EDITOR’S LETTER Happy New Year, everyone! Making New Year’s resolutions is a tradition that I for one like to uphold. Every year I pick out a few things to work on and I write out my resolutions on paper, frame them and place them in a spot where i can revisit them everyday. My bedside cabinet has been selected this year to provide refuge to such a list. Having that constant visual reminder helps me to stick to my goals throughout the year and I recently looked back on my resolutions from last year. I think I did a pretty good job with my 2017 goals using this particular visual mantra. In 2017, my goals included sending more thank you notes and making an effort to plan dinner with my friends at least once a week. In 2016, I vowed to drink more water and be more punctual (I’m still dehydrated regardless of my social life being thirsty work). And in 2015, I had a whole long list of resolutions that aren’t worth thinking about… home box dip-dye being amongst said list still tarnishes my mind. But this year I have just one resolution that I’m really trying to stick to and I think we could all benefit as such. My 2018 New Year’s resolution is to stop procrastinating. It’s my worst habit. When I get really busy, things like unanswered emails, fast approaching deadlines and even everyday to-do lists really pile up. Behind the seductive lure of “New Year, New You” lies a mistake, the idea that what we require, in order finally to change, is one last push of willpower. Well, we can all do ‘it’ and if you don’t, well, don’t procrastinate over it just simply get on with it and clear your mind. A Piece of cake...right?

W

hen your father Edoardo Caovilla first started making shoes, the focus was on couture and craftsmanship. Tell us why this is imperative to the Caovilla DNA. He was a dreamer and after the First and Second World War everything was dark and sad, so, he wanted to give elegance and colour to his creations. He wanted to combine craftsmanship and haute couture to give a touch of extreme elegance. In this way the shoes become real jewels and gems. What was the inspiration behind the Fall Winter 2017 collection design, and what does it represent? A dip into the past revisited for a contemporary woman, different inspirations for different iconic shapes. The luxurious opulence of mink; full, rich and sensuous which further creates desire and satisfaction to the touch. In high contrast to sparkling crystals, the glamorous couple form a perfect Yin and Yang balance. René Caovilla’s creativity translates into exquisitely crafted shoes with an impeccable fit designed and developed for contemporary women, who are aware of their strength, beauty and uniqueness. In your Fall Winter 2017-2018 campaign we see Sicilian model Giulia Maenza revealing different traits of her personality by posing with different attitudes. This is exalted by the selection of eight René Caovilla high-end footwear creations, all coming in a chic black tone. Why have you chosen this elegant and sophisticated, yet effortless approach? The choice of doing our Fall Winter campaign had the purpose of showing the new contemporary and sophisticated Caovilla woman. Giulia Maenza is a young Italian model that represents our sophistication with her beauty perfectly. The renowned photographer ‘Giampaolo Sgura’ and stylist ‘Viviana Volpicella’ added to this Italian dream team with their vision and experience to translate into images the timeless beauty of our Brand.

Showcasing couture-like craftsmanship, the brand’s beautifully embellished designs will transform the simplest of outfits. Tell us about a time in which your brand has impacted someone positively? All the women wearing Caovilla Shoes are impacted positively! Many of our customers write us directly to say how proud they are when they wear one of our creation and how they feel special with a pair of Caovilla. Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Bella Hadid, Kylie Minogue and Rita Ora are some of the most known that appreciate our iconic product and wear them regularly for the embellishment, comfort and design. The list goes on. You are currently pioneering a significant project through which the stages of scouting and recruiting of young designers are the starting point, to showcase and convey the deepest values of René Caovilla shoe making art. Why do you feel that it is important to provide a platform for tomorrow’s aspiring shoe designers? I think it can be a springboard for a desire to highlight, spread and communicate René Caovilla’s love of luxurious and elegant footwear by supporting the talent of new generations. Thanks to this project they will have the great opportunity to work closely with the creative team and with the most skilled craftspeople in the footwear business. They will become involved in every stage of producing a René Caovilla collection and learning the dynamics that underpin the success of a business rooted in the industrial fabric of the Italian footwear sector. Tell us more about the craftsmanship of René Caovilla shoes, and how long it takes for an artisan to finish a pair. We need more or less a week. How do you source your artisans and are there any strict guidelines that they need to follow to allow the shoes to be stocked in store and maintain such a leading-edge quality control? As Aristotle used to say “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” Habits which we have been following for three generations. Our craftsmen rely on these secrets and help us to improve them. Are there any outside influences that inspire your designs other than Venetian artistry to allow the final design to ‘become the expression of a dream’? Venice has always had and still has a great bearing on my knowledge, education and expression. Everyone goes to Venice and there’s a great deal of art exhibitions which take place in Venice influencing me. I was most certainly lucky and honored to be living in Venice.

I hope to be able to take the company to the awareness which it deserves. It’s not a product for everyone and I’d like its style, consistency and quality to be more and more aspirational. Are you open to a collaboration with any other brands? We had some interesting collaborations in the past but nowadays we prefer to be focused on our growth and we want to strengthen our brand identity. If you had to summarise the DNA of René Caovilla today would you say that it has had to adapt, due to the evolving preferences of consumers? The DNA of Caovilla is summarised in Venice, our city and iconic inspiration, Caovilla is an incomparable heritage of three generations. When compared to other brands, Caovilla, is the only one directly liaising to the beauty of Venice. Craftmanship is a core component because every single shoe is handmade by our artisans and has been in our factory since 1929. Caovilla creates couture shoes with handmade craftsmanship and unparalleled excellence. We at Caovilla play the subtle game of transforming iconic shapes into a new desirable classic whilst all of our shoes are completely handmade in Italy. Quality is also imperative to the Caovilla DNA as it is a brand of cultured luxury that prioritises the care of details, the quality and it continuously grows with its own style, satisfying the preferences of our global customers. When you start to design your next pair of shoes do you have a select target audience or canvas in mind? What changes is the message our customer aims to deliver in that moment, not the energy and dedication with which this shall be delivered. Tell us a fun fact that we may not know about either yourself or the creation of your shoes? The shoes materialise themselves as I’m waking up. When I’m thinking about the creation process of a certain shoe during the evening I often happen to see it when waking up! That is the reason why I usually go to the office so early. I tried what I would call ‘a natural facelift’ for the first time. Like many women who have to juggle work, social responsibilities and a family life, I barely have time to take care of myself. I use make-up remover and day and night creams for my face and that’s about it. Maybe a facial mask or an exfoliating scrub once in a blue moon. Only one year ago that The Gulf Hotel have decided to add a five stars SPA to its extended range of outstanding services. We visited the luxurious property for a couple’s treatment and we did not want to leave! Not having to enter the hotel in order to reach the Gulf SPA, we drove to the parking lot opposite to the entrance through the second gate that takes you to the conference centre. 38

We immerged to the reception to a warm welcome from the staff and the festive Christmas decoration. A quick double check on our booking and up to the first floor; we spend few minutes with another lady receptionist to register our personnel details while sipping on a cup of a cold detox water. And here is one of the talented two therapists that will apply our treatment coming out to meet us and escort us to the couple’s treatment room. What a vast space a luxury indulgence! two therapy beds to the left, a jaccuzi tub in the middle of the room decorated with rose petals and candles spreading a romantic vibe. To the right hand side of the door, a waiting area equipped with two long chairs and a dresser on which we enjoyed a therapeutic cup of hot green tea with honey along with a plate of healthy cookies. In the other part of this spacious room which is the biggest of its kind on the island, a toilet, a jungle inspired shower, and a steam room with a collection of three different scents: refreshing icy peppermint, dreamy lavender, and aromatic orange. To enjoy these in-room facilities, make sure you spare an hour of your time, it is too much fun and listen to me when I tell you: keep your husband away from the huge ice bucket :) We booked one hour of massage and it is time to start! we have been given the privacy to strip out of out close and slip into the chunky bath robes, then, the therapists kindly rinsed our feet with warm water and a magical powder that carries the aroma of one thousand roses; this will definitely make a fabulous gift for any occasion! The massage was nothing less than magical and we both agreed that both therapists were extremely good and professional. I wished to have it soft with a concentration on the legs and arms to take away the fatigue and I was 100% satisfied. As cliché as it sounds, there has never been a better time to overhaul your beauty habits, Angela Beitz reveals the best things you can add to your regime PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Its so tempting to tan and who doesn’t love the sunshine but you really need to constantly protect your skin from the fierce rays. Hyperpigmentation, uneven skin-tone and skin cancer are all common problems that too much sun exposure can cause. It’s imperative to wear sunscreen daily (at least 50+). Don’t forget the back of your hands, arms and legs and your neck. It’s the cheapest and most effective anti-ageing product you’ll ever use.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

While trends are focusing on more made up looks with heavy make up, bold brows and lots on contouring, it’s also important to keep your look chic and simple. Over plucked eyebrows, caked on make-up and overdone hair looks so unnatural. Focus on one thing; a bright lip, a smoky eye or a gorgeous bronzed body. It’s so much better to let your natural beauty shine through rather than constantly over-doing it and your skin will certainly thank you for it.

BAT THOSE LASHES

Lashes are receiving a lot of focus in the beauty world at the moment so for an instant eye-brightener, reach for a fabulous new mascara. Getting your lashes tinted every month will also help you save time while doing your make up and flash lashes are even better for a big boost!

REPAIR YOUR HAIR

Nothing sucks the moisture out of hair like the water in The Gulf. Invest in good shampoos and conditioners that will moisturize your hair and use a deep conditioning treatment once or twice a week to boost shine and keep your locks in good condition.

LEARN WHAT SUITS YOU

It’s so important to find products that work for you. This goes for skincare, body care and hair care. Everyone is different, but I find in this region it’s best to use products that aren’t heavily perfumed and the more natural/organic products are the way to go. I feel heavily perfumed creams and moisturisers really clog your pores here due to the heat and humidity. It’s also common to use products that are too light aren’t giving you enough moisture or alternatively applying very rich creams which are too much for your skin, making it oily.

LAYER YOUR SKINCARE

As we age our skin loses collagen and moisture so a simple cream just doesn’t cut it anymore. Serums are such an important aspect of your skincare regime and I even like to layer two different ones under my moisturisers. They are perfect for plumping out the skin, fixing pigmentation and preventing ageing depending on your skin needs. Follow up with a night cream and eye cream for night and for day use serum also with eye cream again and a moisturiser with and SPF. www.ohlala-magazine.com

How did it all begin? The brand started in Melbourne in 1987 and then in 2003, in an underground nook in the Melbourne bayside suburb of St Kilda, Aesop hosted our first in-store customers. The space once a narrow ramp descending into an underground car park – set the benchmark for future structural ambitions. So when it was proposed to craft the ceiling of Aesop Adelaide from 7560 amber glass bottles, few eyebrows were raised. Nor did we shy away from the architectural challenge of constructing a store with 400,000 sheets of reclaimed copies of The New York Times in New York’s Nolita, or using 3000 cardboard boxes – the kind used to ship our products – in the assemblage of Aesop Flinders Lane.

As a chief defining feature to a face, nicely shaped brows are vital to make a major beauty impact. As such, all of Suman Jalaf ’s treatments start with a thorough brow analysis to identify suitable shape and best treatment process to achieve it. Jalaf has crafted her unique approach and treatment methodology and as she has mentioned previously in an interview: “Brows are bespoke, thus you can’t apply the same approach to everyone”. Microblading is the treatment du jour, a remarkable technique that transforms once rebellious brows into polished, preened, perfect arches that frame the face and lift the face. Perfect eyebrows are an absolute must and microblading – or eyebrow embroidery as Suman calls it is fast becoming the go-to beauty treatment thanks to the little downtime and low maintenance finish. The Microblading method adopted by Suman is a hybrid of learnings so it’s truly unique. First the ‘brow architecture’ is measured and analysed with a Brow Ruler to ensure the perfect size width, depth and shape is achieved, Suman also considers face shape, features and hair type and growth patterns. The area is then numbed using a light cream, before Suman begins the process. Using delicate strokes the hand held micro needles manually implant featherweight strokes with a medical grade approved pigmented colour into the epidermis layer of the skin. The overall effect is fuller, thicker more voluminous brows with the final pigment settling 10 days after application. There is no downtime with the treatment but a follow up appointment is required six to eight weeks after to simply top-up to ensure the desired look has been created. The end result? Soft, flawless and naturally beautiful eyebrows with a shape bespoke to each face, with long lasting results of up to 18 months. TROPICAL PARADISE Looking for the ultimate esacape to get away from it all? Angela Beitz checks into Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in Sri Lanka to find just that. Sri Lanka is well known for its relaxed vibe, delicious food and beautiful beaches. This relaxing paradise is on the doorstep to GGC dwellers and luxury hotel brand, Anatara has opened multiple properties on the island over the last few years. Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle is located on the coast close to the southern end of Sri Lanka and the resort sits at the back of a crescent of sandy beach enclosed by granite arms at either end. To the east, beaches scallop the coastline all the way to the backpacker hangout of Tangalle, a couple of kilometres away. The scenery is quite simply, breathtaking. Everything is veiled in dense greenery and there are 66

plenty of stunning tropical flowers about. This is the only resort hotel of this calibre on this part of the coast. Since most travellers are on a clockwise journey through the country, this hotel makes a perfect choice to relax and recover after a trip through, the tea country and many other attractions. The resort is large and feels quite majestic upon arrival, taking its design cues from the traditional Sri Lankan plantation house, and the hotel looks out onto the large pool and beach. At the upper end is the reception area and in front, poised on a headland, the resort’s Italian fine-diner, Il Mare. A meal here is not to be missed and the view don’t get any better.

TRAVEL Escapes The rooms are elegant spacious and feature well-equipped bathrooms with all the amenities you could need, a gorgeous bath tub, decadent furnishings and a Nespresso machine along with Sri Lankan teas. Cleverly, rooms are all seaward facing, those on the upper floors get a big balcony, a patio for those on ground level. Guest rooms are also located as separate villas featuring their own pools with lawn and the palms of the former coconut plantation separating them from the beach. Peacocks wander around the grounds and the gardens are lush and impressive. At 150 rooms, the resort is big enough to have a good array of facilities but not overwhelming. You certainly won’t go hungry here and breakfast is a really stand out. Catering to all tastes, breakfast is a decdent array of freshness and goodness including fresh smoothies and juices. A standout dish is the egg hoppers, a Sri Lankan specialty, a paper thin, conical pancake with an egg at the bottom. Try it with local condiments and you won’t be sorry. Il Mare, the resort’s breezy Italian restaurant, glows by night and

the menu impresses with the local seafood and lots of delicious Italian fare such as pizza and pasta. If you are looking for something really special then you can’t go past Anantara’s Dinner by Design, a dinner for two, served in a curtained pavilions set among coconut palms with the waves just metres away, this will be an experience you won’t forget. If you can manage to pull yourself away from the water, there are plenty of things to do and see, all of which are easily arranged through the hotel by their attentive and friendly staff. You can take a day trip to the historic Galle Fort, or to one of the protected national parks, like Udawalawe to see elephants of all sizes, or to Yala to spot a leopard in its natural habitat. The region is famed for its tea, and their are plantations nearby to visit. If you are looking for a foodie experience, an absolute highlight is the hotel’s Spice Spoons tour. You’ll be accompanied by one of the resort’s head chefs to the local fish and vegetable markets, where you’ll pick out exactly what you’d like to eat. Once back at the hotel, you’ll learn how to prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes from scratch before enjoying a sumptuous feast of everything you’ve just cooked for lunch. The W is all about creating colour contrasts that stand out like a sore thumb and creates a real powerhouse of slick hospitality that is so fun to be a part of. The décor is stimulating in every way and amps up your energy from the outset. Everywhere you turn, there’s bold design – the hotel’s exterior is flashy (in a way that suits Dubai perfectly) with neon lighting, outlining the 33-storey building. THE DIGS Well, one thing’s for sure: you’ve never been in a more modern, high tech and aesthetically fun room before. It’s all about loud typographical messages i.e. EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW (aka the inroom guide book to room-service, Dubai information and more), SO VAIN (nail kit and shower cap), BARE ALL (shaving kit) and FRESH MOUTH (dental kit). skimp on quality – the black-carpeted rooms are massive and very Jetson space-age and you feel right at home when you walk in. We stay in the hotel’s Marvellous Room – and how fitting it is to the name! An open-plan space allows you to take complete charge of your rejuvenation and revitalisation destiny for a well-deserved staycation in the city. The signature W Bed is one of the biggest and definitely one of the comfiest we’ve had the pleasure of sleeping in! The compartmentalised rainshower and separate restroom add to the whole ‘many dimensions’ effect while the standalone bathtub adds an element of luxury to the open concept that calls out your inner voyeur. The fully-equipped mini bar, the sprawling flat screen and the white leather seating beside the bed help to create a great feeling of space and comfort all-in-one – gain, the stuff of a James Bond scene. A quick video tour of the room and even a picture of the amazing view overlooking Dubai Canal will make for the most like-worthy insta and snapchat stories. THE GRUB Epicurean pleasures, you say? Well, they’ve got all that and more at the W. We checked out Namu, the Japanese-Korean outlet which walked away with the award for Best Newcomer Casual Dining at the recent FACT Dining Awards Dubai. The menu may be more Korean than Japanese and encourages a sharing concept, meaning diners are able to try a number of dishes to really embrace the true flavour profiles of these two distinctive cuisines. Stripped of the usual conformity of fine dining, Namu embraces a casual approach with dishes arriving, as they’re ready, as opposed to following a strict regimented order. The menu is broken down into alluring sections, with appetisers that include Hokkaido (scallop, truffle soy, tenkatsu and sashimi kombu) and the Wagyu Tataki called the ‘Namu Impressions.’ But of course, we started off with Guro Edamame to whet our appetites before a true food feast. Highlights included the super refreshing Yuzu Hamachi Ceviche, which will blow away the taste buds of any raw food lover and the Namu Bibimbab, a classic Korean rice that mixes mountain vegetables with a free-range egg to bring a sweet and almost velvety nature to the dish. We cannot recommend this it enough. Mocktails were just as impressive: we went for the Amaririsu which means Shy and is made up of Yuzu, Passionfruit, and Tonic Water which was prickly sweet and washed down our amazing food nicely. on hazelnut, gourmet meat is usually hard to find around Bahrain. Premium meat cuts harvested from very young well raised livestock for your luxurious culinary indulgence are now only a drive away. Flames Steak & Seafood at ART Rotana Hotel boasts such luxurys in the man-made island of Amwaj, which ensure that it does not fall short of this deluxe task. The restaurant is an elegant space carved into intimate seating options. Your taste buds are intrigued straight from the entrance when your eyes meet the beautiful meat and seafood on display. Walking past the reception podium, the Bar Lounge unveils itself and is simply classy. One long grey sofa, coupled with cosy purple chairs, provide a unique seating arrangement; a great match of colours to go with the shiny, black marble tiles. Skipping the lounge, we headed straight to our table escorted by our lovely waiter. A wine display area colonised the middle space with the season’s celebratory vibe. An added bonus is the ability to purchase a bottle of wine if your palate desires. To the left of the entrance we peeked into the open kitchen to catch a glance over the delicious action taking place on the fire with the chef and kitchen staff welcoming our nosey looks with a smile.

Six pieces of fresh Oysters sprinkled with Chorizo and Spanish Cheese were perfectly cooked under the broiler, served with a wedge of lemon and a mini bottle of Tabasco. As I was seated I embraced this culinary experience in which I decided to try the Grilled Oysters. This is the second time I‘ve tried Oysters in my life and I must honestly say that I found this occasion incredibly enjoyable. The restaurant offers its diners the option to sit outside with a charming view of the hotel’s famous dancing fountain (weather permitting). The nearby Shisha Lounge can be your after dinner destination if that is your indulgence of choice Freshly baked bread was served to the table with the most delicious butter, but, to my surprise, the bread came alongside a house salad! What a great alternative to bread for all the ladies who worry about those extra unwelcomed calories. Starters began to pour onto the table one after the other. Ahi Tuna Sashimi Stack was one of the best fish tartar I have ever had the privilege of tasting. The Sea Scallops were brilliantly pan seared and served on a bed of green peas and bacon. The famous Seafood Chowder took centre stage as the creamy delicious soup presented in country bread boule, very nice and extremely rich with a handful of mixed seafood proving itself as a strong contender for being a main course in itself. If you prefer a choice free from seafood, the Shiitake mushroom will make a great substitute. We chose to delve into our main courses without taking a break, alas, we did not have to wait long to be owed such a virtue. Here comes the daddy of all meats: 78

The Tomahawk Steak; Wow! The size was humongous yet such a pleasant view! This was an immense cut of meat with the entire rib bone retained to allow for a fabulous presentation. I kid you not, this piece of beef could easily feed three people. We were well treated with an array of sides from mash potatoes, fries and potato gratin along with both mushroom and pepper sauce, a couple of giant onion rings and some grilled cherry tomatoes on the vine in addition to a collection of fine quality mustard. All of this will be served at your table on a trolley and your waiter will help cut the brilliant piece of deviousness and seasons it perfectly veered towards your preference of taste. The chef insisted that we try the Angus Tenderloin from the United States and it was equally delicious albeit we were grateful for the smaller portion. Finally, we move from savoury to sweet with Donut Balls served with three different sauces of Chocolate, Strawberry, and Caramel. As if that wasn’t enough we were served a collection of Creme Brulee, Caramel Chocolate Bar, and a mini Carrot Cake with Cinnamon Ice cream. Thank you Flames Steak & Seafood for the most enjoyable steak experience ever, I truly enjoyed myself experiencing such a magnificent and unforgettable meal. s avid car enthusiasts and seasoned test drivers, we at Ohlala have the privilege of spending quality time behind some of the finest wheels on offer. Every once and a while however, we get to experience something truly magnificent, something a cut above the rest. Although our intentions are not to instil jealousy into the hearts’ of our readers, the following statement may achieve just that. This month, we travelled all the way to the UAE to experience the Ferrari 488 GTB and it was even better than we could have imagined. The Ferrari 488 Gran Turismo Berlinetta (GTB) marks a return to the classic Ferrari model and she looks fantastic! It would be a daunting challenge for any sports car manufacturer to produce such a flawless work of automobile art. It is obvious the exterior design is completely performance orientated, with highly efficient aerodynamics that still

manage to retain the pure lines synonymous with the Ferrari brand. The sculptural flanks are key to its character with the large signature air intake scallop divided into two sections by a splitter, paying homage to the original 308 GTB. A dual grille opening characterises the front of the vehicle which directs air into the two radiators. A double front spoiler is also present for aerodynamic reasons. The bonnet itself has a pronounced, raised central section and two side channels. These channels have two functions. The first is to make the car’s appearance sportier in nature and the second is to direct air from the two hidden vents in the bumper. A blown spoiler dominates the rear of the vehicle, along with the large air vents present to further improve aerodynamics. The new exhaust tailpipes add to the sense of power and performance exuded from this masterful creation. All in all, it would be extremely difficult to build a better looking vehicle. www.ohlala-magazine.com

DIVA Drives Carefully sliding into the cockpit styled interior, one immediately feels as if they are on the starting grid at a Formula One event. This motor vehicle offers nothing less than the perfect balance of style, quality, functionality and sportiness. The entire layout is driver orientated, ensuring every function of the vehicle is easily at hand and ready to be implemented. A new Sport infotainment system ensures the simple navigation of available features. Only the very finest of materials and craftsmanship can be seen in this sports car. After careful inspection we could not find one feature we would have altered or added. In truth, several articles could be written on the interior of this vehicle alone, but there is no substitute for the real experience.

Our first drive entailed a trip form Dubai to Ras Alkhaimah. This long and wide highway stretches for miles and we took advantage of the space to put her through her paces. The all-new 3902 cc V8 turbo engine is a scary beast. There is far too much power available to test on any road and we were hesitant to push her to even half of her capabilities. This speed machine goes from 0 – 100km/h in just three seconds and has a top speed of 330km/h! Fortunately, the carbon ceramic breaks are more than up to the task and the impeccable grip on offer ensures one is in control of the experience. Our next excursion was to the top of Jebel Jais Mountain. Considered one of the finest roads in the UAE, it was the perfect location to test the GTB’s handling abilities. If we were to provide one word to describe the experience, it would have to be, smooth. Every curve and feature of this car has been designed to ensure a perfect ride. This Ferrari is incredibly responsive and carves through the roads like a slalom skier carves through the snow. She feels light, powerful and capable. It was only once we exited the vehicle that we realised our cheeks ached from the permanent ear-to-ear smile this experience had provided. This car screams success and wealth. If you are someone looking for the ultimate sports car experience, you need not look any further than the Ferrari 488 GTB. 86

PURPLE

MISS OHLALA’S THOUGHTS OF PURPLE DO NOT CONJURE HEART-WARMING AND ROMANTIC CONNOTATIONS SUCH AS “ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE”. Just in case you missed it, which would be almost impossible, Pantone announced that Ultra Violet is their Colour of the Year 2018. According to Pantone, Ultra Violet “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” This surprises me, because when I think of wearing purple, what immediately springs to my mind is purple Bishops’ cassocks, cartoon wizard hats and blue rinses (being a mauve rinse on grey hair, traditionally popular with senior citizens in the UK). Leaving aside the blue rinse brigade, I may not be far off here, as colour experts say purple has a sense of mystique and royal qualities. Purple is said to represent meanings of devotion, dignity, magic, mystery, nobility, peace, power, pride, spirituality, wealth and wisdom. I understand purple was traditionally the colour of royalty, because historically, in order to dye garments that colour, it required the use of the small gland in a sea snail that lived in the waters off Phoenicia, making purple an expensive colour to make. Purple to me, however, does not scream high-end fashion and luxury furnishings. I am no shrinking violet, but this regal shade of purple seems a difficult colour to pull off well. You could nail this hue in a very sharp tailored dress or suit with little embellishments and minimalistic accessories, along the lines of recent runway looks from Gucci or Rochas. However, it you wear high street clothes using cheap violet, lavender or lilac dyes, then you are more likely to end up looking like a teenage girl or a Disney princess. I certainly don’t think I can pull off Ultra Violet lips or hair colour and I don’t think I can even get away with wearing it as a nail colour. I think I’ll leave purple hues to the likes of Selena Gomez and Rapunzel. It’s also not a colour that I want to see in my home fabrics and furnishings. Perhaps it might work in a velvet, statement chair in a boutique hotel 98

setting, but who wants the first thing they see when they come down in the morning to be a purple espresso maker? From a colour psychology perspective, apparently purple contributes to mental balance, stability and peace of mind, but I personally can’t think of anything more stressful than having a purple kitchen. #firstworldproblems It is said that having either purple or violet as your favourite colour means that you are sensitive and compassionate and put others before yourself... that is obviously why purple isn’t my favourite colour. I think purple should be retained for chocolate box packaging and my personal favourite chocolates, Rococo’s violet creams. Luckily for me, as I cannot bring myself to share these chocolates with anyone, most people think violet creams are revolting. The immortal words of Jenny Joseph’s poem “Warning” sums up how I feel about purple: “When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple”. In the meantime, let’s leave purple to legends such as Prince: “I never meant to cause you any sorrow / I never meant to cause you any pain / I only wanted to one time to see you laughing / I only wanted to see you / Laughing in the purple rain.”
