Editor’s Letter

t was on an enchanting, boutique-laden street of Paris one night during Fashion Week where Ingie Chalhoub was hosting a cocktail presentation of her Spring 2016 collection. In her airy new atelier, complete with aristocratically high ceilings, the Hawaiian themed collection was exotically sprinkled across the space with palm trees and polychrome sunset lighting. In and among the swamping crowds of leggy models, the media and VIP guests from around the world, was a spirited Ingie, engaged in animated chatter, wearing an A line dress from her collection, contouring her petite frame. It was hard to process that this super convivial woman had recently been ranked among the top 100 most powerful Arab women by Forbes Middle East. A heavyweight title like that could easily breed untouchable arrogance. Alas she gave me her precious time (the amount of arm tugging she got from everyone blew my mind) and spoke candidly about her rise in the fashion industry.

Her humble words are an inspiration to any woman who wants to dress real women. And while we scuttled from show to show, one that left a lasting impression on us was Andrew Gn. The Paris based Oriental designer consistently presents thoughtful runway shows rich in polychrome palettes and delicate embroidery. His SS16 collection celebrates the art of fashion and the relationship between the two. As with all catwalk reports come the beauty trends but sometimes we feel you need to go back to basics before you experiment with electric blue eye shadow and hot red lipstick. How often do we get our foundation wrong? We give you the latest tricks of the trade to getting it right.

In other news we also got our hands on the Rolls-Royce Wraith Inspired by Fashion and took it for a drive. What an exhilarating pleasure. Style Insight courses at Central Saint Martins in textiles and fashion design, in the evening as well as a course at the School for Creative Start Ups to launch my scarves,” she says. Noor’s debut collection of scarves is called Peace – a loaded notion in relation to her heritage no less.

Each scarf involves an infinite repetition of the geometric motif of the Arabic word ‘Salam’– made more vibrant through a combined creative process based on modernising arabesque and calligraphy and infusing them with western artistic influences. Each scarf is inspired by a famous quote on peace and thus “focuses on different ideas of peace: a personal quest, a pursuit between lovers, and a longing between nations.”

Motion, rhythm and depth are the key to Noor’s scarves. The medium of motion graphics stirred in her a desire to inject this rhythmic effect into her scarves by translating a flat surface into a sculptural object through being worn.

The production involves implementing modern mediums as well as a deeply historical technique to Noor’s culture. “For our digital collection we used the finest silk fabrics with state of the art printing technology,” which give that striking touch. The handmade collections see the fabric woven on a loom in the Chouf mountains in Lebanon – one of the last pillars of loom weaving in the country, which is on the brink of extinction but “it’s our desire to revive a dying craft because it’s a longstanding cultural heritage that is worth preserving, albeit by injecting it with a new breath of life, through the combination of a traditional craft with cutting edge technology in textile production.”

Born and raised in Lebanon, Noor moved to London nine years ago. Having gained a degree in graphic design from the American University of Beirut and worked in the Creative Department of a TV station before moving over to the BBC in London, Noor has always been surrounded by visual motion. While her day job involves crafting user experiences for the BBC news website as a senior designer, Noor planted a seed on the side which is now blossoming and taking shape.

he ideal accomplice in a woman’s life: enter the trapeze bag. It’s practical, bold, usually defined by an intense colour block and is the definition of timeless chic.

erge Cajfinger, the founder of Paule Ka, was born in Lille in 1955 and spent his childhood in Brazil. Returning to France in 1968 he opened his first multi-brand store in his hometown, which he named Paule Ka. Moving to Paris in 1987, Serge Cajfinger created the Ready-To-Wear brand under the same name, and opened the first Parisian Paule Ka boutique in the Marais. Inspired by the grace of the 50s and 60s, he sought to give a modern twist to the timeless elegance of the wardrobes of icons such as Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly. The brand’s style is geometric and simple, sophisticated yet urban, with a few must-haves like the perfect little black dress and handbags made with impeccable materials and detail. Serge Cajfinger’s work for Paule Ka plays upon charm more than seduction, and his distinguished and contemporary silhouettes have earned him the loyalty of a diverse clientele. Located since 2007 at 223 Rue Saint-Honoré, the fashion house Paule Ka continues its global development with the opening of boutiques in China and throughout Europe, as well as a flagship store and showroom in New York. To this day, Paule Ka is established in 57 countries and distributed throughout 475 points of sale, 60 of which are stand-alone stores dedicated exclusively to the brand in cities such as Paris, London, New-York, Dubai, Hong-Kong and Singapore.

Alithia Spuri-Zampetti is Italian-American and grew up between Rome and the United States before becoming Parisian by adoption.

I

have always looked at my mother as the person I wanted to be one day. She has

always been my reference in life; she had a great influence on me and directed me towards fashion. I have learned from her all the essential elements of this job: the importance of trying the clothes on, the painstaking attention to detail, the customer’s experience as a central focus.

As a young woman I had to be stronger and maybe more skilled than a man to enhance my credibility and my negotiating power. It might sound strange, but I think that there are more gender stereotypes in Europe than in the Middle East when it comes to work.

I have been lucky enough to meet with lots of extraordinary people who have been inspiring me with their examples; I could not ask for more than that. I have always tried to have open eyes and an open heart to learn from any single person who crossed my way.

I am a firm believer in the strength of women and I’m a great supporter of women’s empowerment.

Being featured in Forbes’ list of the most powerful Arab women is a great honour but I think that we should share this title with all our Arab Women as they are great examples of dedication, understanding, passion and power in the way they are finding their places in society and in the work field.

Despite hard work, passion and a strong vision you need to have the ability to look at something and know immediately whether it’s right or wrong.

I think the real strength of Ingie Paris is the fact that it is designed by a woman thinking about real women. I always keep in mind the structure of the body of a woman, the parts we all want to enhance and the ones that we prefer to hide, the cuts that shape the figure in the right way.

I always have in mind the bright colours and shades of the Middle East and I try to give life to them through the craftsmanship of the French artisans

I work with. It is really a double conversation between the East and West that happens in the creating phase; and it is actually my double background which unconsciously guides me in merging the two worlds.

I love art. I physically need it. Most of my collections are inspired by a single artist or by more than one. In my pre-fall 15 pieces, Sonia Delaunay and her geometrical patterns were the starting points for my exclusive prints; in the winter 15/16 collection, the collages of Matisse inspired my embroideries and all jacquard work on knitwear.

Looking at some hibiscus flowers one day, I was dreaming about white sand, flowers necklaces and the sound of waves. This Hawaiian nature got me inspired for summer 2016. I wanted those dreams to materialise onto my dresses so I developed an energetic collection with tropical colours, exclusive hibiscus embroideries and prints, relaxed but flattering cuts.

Summertime is when I recharge. It is only then that I can disconnect for a few weeks in order to refresh my mind and my body after a year spent in a plane between two (or more) cities. Having dinner at home with my family is the sweetest thing I can ask for.

The south of France is really close to my heart and it continuously inspires me: the clear blue sky, the vibrant sunlight, the infinite hues of the sea, the energetic green of its nature are just the perfect nourishment for creativity.

When you love what you do, there is nothing that can stop you. Always commit to excellence.

A history of elegance

Andrew Gn is luxury-loving.

Across the seasons his collections breathe sophistication, allure and edge. As the lights dimmed for the SS16 presentation at the Palais De Tokyo, the industrial, beige washed space had projections of purple and yellow laced butterflies on the walls. Before the official start, a gravelly, sombre voice opened the show: “Andrew Gn will not be coming out at the end.” Due to an emergency operation the designer was in recovery but that did not stop the raucous reception after each piece graced the catwalk. The final words of the ominous yet soothing voice were, “Andrew has worked on this collection until the last moment, with all his passion and determination” and it certainly showed.

The pulsing music as well as the two distinct aesthetics that came to life show Andrew’s versatility and ability to play. The first part of the SS16 collection conjures holidays. It evokes fresh sea air and summer, sun-kissed moments. Going away, from Deauville to Brittany and Biarritz, moving through a palette of blues, black and white. One then travels further to more distant countries. There is a strong hint of primitive geometric design in his SS16 collection.

The second part is inspired by a Chinese imperial porcelain bowl given to Andrew by his parents when he was 15 years old. This bowl has the most delicate paintings of butterflies, plants and flowers, which he transposed in prints and fine embroideries. It’s extremely colourful, joyful and quirky.

You’ll notice in the SS16 collection the use of denim done in the style of a linen shift dress, jumpsuit and a pea coat. It’s the epitome of freshness, cool play and rugged beauty.

Andrew Gn was born in Singapore in 1966, the youngest of three brothers and two sisters.

In 1986, Andrew enrolled in the renowned Saint Martins Schools of Art in London.

While majoring in Fashion Design at Saint Martins, Andrew won the FrenchConnection Award, sponsored by the English/French Chamber of Commerce, which was open to all the fashion colleges in the United Kingdom. Andrew also participated in the Design Exchange programme at Parsons School of Design for a term. He returned to Saint Martins to complete his Bachelor of Art degree in December 1989.

The following year, Andrew moved to Milan to attend the prestigious Domus Academy. There his professors included Romeo Gigli, Luciano Soprani, Anna Piaggi and Gianfranco Ferre. While studying, he freelanced for Ratti, a textile company, and for the fashion house Basile. After receiving his Masters of Art in 1992, Andrew accepted the offer to assist Emanuel Ungaro in Paris. In 1996, Andrew decided it was time to strike out on his own, launching the Andrew Gn collection which is mainly manufactured in France. There are many struggles that we dames face in life and my current drama is trying to look good at the gym.

Having never been a fan of exercise I had to get over that first before now facing the inevitable “what should I wear saga” before each class.

To make matters worse, it’s a simple fact that your gym will be brimming with attractive people looking at you judgmentally as you try to hold that two minute plank when your face is as red as a lobster and you’re trying oh so hard to look normal.

Is it seriously too much to ask to rock up to a gym class in a perfectly coordinated outfit looking effortlessly striking?

Well, apparently it is. The people at the gym are winning at this and I am losing, and I don’t like to lose in the fashion stakes. I don’t care so much that I’m not that great in an exercise class but if someone turns up in a better outfit then it can ruin my confidence for weeks.

My gym is a live catwalk of the very best outfits from Reebok, Nike, Lululemon and Lorna Jane. My workout buddies are the perfect example of this. Not only are they super fit, toned and strong, but they look so good in their gym gear it almost

hurts. These women have full time jobs and children and they still manage to look like perfection at each class.

Then there’s my favourite instructor who turns up in perfect colour coordinated numbers to each class and I swear I haven’t seen him in the same gym outfit twice in two years. These are the sorts of people that inspire me not only to be fit but to lift my fashion fitness game. My goodness, the pressure! It seems I need to swap my Manolo’s for a few new pairs of Nike Flyknit’s for starters.

The fitness industry is now a billion-dollar-a-year business with Sports Luxe now having its very own clothing category, you only have to look at sites like Net-A-Porter which now have an entire section dedicated to luxury sportswear. It makes sense that the better your gym outfit the better you will feel. The more you like your workout clothes, the more you will want to want to wear them. I’m not saying you need to apply a face full of make up or sport head-to-toe designer gear, but putting a bit of effort into your outfit will give you a boost of confidence. The secret Garden

Internationally acclaimed US floral designer and owner of Honey of a Thousand Flowers, Sarah Winward arrives in the UAE this month to host a one-of-a-kind workshop. We sat down with her to talk flowers, foliage and her love for the Middle East Her life reads like a real life Pinterest board inspired by gorgeous garden florals. Best described as loose, textured, and slightly wild, Sarah’s floral designs are unique and whimsical. Based in Salt Lake City, her work takes her to beautiful destinations all over the world. Her flowers evoke the feeling of freshly gathered garden flowers, with all their natural variations and inconsistencies.

How did you get into flower arranging?

I’ve always loved flowers, though I never thought they would end up being my career.

I worked at flower shops a few different times when I was a teenager.

Because of my experience in shops there, I was comfortable with flowers, and I knew a lot about them. A few years later I was helping a friend with her wedding. I had a lot of fun, and it started me thinking about flowers in a different way. For the rest of that year I started making arrangements just for myself. I started taking photos of my work so that I had it documented. I would make things for friends, then friends of friends, and then in 2010 I took my first client.

Have you ever been to the UAE before? What are your thoughts on the region?

I have been to Dubai before and love the area. I actually studied the Middle East in school, and even attempted to learn Arabic for a few years. Right before I started my business I spent about three months travelling through the region and really fell in love with it. I love the food, the people, the land, the language, and the richness of the culture.

What made you decide to come to the Middle East for your workshop event?

I was so excited to be invited out to teach in Dubai by Bliss Flowers & Design.

Last time I visited the region I was still finishing my studies in school and in the very beginning stages of turning my love for flowers into a job. I am so excited to return to a place that I visited in the infancy of my flower career.

What are your personal favourite flowers and floral combinations?

It is hard to commit to a favorite flower. I tend to like flowers that have sort of a trumpet shape, I love anything that has tall and bell shaped blooms off of it.

My top five favorite are: foxglove, hellebore, lilac, ferns, and campanula bell. My favorite colour combinations tend to have a bit of a twist to them. I like using soft, sweet colours but then mixing them with something that is a bit muddy or sour.

I think that adds some depth to the colour palette.

What inspires you to create your arrangements?

The seasons, and the change in colour and texture that they bring with them are my biggest source of inspiration. Where I live in Salt Lake City there are four very distinct seasons. Each one has its own colour palette and type of flowers

and foliage that comes with it. I love the transitions between each of the seasons.

The movement in nature keeps everything new and interesting to me, and I love creating arrangements from the feelings nature around me evoke.

How has your design style evolved over the years?

Regardless of the reason, I think it is wonderful to make arrangements for yourself and bring them into your space. Before I starting working in flowers I made arrangements out of whatever flowers I could get my hands on. I think staying true to what it is about flowers that you like will always give your flower arrangements something special and individual.Flowers that have that emotion will be interesting and sell well, or just look beautiful for you!

I think my work is constantly changing, and I am happy about that. Because I take cues from my surroundings, I really love travelling for my work. I travel for most of my work now, and I think that going to new environments and having new material to work with really keeps me evolving. Each place I go to has its own mood. I love trying to make my flowers fit in there.

What trends do you see surfacing now in your industry?

I think for weddings and floral design in general, people are into wild and natural

or anyone who says that Abu Dhabi doesn’t take art seriously, send

them to the No White Walls exhibition.

The fantastic artist-led initiative, of the same name, is focused on developing exhibitions and visual arts projects around the Emirates, aimed to encourage direct contact with the artists and their audience, by providing a platform for engaging in the arts, and adding to the cultural diversity within the UAE. This year, No White Walls features six artists working in a variety of mediums including paintings, sculpture, photography, and digital and textile art. The exhibition kicked off at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, a committed supporter of art and culture in the city, in the renowned Chocolate Gallery corridor.

This year, the No White Walls exhibition will feature new artists: Mohammad Awwad from Jordan, an artist and graphic designer whose artwork encompasses a vintage, surreal style with playful colours contrasting over layers of textures, and combining the various cultures that he has been exposed to. No White Walls veteran artists will also be exhibiting their new pieces, including Julia Ibbini, Emily Gordon, Yiannis Roussakis, Janine Ibbini and Jennifer Simon.

Julia Ibbini, artist and co-founder of No White Walls says: “We are really excited about the quality and diversity of the artwork that will be on show at this year’s exhibition which includes contemporary textile pieces, digital art, painting, photography and wearable art.”

Emily Gordon, artist and co-founder of No White Walls says: “We’ve had a fantastic response to our No White Walls exhibitions over the past couple of years. As an artist-led organisation we’ve found that art-lovers and collectors value being able to talk to the artists about their journeys, their inspiration and their technique.”

The Artists Emily Gordon Emily’s startlingly modern and colorful work consists of multiple layers of acrylic paint, interlaced with paraffin, resin, gold and silver leaf. This contemporary art form achieves remarkable visual depth which has the simultaneous effect of mesmerizing and thrilling the observer. Emily personally developed this unique style of art, a form of multi-media, which progressively evolved through years of extensive experimentation until she finally found the final technique that she finds satisfying. Having lived in the Middle East for over 25 years, Emily admits a fascination for the sensual shapes, colours and designs of Arabic, Moorish and Byzantine architecture, and communicates this passion through 66

Julia Ibbini Renowned for her unique style and approach, this JordanianBritish artist has spent most of her life in the UAE and many of her pieces draw some reference to life and living here. Julia studied at Leeds College of Art and Design in the UK, graduating in 2002. She has exhibited extensively across the UAE in both solo and group shows collaborating with organisations such as the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Emirates Palace and The Mojo Gallery in Dubai. Julia has been organising ‘pop-up’ shows with fellow artists over the past five years and in 2013 established No White Walls, an artist-led initiative that develops exhibitions and projects throughout the UAE. Julia’s work has been purchased by collectors worldwide,

Her work is also in the collections of members of the royal family in the UAE and she was commissioned to create a work in celebration of the UAE’s 40th Anniversary which was unveiled

by HH, The Duke of York. Julia combines photographs, drawings and paintings using a digital layering process to create the colour and detail in her work. Each individual piece is made up of up to 100 layers. The work is then printed onto archival paper and painstakingly overlaid by hand with paint, varnishes, beads, crystals and metallic ink. Janine Ibbini Janine has been working with different art forms for most of her life. In recent years she has combined her love of fabric and threads with her interests in fine art and this has resulted in her passion; textile art. Janine has lived in the Middle East for 30 years, 28 of those in the UAE. Her work is influenced by the people, the culture and the landscapes she experiences here. Her pieces are inspired by the patterns she sees all around her and sometimes she develops her pieces based on the words from a song or poem. Janine’s pieces involve numerous layers of fabrics and stitching, with a

piece taking hours, days and sometimes weeks to complete. Janine enjoys teaching and sharing her knowledge with others and is an active member of the textile arts community. Mo Awwad Mohammad Awwad is an artist and graphic designer located in Amman, Jordan, and a graduate of the Academy of Arts (Egypt), who finds inspiration in random motives, personal interests, colours, textures and his daily life features, gathering and using anything from Magazine collages to site seeing tickets. His artwork shows vintage, surreal style with playful colours contrasting over layers of textures, and mixes the various cultures that he is been exposed to. His continuous pursuit of new experiences, mediums and ideas makes his work authentically diverse and has contributed to him exhibiting in Jordan, Cairo, UK and KSA.

Yiannis Roussakis Yiannis, a Photographer and Digital Artist, was born in Athens, Greece. For the past 12 years, he has been living and working around the world (Laos, Thailand, Qatar, Mexico, Ghana, India, Oman, Scotland, London and Athens) and is now based in UAE. With his photos he aims to reveal the surreal nature of seemingly trivial objects, spaces and moments, reflecting the idea that our

personal reality is a state of dreaming. He has presented his work in solo and collective shows in Abu Dhabi, London, Athens and Glasgow. His work was commended at 2012 Sony World Photo Awards and was included in the final show at Somerset House in London. Jen Simon Jen has lived in the UAE since 2000. She is widely known for her unique depiction of global urban cityscapes. Since then her work has evolved and now includes the people that inhabit the cities, drawing inspiration from her time living in the Middle East and earlier globetrots.

Travel Escapes

I

t’s easy to assume I am in a remote part of the countryside

– complete with rugged beauty and more herbs I knew existed. The sky, ablaze with sherbet orange with smatterings of fuchsia pink streaks, is delicious enough to lick. The shaggy but perfectly maintained shrubbery does a dexterous job of sealing out any 21st century sight and breaks the modest cacophony of the city into what sounds like intermittent radio waves. But I am not in the rural neck of the woods, I am in the heart of Rome, on a hillside branching off the River Tiber with The Vatican next door, to be exact. And I am strolling down a meandering pebbled-path flanked by exotic foliage in the grounds of the Gran Meliá hotel. I put my nose to foreign blades of greenery and take in the prickly earthy scent. I haven’t had time to commune with nature like this in a long time - as sickeningly pretentious as that sounds.

We are, in this world, more mobile than ever.

Getting on a plane isn’t the event it used to be, planning a trip isn’t a drawn out burden nor is it a question of airfare. We can get to the far reaches of Alaska or the Rain Forest if we want to. Our ability to go beyond borders is now a primitive act. We are however running the risk of cheapening and 70

over-commercialising our treasured experiences by compromising quantity or quality. Every now and again it’s imperative to be good to yourself and enjoy the postcard version of life. That’s why I’m unashamedly indulging right now - even through Instagram. And I hate those people, #noonecares.

The luxury urban resort literally sits within the legends of ancient Rome. The historical villa Agrippina once belonged to the Roman empress who was the mother of the Emperor Nero. The hotel’s rich history blends seamlessly with the elegant interiors which balances traditional luxury with sophisticated avant garde flair.

Past the cream marble floored reception, is the library lounge - a place to sit in one of the pillowed window bays and pretend to be a writer, or a member of the intelligentsia - the academic atmosphere simply calls for it. The sophisticated space with its bookshelves housing encyclopaedic knowledge of the

Walking off the bubbles, I returned to the botanical gardens again, to the ‘far-away fields’ filled with herbs native to the region - the stuff of a horticulturalist’s dream. I followed the ‘lover’s path’ through sunken gradients and bushy bliss with snappy smells of rosemary and I-wish-I-knewwhat-else-it-was.

The morning after I took to the veranda overlooking the pool for breakfast. The patio loungers with their oversized white pillows were

calling for me - I never stray with breakfast, I’m usually done in 10 minutes but this setting required staying power. Rome is an open plan museum. The higgledypiggledy cobbled stone streets alone are enough to confirm this. But in the face of the city’s deeprooted BC/AD history, the aforementioned verges on futuristic. And like with any European city the best way to get acquainted with it is to pound the pavement and walk it high and dry.

Luckily the city, despite being essentially landlocked, has enough water via fountains, restored ancient taps and the River Tiber to make you feel human again - it was boiling hot.

Everywhere you go, the fountains trickle and slosh with ice cold sheets of water. The most iconic of which is the Fontana di Trevi, one of the most visually arresting and far bigger in real life fountains, where some of the most classical and modern films in history have been shot. As it’s given a facelift every now and again, it’s continually a shot-worthy destination.

You don’t have to go to a particular site to reap the historical rewards of Rome, the statues, monuments, columns reaching the heavens and the crumbling buildings punctuate the choked streets - which the Italians have a natural aptitude for whizzing in and out of. The deathly margins that they get through on their Vespas is toe curlingly scary - and funny too - especially as the men are suited and booted in fine tailoring and shoes that shine like black glass. Wandering around the residential streets with the vibrant if slightly dusty coloured houses, it’s impossible not to wonder what it must have looked liked when it was new, before the ravages of time had sown their destructive work - especially as modern Rome sits side by side with ancient Rome - at night the dramatic shafts of light that illuminate places like the Colosseum and the Forum of Caesar render them even more mysterious.

Similarly walking along the tree-lined banks of the River Tiber is a refreshing way to see the city - and close to the shopping spots and the Spanish steps, which are undoubtedly worthy of a visit but if the mass crowd of people is anything to go by you’ll get your shot and shoot in the other direction.

Pizza and pasta eateries are tightly packed between boutique stores, with wafts of doughy bread and buttery burrata to yield you in but I let my stomach grumble a little longer to save myself for the hotel’s Vivavoce.

Within the grounds of the Gran Meliá hotel, Vivavoce, run by Michelin starred chef Alfonso with executive chef Miceli, is a major pull for

guests, Romans and business travellers. A phrase coined by the Spanish centuries ago, “viva voce” pays tribute to the “word of mouth” method used to transmit the intellectual wealth left behind by the Arab culture when their rule ended.

A white washed space of tasteful and modern finishes; Vivavoce is a place where you feel like you’re borrowing the life of a rock star. The restaurant’s intimate dimensions are such so as to feel like you’re at a dinner party but it’s enough to give privacy and individual glamour for each table.

Breaking into the feast (I use this term sparingly because although it was, feelings thereafter were wonderfully light) a fishbowl style plate arrived with red snapper sausage ‘’candida’’ sauce with courgette and crispy chard. Portions were expectantly and elegantly demure but brilliant in flavour. Don’t let the ‘sausage’ discourage non meat lovers – there isn’t a sniff of it in this dish.

And when you least anticipate a crunch you get a combo of silky soft textures with a little crackle for effect.

A green concoction to get me started on my primi piatti (that’s first course to you and me) came in the form of Neapolitan broccoli vellute, burrata cheese from Andria and squid. Again, a deep bowl presented itself, with what could only be described as a dense juniper come seaweed shade of green soup. The intensity of colour lended itself to its pure ingredients and their ability to harmonise and create a performance of skill and vigour to kick start your taste buds. It wasn’t the kind of light consistency that gives rise to slurping tendencies but more of the thicker variety, that cross between liquid and whole – enough to cut your pangs of hunger at the onset.

My secondi piatti (you get it now) was a filet of red sea bream with spring vegetables, fresh tomato and basil broth. Broth needn’t mean street food pot noodles; the chef pays close attention to striking a balance between sauce and thinly watered flavours. The sea bream was tucked into the tomato and basil broth as if cushioned. The cocktail of flavours that followed were sublime.

The diced vegetables perched obediently on the soft-as-butter fish and tied yet another dimension of flavour. The dessert, as light as the décor and as refined as the service: a Mosaic of fresh fruit with exotic sauce (passion fruit) and almond milk ice cream. After a munching marathon, I could have given the dolce a miss but this finale was my ‘cooling off ’ period.

When I retired to my room I slept the sleep of a babe in my marshmallow soft bed, while the moon illuminated the Vatican’s spire over the trees and Rome twinkled into the night. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Local Escapes If anyone of you, dear readers, has a penchant for chandeliers, we have sourced a sparkly nirvana which is essential for any diamond and crystal enthusiast. The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal’s does a brilliant job of giving you a glowing first impression. The foyer could easily be the prelude to a palace.

What’s more is the hotel sits directly in front of the UAE’s biggest mosque, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, from the other side of the highway, which seems visually appropriate, only adding to the property’s stature. When we had arrived, slightly jaded and ready for a relaxing few days, the staff (who were dressed in costume, think corsets, big dresses, grandeur, Maharaja as well) were quick to assist with our luggage and whisked us to the check-in desk where we had the warm pleasure of a hot towel and a chilled drink.

The property exists across 10 buildings, fanned out in a majestic curve around the facilities in the centre. The architecture is distinctly Venetian and has an air of added prestige and luxury. The columns on the balcony fronts in each room as an example, really lend themselves to the hotel’s image - side note: the balcony is best for late night gazing with a string of hotel bought macaroons between lively chat. In the rooms nothing seems half done; everything is generous in dimension and high in comfort. Our bed simply called for sinking and forgetting the rest! The compartmentalised bathroom is intuitive with many areas to place your clothes and accoutrements while the (very deep) bathtub view could convert even the most loyal shower user. For any luxury product user, the Asprey products the hotel offer should please!

The swimming pool mirrors that of a football pitch with an attractive infinity feature, giving the illusion of the pool and sea being one. Having decided to take a plunge in the early hours of the morning, we had the pool to ourselves - and at that size, it felt all the more exclusive.

To properly start the day, after a dip, we made use of the Club Lounge access where we were treated to a hearty breakfast in peace and quiet with an eye-pleasing view of the sea. Serving food throughout the day, the Club Lounge is ideal for when you want to get some work done or nibble on a snack. There is of course a fuller option for the main meals of the day.

You could easily while away several days without having contact with the outside world at this property. The vastness simply calls for it. Putting theory into practice, one of the mornings we took to ESPA, the hotel spa. Set to undergo a hammam treatment, we filled in the requisite form, sat for a good 10 minutes in the relaxation room and then gently ushered to the mosaic laden hammam. The iridescent tiled dome with its octagonal shaped marble table where the treatment takes place, is a truly wonderful space. Hammam treatments usually last a good hour with a lot of scrubbing, hosing down and simply lapping in gushing water. At ESPA, you are treated to a traditional style hammam but with clays, scrubs and creams that practically waft up your nose their scents are so pleasantly strong.

While the scrubbing portion of the treatment can be the most tiresome on the body, where you feel like entire layers are being shed (which is a good thing and the whole point) this treatment is broken up with several steam room sessions for you to www.ohlala-magazine.com

sweat all the toxins out. It’s a most welcomed break as you genuinely feel the magic of the treatment is taking its course. ESPA’s steam room has a very handy hose for when you’re near heat exhaustion for a cooling respite.

One thing we loved about this treatment is that a water based massage was incorporated into it. All throughout this portion of the treatment the sound of running water can be heard, as the large copper basin is being filled in the centre of the dome - the epitome of other worldly bliss. If you’re an aqua enthusiast this hammam treatment is buckets brilliant.

The final clay used has a slight burning sensation as it’s applied to your skin as the pores are exposed but it feels more like a healing burn more than a painful one. It goes without saying, we were baby skin ready by the end of it! After the treatment you can go and plunge into the spa’s exclusive pool which also leads out onto a private section of the hotel’s beach - reserved only for spa guests.

Among the many, many outlets the hotel offers, we, being big beef eaters, had to sample The Forge. The traditional steakhouse does not disappoint; it’s irresistibly good. At the outset, it’s clear the staff is well versed and on point with their steak knowledge, down to the specific knives needed for each cut of steak.

We started off with perhaps an unusual option - fresh burrata - but there’s something so light and airy about a slice of the white cheese. Much to our delight, it

It came with a chorus of roasted tomato, balsamic and olive oil caviar, wild roquette. Alongside the burrata, was a tightly packed crab cake, with tomato fondue, preserved lemon aioli and black olive powder, which was neither too fishy or scraggly.

The main star of the night however, was the choice cut of Argentinian tenderloin. Being largely lean, it’s dense and loaded with juice. Served with a decadent béarnaise sauce and finely cut crispy French fries, presented with chic minimalism and flair, this plate is a must-try for any meat lover. The hunky cut was definitely more than we could get through but somehow, with regular intervals of singing its praises, we got there in the end! Trust us, it’s a challenge you’ll want to defeat.

Whoever said there’s always room for dessert is so right. We braved the Alitato Valrhona dark chocolate soufflé which was dripping with gooey goodness and was sinfully rich. Despite veering into a food coma our plates were scraped clean. The Forge is an excellent outlet for a quiet steak night. The ambience lends itself to a night of great conversation and delicious food. We also had a special appearance for the Argentinian chef who enthusiastically explained each dish’s’ origins and why he loves them. It’s always a good sign when the chef can offer an interactive experience with guests.

It’s hard to fault anything at The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal; it’s a property that delivers what it sets out to bring to its guests. As always with The Ritz Carlton, the service is personal, warm and giving. And seeing that the hotel is so expansive, there really is no reason to leave for the duration of your stay..

by Fashion edition was going to be present at the event. We first caught wind of this beauty earlier this year when we received press bulletins about its arrival in the Gulf. It was one of two special editions ordered by Rolls-Royce to the region to showcase the company’s incredible bespoke capabilities, the other being the equally sublime Inspired by Film.

As you can imagine, it is drop-dead gorgeous.

The Inspired by Fashion’s unique features, created by the Bespoke Design Studio at Rolls-Royce in

Goodwood, draw inspiration from colour palettes, materials and techniques used in the world of high fashion. It boasts a two-tone exterior colour scheme of Andalucian White and Arctic White, and the interior is a contemporary impression of the car’s classic Arctic White and Black interior colour scheme.

The car’s front and rear door pockets are finished with fine silks, adorned with an abstract representation of the Spirit of Ecstasy, and the whole interior look is completed elegantly with a Bespoke Clock, set as a piece of jewellery, styled to emit a pearl effect.

You can’t imagine the effect this car has when you see it glistening in the sunlight like a dazzling white diamond, and it is very much a girl’s best friend too!

The driving experience is as sublime as the visual beauty of the car. It simply glides along the road in incredible silence, a serene cloud of comfort.

However, don’t expect to be bored in such cosseted luxury, because an impressive amount of performance underpins this luxurious fastback coupe, the closest that Rolls-Royce make to a sports car. Massive power comes courtesy of the 6.6l twin-turbo V12, which has an output of 624hp and 800Nm of torque, which means that this big luxury coupe will reach 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and a top speed of 250km/h.

What will amaze you though, is how refined the whole experience is, even when you really floor such a powerful engine. The gear changes are so smooth and seamless that you don’t even know when they happen, and the engine is just a quiet purr. All you experience is a huge and relentless surge in speed, and before you know it you’re pushing 200km/h – in silence!

Speed is not what the Rolls-Royce Wraith Inspired by Fashion is all about though. It’s about looking and feeling spectacular. With Abu Dhabi Formula 1 upon us this month, our columnist gives advice on how to be in pole position from what bag to carry and why disco naps are key

All the people, So many people... yes, you guessed correctly, that’s the lyrics to Blur’s Parklife. F1 denotes the pinnacle of the Abu Dhabi social season, and it’s always invigorating to see the hoards of people descending upon Abu Dhabi for F1. Whilst I can’t recall thinking about Blur since the great “Blur versus Oasis” debate at school, I am excited about seeing these Britpop legends perform during F1.

In light of my love of fashion and Pre-Raphaelite obsession, I’m also looking forward to seeing what stylist Aldene Johnson has in store for Florence and the Machine’s leading lady.

I have to admit that aside from Great Britain’s pride and joy, Lewis Hamilton, I wouldn’t recognise any of the other drivers even without their helmets on! Nonetheless, I love the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and all that it signifies. F1 week is akin to a year’s worth of entertainment all in one week: the Abu Dhabi version of Freshers’ Week.

It requires, however, serious preparation in terms of time and wardrobe planning. Here are my top tips: • Consider getting tickets to access the Marina area. There are great places to eat and drink and you can watch the race from the big screens and the corner of the track. But above all, it’s the top spot for seeing and being seen. You can saunter up and down the wood decking, catching the eyes of the beautiful yachting crews.

• Being into fashion, what to wear is unashamedly top of my priority list. Whilst there is no dress code for F1 (think St Tropez meets California), it’s tricky as you need an outfit that works during the day, 90

but also at the concerts and on the dance floor. If you haven’t got a tan, steer clear of white and regardless of how good your tan is, please keep your hemlines respectable and apply suncream. I intend to wear a Mr Self Portrait black mesh dress which could have been designed with F1 in mind.

• I’m coveting Sophia Webster’s new Poppy sandals in a chequered flag pattern that would look so chic on the F1 finish line.

But I warn you, do not be tempted to wear heels unless you can run a marathon in them. There are some big distances to cover between the Marina, the stands and the concert venue. And you will want to be still dancing at dawn, rather than limping at the end of the night.

If you insist on wearing heels, make it a pair of wedges given that the concerts are on grass.

• Whilst still on the subject of fashion, I find a bag with a shoulder chain or strap so much easier to handle at the gigs. And don’t forget your sunglasses: Fendi Paradeyes are on my wish list.

• This is the one event of the year when ear plugs are cool. Use them, as the noise of the cars is intense. If you have D&G’s jewelencrusted headphones, that’s even better.

• Plan your schedule well ahead of time. Trying to meet up with all your friends in the right place requires excellent coordination skills. There are some amazing events happening in the weeks surrounding the F1, when Abu Dhabi weather is at its finest, so don’t miss out.

• Be prepared for some sleep deprivation. You will need to take some serious disco naps if you intend to party all week.

• Lastly, if someone offers you a tour of the pit lanes, say “yes”.
