E D I T O R’ S L E T T E R January’s not exactly a great month. You’re broke from the festive period it feels like it is freezing cold all the time – not to mention that summer still feels like a long time away. And those New Year’s resolutions you made? Sure, you meant well… but you broke them five days after making them, and you just don’t have the motivation to try again. If you’re feeling down in the dumps this January, then you’re not alone. The official most depressing day of the year is the 20th January, dubbed Blue Monday. Our favourite kind of blue would be undoubtedly the Pantone Colour of the Year 2020 Classic Blue which our Miss Ohlala delves into further, so, let’s focus on the positive side of ‘feeling blue’. If you’re stressed or sad, it can be so easy to reach for a bar of chocolate or a slice of cake. Whilst you’ll get a quick boost, your energy levels will soon come crashing back down. One of the best ways to beat those January blues is by having a healthy diet. If you need a boost of energy, snack on food that’s high in tryptophan, such as turkey, eggs and cheese. Also, exercise as endorphins are triggered in the brain, making you feel happy. Just 30 minutes of exercise a day will help you to feel the benefits, as you tackle those dreaded January blues. Meet your friends. Put down the phone. WhatsApping your friend does not equate to having a real-life conversation, and you’ll feel so much better if you physically meet up with them. Wishing you all a prosperous year full of health, wealth and giggles! Make 2020 YOUR year, I know I will be...
Memories are the one gift you give to yourself.

RÉCITAL 23 MOON PHASE IS THE FIRST BOVET WOMEN’S TIMEPIECE TO FEATURE THE “WRITING SLOPE” CASE, DESIGNED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AN OVAL SHAPE.
SYMBOLIC Hours and minutes occupy an off-center dial at 6 o’clock, while a
deeply poetic three-dimensional moon phase is displayed on the upper section of the Récital 23 Moon phase timepiece. Since the dawn of time, people have been telling the time by the stars. Many cultures still use the lunar calendar and the dates of many — often religious — celebrations are frequently established according to the age of the moon. The moon also exerts a physical influence on our world, notably on the tides. Fishermen as well as farmers and winegrowers order their activities in accordance with our natural satellite. Sensibilities and moods are also often connected to lunar changes and it seems illusory to attempt to draw up an exhaustive list of the beliefs and influences attributed to the moon. The Récital 23 timepiece is driven by a self-winding mechanical movement. Its oscillating weight in 22-ct gold is finely hand-engraved with the ‘Fleurisanne’ motif that Maison BOVET 1822 has been producing for almost two centuries. Its oscillations power two barrels whose energy guarantees 62 hours’ of power reserve. The module, entirely developed and manufactured in BOVET 1822’s workshops, makes it possible to offset the time display and add the moon phase indicator. Presented in the form of a hemispherical dome, the moon phase indicator majestically corresponds to the volume of the ‘writing slope” case. The dome’s surface is engraved to evoke the lunar surface and filled with luminescent material. This feat is all the more remarkable due to the indicato’s camber. It is read via a three-dimensional circular aperture that single handedly requires over a day’s work to be manufactured and decorated. The precision mechanism used to drive the moon phase requires correction only once every 122 years. Keen to develop useful complications that would allow everyday use of the timepiece, Mr. Raffy — BOVET 1822’s Owner —sought to incorporate a push button into the cabochon of the crown so as to be able to adjust the moon phase. The latter is therefore easily modified without needing to use the slightest tool. For its debut, the Récital 23 will be available in white gold, red gold or titanium models. The gold cases may be decorated with a bezel set with round diamonds or baguette-cut diamonds or be entirely paved with round diamonds. The dial dial-makers of BOVET 1822 have created two dials of choice for this new piece. As she wishes, irrespective of the case’s material, each collector will be able to choose between a dial of blue aventurine glass or black Tahitian mother-of-pearl adorned with a delicate guilloché motif. Elegant hour and minute hands gracefully glide over each dial. Every hour, when the hour and minute hands overlap, their atypical designs form the shape of a heart, outlined in negative space. Timeless and symbolic, the new Récital 23 represents the values which drive Mr. Raffy and the artisans of BOVET 1822 : passion for fine watchmaking, and a devotion to perpetuate BOVET 1822’s illustrious history with noble new expressions of the timekeeping art.

BOVET 1822 CELEBRATES TWO CENTURIES OF DECORATIVE ARTS AND EXCELLENCE WITH THE AMADEO® FLEURIER 39 “POPPIES” GRAND FEU ENAMEL
For almost two centuries,
the Maison BOVET has been taking the watchmaking’s decorative arts to new heights while continuing to delight collectors and art lovers with the virtuosity of its artisans. Mr. Raffy, Maison BOVET 1822’s owner, is once again demonstrating his dedication to keeping alive the tradition of decorative arts and the finest expression of time. As a way of keeping the same working methods, the same techniques and the same rigor as his illustrious predecessors, Mr. Raffy and the House of BOVET partnered with Mr. Ilgiz Fazulzyanov, an artistic expert in Grand Feu enamel and one of the most prominent jewelry designers of his generation, to present an exclusive collection of timepieces. The poppies in this unique composition form a bouquet illuminated by no fewer than 138 diamonds that offer them enchanting reflections and contrasts. This exceptional work is housed in the 39-mm-diameter Fleurier Amadeo case. It took the Maison BOVET seven years to develop this ingenious patented system that allows anyone — in simple steps, without any tools — to convert their timepiece into a table clock or, respectively, a pocket watch for the gentlemen’s designs and a pendant for the women’s models.

DECLARATIONS With Valentine’s Day on the horizon CHOPARD have you covered with the most dazzling showcase. Through its creativity, the Maison Chopard, the quintessential Artisan of Emotions, infuses the act of giving with its noblest meaning: the gifts made to those we love become bonds conveying deep feelings and shared values. Valentine’s Day offers the watchmaker-jeweller an opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of its creative genius and to be a partner to the most beautiful declarations. For a wife, a fiancé, a dear friend or indeed anyone who is an object of affection, this uniquely special day gives everyone a chance to express the sincerity of their feelings.
HAPPY HEARTS – CHOPARD’S BIG HEART
Mischievous and generous Happy Hearts jewellery perpetually reinvents itself through a multitude of variations and colours, in step with the seasons and women’s desires. Chopard’s boundless creativity has now given rise to new short necklaces joining the collection, featuring a coloured heart in onyx, mother-of-pearl, malachite or red stone, adorned on either side with two hearts bearing a dancing diamond. Likewise, the bangle bracelet, that most iconic expression of Happy Hearts, appears in an even more precious version. In addition to its large mother-of-pearl or diamond heart performing a graceful pas de deux with a smaller heart gently framing the impulsive twirls of a dancing diamond, the bracelet is adorned for the first time with a dainty lateral diamond setting. After a first watch presented in 2019, the Happy Hearts collection once again welcomes a new timepiece allowing hearts to dance around its dial in complete freedom. At the heart of its 30-millimeter steel and 18-carat rose gold case, the delightful mother-of-pearl dial provides a perfect setting for the ballet performed by a dancing diamond and two dancing hearts: one in 18-carat rose gold and mother-of-pearl, and the other in diamond-set 18-carat white gold. 30
HAPPY DIAMONDS ICONS – TALISMAN-LIKE DANCING DIAMONDS
Like an alchemist, Chopard has the ability to fashion the shape of the heart to create its most accomplished, perfect and proportionate version for the Happy Diamonds Icons. The heart reveals all the Emotion of the Maison, which pays multiple tributes to those who are unafraid to reveal their feelings and express their love. With Happy Diamonds Icons, a great jewellery classic invites itself into women’s lives. Whirling between two sapphire crystals, one or three dancing diamonds bring sparkling life to a new series of short necklaces in 18-carat white or rose gold, either polished or set with diamonds, completing the collection. They symbolise the impulses of the heart as well as every move of the women who wear them like precious talismans.
L’HEURE DU DIAMANT – THE SHEER DELIGHT OF PRECIOUS HOURS
With the L’Heure du Diamant watch collection, the Artisans of the Maison have orchestrated an encounter between jewellery and watches. Infused with a delightful 1970s spirit, these diamond bedecked timepieces sparkling with timeless charm are all about light and airy proportions. Previously introduced in round or oval versions, L’Heure du Diamant watches now appear with a case shaped like a vibrant heart, of which the steady beat is evoked by the hand-engraved guilloché motif gracing the mother-of-pearl dial. Two versions, in 18-carat rose or white gold, are paired with a gold link bracelet and a white mother-of-pearl dial. Two others are teamed with a blue or burgundy leather strap and feature a mother-of-pearl dial in matching shades.
HAUTE JOAILLERIE – AN ANTHEM TO RUBIES
L.U.C XPS TWIST QF – THE ART OF EXTRAVAGANCE
While Haute Horlogerie traditions are generally about symmetry, an aesthetic order to which the eye responds instinctively, the L.U.C XPS Twist QF timepiece chooses to express itself in a different vein. It has fun by introducing a slightly offset crown and off-centred small seconds display at 7 o’clock – a signature feature of the Twist series within the L.U.C. collection. Crafted in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified 18-carat white gold and issued in a 250-piece limited series, it opts for carefully controlled eccentricity and elegant asymmetry beating to the rhythm of the L.U.C 96.26-L movement with automatic winding, equipped with a 22-carat gold micro rotor and two stacked barrels – based on Chopard Twin technology. While fulfilling the criteria of several certification programmes particularly cherished by Chopard, the L.U.C XPS Twist QF timepiece features a wide range of elegant features. Fleurier Quality Foundation certification, chronometer certification, Chopard Twin technology with two barrels, a case in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified gold: it goes well beyond aesthetic prowess to offer superlative craftsmanship. A slim fit on the wrist, rich textures, production quality and a resolutely ethical dimension: nothing is missing from the picture, including a hint of extravagance.
In her sketchbooks, Caroline Scheufele, the inspiration behind Chopard Haute Joaillerie, dreamed of highlighting rubies. Firstly, through an imposing necklace composed of no less than 23 Mozambican rubies and diamonds set in ethical ‘Fairmined’ certified gold – a rare form of artisanal gold of which the responsible mining is actively supported by Chopard. Secondly, through a ring that the Maison’s Artistic Direction has chosen in order to showcase a beautiful 5-carat ruby in the much-coveted pigeon’s blood colour. Carved in the shape of a heart, the stone appears to throb to the rhythm of the passion that drives the deepest feelings. An ode to rubies, masterfully composed by the expertise and virtuosity deployed in the Chopard Haute Joaillerie ateliers.
“Valentine’s Day offers the watchmaker-jeweller an opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of its creative genius and to be a partner to the most beautiful declarations.”
L.U.C CHRONO ONE FLYBACK – THE CHIC CHRONOGRAPH
With its chic subtle grey nuances, the L.U.C Chrono One Flyback timepiece is imbued with the relaxed, contemporary and controlled elegance that is the unique signature of L.U.C. creations. Issued in a 250-piece steel limited edition, it is equipped with a chronometer-certified calibre, designed and assembled within Chopard Manufacture. The L.U.C 03.03-L movement, with a running time of 60 hours, is of the flyback type, enabling this model to measure short times smoothly and easily, since this function serves to reset the counters to zero and restart at a single press. The calibre is also equipped with a stop seconds device enabling highly accurate time setting. Finally, it is equipped with a 22-carat gold openworked rotor. Four patents have been duly registered and approved for these technologies developed by Chopard’s research and development teams.
Above and beyond its watch and jewellery expertise, Chopard offers a collection of accessories fashioned from the finest materials by the best Artisans. The Maison’s range of leather goods is now enriched with the Happy Hearts shoulder bag collection. Inspired by this jewellery line, of which the colourful hearts have become the signature of the Maison, two red calf leather bags once again celebrate the heart. Within the graceful outline of their heart-shaped clasp, the Chopard C performs an eternal dance, radiating the joy of living that it symbolises through a wave of topstitching in all the colours of the rainbow. A subtle blend of femininity and audacity. For men, Chopard reflects the world of gentlemen drivers through two Classic Racing straps in black braided leather featuring a minimalist style epitomising timeless luxury. The unmistakable symbol of the Mille Miglia collections, the famous herringbone pattern of 1960s Dunlop tyres, adorns the black and red or black and grey Chopard clasp, ensuring an inimitable sport-chic look. Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet encourages women to reappropriate time. Inspired by the aesthetics of 17th -century single-hand timepieces, the new Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique tells time…philosophically! This design watch is a statement of creative freedom and freespirited individuality. In defiance of the rush and frenzy of today’s world, the Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique puts time on women’s side, its single hand defying contemporary conventions of time measurement. This abstract watch has been meticulously hand-finished by their watchmakers, in the highest respect for Audemars Piguet’s traditions. The 18-carat pink or white gold case presents alternating satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing, a technique Audemars Piguet owes to Florentine jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. The diamond-dust effect it creates results from hours of meticulous micro-hammering. Adding a subtle touch of colour, the see-through caseback reveals the oscillating weight, which coloured plates recall the hand-crafted dimpled dial in shades of brown or blue. The single hour hand is polished and sand-blasted. Adding to the current hand-wound collection, this watch is equipped with a new selfwinding movement, calibre 3140. This movement is endowed with a patented mechanism which ticks the hand around the dial in an elliptical trajectory. The hour wheel directly corresponds with a transparent disc on the dial, on which the single hand is mounted. This enables the hand to follow a clear trajectory despite the elliptical case. MILLENARY: A CANVAS FOR CREATIVITY
Since its establishment in 1875, Audemars Piguet has crafted mechanical watches for women, ranging from timeless classics to avant-garde artistic creations, all suited to the evolving nature of women’s lifestyles. Combining technical mastery, creative aesthetics, optimum ergonomics and refined finishing techniques, these creations have challenged expectations over the years, while honouring the highest level of Haute Horlogerie and gem-setting traditions. Since it first appeared in 1995, the Millenary has been a canvas for creativity with its elliptical case, eccentric dials and visible hand-wound movement. Inspired by architecture and art, this watch of contrasts intertwines technical savoirfaire and innovative design. While the collection was originally conceived for men, the first models for women made their appearance in 1998, becoming more prominent over the years. Since 2015, the collection has been exclusively designed for women presenting off-beat and multifaceted models endowed with a wide array of materials and finishing techniques, including chamfering, satin brushing and Frosted Gold Finishing. 32
Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Audemars Piguet’s latest collection, launched earlier this year, endows the timeless round watch with a contemporary twist. Embodying the Manufacture’s uncompromising spirit, Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet shatters boundaries of time, geometry and gender. A SUBTLE TOUCH OF COLOUR
A new assortment of leather straps brings refined hues of blue, brown, grey and pearl are added to the collection. The straight integration of the strap in the continuity of the lugs, which have been welded to the extra-thin bezel, reveals the refined hand-finishing techniques adorning the case’s unconventional and multifaceted architecture.
Consciously designed for women and men—a first in the Manufacture’s history—Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet refutes gender boundaries. The complex case composed of an octagonal middle case embedded in a round bezel and caseback has been conceived to adapt to different wrists. Its optimum curved ergonomics makes it comfortable for all to wear despite its 41mm in diameter. The case’s arched profile also embodies the watch’s innovative design. The collection’s contemporary and sober aesthetics adapts to different looks.
Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet represents the most comprehensive launch in the Manufacture’s history with 13 references, including 4 complications and 3 new calibres: an integrated chronograph with column wheel and flyback function, a self winding movement with seconds and date indication and a selfwinding flying tourbillon calibre. Hand-decorated to the slightest detail with refined finishing techniques, these movements unite tradition and innovation. Constantly on the brink of tomorrow, the collection will present new evolutions this 2020! PIONEERING SKINCARE Indulge in made-to-measure facial and body rituals from the house of luxury French skincare brand Anne Semonin at The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.
We are all about the finer things in life at Ohlala, so, there is no wonder that we’ve made Anne Semonin part of our New Year’s Resolution List. Here are 7 Reasons as to why the Anne Semonin Facials at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is revolutionary, just in case you needed some extra persuading... • The Anne Semonin collection is designed with a simple insight in mind: Everyone’s skin is unique, and skin changes daily. Each treatment is tailored to each individual using made-to-measure prescription and a holistic approach to your specific skin concerns. • Anne Semonin formulations are unique and exclusive. Essential oils boosted by trace elements create a powerful cocktail of active ingredients that penetrate through the deepest layers of the skin, helping it to detoxify and regenerate rapidly. Skin looks and feels rejuvenated, fresh and radiant, with a youthful glow. • Grace Kelly and Catherine Deneuve went to Paris-based Anne Semonin for facials – need we say more!? • Harnessing the power of essential oils and minerals, each product diminishes signs of ageing and the effects of environmental aggressors. The ‘Youth Radiance Elixir’ is our top pick. • They are the only brand using the Energetic Drainage technique developed by founder, Anne Semonin, 30 years ago. This signature massage technique, although performed locally on the face, has the ability to stimulate the whole body, ensuring instant visible results. It’s why Anne Semonin facials are considered by many experts to be the best in the world. • Specially designed for the sensitive eye area, the Anne Semonin Eye Express Radiance Ice Cubes will transform your eyes, reducing the appearance of dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles. • The use of Marine Spring Water (a unique water drawn in Brittany from a natural reservoir) instead of regular water, a major base of any cosmetic formula, allows Anne Semonin to claim that 100% of its key formula ingredients are “active”. ometimes you just need to take time to switch off and chill out, to escape and treat yourself with a dose of luxury. My partner and I have enjoyed spa treatments before, but when we visited the Gulf Spa at the respected Gulf Hotel, we knew it was going to be unique. The Gulf Spa is self-proclaimed as ‘three floors of pure bliss and ultimate luxury where each detail has been meticulously taken care of to guarantee a memorable and unique experience’, and we cannot help but to agree. As we walked into the reception area we were greeted with a
warm welcome from the staff and a glass of refreshing detox water was handed to us. A quick check of our booking and a consultation form to register our personal details before our lovely therapist showed up to escort us to the famous couple’s room on the first floor. The place is an oasis of tranquility. Soothing music was piped out and all the rooms were dimly lit and projected a relaxing aura, and that beautiful scent in the air really added to the comforting atmosphere. The door opens to a Jacuzzi romantically decorated with rose petals and candles situated in the middle of the room which
immediately set the mood for a magical experience. Two therapy beds were positioned to the left of the spacious oasis. To the right hand side of the door, a relaxing area equipped with two long chairs and a dresser lay. This was noted as we sank into these at the end of our treatment where we further unwound and enjoyed a therapeutic cup of hot lemon tea with honey, alongside a plate of nutritious healthy cookies. In the other part of this spacious room - which is the largest of its kind on the island - a Tropical Shower, a sauna room, a toilet, an ice fountain and steam room with a collection of three different scents: refreshing icy peppermint, dreamy lavender, and aromatic orange. To enjoy these in-room facilities, make sure that you allow yourself time to spare in addition to your treatment (at least an hour), as it is
so much fun, yet, it retains a relaxing but romantic aura. Perfect for reigniting that courtship bond! As we drank in the facilities it’s important to add that we had been given the privacy to strip out of our clothes and slip into our complimentary fluffy dressing gowns, then, after a quick welcoming foot ritual, we were treat to an award-winning Natura Bisse aromatic massage and facial untying our knots from head-to-toe with a 15 minute introduction to the newcomer ‘Sound Therapy’ which makes uses of tibetian bowls. Wow, I believe my chakra was certainly calmed into the ultimate state of zen after such a tranquil experience! My partner said he would come back for an hour of that alone; a sound massage with Tibetan singing bowls placed on your body in certain positions then played to align with your body’s rhythm. This massage leads to deep relaxation and regenerates the body. Amazing! All I can say is, their therapists have magic hands; not only when massaging away all of your stress and tension, but also when applying their regenerating anti-ageing facial too. Well, it is no surprise as Natura Bisse products are renowned for their advantageous properties and the brand trains their therapists to master the power of touch, applying expert techniques massaging with their hands, facial contour exercises and sculpting rituals that induce relaxation, energy flow and ultimate well-being. One hour of lotions and potions, toners and creams later our skin looked instantaneously years younger, just like that. In fact, we were so impressed with the couple’s treatment at The Gulf Spa that we’ve already promised to return for Valentine’s Day, although it’s important to note that this will make a fabulous gift for any occasion! SHOCK AND SQUAT
Our New Year’s resolution this 2020 comes in the form of Electrical Muscle Stimulation at DESSANGE Bahrain’s renowned energetic health club.
y torso, arms, legs and glutes are strapped up tight in water-soaked fabric and a vest, to which various wires are plugged in. Next, a bigger cable is plugged into my bodysuit, connecting to an electrical stand with a small screen. I nervously watch as the machine whirrs into life. From there, I spent the next 20 minutes being mildly electrocuted, all in the name of getting fitter, stronger and leaner. This is Electrical Muscle Stimulation - or EMS - training. It’s not new, but over the past few months it’s seen a resurgence. I’m at Dessange, Adliya about to experience what some people claim is the most efficient way to workout. The idea is that a 20 minute EMS workout is more effective than a gym session that would last about an hour. Sounds too good to be true, right? In a 20 minute EMS session, you do about ten different exercises such as squats, lunges and standing ab crunches, all whilst electrical impulses flood your body. A personal trainer is on-hand the whole time, turning the levels up and down. As workouts go, it’s bizarre, especially the first time. Because you’re not moving that much and the movements you do do are slow, you don’t feel like you’re working that hard. That said, when the level gets turned up, it sure is different, and I certainly left a bit sweaty. Some of the workouts are tougher than others, depending on how hard your trainer would push you based upon what you’re wanting to achieve - and I wanted to start on an all-or-nothing approach which made for a memorable initial session where it ached to sit down for three days afterwards. THREE DAYS! No pain, no gain. It seems too good to be true, but the science behind EMS training makes sense. The electrical impulses activate muscles you might not normally engage, and when combined with deliberate muscle tension without bearing any weight, it works muscles extra hard, but safely. More muscle fibres are activated than would be during a regular workout - including ones you can’t even feel or control - and all major muscle groups are worked at the same time. Essentially, you’re getting an extra intense workout in a short amount of time, whilst moving less. Win-win, right? Of course when it comes down to it, you want to see results, be that fat loss, muscle gain or simply improving tone.
“Essentially, you’re getting an extra intense workout in a short amount of time, whilst moving less. Win-win, right?” It’s incredibly convenient as you don’t need any kit - you’re given extremely fetching black stretchy leggings and a top to wear under the wired-up suit - and 20 minutes is easy to fit into your daily routine. The cheapest way to pay is to buy in bulk, however ,there are a range of packages available for everyone - regardless of your budget. However, if you are committed to getting fitter and are struggling to fit workouts into your week, EMS training is the answer. @dessangebahrain www.ohlala-magazine.com

hair follicles, further leading to hair loss and thinning. Cleansing the scalp regularly can clear blockages and help hair grow better. All the same, cleansing too often can strip the skin of natural oils, causing the scalp to become dry and triggering the sebum or oil glands to produce more oil. Strike a balance by picking hair care products that work for your hair type and build a routine that works for your lifestyle. For example, if you lead an active lifestyle and must shampoo every day, pick a mild cleanser. If you can go without shampooing every day but still feel the need to freshen up between washes, use a dry shampoo. When choosing hair care products, go for those with natural ingredients or mild ones and try to keep away from harsh chemicals. Don’t be afraid to mix brands as long as you’re not using anything that’s damaging for your scalp and hair health. Remember to use a shampoo that’s slightly acidic as one with a basic pH level will neutralise the natural acidity of the scalp, damaging scalp health. Additionally, massage the scalp regularly to stimulate blood circulation. This will help channel more nutrients to hair roots and follicles, improving the growth and quality of hair. Scalp massages also help relieve anxiety and stress which are known to cause hair fall.
LUSCIOUS LOCKS The secret to healthy hair is taking care of your tresses the right way. Here are some tips that we can all benefit from. #1 Take care of the scalp
The scalp or the skin covering the head is like the skin on the body, but with a greater number of large, terminal hair follicles. Diet and nutrition, hygiene practices, type and usage of hair care products, etc. affect scalp health, growth of follicular units and hair. Start with keeping the scalp clean to avoid build-up of natural oil or sebum, which can otherwise cause dandruff and clog 50
Your scalp as well as hair strands need to stay moisturised, hydrated, and nourished. Use a shampoo that’s moisturising or follow up your shampoo with conditioner. Remember to not use conditioner on the scalp. Hair care products containing natural oils like olive or coconut or ingredients like glycerine or shea butter are your best bet at keeping moisture locked in. Products like leave-in conditioners and deep hydrating treatments can be used once or twice a week depending on your scalp and hair type.
#3 Prevent hair breakage
Treat hair gently to avoid breakage and hair fall – detangle hair before shampooing and avoid combing hair when wet. Brushing or combing can disrupt the hair cuticle, stretching it and causing breakage, so avoid the activity, indulging in it only when you need to style your tresses. Choose your comb or brush wisely – go for a wide-toothed non-static comb or a boar bristle brush that will minimise breakage, reduce frizz, and work to distribute natural oils evenly across the scalp and hair shafts. Frequent use of hair ties and clips that are too tight can make roots weak and cause hair fall. Note that friction caused to hair while you sleep also damages the strands and leads to breakage. Tie your hair in a loose braid or use a bonnet or hair cap. You can also switch your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one.

Beauty Chatterbox Tell us a little bit about yourself. Born and raised in the Philippines, I moved to The Middle East after completing my BSBA in Marketing Management from Enderun Colleges, Philippines. During my course, I had the amazing opportunity to work as a Marketing Intern at The Apparel Group, a global fashion and lifestyle retail brand. This internship was my introduction to the world of luxury beauty brands. I attended exclusive events and participate in projects and social media activations that were an eye-opener for me. I then took my newfound passion for everything beauty and fashion when I joined The Qode family in 2018. I currently work on a wide portfolio of clients including the likes of global brands such as Sephora, Kendo, MCM Worldwide, and some F&B and hospitality brands including Katsuya by Starck, Address Sky View and more. Every day at The Qode is a new adventure and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of this family! Explain why you love working in PR. What does PR mean to you? PR to me is being able to show the public the right messaging about a product or launch through timely and effective communication whilst also creating the right ‘buzz’ and being able to get the key message out there in the right medium – which is personally what I love the most about being in the PR industry. It is more than just announcing a company’s latest news - PR is about leveraging communications strategies to establish a market position within the industry and in the minds of the press, bloggers, influencers, etc. PR has multiple vehicles and it’s exciting to use a different creative approach with every new client. What sorts of work and clients at The Qode do you find the most interesting when it comes to beauty? I work with a great mix of hospitality, fashion and beauty clients but I have to say I have an affinity for beauty PR in particular. Sephora Middle East and KENDO are both very highly renowned companies in the beauty industry and working with them every day is such a great learning experience. I get to learn from the biggest, world-class high-end luxury brands that produce such great beauty products and launches for their consumers – it’s beyond exciting!
How important is routine to you? Following a routine is key, but I do love surprises when it comes to work. Following a routine allows me to have a benchmark of how strategies, key messaging and launches are carried out successfully. That has been one of the biggest things I have learned under the mentorship of managers and directors at The Qode - spontaneity is bountiful when working with a team with great PR experience. We love the inside scoop, so, when you’re responding to media and public inquiries, what question do you find most difficult to answer? It is when you know what’s happening next and you just have to be able to work around not saying a word about it. Whether it be an up-and-coming launch or big news – it’s difficult to contain the excitement sometimes but you’ve got to do it. What’s the difference between public relations and advertising? People who aren’t working in public relations or advertising may not be familiar with what sets the two fields apart. While both are meant to help brands thrive to get their core message across to people, each have different methods and vehicles. PR is achieved largely through earned media - that means helping build brand reputation organically. Advertising on the other hand helps support the brand by reiterating core brand messages, that help people recognize the brand and its key messages and benefits. Tell us about your #1 beauty hack. As I have extremely dry skin, I always make sure that I apply a tiny bit of cold pressed coconut oil around my face before I go for a full face of make-up, this also makes your skin avoid having that ‘flaky’ look and I just love how alive my skin feels after! Cold pressed Coconut oil is also a really good natural moisturiser for your skin. What is your favorite product in your beauty bag that you couldn’t live without? My go-to product from Sephora right now would be the Pro Filtr Soft Silk Primer and the Pro Filtr Hydrating foundation from Fenty Beauty – these two products are what I am obsessing over at the moment.

BAHRAIN’S BEST CITY CENTREPIECE Neighbouring the fashionable shopping destination lies The Westin City Centre Bahrain, showcasing itself as the city’s most prestigious address, with an array of opulent treats around every corner allowing for a mesmerising staycation. Ohlala spends a relaxing couple of nights at this 5-star destination. The interior of The Westin City Centre Bahrain is sumptuous and modern with lavish crushed velvet fabrics adorning cushions and an array of carefully crafted furniture. Throughout the hotel different levels and styles of illumination create an air of extravagance in the entertaining spaces and tranquillity and intimacy in the lounge areas. The décor is a clever blend of polished woods, tiles, panelling and ornate chandeliers. The cutting-edge contemporary design is executed perfectly to create a sense of luxuriant escapism. This sense of splendour struck us immediately as our car was 72
whisked away by valet. We entered and were offered a refreshingly fruity trio of welcome drinks which resembled a heavenly elixir to kick start our staycation experience. The hotel takes a holistic, bespoke approach towards guests’ wellbeing which was evident as we checked in smoothly and sashayed to our Executive Room. The platter of treats presented to us reflected the attention to detail and personal knowledge of every guest. Chocolates of all kinds satisfy our sweet tooth! The in-room amenities ensure that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure. Generously
REGIONAL Escapes designed, the room features modern furnishings, rich textures and subtle hues and is available with twin or king size beds. Promising a high degree of subtle sophistication, the rooms here are a perfect retreat for the business or leisure traveller. Warm colour schemes and understated decorative accents help soothe mind, body and soul. The highlight of any visit to The Westin is the Heavenly Bed which has a reputation that truly proceeds it. Aside from this, the ambient lighting, crisp tiled edges in the heavenly bathroom and thoughtfully selected accessories from the signature White Tea range are designed to create a sense of mindfulness and bodhi whilst ensuring that all necessary links with the outside world are at hand should you require them. The team at The Westin make a conscious effort to create a home away from home. Our reluctance to leave such a haven drew us to ordering room service for dinner – and what a meal it was. The Beef Bresaola was thin juicy slices of meat, topped with fresh salad faves like tomato, lettuce and arugula. Delicious! The Tom Yum soup was one of the best we’ve tasted in a long time, with no skimping on the prawns. Whilst the seafood mixed grill was a smoky, tender affair that we couldn’t get enough of. All of the menus at The Westin are filled with superfoods which creates vitality and wellbeing through their philosophy of food synergy – pairing certain foods to increase their health-giving benefits. The hotel services and ethos also extend to business clientele through the state-of-the-art meeting and function rooms. Whether it be a board meeting or large catered event the team are able to offer the same bespoke service as they would in any other area of the hotel and can guarantee ‘clutter free’ meetings with state-of-the-art audio-visual support. Following a meander by the outdoor pool, taking in the sun deck, comfy sofas and pristine white towels on offer to all guests, we eagerly made our way to the popular Heavenly Spa for a facial and Heavenly Spa Signature Massage. Once inside the soothing aromas and soft lighting immediately had a calming effect as we changed into warm fluffy robes and arranged
ourselves on loungers in the relaxation zone. The treatment began with a cleansing detox water. The facial involved cleansing and exfoliating treatments preceding the signature massage. The masseuse expertly sought out every knotted fibre and stress point with no direction from us. Her techniques had the effect of a car journey on a small baby, lulling us into a meditative sleep. The overall two-hour experience passed by too quickly! As we emerged from the dosing state, the excitement continued at the prospect of dining in the renowned Furn Bistro that evening. It is refreshing to have a flagship restaurant within such an auspicious venue serving high end Khaleeji cuisine as opposed to favouring the flavours of other nations. The bakery churns out expertly crafted Sambusak and Manakish whilst also paying homage to pastry staples such as croissants and strudel. Wishing to stretch our culinary boundaries, we decided to try the salmon recommended by my knowledgeable and welcoming host. The platter was returned to the kitchen almost as clean as it had been before service – not a single morsel left. We have since struggled to think of a fish dish which has impressed us as much throughout our various dining experiences. Praise indeed. I am sure there is no need to comment upon how well we slept however to coin a phrase, it was ‘Heavenly’! As technology speeds up the pace of life and each of us has unique stresses and strains dictated by individual circumstances, we all search for a means of escaping and space to ‘reboot’. The ‘heavenly’ sanctuary created within The Westin City Centre Bahrain alleviates any negativity and elevates every mood. Whether you are seeking a business hub, a sumptuous family lodging or a luxurious space in which to mix and mingle with friends The Westin City Centre Bahrain will cater to your every need and you will leave walking a little taller, smiling a little wider, skin glowing a little brighter and ready to take on the Bahrain bustle once again. “This ensures that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure.”
Island Culture We couldn’t help ourselves from heading to VIOLA Bahrain as soon as we heard the tastiest Afro Caribbean inspired dishes had arrived at our shores.
ibrancy and vivacious warmth are intrinsic parts of Caribbean culture. The food scene is dominated by zesty flavours which emanate from this mixing pot and Viola has gone to extreme lengths to ensure that this is transposed perfectly. ‘Viola’ literally means Violet and the name is often associated with an appealing, passionate, talented heroine. As you enter, you begin to move to a different rhythm, that of the syncopated patois manner of speech, relaxed and colourful. The bold frescos are stunning. Afro-Caribbean ladies in traditional dress watch over the ‘patter’ of diners below. They were hand painted by French artist Mary-Lou who has deep connections to the Viola story. The subdued lighting reflect Caribbean evenings as the sun goes down and the partying is ramped up. The seating is reminiscent of a vast porch giving the feeling of outdoors, indoors, with a mix of sofas, high stools and patio chairs scattered with cushions upholstered in ethnic prints and tones. The distressed plasterwork on the walls further adds to the tropical vibe. Behind the bar is a meticulously crafted mosaic, which draws from the elements of the décor within the venue, including marble from the countertops and the same natural oaks which deck the venue throughout.
“They were hand painted by French artist Mary-Lou who has deep connections to the Viola story.” Surrounded by the waters of the Caribbean Sea seafood is a staple but rearing livestock and cultivating exotic vegetables means that the menu at Viola is the ultimate ‘Surf and Turf‘ experience. The Something Fishy theme every Tuesday capitalises on the wealth of seafood dishes which typify Caribbean cuisine. California rolls, ceviche and luscious, juicy prawns are but a few of the highlights. The crumbed calamari infused with flavours of cayenne pepper and presented with a creamy, garlic aioli dip are tender and tantalise the taste buds. Combined with the satisfying citrus ceviche and tempura prawns, the quality of the ingredients shine through. 76
In addition to the punchy presentation of the dishes, the ambience is amplified through the use of quirky drinking vessels, making the elixirs and fruity blends a spectacle as well as a refreshing change. The themed menu can be sampled alone or with a drinks package which complements the array of dishes perfectly. No dish is more evocative of the Caribbean style of cuisine than the goat curry, which is how we were able to justify our actions of exploring outside of the Something Fishy menu. Everything was unbelievably impressive that we were hungry for more, irrespective of our expanding waistlines. The depth of flavours is incredibly sophisticated, despite this being classed as a ‘homely’ dish from Dominica. Churrasco Beef Skewers and the decadent and moreish guacamole stuffed onion rings, accompanied with a creamy cheese sauce, are stand out dishes because of the unique flavours. This menu takes diners on a cruise through the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and it’s abundance of produce before hitting land with some of the best staple dishes which typify the heritage and culture of each nation that makes up this magnificent region. Dessert is doused in yet more flavours and textures of the islands. Melon, berries, pecan nuts and an additional little kick in the form of ice cream flavoured with an island staple. The perfect conclusion to our tropical tale. @violabahrain / violabh.com

THE PORSCHE 911 2020 4S CARRERA COUPÉ
THE PORSCHE 911 FAMILY WELCOMES A NEW MEMBER TO ITS EIGHTH GENERATION.
henever we at Ohlala find out that Porsche Centre Bahrain has received a new model for us to test drive, we can hardly wait to get behind the wheel. This was certainly the case when we learned of the new Porsche 911 2020 4S Carrera Coupé’s entry into the Kingdom. Being the avid Porsche enthusiasts that we are, we knew we were in for a serious treat with this new member of the automobile royal family. As soon as the Carrera Coupé came into view we had to pause to take in the sheer beauty of this machine. Although the overall exterior design is instantly recognisable as a 911, it was immediately obvious that subtle yet noticeable improvements have been introduced with this 2020 model. To begin with, all of the flowing body lines have been enhanced giving this Carrera a wider appearance to its predecessors. The width has been accentuated by the thick black grilles located both at the front and at the rear, both of which run the full breadth of the vehicle. The bonnet too looks to be slightly larger, sharper and wider, complimented by shapely air vents located underneath, that automatically open and close when required. The fog and daytime running lights are present in the form of LED strips that look uber modern and add to the sleek look of the exterior.
A novel feature of the flanks are the tucked in, electronic handles on the two doors that pop out when you unlock or place your hand next to them. 20-inch, high performance wheels are located on the front axle with 21-inch versions located on the rear axle. At the rear end, with its wide hips, the tail lights spread across the entire width of the vehicle, whilst the raised silver Porsche 911 lettering adds yet another touch of class. The stylish spoiler lies flat until it raises up automatically at a certain speed or manually at the touch of a button. The back glass extends to the very top of the 911, whilst a third brake light buried in the vents by the engine bay, adds another unique feature. Once inside the cockpit, it was clear that the class of the 911’s exterior flowed into the interior. All materials, finishing and trimmings used are of premium quality as is expected of any vehicle bearing the Porsche crest. The infotainment system includes a 10.9-inch touchscreen display, comprehensive connectivity and innovative assistance systems. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable and provided the driver with an optimal driving position. The rear seating area is significantly smaller than the front, however it is perfect for children, making this vehicle practical for everyday family use. These rear seats can be folded down to provide some internal storage space when required. This being a rearengine designed vehicle, the boot is located under the hood and this space provided allows you to store one decent sized item of luggage. Once we were out on the tarmac, the fun really began. This new 992 redesigned Porsche 911 boasts a 3.0 litre, six-cylinder boxer engine with bi-turbo charging that generates 450hp. Power transmission is handled by the new eight-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK). www.ohlala-magazine.com
“The Wet mode is all new for the 992 series and works through sensors in the wheel wells that listen to the road conditions and can sense when it is wet outside. This provides the 2020 model a top speed of 306 km/h and allows it to bullet from 0 - 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds! That’s the fastest ever from a 911. 330-millimetre brake disks with four-piston monobloc fixed callipers provide the stopping power and help one to keep full control of the vehicle. The handling of the 2020 model has been enhanced since previous models and the car stayed glued to the road even on even the sharpest of corners. You have the option of five different driving modes including Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual and Wet. The Wet mode is all new for the 992 series and works through sensors in the wheel wells that listen to the road conditions and can sense when it is wet outside. The GT style steering wheel felt perfect in hand throughout and gave us a hint of how racing drivers must feel when applying their trade. A host of high-end safety features and cameras help to ensure that you and your passengers always arrive safely at your desired destination. All-in-all this was perhaps the fastest sports car we have had the privilege of experiencing, but it was the comfortability factor, flawless performance and overall sense of control that really made this new 911 stand out from all the rest. 86

Raoul Dufy a French Painter described Blue as, “the only colour which maintains its own character in all its tones, it will always stay blue.” The Pantone Colour of 2020, Classic Blue is both evocative, constant, loyal, enduring and a symbol of confidence. The colour represents so many elements of daily life and iconic images, which both inspire and comfort us. Blue skies represent the best of times and very few of us can deny that waking up to a flawless, cloudless sky changes your mindset completely. Sparkling blue, crystal clear waters, are alluring and intoxicating. They draw travellers to destinations such as the promenades and bays of The Cote d’Azur, the Halkidiki peninsula, where it’s fingers are caressed by the waters of the Aegean sea or the Costas, which are kissed by the tides of the Mediterranean. I am fairly certain that as you read each of these descriptions the image you conjured was dominated by the colour blue, with no discernible division between sea and sky on the horizon. Despite blue being used in emotional terms to describe something cold or sad, in these terms it represents the epitome of warmth and escapism. It is undeniably a colour which is not limited by dimensions, as Yves Klein proclaimed, it is beyond the constraints of dimensions and can be used to great effect in every element of design. Despite representing the male form in many cultures, it is a colour which is gender neutral, highlighting the best of the male and female forms equally. It has softer edges than black yet still retains a sense of professionalism and authority and can act as the perfect chaperone for any of the more vivid shades employed by fabricants. The new year will be dominated by a colour which has a limitless sense of identity. From something as magical as a blue moon, to pure escapism in the blue of Greek tavernas and shuttered chateaus. In the words of Madonna, “True Blue, baby I love you.”
