BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES PROGRAM

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) program is customized to fit your future career goals.

The BSPS program grants you a highly unique degree that delivers unsurpassed preparation for careers in a variety of biomedical professions. In this interdisciplinary program, students will study the areas of drug discovery, delivery, action and therapy.

Students can pursue this degree through one of two pathways, enabling them to focus in areas that would be most relevant to their desired career path; the Healthcare Professions Pathway or the Drug Discovery & Development Pathway. Students also have the opportunity to engage in clinical-, laboratory- and communitybased research experiences, preparing them for any biomedical field that interests them.

INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM Our students are prepared with the breadth and depth of knowledge and skills for a career in a variety of biomedical fields.

The BSPS program is one of less than 20 such programs in the country that provides exceptional training for success in a variety of healthcare or research-oriented/non-clinical graduate programs and careers.

Both pathways incorporate innovative coursework with an increased focus on integrated science learning, hands-on laboratory experiences and career development.

HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS PATHWAY

The Healthcare Professions Pathway incorporates the prerequisite coursework needed for professional programs like pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine and other disciplines in health sciences, while also linking high-level concepts to clinical practice and patient care.

DRUG DISCOVERY & DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

The Drug Discovery & Development Pathway is designed for students intending to pursue research-based graduate programs (Master’s or PhD degrees) or careers in the pharmaceutical industry. Students have the opportunity to engage in research experiences at the college and across campus, providing them with a strong foundation and putting them a step ahead.

COMBINED DEGREE PROGRAM We offer a seven-year combined degree for undergraduate students who are committed to pursuing their PharmD at Ohio State.

The combined degree program identifies course efficiencies between the BSPS and PharmD curricula in order to provide a seamless, streamlined student learning experience.

Students pursuing this option complete three years of the BSPS curriculum and then matriculate into the four-year PharmD program. They will receive their bachelor’s degree at the end of their first-year of pharmacy school. As such, the time to both degrees is lessened by one year, compared to the conventional 4+4 layout of the individual BSPS and PharmD degree programs.

Admission is not guaranteed for all students. EAP students must maintain all program requirements and have course requirements met. Non-EAP students must go through the competitive admissions process.

EARLY ASSURANCE PROGRAM The Early Assurance Program (EAP) is for high-achieving, prospective first-year students interested in becoming licensed pharmacists.

Acceptance to the program guarantees admission to our Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program without the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) if EAP requirements are met by graduation. EAP students also have access to a variety of benefits on campus through their residence in Pharmacy House. Students interested in this option would enroll in the Healthcare Professions Pathway.

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES

Tuition and fees vary by college and academic program. In addition, students should anticipate expenses such as books, supplies, travel, recreation and personal items. These expenses are considered when determining financial aid awards. Anticipate an increase in expenses from year to year.

Students enrolled at least half-time are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Benefits Plan.

GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH Students have the opportunity to get involved with research as soon as they step foot on campus.

Beginning in your first year, you can pursue research opportunities across the university in a wide range of academic disciplines, building strong relationships with faculty, while strengthening critical thinking and problem solving skills.

OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND CREATIVE INQUIRY

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry helps students pursue research opportunities at Ohio State. Research experiences can be completed at Ohio State or another institution. Students can conduct research independently, as part of a team or in collaboration with faculty members.

SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (SURF)

The college offers Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships for students who would like to do research in any of the pharmaceutical sciences. The fellowship provides a minimum of $4,000 for a ten-week, full-time experience.

RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS

Internships give students an opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields. The university partners with employers across the state and country to help promote internship opportunities.

EDUCATION ABROAD

In partnership with the Office of International Affairs, we offer annual, short-term education aboard experiences to undergraduate students. These experiences help students gain an understanding of pharmaceutical and healthcare considerations of another country, enabling students to relate this experience to the larger context of their future profession. Past destinations have included Switzerland, Italy and England.

The nine-day programs take place during the university’s spring break, providing students an international experience without interfering with the curriculum structure.

COMMITMENT TO WELLNESS

The university’s wellness initiative, Buckeye Wellness, aims to improve the health and quality of life at Ohio State through evidence-based education and tools. The College of Pharmacy has been recognized across the university for its commitment to a culture of wellness for all students, faculty and staff.

Throughout the year, activities and events are available to enhance and promote a healthy lifestyle, including fresh fruit around the college, a free little library, a “Take Five” station and scheduled wellness walks. Students have access to mental health resources as well, with a licensed counselor stationed at the college throughout the week.
