DOCTOR OF PHARMACY PROGRAM

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program develops future pharmacy leaders who are prepared for the changing face of health care.

The PharmD program develops best-in-class patient care providers who serve as the responsible medication experts in the healthcare delivery system. Graduates of the program are exceptionally well prepared for pharmacy practice and advanced pharmacy education.

Ohio State has seven health science colleges and is located in the center of a comprehensive, nationally ranked medical center. Student pharmacists have access to world-class faculty members and learn from scientists and clinicians who are discovering tomorrow’s cures and treating today’s most complex diseases.

INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM & COURSES Our curriculum, Inquire, Innovate, Involve (I3), takes a unique approach to education by structuring classes in modules so students can experience the integration of science and practice.

I3 allows students to receive hands-on pharmacy training early in the program and develops the interpersonal skills that are critical to patient interactions. The curriculum focuses on helping students develop a comprehensive problem-solving approach through increased incorporation of active learning strategies, integration of pharmaceutical and clinical sciences, and earlier introduction of integrated practical experiences that could be simulated and then practiced.

WHAT TO EXPECT

In year one of the program (P1), students start with a module that helps them make the transition into professional school. Next steps include receiving training in the basics of pharmacy law and a foundation in the administrative and management sciences of the practice of pharmacy. Students learn skills in providing patient care, such as counseling patients, administering immunizations and taking blood pressure. They will practice these skills and more in an integrated patient care laboratory where they receive direct feedback and coaching from pharmacists. Throughout the year, students will spend time in community pharmacies with a pharmacist preceptor, practicing the skills they learn through the curriculum. The academic year ends with an assessment of each student’s proficiency of skills and knowledge. During the summer, students complete a 40-hour immersion experience where they apply the skills, knowledge and attitudes they developed in their first academic year.

P1:

The second and third years of the program (P2 and P3) afford students the opportunity to continue to develop and practice skills that are critical to becoming an exemplary pharmacy practitioner. These two years include a four-course sequence where students learn how the pharmaceutical sciences integrate with clinical sciences and how this relates to the treatment of patients. Students also take a four-course sequence designed to teach them how to advance collaboration and quality of patient care by providing interprofessional opportunities for students to learn about, from and with other members of the healthcare team. At the end of the second and third years there are comprehensive assessments of knowledge and skills. The summer between the second and third years includes a 40-hour immersion experience in an institutional pharmacy setting.

P2:

P3: The fourth and final year of the PharmD program (P4) includes nine one-month rotations in multiple pharmacy practice settings. These rotations are called Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) and enable students to hone and improve their skills to become exemplary patient care providers.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION The Ohio State College of Pharmacy prepares students to become outstanding pharmacists in current practice settings and future healthcare system environments through forward-looking, unique practice experiences.

The experiential education program allows students to practice what they’ve learned in the classroom alongside experienced preceptors. Beginning their first year, students participate in real-world learning opportunities with an emphasis on patient-centered care, allowing for skill development, including the attitudes and values needed to become a trusted healthcare professional. The program is divided into introductory and advanced practice components that are completed outside of the classroom. The introductory components are completed throughout the students’ first three years in the program. Students can expect to spend 80-130 hours on introductory rotations, mainly focused on community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and medication management. The fourth year of the program consists entirely of advanced practice rotations, during which students will complete nine rotations for a minimum of 1,440 hours.

For the core patient care rotations, the college has partnerships with pharmacy sites across the state.

Students complete rotations with health systems such as The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth, Mount Carmel, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and local community hospitals.

In the community pharmacy setting, students are placed in chain pharmacies such as Kroger, Walgreens and Giant Eagle, as well as independent pharmacies.

All eligible students are highly encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process each year. Completing this enables a student to be eligible for various types of scholarships/grants in addition to student loans. Parent information is not taken into consideration when determining Expected Family Contribution, however, it is utilized when determining eligibility for one of the possible loans. Students are encouraged to include this information if possible and should know that it does not harm a student if they are not able to include parent information.

Scholarships are available to PharmD students each year. Scholarships for incoming students are based on need. Every eligible student should file the FAFSA. Without the FAFSA on file, students will not receive any need-based aid during their first year in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The requirements of each scholarship vary and include components such as need, merit, career interest and other demographic information. Each year, students are sent a survey that is used to gather the information needed to award these scholarships.

ADMISSIONS Admission to Ohio State’s PharmD program is a competitive process. Decisions for admission are made after considering a student’s entire application, including their full academic record, personal statement, supplemental application, letters of recommendation, level of experience, interest in the field and performance in an in-person interview.

ELEMENTS OF YOUR APPLICATION Letters of recommendation: You are required to submit three letters of recommendation with your PharmCAS application.

We recommend that one of these letters is from a pharmacist. One letter should be of an academic nature, speaking to your critical and analytical thinking skills and ability to be successful in a rigorous program.

Supplemental application: The Ohio State College of Pharmacy requires students to complete a supplemental application in addition to the PharmCAS application. You will receive this application and directions on how to create and activate an Ohio State username about a week after your PharmCAS application is verified.

Prerequisites: You must complete a set of prerequisite courses before you may matriculate in the PharmD program.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE We are dedicated to creating an extraordinary experience for every Pharmacy Buckeye.

The college supports students on their paths to success by helping them live healthy, fulfilling lives throughout their time at Ohio State—inside and outside the classroom.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Outside of the classroom, the college partners with SinfoniaRx to run the Institute for Innovation Outcomes Medication Management Program (ITIO-MMP). The ITIO-MMP is a telepharmacy program that provides medication management services to more than 3,000 patients a week through 40 professional staff members and 130 students (80 of whom are pharmacy interns). ITIO-MMP employees check their patients’ medication records for drug interactions and missing or duplicate medications, and look at costs to see if there is a less expensive, generic option. They also counsel patients on their prescriptions – an invaluable learning experience that allows students to better understand cultural, social and financial barriers that patients and healthcare professionals face. It also provides an opportunity to work with complex disease states outside of the classroom.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

There are a variety of student organizations available to join, providing students the opportunity to grow and gain leadership skills. With almost 1,400 student organization across the university, Ohio State offers a wide range of ways for student to get involved. The college is home to 26 pharmacy-specific organizations, ranging from national organizations to special interest groups.

EDUCATION ABROAD

In partnership with the Office of International Affairs, the college offers annual, short-term education abroad experiences to PharmD students. These experiences help students gain an understanding of the pharmaceutical and healthcare considerations of another country, enabling students to relate this experience to the larger context of their future profession. Past destinations have included Switzerland, Italy and England.

The nine-day programs take place during the university’s spring break, providing students an international experience without interfering with the curriculum structure.

COMMITMENT TO WELLNESS

The university’s wellness initiative, Buckeye Wellness, aims to improve the health and quality of life at Ohio State through evidence-based education and tools. The College of Pharmacy has been recognized across the university for its commitment to a culture of wellness for all students, faculty and staff.

Throughout the year, activities and events are available to enhance and promote a healthy lifestyle, including fresh fruit around the college, a free little library, a “Take Five” station and scheduled wellness walks. Students have access to mental health resources as well, with a licensed counselor stationed at the college each week.
