If the seasons were people, Fall would be the attractive, clean-cut, sophisticated one. Winter is the coldhearted one that everyone just wants to go away. Spring is cute and playful and can be pretty fun. But, summer? Summer is an absolute party animal. Everyone loves summer. People are so much happier when summer comes around. It’s the season completely devoted to leisure and good times with the people you love. Summer is so much more laid back and you can get away with stuff you just can’t during the colder months. Ice lollies for dinner? Yes please! Being outside, running around, swimming. I for one love when I’m picked up in the pool to see how weightless I am. You literally drop like a hundred pounds instantly. And you know what else? Cellulite looks way less like cottage cheese when it’s tan. Everyone looks better with some colour. You don’t even need to wear make-up. I figure I’m about one or two more beach days away from the point that my freckles have actually meshed together and I could pass for being bronzed. And what’s better than a day at the beach? Everybody loves the beach. Summer (like our round-up of fashion and travel escapes) is certainly heating up. Everything is just… SO. HOT. RIGHT. NOW! Oh, and before I go… this will be my last feature as ‘Miss Green’ as the marital nuptials are well under way for July! On that note, I wish you all a fantastic time making lots of memories and make sure that you are having plenty of fun surrounded by the people you love,

evji Aurum Design House & Studio, one of the leading jewellery designers and manufacturers in the Kingdom of Bahrain is proud to launch an iconic series entitled “The Art Collection”. A series of conceptual collections that will be designed to bear the signature of a featured visionary artist and masterfully crafted by Devji Aurum, inspired by icons for those who seek to be iconic. The soft launch took place on Sunday 16th June 2019, at Devji Aurum boutique at Seef Mall. Devji Aurum was pleased to have art enthusiasts and jewellery collectors discovering the new collection through this special occasion. The first edition of the Art Collection “Rafrafa” is a concept that emerged from a monumental collaborative effort to achieve an ambitious dream 32

If looking after your skin is your main goal than booking a facial before you fly is the way to go. Book your facial in a couple of days before your trip in order to deep cleanse your pores and provide hydrating to your skin and that way your skin is in its best condition before you even set foot in an airport. Next up, we were treated to one of the most down-right brilliant hair experiences. My stylist for the afternoon was Stefan. Warm, charismatic and with enough cheeky banter to keep me from falling into a relaxation induced coma, he set about transforming our frazzled barnet into creamy glossy locks with an attentiveness unmatched by any other salon we’ve been to. Our hair had previously been dip-dyed and was looking tired to say the least. After careful questioning about our hair rituals, likes, and dislikes we settled on a root ‘touch-up’ where lashings of grey strands had started to form. Stefan is undoubtedly a magician as he started to employ a series of techniques to allow for optimum coverage. Once washed off, and a beautiful blow dry later, our locks are the most luscious they have been in a very long time. These are the kind of tresses we’d give an arm for – proof that the team at Gloss knows exactly how to execute their services well and deliver the desired results. Perfection. What we loved most about all the treatments and interaction with the staff was that there were no moments of pressure – you felt like you were part of their family. MARKETING MOGUL We delve into a day in the life of CRISTALYN PASTRANA, Cluster Director of Marketing for Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain, and this woman is truly is unstoppable.

I start my day... Our household usually wakes up as early as 5am during weekdays. Our daughter Salma goes to school, so my husband and I need to also prepare for the day ahead. We are usually out of the house by 6.15am to avoid traffic and I arrive at work before 8am. My role is… I am the Cluster Director of Marketing for three hotels in Bahrain; Sheraton Bahrain Hotel and the complex The Westin & Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain. I have a fantastic Marketing and PR team that I have worked closely with to build fantastic marketing strategies for these three brands and execute PR events. A Day in the Life of Cristalyn… My life is always hectic (as you can imagine!), the day at the office usually starts on my second cup of coffee of the day. My morning consists of reading the newspaper and going through emails. Not to forget the daily morning brief with my team to review what has been done the previous day and the tasks to fulfill for the current day. As I switch days on both hotels it is very important that I go over a list of things to do for both of my teams on a daily basis. If I am at the Sheraton I ensure that my team at The Westin & Le Méridien are updated on things to do as well through our WhatsApp group. Oh, the power of technology! At 9am we have our meeting with other heads of departments and our General Manager to go over hotel operations and information collated from the previous day and provide an overview of the day ahead e.g VIP arrivals, special events, company updates and other business related communication that needs to be shared with the team. The day will continue with strategy meetings, meetings with media and suppliers, going through social media strategy, checking creative with our Graphic Designer and checking communication updates as per brand. After work it is back to my mother and wife duties at home. How I got into the hospitality industry… My hospitality career started in Jordan at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea back in 2006 as their PR Coordinator. I’ve always loved being around people, so, working with the media gave a true synergy to this ethos. Do you have a portfolio of weddings that you’ve recently done that Bridesto-be can browse? We launched our event space in March 2019 but we have already hosted several weddings and engagement parties outdoor and in the Al Sarra Ballroom since then. We always offer brides to be the opportunity to look through a selection of photographs from past events to inspire them or help them picture the various options available. As the main contact for wedding planning in the property I also love to share stories and ideas from previous couples, my aim is to make sure our guests have a wedding that looks like them. How would you describe your design style? (e.g. traditional, modern, rustic, organic) We have a beautiful indoor venue that offers timeless elegance with a hint of traditional Bahraini design, however it is also a chameleon ballroom that can be turned into exactly what the couple is looking for. The event area offers many set-up options, guests can play with the various spaces whether it is the terrace, the majlis or the dining hall to create dedicated space for each activity and to ease the logistics. Our outdoor space is also gorgeous just by the pool and the Arabian sea. It is a perfect choice for a winter wedding in Bahrain. It has a unique Mediterranean feel to it with the ancient olive trees surrounding the pristine pool. The luxurious pool cabanas can be used as live food stations to enhance the dining experience. Tell us about a time you had to deal with a last-minute change or unexpected situation when planning an event. Unexpected situations are an inevitable part of wedding planning and a wedding day without a few surprises does not exist. My role is to be always ready to solve any problem and lessen their consequences from arranging a last minute pick-up at the airport for one of the wedding guests to coordinating between various suppliers. The wedding couple and their guests must be able to live a perfect day without the pressure of event logistics and everything has to go as smoothly as possible. What are some of the ways you measure event success? I’m always striving to improve and become a more efficient event planner. My main concern is guests’ satisfaction so my first step is to gather feedback from the couple and their relatives. Then I collect surveys from the attendees.Feedback from my team is also important as they will determine whether the event flow and logistic were properly organised from an operational standpoint.

MELEK YILDIRIMTEKIN sashayed down to 34 MAYFAIR’S revered Weekend Brunch with its seasonal menu and international influences, and left longing to return.

F

rom the moment we arrived, we knew we were going to be in for a treat. We were met with colour popping florals, which is always a good sign and it truly set the scene for our gastronomic affair. 34 Mayfair Restaurant exterior aligned and complemented its lush interior which showcases itself as being influenced by the Art Deco period. Contemporary elegance and sophistication was intertwined in the furnishings in bucket loads as was the evident pride that projected from their humble and down-to-earth staff. Now, this is what Londoners want. Once greeted by our host, their staff politely cabined away our shopping bags and coats which immediately allowed us to relax and take in the grandeur of the surroundings. As we were shown to our table by the Grand Piano, we couldn’t help but peer over at the full restaurant guests plates! It all smelled heavenly and was presented beautifully! A simple and not overwhelming brunch menu - served Saturday and Sunday between 11:30am to 5pm - with a decor to make one feel like they’ve just stepped into an award winning piece of art. Quality meats, fresh fish and seafood adorned the menu in an understated yet elegant fashion. The Ceviche caught my eye as did my favourite ingredient; truffle. We were after brunch and my word, they certainly delivered. For starters we opted for the Mixed Sashimi, Cornish Crab with pink grapefruit, spiced avocado and pistachio, The Salmon and Avocado Poke with rainbow radish sesame and macadamia, and last but by ‘no-means68

least’ a Steak Tartare. After shopping in Mayfair it’s evident that it makes one extremely hungry! When our starters arrived, we paused as it all looked so beautiful and delicately put together, but that notion of complacency shortly ended. One word… ‘scoffed’, within seconds may I add. Everything down to the edible flowers carefully placed on our dishes were gobbled up. 34 Mayfair certainly packed a punch with their plethora starters as we found ourselves peering around other tables to see what mains might entice us. Prime Beef from Argentina, the Japanese Wagyu and Chateaubriand for two hand us salivating at the thought, but as we looked back-and-forth at the menu and the other diners plates we were only able to execute any decision with the welcoming help of our waiter. We decided to opt for one meat dish - Chateaubriand for two, one Fish dish - The Dover Sole and one other dish that you would never see at other restaurants, The Lobster Macaroni with Black Truffle! The quality ingredients and execution of each of our dishes were second-to-none; perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and, of course, perfectly placed. They source the very best cuts of beef from breeders around the world for taste, texture and quality, from pure heritage breed in the Yorkshire Dales to A5 Japanese Wagyu, all cooked on their bespoke Argentinian parrilla grill. Our waiter greeted us with our dover sole and carefully deboned it in front of us - the Chateaubriand was sliced and cooked to perfection, and that lobster macaroni with beautifully cooked lobster and large shaved Black Truffle? Well, I definitely need more of that in my life!

My eyes darted straight towards the signature 34 Donuts with three different dipping sauces; chocolate, lemon meringue and raspberry. Not to shy away from our sweet tooth we allowed ourselves The Honeycomb Parfait with raspberries and zabaglione. It truly was one of those ‘if this could be my last meal, I’ve ended with a high note’ moments and we admonish you to truly visit this establishment of perfection at once. 34 Mayfair Restaurant, you’ve stole our hearts and well and truly tantalised out taste buds. Everything from the staff, the actual execution of the team, the quality of not just the food itself, but the whole entity was an utter dream and we will certainly be returning. Our final words of advice? A MONSOON MEDLEY When we think of far-eastern cuisine, what comes to mind is a colossal mix of tastes, textures and ingredients. From delicately delicious dim sums and spicy fried rice to tangy orange chicken and some oh-so delicious Pad Thai; Asian food is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant cuisines the world has to offer. AANCHAL DUGGAL went to discover the array of dishes that MONSOON restaurant has to offer…

aking authentic far-eastern cuisine to a whole new level, Monsoon has been serving Bahrain’s discerning diners with decadently delicious food for almost two decades now. Entrenched in tradition and innovation, the restaurant is a tribute to the palaces of Bali and temples of The Orient. Ohlala’s go-to destination for bona fide cuisine from the Far East, Monsoon serves Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese food in a traditional Asian setting. As their ever-so friendly staff ushered us in, the majestic doors and breathtaking interiors enticed us for what was to come. We started our culinary expedition with a scrumptious platter featuring some of the best Thai delicacies; Wang Ruam. A mouthwatering medley of Kanom Pang Na Kung (crunchy shrimp toast), Toon Tong (golden prawn money bags), Gai Hor Bai Teur (pandan chicken bites) and Poh Pia Tod (crispy spring rolls) all made up this beautifully-presented platter and each component tasted just as delicious as it sounds. The shrimp toasts are perfectly golden and packed with flavour, while the pandan chicken bites are like little nuggets of heaven. So good! If you’re a poke enthusiast, our next dish will be right up your alley. A bowl of freshly diced tuna akami with tangy chuka wakame, spicy mayo, pickled cucumber, fried shallots and edamame beans; the refreshing and tantalising blend of textures and flavours had us oohing and aahing from the very first bite. The fish was super fresh and flawlessly seasoned, while the spicy mayo provided just the right amount of kick. Definitely one of our favourites of the meal! As we (not so) patiently waited for our next dish of Edo (mixed sushi and sashimi platter), we were informed that Monsoon imports ingredients from all over the globe to serve up the freshest, flavourful and most authentic dishes. Our next plate was a true testament to their philosophy. A treat for our senses, the gorgeously decked sushi and sashimi platter had our cameras and chopsticks at the ready. Featuring everything from Sashimi (maguro, shake, samachi, suzuki) and Makisushi (California) to Nigiri (hamachi,

ebi, shake, unagi, suzuki, hotate, tako, tuna), we were in sushi heaven! Bringing our love for this Japanese gem to the very fore, the decadent Makirolls, to-die-for Tuna Nigiri as well as the luscious Hamachi Sashimi, all transported us to the streets of Japan itself. With a newly renovated sushi bar featuring some of the most creative delicacies, from Soft Shell Crab Tempura Maki to Bluefin Tuna Nigiri with a truffle and ponzu jelly you cannot help but be impressed. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we were introduced to our first main of the day - Soy Braised Short Rib. This was no ordinary short rib; it came with truffle dashi foam and pickled shiitake mushrooms for an added oomph! The ribs are juicy and tender, and richly flavoured, while the creamy truffle foam and mushrooms truly bring the earthy nature of the dish together. Apart from the serene ambiance and some of the most amazing staff we’ve had the pleasure of being served by, what makes Monsoon one of our favourite restaurants in Bahrain is its immense attention to detail and quality. As our next dish of Khao Pad Sapparod was presented to us in an actual pineapple shell, we knew that the culinary team at Monsoon takes their food and its presentation seriously. Pineapple rice with prawns, calamari, sea bass and aromatic curry powder and onion, this dish is unlike anything we have ever had before. Oozing with delicate flavour, the rice is sweet without being too overwhelming, while the onion and curry powder add a spicy twist to the mix. Satiating all our curry cravings, Gaeng Kiew Waan is a must-try for all curry lovers out there. It’s a light, vibrant Thai green curry of fresh green chillies, garlic and sweet basil. Juicy tender chicken swims in creamy, flavourful curry - we had to go back for seconds! As we were on the verge of diving deep into a very fulfilling food coma, our dessert of Khao Niew Mamoung was brought out. Needless to say, we did not say no! Thai sweet mango sticky rice served with coconut ice cream, the dessert is an explosion of tastes and textures. From the rich and creamy ice cream to the super fresh mango slices, this is what dessert dreams are made of ! Apart from some tasty culinary masterpieces, Monsoon also serves

W

hen one thinks of well-known and highly respected automobile brands, Volvo has to be considered amongst the very best. They have achieved this feat through their unwavering dedication to improving ingenuity as well as their impeccable safety standards. Thanks to the team at Motor City, we had the chance to discover what the masterminds at Volvo have been up to, by test-driving the 2019 S90. The S90 is classed as a premium sedan and marks a huge leap forward for Volvo Cars as it has allowed the brand to plant a firm foothold in the executive class sedan segment. On first inspection, it was plain to see that only minor changes have been made to the exterior of the vehicle. It seems that the brand has adopted the attitude of, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” This is very understandable considering just how perfect the S90 has been since its conception in 2017. Having created such a beautiful motor vehicle, its designers have merely been fine tuning specific features of the vehicle to keep it a step or two ahead of most other car manufacturers. The slightly increased length of the 2019 model is a little larger than its predecessors. Its refined design is complemented by its neat lines, one of which flows along the full length of the car, emphasising its enhanced size. The license plate has been situated on the bumper,

A great feature of the exterior is the elongated hood that suggests there is plenty of power on offer. The classically styled front grille is reminiscent of the Volvo P1800 from the 1960’s and 70’s and certainly adds a further touch of class to the already impressive exterior design. The “Thor’s Hammer” Led headlights are a yet another novel feature whilst the side mirrors are attached to the doors, not the A-Pillar as is usually the case with most vehicles. This assists in the reduction of wind resistance and blind spots. As we were handed the key-fob for the S90, we were informed that the device will always be colour coordinated with one’s vehicle, a lovely little touch indeed. An open and airy feeling is what greeted us as we entered the very Scandinavian feel interior with its cool and refreshing colour palate. The beautifully designed leather seats are soft and comfortable as well as perfectly designed to hug and support your body. It is clear that time and effort has gone into all aspects of the design, with luxury to found in every corner of the S90’s interior. Plenty of leg, shoulder and head room is on offer in the back seats, with a further 500-litres of luggage space being available thanks to the boot space, ensuring this sedan is practical for everyday use. New Volvo models such as the 2019 S90 all house the Sensus connectivity and infotainment system. This intuitive touch screen interface combines various car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment applications. This enables fast and easy

access to a variety of the vehicle’s features and functions. Smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is also available. A truly user-friendly system to say the least. Starting her up, the smooth feel and sound of the 2.0, 4-cylinder, petrol turbocharged engine was immediately obvious. The T5 has a maximum power output of 250 hp at 5500 rpm, can power from 0-100 km/h in a respectable 6.8 seconds and holds a top speed of 230 km/h. The vehicle seems to float along the roads with the eight-speed Geartronic™ transmission ensuring the smoothest of rides. The handling and grip on offer are simply superb and we always felt in complete control, even on the trickiest of corners. Being able to view the head-up display through polaroid sunglasses was yet another useful upgrade. The S90 would not be a Volvo if it didn’t house all of the latest and greatest safety features on the market. Complete with Distance Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Run-Off Road Mitigation, Driver Alert Control, Run-Off Road Protection, a reinforced passenger compartment, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), dual-stage airbags, head restraints, Parking Assist and so much more. MISS Ohlala In years gone by the moment I spread-eagled my suitcase on the spare bed , removed flyers and a dusting of sand from my last trip and the out of date airline labels, I knew that departure was imminent. It was a joy to load my newly purchased dresses, flip-flops and various linen items and carefully select shoes which would complement three or four outfits. Weight limits were not an issue back then. Every ounce did not have to be purchased. Aaahhhh, the halcyon days of vacationing. Jump forward 15 years, and several frown lines and wrinkles later. Preparing for a trip is no longer a joy to be anticipated but rather the epitome of stress. The main issue is generally my travelling companions’ expectations versus reality. Their need for three outfits per day versus their refusal to pay for more than 22kg of hold luggage. Their inability to refrain from wearing their favourite jeans the day before we travel yet the expectation that they will be laundered and packed the next morning. The need to cram in un-ironed and unfolded items at the last moment by opening the zip just a fraction and forcing them in whilst disturbing everything else that was expertly packed. Then comes the debate over departure time. Rush, hurry, late and hectic are words that I actively choose to omit from my holiday experiences; at least those in the golden age before family. I would rather wake up an hour earlier and park, check -in and pass through security in a leisurely fashion. The rest of the clan are not believers of this philosophy. They would rather drive in a kamikaze fashion, abandon the car as opposed to parking it and beg to jump the queue at security because the flight is minutes away from closing. Entering the plane after sauntering through duty free, making a few purchases along the way versus jamming your foot in the aircraft door to prevent the Air Stewards from closing it and finding every overhead locker already packed full. All for the sake of another hour in bed? I despair. Despite this plethora of panic, the memories made, cultures absorbed and vast amounts of seafood devoured make the pre-flight turmoil worth it. Precious time with loved ones versus calm, tranquillity and hours of soaking up the sun with your head buried in a book, it’s a no- brainer, right? Only 10 more years until I am no longer legally responsible for them … Happy holidays!
