high ceilings and long uncluttered living room and open-plan kitchen in the one- and two-bedroom suites accentuate the mass of living space available. It’s rather social, too. There is a long dining table for six, where I was also able to get a lot of work done. There was a kitchen at the far end with a breakfast bar, full length fridge-freezer, microwave, cooker

with four hobs, and ample storage space, with all cutlery and crockery provided. Also noteworthy is the plain white design, with just a few tasteful and modern art pieces dotted throughout. The space then acts as a blank canvas in order to allow incoming residents to personalise it with their own furniture or personal belongings. Within reason, the very flexible staff can remove certain items if guests want to bring in their own things.

So let’s talk hospitality, which I must say is very warm and welcoming. Breakfast takes place every morning at Mondo restaurant and serves a well-crafted menu of egg-based options as well as half a dozen healthy choices like granola and fruit. I was hugely impressed by the offering – wholesome choices are plentiful, in fact. Mondo’s café, meanwhile, is tucked to the left inside the lobby and also has outdoor seating. Here await delicious salads as well as other standard fare. I particularly enjoyed its curried tuna salad alongside a smoothie.

The top floor houses the health club. The gym faces west, and I went at possibly the best time for a workout – sunset! While burning calories on the treadmill, I quite literally took in the breath-taking view of the city centre from a towering height and watched the sun set in the distance. It was a magical sight to behold, sweat and all. On the other side of the top floor, facing east, is the indoor pool. There are great views there, too, plus the water is warm so you can swim fast lengths or just dip your legs in and read a book while unwinding from life’s stresses. We’re told that a hammam is on the way very soon – something to look forward to!

I was especially impressed by the design structure of the three-bedroom suites that allow families to separate off the children with two entry doors allowing privacy and space. Everything has been thoroughly considered. A ‘pantry’ concept is being introduced for the busy modern worker. If you’re running late from work and plan on entertaining guests, you can call ahead and Aleph staff will ensure that some food is taken up to your room, left gently heating, and the table is set ready for guests to arrive two minutes after you do. As innovative ideas go, that really takes some beating!

Proximity to City Center Doha and the DECC metro stop are all within walking distance of the property, but the metro express service can be hailed via an app to get you there even faster. This means that residents are easily connected to the city centre and all its amenities as well as the links to get all over Qatar in no time. Haute & Happening Deep inside a luxe retail destination in Doha awaits an array of palate pleasers, as Ohlala’s Craig Ferriman recently discovered.

M

y recent visit to Wahaj ensconced inside Galeries Lafayette Doha was quite a revelation – this is a high-end outlet for serious shopping. Tourists who make regular trips to Paris will likely know Galeries Lafayette as a department store, and its presence has only enhanced Katara. I was on a tight schedule, so there wasn’t much time to peruse the collections or do much browsing, but I did notice a glass entrance to what looked like a seemingly modest café at the far end of the store behind the escalators.

To the side of the open-plan kitchen was a door, and our greeter escorted us past it to a truly stunning terrace, seating us under a tent-like structure with glass walls. Before long, our waitress Flora came over to introduce herself. A latent snobbery of mine made me think that, because this place was in a mall, the service might be a bit sub-par. But Flora proved me wrong. If she was the benchmark, then the standard is set very high because not only were we treated like valued customers, but she also made informed recommendations based on a comprehensive understanding of the menu.

I must say the menu was rather long, so choosing what to eat wasn’t easy. Wahaj exudes Mediterranean vibes, but it offers plenty of choice – no matter what your dietary preferences, there is bound to be something that appeals to your tastebuds. It’s rare that I comment on drinks because I so often think that they’re either overpriced and not thought through enough, or both. The signature Mediterranean Magic mocktail was served in a tumbler and looked like it had a small garden in it, complete with smashed mixed berries and mint topped with sparkling water. It was bursting in flavour and lasted the entirety of the meal. There was real value there.

We tried a couple of hot and cold starter options. The inhouse hummus comes with crispy bread that admittedly wasn’t my favourite, but the avocado and white bean hummus felt very different to the usual proposition. The menu is rife with Asian-inspired options, too. The black 72

cod tempura, for example, was amply portioned with lots of pieces of battered fish accompanied by a miso tartar.

Meanwhile, the tiger prawns served with spiced tomato, tamarind, and saffron mayo got everyone talking when I posted a photo of it on my Instagram account.

Speaking of which, I consistently got the feeling that this is a place to be seen. It felt rather trendy without being achingly so. Sushi is on the menu, so I checked out the prawn tempura maki and it was very well-presented. There are also quite a few main courses to choose from, but considering my carnivorous mood that day, I tried the inhouse burger. Its unique feature was the active carbon bun, so it was entirely black. And totally Instagrammable. The meat was well-sourced and cooked to order, in case you’re curious.

There is something for most moods and tastes and, if you just have a craving for something sweet after indulging in a little retail therapy, you’ll not be disappointed. As I tapped my spoon on the top of the gluten-free chocolate fondant and saw the melting chocolate ooze out and spill over the vanilla ice cream, I thought to myself: yeah, this place really does have a lot to offer!

Ohlala’s Craig Ferriman joins the festivities as Peruvian eatery La Mar blows out two birthday candles.

P

eople often ask me,“What is your favourite restaurant?”

And I usually throw it back at them and ask, “What do you want from a restaurant?” To me, dining out is an all-round social and sensual experience. You can serve the finest food, but if the service is slack and the atmosphere is dead, what’s the point?

It’s for this very reason that La Mar ranks at the top of my list when I’m recommending a good night out to anyone who asks. My gut told me good things from the moment I first stepped inside two years ago – just before it launched – and my gut has been reliably rewarded ever since! La Mar thanked its loyal patrons at a recent celebration dinner to mark two years since it welcomed diners in the Middle East. It’s a restaurant that first opened in Lima by celebrated chef Gastón Acurio, serving Peruvian-style seafood.

Today, it has branched out geographically across Latin America and to our own shores, all while diversifying its menu. When I tell people that the restaurant is a must-visit, I get asked about Peruvian food and what makes it so special. Right now, La Mar is one of the few places in town offering Peruvian cuisine, and the dining experience is not complete without its classic ceviche. The restaurant, while fine www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats dining in nature, boasts a menu that is rooted in authenticity. It also utilises the freshest ingredients and, whenever possible, sources local products in order to adapt to its location.

But it’s not just about the food. La Mar occupies a prime piece of real estate that lives up to its name, which translates to ‘the sea’. If you sit outside, you are right in front of the beach, taking in unrivalled sea views with the glistening West Bay skyline shimmering in the background. The kitchen is bold and constantly trying new things. For the second anniversary dinner, it served a menu embracing the influence of Chinese and Japanese immigrants on Peruvian food.

Among the cold appetisers appeared sushi – scallops, cucumber, avocado, coriander in a maki roll with chimichurri and shichimi togarashi. It was a real confluence of cultural tastes. And alongside the hot appetisers were dumplings. They were deep fried in a classic Chinese fashion, but also stuffed with seafood, egg, sweet chilli and garlic sauce, and spring onions. The Chinese wouldn’t recognise it as true dim sum, but the Peruvians wouldn’t eat it either. Bring the two culinary concepts together and the result? Genius.

As for the mains? Pulpo (or grilled octopus) in an anticuchera sauce that wins fans over every time. In widening its menu, it has in turn embraced meat, and the beef striploin I tucked into was superbly seasoned, complemented by wild mushrooms, and cooked to order – rare for me, in case you’re wondering. La Mar does not rest on its laurels. It builds on a strong foundation, retains high service standards, and continues to innovate. Happy birthday!

MISS OHLALA LOOKS TO FIRSTGRADERS FOR INSPIRATION AS 2020 DRAWS TO A CLOSE. You’ve made it – not just to the end of the magazine, but also the year. Well done. 2020 will go down in history for so many reasons, most of them unpleasant. As several countries worldwide enter a second lockdown and we celebrate the festive season on a slightly more sombre note, the order of the day is gratitude. If you’re reading this closing note, it means you’re safe and healthy, but we can’t say the same about everyone unfortunately. Yes, gratitude amidst a pandemic can feel like a tricky endeavour, but maybe we can take a cue from first-graders?

A local newspaper in the state of Minnesota asked a handful of six-year-olds about what they’re grateful for, and things like teachers, chicken nuggets, and Tony the hamster emerged as winners. One rather self-assured first-grader even replied, “Myself.” And while their simple insights are downright endearing, it’s important for us adults to take a moment to reflect on the brilliance of this simplicity. This year, we aren’t obsessing over what heels to pair with our favourite dress to the office Christmas party nor are we headed to a big glitzy bash on New Year’s Eve. Instead, we find joy in the little things: a cup of hot chocolate as temperatures drop, a virtual catch-up with an old friend, or just taking off a face mask at the end of a long day. Try to think back to these moments as you count down to 2021 and usher in a (hopefully much happier) new year ahead.
