LETTER FROM THE DEAN Ohio State College of Pharmacy alumnus Dr. Nick Saltsman, PharmD ’07, recently told our students that “prescription drug misuse is the most important medication-related issue of our time.”

Ohio is one of the hardest hit states when it comes to the opioid epidemic. In 2016, unintentional drug overdoses caused the deaths of 4,050 Ohioans, a 32.8 percent increase compared to 2015, according to Ohio Department of Health statistics.

While data about the epidemic is grim, our students, alumni and faculty have proven capable and dedicated to turning the tide. Under the tremendous leadership of Ken Hale and Nicole Kwiek, Generation Rx has made incredible contributions in its first 10 years, and is a shining example of how the pharmacy community can move the needle on America’s opioid epidemic.

Throughout this issue of The Script, you will read about Generation Rx and the people who brought the program to life. Originating at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2007, Generation Rx has spread to nearly every school of pharmacy in the country. While a few people and organizations have been called out by name throughout the following pages, countless others have been vital to the program’s success.

Generation Rx demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships and what can happen when the two come together to address our nation’s health care challenges. With the incredible support of organizations such as the Cardinal Health Foundation, our faculty and students were able to take an idea and turn it into a program has reached millions of people across the country. Kroger has also made inspirational commitments to drug disposal, patient education, and support of educational efforts in K-12 schools toward “safe medication practices for life.” These companies have literally and figuratively given wings to this work.

Though the program was created in response to the opioid crisis, Generation Rx’s best days are yet to come as its model is strengthened and utilized to address the myriad medication-related problems that confront our health care system.

“I remember the day so clearly. I was sitting in Dr. Ken Hale’s Introduction to Pharmacy course as an undergraduate student. He started talking about the opioid epidemic and told the class that more Ohioans died from accidental overdose than in car accidents every day. I let that sink in for a moment, then stayed after class to find out how I could get involved. I knew right then that I wanted to be a pharmacist and that I wanted to help this cause,” Schmuhl said.

and the brightest in our various academic programs, and they simply do amazing things. Kelsey is emblematic of that great tradition. She works hard, she gives so much, and she cares deeply. It’s a crucible for positive change, and she has made a difference at every level of her training and practice,” said Dr. Hale.

Schmuhl thought that this would be scalable to the university and a great way for her to get the word out about addiction in Columbus. So, with a team of friends, Kelsey organized the first NOPE candlelight vigil at Mirror Lake on Ohio State’s campus in 2012. The vigil is now an annual event organized by the Generation Rx Collaborative student organization.

In March 2015, the Ohio House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 4.

In addition to bringing the candlelight vigil to Ohio State, Schmuhl was the only student that testified in support for Ohio House Bill 4 to the Ohio Health and Aging Committee in February 2015. In her testimony, Schmuhl explained the powerful role of a pharmacist, especially student pharmacists, play on health teams. She also explained how student pharmacists had the training necessary to be able to dispense Naloxone.

“Students’ voices are powerful, and legislators listen to students who are passionate about their profession,” Schmuhl said.

Schmuhl credits the plethora of positive mentors in the College of Pharmacy as part of the reason she has been so successful in her career, especially Dr. Ken Hale, clinical professor of pharmacy practice and science, for his consistent guidance throughout her education.

“Don’t ever think that as a student you don’t have the power or capability to make an impact, because you do. And if you don’t do it, no one else will,” Schmuhl said.

In 2017, Schmuhl graduated from the college’s PharmD program. At the hooding ceremony, Schmuhl received the Faculty Award, the highest honor for a graduating PharmD student. Schmuhl is a great example of a student finding their passion and turning it into action. She hopes other students will follow her lead.

“If I were to give advice to students who wanted to get involved, I would tell them to say yes to opportunities when they come up and don’t be afraid to seek out opportunities outside of the College of Pharmacy. There are so many opportunities in Columbus at the campus level, at the community level and the state level. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and say yes,” Schmuhl said.

Third annual Pharmathon raised over $5,000 This October, the Pharmacy Alumni Society hosted its third annual Pharmathon. Each year, the society organizes Pharmathon, a 5k family-friendly run/walk around Ohio State’s campus to raise awareness of medication safety. This year, 157 people participated in the event and the society raised more than $5,260 to benefit Generation Rx. Since its inception, the society has raised nearly $13,500 for Generation Rx!

The Generation Rx Collaborative The Generation Rx Collaborative is a student-led, volunteer-based organization which aims to enhance medication safety practices and educate the public about the misuse of prescription drugs. Currently more than 200 passionate Ohio State pharmacy students collaborate with other professional colleges to provide resources to those who are struggling with addiction. Established at Ohio State in 2015, the program has been growing exponentially. Around the country, there is a Generation Rx Collaborative chapter at nearly every major pharmacy school.

During each academic year, the Generation Rx Collaborative participates in or hosts four large events, including Pharmathon 5K, the NOPE Candlelight Vigil, and two medication disposal days. In addition to these events, the organization hosts medication safety presentations to help those in the community understand the importance of using all medications as prescribed.

In 2007, the misuse of prescription medications, especially opioids, was rising to near-epidemic proportions. More people around Ohio were dying of drug overdoses than car accidents every day and something needed to be done. That’s when the College of Pharmacy’s Ken Hale, RPh, PhD, and Nicole Kwiek, PhD, decided to take matters into their own hands.

After reading the book Generation Rx: How Prescription Drugs are Altering American Lives, Minds, and Bodies by Greg Critser, Hale knew he could do something to make a difference, and could do it right at Ohio State. The solution? Establishing a new prescription drug misuse prevention program – the Generation Rx Initiative.

Alumni Symposium centers on in the community The College of Pharmacy held its annual Alumni Symposium, Caring for Our Communities; Addressing Drug Misuse in Today’s World, on October 6, 2017, at The Center of Science and Industry (COSI). More than 170 Buckeye alumni and community partners attended the event.

This continuing education opportunity offered tracks for pharmacists and Ohio State Extension partners, opioid patient education program information, a Generation Rx resource overview, opportunities for community collaboration for prevention of drug misuse and legislative and law updates and education.

Dr. Mark Hurst, medical director of the State of Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services, provided the keynote address, “The Opioid Epidemic in Ohio: How did we get here? Where are we headed?” Dr. Hurst discussed the landscape of the opioid crisis in Ohio, including effective prevention and treatment options. Attendees learned about the importance of utilizing modern evidence-based practices to treat patients with opioid use disorders, and the current and planned Ohio efforts to decrease these disorders and opioid-related facilities.

GENERATION Rx

Generation Rx Lab at COSI combines

RESEARCH, SCIENCE AND FUN The Generation Rx Lab, located inside the Life exhibit of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) allows the College of Pharmacy to broadly spread the message about the science behind medicines in an engaging and interactive way.

This lab, built through a partnership with COSI and funded by Cardinal Health, would not have been possible without many people working tirelessly for its success.

Have you ever wandered past the large glass rooms with writing on the walls and wondered what happens in there? Each day, College of Pharmacy staff members educate COSI guests about medication safety through fun and interactive shows.

“The lab is the only museum-based pharmacology education laboratory in the world. Its success wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated postdoctoral fellows (including Drs. Molly Downing, Katie Summers, and Cynthia Canan) and students over the years. Additionally, the Cardinal Health Foundation’s strong financial support continues to make this innovative experience accessible to science learners all around the country,” says Kwiek.

With most activities aimed at younger audiences, the lab staff use a medical robot named Bob the Abra Cadaver to simulate medical emergencies. Guests have to collect data and perform procedures to resolve Bob’s health crises, from allergic reactions to overdoses. Each simulation teaches guests about medication safety, such as not sharing medication and talking to doctors when a problem isn’t resolving. The lab also leads guests in hands-on pharmacology experiments.

“The Generation Rx Laboratory is actually research space, where we evaluate the use of pharmacology education tools in engaging science museum guests of all ages. Can we facilitate the guests to think like scientists and learn the scientific process? Are they understanding not only basic biology and chemistry principles but also safe medicationtaking practices? Our data suggests that these fun, interactive experience in the lab accomplish these outcomes quite well, said Nicole Kwiek, director of The Generation Rx Lab. In addition to studying the guests, Dr. Kwiek said the lab is also studying the experience of the students who are teaching.

“The lab is staffed primarily by College of Pharmacy students,” she said. “We want to know if teaching within the lab is improving students’ communication skills. Being able to communicate complex topics in easy to understand ways will be very important in the student’s career – no matter which direction they take their degree.”

In addition to the COSI demonstrations, high school and college aged students who are not at the museum can also participate. Older students can teleconference with the Generation Rx lab staff to view a live demonstration about an opioid overdose. Students help the lab staff counsel a patient about their opioid medication prescription and the risks, and follow the patient’s journey with overusing the medication.

CLASS DINNER The Pharmacy Alumni Society welcomed alumni back to campus during the 2017 Homecoming Weekend. In addition to co-hosting the symposium (see pages 8–9), the society hosted an All-Class Reunion Dinner Friday, October 6, at the Grand Event Center. More than 50 alumni from various classes helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1967, as well as reunions of the class of 1982, 1992 and even a few graduates from 2007. Dean Mann congratulated all of the graduates on their achievements and Buckeye Tailgaters provided entertainment.

Congratulations to Karen L. Kier, recipient of the 2017 Clifton J. Latiolais Award The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy proudly honored Karen L. Kier, PhD, at the 2017 Clifton J. Latiolais Award Ceremony at the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando in December. Kier was nominated by her peers and chosen for this honor by past award recipients.

The Latiolais Award was created by former students in honor of Clifton J. Latiolais, an Ohio State College of Pharmacy professor who created the hospital pharmacy graduate and residency program. The award is presented to a graduate of the hospital-systems pharmacy administration program or an individual involved with the development of these programs who has made significant contributions to institutional pharmacy practice. These contributions may include achievements or outstanding performance in institutional pharmacy practice, education, administration and/or research.

Mason has worked for The Kroger Co., Columbus Division since 2010. Her focus is advancing the practice of community pharmacists by advocating for her colleagues and patients.

Summers is a lecturer with The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and co-director of a summer science and career exploration program for high school students interested in pharmaceutical sciences.

Karen L. Kier is a professor of clinical pharmacy, director of health and drug information, and director of assessment at Ohio Northern University (ONU) Raabe College of Pharmacy. Kier also maintains her practice as an ambulatory care preventative medicine specialist with the ONU HealthWise clinic. She is board certified in ambulatory care and pharmacotherapy through BPS and is a certified tobacco treatment specialist.

Kier’s mission is to be an active advocate for the profession while creating innovative programs to enhance the profession. She is responsible for designing a pharmacist-directed US Preventive Task Force service for worksite wellness, as well as programs in osteoporosis screening, skin cancer screening, immunizations, and eye health.

She believes strongly in advocating for pharmacy and feels this can be done best by being active in professional organizations. Kier is heavily involved in educating pharmacy students as well as pharmacists. She has been described as someone who has changed the profession through her character, her passion for the profession, and her unending search for quality improvement in the patient care and the educational process.
