A Letter From the Chair Dear Readers, I am delighted to present the 2022 Annual Impact Report for The Ohio State University Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE). As Chair, I am honored to reflect upon the remarkable achievements and progress made by our esteemed faculty, dedicated staff, and exceptional students.

Over the past year, FABE has continued to uphold its commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and community involvement. The best example of this from 2022 is the partnership between the university, the State of Ohio, JobsOhio, and One Columbus (“Team Ohio”) to host the terrestrial analog of the Starlab George Washington Carver Science Park. The analog laboratory, temporarily being housed in the Agricultural Engineering building, will be a replica of the Starlab space station science park and allows researchers to test missions and conduct parallel experiments on the ground. The research conducted at the GWCSP terrestrial lab will generate positive social, economic, educational, and quality-of-life outcomes for many constituents, particularly the Ohio agriculture community. Read more about the partnership and view the grand opening video on page five of this report.

Amid this period of exciting growth, FABE faculty have represented the department on a national and international scale and are working to address many of the issues of today. Judit Puskas gave the keynote address at the 2022 International Elastomer Conference and received the Ohio State Accelerator Award for novel technology commercialization. Darren Drewry’s research group was awarded membership into NASA’s ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) Science and Applications team for their project, “Remotely Sensing Crop Stress in the U.S. Corn Belt.” Lastly, Jay Martin was named the 2021-2022 Distinguished Professor of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. These are just a few of the several accomplishments of our outstanding faculty, which can be found on pages 6-9 of this report.

Not to be outdone, our students’ accomplishments, both inside and outside the classroom, fill us with pride as they continue to make a positive impact on society. Shannon Dixon, also a 2022 CFAES Distinguished Senor, placed first in the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in the “Earth and Beyond” category for her project centered around a 22-month experiment conducted in Oahu, Hawaii. In FABENG 3200S, our students are making a difference by researching, designing, and implementing projects for two local gardens. Finally, Construction Systems Management juniors Izzy Reed and Erin Michaels are working to develop a community for women in their major, forming the Association of Women in Construction. The numerous successes and stories of our students can be found on pages 16-25 of this report.

As we move forward into the upcoming academic year, I am confident that FABE can continue to grow and flourish, guided by our shared vision and collective dedication to excellence. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to our success and look forward to the exciting prospects that lie ahead.

At the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering The Ohio State University will serve as the lead partner

for the first-ever science park devoted to space research.

Voyager Space announced in January it selected a proposal from the university, the State of Ohio, JobsOhio, and One Columbus (“Team Ohio”) to host the terrestrial analog of the George Washington Carver Science Park (GWCSP) at the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. FACULTY AWARDS Puskas receives Ohio State Accelerator Award for novel technology commercialization Four projects led by College of

Engineering faculty – Perena Gouma, Judit Puskas, Jonathan Song and Alper Yilmaz – will receive funding via The Ohio State University Accelerator Awards.

The Accelerator Awards program is designed to spur the advancement of cutting-edge innovations from The Ohio State University into the marketplace. It provides grants of up to $150,000 to support external validation and de-risking activities to demonstrate commercial viability of a technology with the intent to license to an Ohio-based startup.

Administered through the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship, the program is funded by the university with matching funds from the Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Startup Fund.

“The recent Accelerator Award cycle saw another group of exciting technologies. We are delighted to be able to offer this critical, earlystage funding to our PIs, allowing them to perform proof of concept studies or create prototypes to quickly demonstrate the effectiveness of their technologies,” said Cheryl Turnbull, senior director of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship at Ohio State.

“By performing more of this work prior to a license agreement, we hope to increase the value and level of startup creation at Ohio State.”

Since the program launched in 2015, the Accelerator Awards have distributed over $5 million to 78 unique projects. These projects have led to 22 startup companies.

Puskas Selected as 2022 International Elastomer Conference Keynote Speaker Judit Puskas, professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University, has been selected as the keynote speaker for the upcoming International Elastomer Conference (IEC) in October. The IEC is an annual conference for the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society that brings together educators and industry under one roof.

“This recognition makes me very humble – it is a great feeling to be recognized.

I salute all the women in the rubber industry,” said Puskas.

Her keynote address will be titled “Natural Rubber – a Wonderful Renewable Resource for a Circular Economy,” which will discuss the future discoveries and innovations needed to create “the Silicon Valley of Rubber.”

Puskas’ research focuses on the integration of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment with breast reconstruction, in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic. In 2012, she was one of the five winners of the GE Healthymagination Breast Cancer Challenge Award, selected from 400 international applications.

She is the winner of the 2017 Charles Goodyear Medal, the most prestigious award given by the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society. She is a coinventor of the polymer coating on a coronary stent, implanted into over 10 million patients.

Chen, Clark, and Winston receive 2021-2022 Ohio State Energy Partners Awards

Each year, Ohio State Energy Partners contributes $810,00 to university or affiliated philanthropic causes. The Office

of Academic Affairs engages Ohio State faculty, staff and students through a request for proposals to advance important university priorities and promote interdisciplinary and community collaboration.

FABE Professor’s Group Selected for NASA’s ECOSTRESS Science and Applications Team Ohio State Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Assistant Professor Dr. Darren Drewry’s team was awarded membership into NASA’s ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) Science and Applications Team for their project titled, “Remotely Sensing Crop Stress in the U.S. Corn Belt.”

The ECOSTRESS instrument was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on June 29, 2018. The instrument is a multispectral thermal radiometer that can detect coincident thermal infrared (TIR) emission measurements of the Earth’s surface in five separate spectral bands, with the goal of understanding vegetation water use by quantifying terrestrial evapotranspiration.

The team’s project, “Remotely Sensing Crop Stress in the U.S. Corn Belt,” is designed to refine and develop new techniques of remotely sensing crop water stress and its precursors in the U.S. Corn Belt, which roughly spans from Oklahoma’s panhandle to North Dakota, and east to Ohio. This project will allow the team to develop novel methods to integrate ECOSTRESS and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observations into reliable satellite crop water stress detection techniques in the Corn Belt that will enable the best management of food, water, and energy systems in this important region.

The team is led by Dr. Brian Hornbuckle at Iowa State University and is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers at Iowa State. Dr. Drewry serves as the Ohio State University Site Principal Investigator (PI).

“This is a terrific opportunity to broaden the collaboration this group started a couple of years ago through our ongoing NASA SMAP Science Team project,” said Drewry. “This new project will allow us to expand our ongoing work to include the thermal infrared observations of ECOSTRESS, a critical satellite-based observation of stomatal behavior and indicator of vegetation water stress.”

The project is scheduled to begin in January 2023.

Martin Named 2021-2022 Distinguished Professor of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences

The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) has named three faculty, including Dr. Jay F. Martin as its 2021–2022 Distinguished Professors of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. Martin is a professor of ecological engineering in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE).

The honorific title, selected annually on a competitive basis among faculty members at the rank of full professor, recognizes excellent work and significant impact in fulfilling CFAES’ missions—teaching, research, outreach, and engagement.

“We congratulate these outstanding faculty members, and all of the nominees, for their impactful contributions—to their fields, to their students, to our college, university, and the public,” said Cathann A. Kress, Ohio State vice president for agricultural administration and CFAES dean. “They truly exemplify our vision of ‘We Sustain Life.’”

In addition to his role in FABE, Martin serves as faculty co-lead for Healthy Air, Land, and Water with Ohio State’s Sustainability Institute.

Martin seeks to use natural systems to improve water quality and increase sustainability. His research links field studies, watershed models, and socioeconomic analyses with stakeholder groups to investigate connections between downstream water quality and management practices in upstream watersheds.

Martin’s honors and awards include the 2019 CFAES Multidisciplinary Team Award, 2012 Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission Sustainability Award, 2009 International Award of Merit, 2005 Lumley Research Award, 2004 Price Department Advising Award, and 2003 Pomerene Departmental Teaching Award.

His work represents the best of transdisciplinary research— research that is integrated across disciplines and in partnership with stakeholders—and represents a hallmark of land-grant institutions.

Since 2000, Martin has been awarded more than $35 million to support his research program. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals. Several more articles are in review or press.

Winston Receives ASLA Honor Award The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) awarded Ohio State Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Assistant Professor Ryan Winston the Honor Award in the Research Category for Curbing Sediment: A Proof of Concept.

Winston worked with Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture Halina Steiner of the Knowlton School of Architecture. The project’s goal was to investigate the current design of the curb and to explore a new proposed design that captures pollutants and toxins before they enter the storm drain and waterways.

“Twenty-one redesigns were tested in triplicate and proved that redesigning curb, gutter, and apron standards can be a viable option to collecting pollutants on roadways, especially when done in concert with green infrastructure,” according to the report.

The awards jury noted that, “There are many places where landscape design offers new ways to address overlooked bits of infrastructure.

This is a significant contribution to materials-based research methods and could have a notable impact on cities and water quality.”

New Ohio State Collaboration with Advanced Drainage Systems Supports FABE Students and Research The Sustainability Institute at The Ohio State University has announced a new collaboration with Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) that will support water management research, enhance student learning and make campus more sustainable.

The company, a supplier of drainage products for residential, commercial, agriculture and infrastructure markets, is donating two state-ofthe-art stormwater management systems for the Innovation District on West Campus along with a cash gift to install them, as well as funds to support research and teaching opportunities. Additional parts of the gift will promote diversity and inclusion by supporting the Engineering House Learning Community and will help the university improve recycling on campus. The combined value of the product donation and cash gift exceeds $1 million.

“The new collaboration with ADS will greatly improve the way Ohio State manages stormwater runoff from new development in the Innovation District,” said Kate Bartter, executive director of the Sustainability Institute.

Stormwater management is a significant economic and environmental issue for new construction and redevelopment.

Stormwater runoff from developed areas carries numerous pollutants to lakes, rivers and oceans; often raises the temperature of the receiving surface water body, negatively affecting aquatic life; and deprives groundwater recharge through absorption of stormwater into the soil.

“The ADS systems will strengthen ecosystem services on campus, which is one of Ohio State’s sustainability goals,” Bartter said.

The collaboration draws attention to stormwater management at a time when climate change is exacerbating the issue by greatly increasing the number and intensity of storm events.

City and state regulations require new development to manage stormwater from heavy rainfall to avoid overflows in combined sewer and other stormwater systems that can spread bacteria and degrade streams. Proper stormwater management can also improve water quality, especially by trapping sediment.

The challenges posed by stormwater management are a powerful motivation for ADS, said Scott Barbour, ADS President and CEO. “Our reason is water, whether in an urban or rural setting,” he said. “We are pleased to be able to help Ohio State manage stormwater runoff at its new Innovation District with this donation.”

The company also plans to support research and teaching opportunities that will use the larger of the two stormwater

systems as a living laboratory for urban water management. This will benefit Ohio State faculty like Ryan Winston, assistant professor in the departments of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) and Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering and a core faculty member of the Sustainability Institute.

“Most people in urban areas don’t think about where their water comes from or where it goes because so much of the infrastructure is hidden underground,” Winston said. “The installation of the ADS system means that we can create hands-on opportunities for students to learn about sustainable water management outside the classroom.”

Winston is faculty adviser to a capstone team of FABE students who will design a rainwater harvesting system that would pump water stored in the ADS system and use it for landscape irrigation. The final report by the students will help inform opportunities for the university to recycle rainwater and reduce the amount of potable water it consumes.

Not only is ADS sponsoring the team, but its executive vice president for product development will also serve as a team adviser.

The management system holds rainwater runoff from buildings, pavement and other surfaces in a series of underground chambers that trap contaminants and then slowly releases the water into the city’s stormwater pipes.

Inducts Two Drainage Experts The Ohio State University’s

Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) recently hosted the 2022 International Drainage Hall of Fame awards ceremony, inducting two new members to this elite group of drainage experts. The event was held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, in conjunction with the 11th International Drainage Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa and was organized by the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS).

The International Drainage Hall of Fame Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and use of drainage in agricultural production. The award was established in 1979 at Ohio State in honor of the late Professor Virgil Overholt, who dedicated 42 years to education

and research on agricultural drainage in Ohio. The award is administered by the International Program for Water Management in Agriculture at Ohio State, Columbus, Ohio. Since 1979, 27 outstanding individuals have been inducted into the Drainage Hall of Fame for their noteworthy contributions to the advancement of agricultural drainage in the areas of teaching, Extension education, research, technology development, consulting, contractor training,

implementation and practice, and/or leadership.

Two individuals were inducted into the 2022 class of the International Drainage Hall of Fame for their outstanding contributions to the field: Dr. Dan Jaynes, former research soil scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and past SWCS member and JSWC author, and Charlie Schafer, president and owner of Agri Drain Corporation, and SWCS Corporate Partner.

Years of On-Farm Research In 2022, eFields finalized their latest eFields on-farm

research report. eFields is an Ohio State program dedicated to advancing production agriculture through the use of field-scale research. This program utilizes modern technologies and information to conduct onfarm research with an educational and demonstration component used to help farmers and their advisors understand how new practices and techniques can improve farm efficiency and profitability. The 2022 report contains 292 On-Farm Research Sites in 49 counties throughout Ohio.

Grain CART Program The goal of the Grain CART program is to deliver local educational training programs to reduce the number of confined space fatalities related to grain handling systems. There are two primary audiences of this FABE designed simulator.

The Grain Safety Awareness program teaches farmers, youth, and ag workers about the hazards of flowing grain and other safety concerns around grain bins. These rural audiences also learn how to respond in case of an emergency. Each year nearly 700 people participate in a Grain Safety Awareness program.

The Grain Bin Technical Rescue Training is focused on local fire departments to gain the knowledge to safely evaluate the hazards associated with grain bins and successfully extricate a trapped victim through a combination of classroom and handson training. Approximately 650 first responders receive technical training in the state.

Offered together, this comprehensive program offers valuable injury prevention and technical rescue training to reduce injuries and fatalities on Ohio farms.

Capstone Team Places 1st in 2022 AGCO National Student Design Competition A team of The Ohio State University

seniors majoring in food, agricultural and biological engineering (FABE) took home the gold in a national competition focused on the design of engineering projects advancing agriculture. The 2022 AGCO National Student Design Competition was a part of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) 2022 Annual International Meeting. Seven teams from five universities competed in the first phase of the competition, where only the top three were invited to the ASABE conference to deliver oral presentations about their design in the final phase.

Ohio State team members Katelyn Sang and Lindsey Shimoda represented their team which also included FABE students Emma Rand and Donny Smith. Their project was titled “Transpiration Control for Sustainable Deep Space Food Production.” The team was advised by Dr. Peter Ling and Dr. Jane Fife from the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Ohio State in collaboration with NASA. The team’s capstone project focused on transpiration control as an important component in growing fresh food for future deep space travel. The team developed a prototype system to demonstrate the materials and design of their final proposal, which they displayed as a part of their oral presentation in the competition.

The team also won one of this year’s FABE Capstone Communicator Awards for their project presentation at the FABE Annual Student Scholarship and Awards Banquet.

Distinguished Seniors The Distinguished Senior Award is the most prestigious undergraduate award in CFAES, recognizing the top graduating seniors from each of the academic units on the Columbus campus. The award honors students who exemplify the CFAES mission in areas such as academics and scholarship, research and innovation, service and involvement, and influence and leadership. In 2022, there were 25 distinguished seniors across the CFAES College, four of which were from the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE). FABE Student Places First in Denman Undergraduate Research Forum

Shannon Dixon Shannon Dixon, a senior

studying food, agricultural and biological engineering, placed first in her research category at the 27th annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. The Denman Forum provides an opportunity for graduating student researchers to share their research endeavors with the broader university community. This year, the forum included over 160 presentations from student researchers.

Shannon placed first in the “Earth and Beyond” category with her poster titled “The Effect of Long-term Temperature and pH Stress on Symbiodiniaceae Density in Montipora capitata, Porites

lobata, and Porites compressa Coral.” She presented the results of a 22-month experiment conducted in Oahu, Hawaii with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. The work was also recently published in a manuscript led by Dr. Rowan McLachlan.

“I had a great experience at the Denman,” said Shannon, who specializes in ecological engineering. “It was very fulfilling getting to share my research and it’s really helped cement my interest in going to graduate school.”

Shannon was also named a 2022 CFAES Distinguished Senior and FABE Outstanding Senior in recognition of her achievements as an undergraduate student at Ohio State. Shannon will be pursuing her PhD in Ohio State’s earth science program.

STUDENT ORG UPDATES

Over the last year, the CSM Club has been regaining its momentum within the program and has seen a consistent number of guest speakers and student attendees each week. Their primary focus has been exposing interested students to the construction industry through networking events with industry professionals from a variety of companies and sectors. These companies have included well-known national contractors as well as local construction companies, and our most prominent event was the Milwaukee Tool Demonstration in the autumn semester (pictured).

CSM Club Agricultural Systems Management Club’s mission is to give undergraduate

members across many diverse majors opportunities to network with industry professionals, perform community service projects, and assist in CFAES activities. The club recently welcomed Chris Tkach as their new advisor. Throughout the year the club is involved in various CFAES activities such as Back 2 School Bash, CFAES Ag Olympics, and the Celebration of Students. Outside of the college activities, the ASM club partakes in annual trips to Tremont, IL for the Precision Planting Winter Conference and Louisville, KY for the National Farm Machinery Show, supported by fundraisers such as the annual cut sunflower sale, food sales during Farm Science Review, and the lawn mower clinic.

The Association of Women in Construction at The Ohio State University

was created in November of 2022. The biggest goal of the club is to create a community where all women in construction can feel comfortable and better themselves through their shared experiences.

Being a brand-new club, we know this community will grow slowly, but we are confident it will grow. This past year was full of fun social events where members just got to know each other, such as the Spaghetti Tower Contest and the Papaya Painting Contest! In 2023, we plan on shifting to a more networking-heavy semester, giving members more tools to succeed.

FABENG 3200S Engineering for Community Development in Ohio

FABE Students Serve Columbus Community, Address Food Insecurity Engineers are problem solvers.

But when those problems are large systemic issues gripping society, answers and solutions require more than new technology, they require partnership, collaboration, and community.

In FABENG 3200S, Engineering for Community Development in Ohio, students learn about food security issues and initiatives in the Columbus community. Then, through partnerships with two local community gardens, students design, research, and implement on-site projects to support and advance these gardens. The course bridges these societal issues with ways in which they, as engineers, can form partnerships to address these problems locally.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for engineers to not only see how their engineering skills can fit into an issue like this, but also understand the context around their engineering work,” said Chris Ratcliff, a senior lecturer with the Departments of Engineering Education and Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University.

The course, which is an elective open to all engineering students as a part of the Humanitarian Engineering minor, has seen over 100 engineers through its curriculum since it began.

“As a first-year, the course laid down the path of how I want to take engineering and use my academics to help other people and serve other communities in need,” said Lilly Des Rosiers, who took FABENG 3200S in her second semester at Ohio State.

One of the gardens where students implement projects is the Charles Madison Nabrit Memorial Garden (CMNMG), which was founded in 2014. Paula Penn-Nabrit founded CMNMG as a form of “free grief therapy” after the passing of her husband, for whom the garden is named.

“It made sense to do a garden because he introduced me to gardening,” Penn-Nabrit recalls.

According to the USDA Economic Research Service, CMNMG sits in a low-income low-access urban food desert.

Ratcliff began at CMNMG as a volunteer before approaching PennNabrit about what was next for the garden.

“It was striking to me that Chris did not come with this posture of ‘I’m on the faculty, I have a Ph.D. in engineering, let me tell you what you need to be doing,’” said Penn-Nabrit.

“He was comfortable engaging on a peer level.”

Partnership lies at the heart of the course. Garden leaders like PennNabrit drive the collaboration with Ratcliff and his students.

“Being able to take that knowledge that we learned about how to be an effective community partner and kind of lace it through our engineering technical skills and coming in and being able to work hands-on with the community at their farm to help serve their needs so that we can better help the output of the farm was really cool,” said Des Rosiers. “It’s a very different way to implement technology and engineering.”

The FarmBot installed at CMNMG, something the average visitor might point out as something clearly engineering related and therefore an Ohio State project, was actually the idea of Penn-Nabrit and her sons.

Engineering students provided the initial support and continue to help maintain this technology on site.

“The Farmbot, first and foremost, serves as a really inspiring STEMeducation module in the garden for kids who come through a lot,” said Ratcliff. “This was something that our partners highlighted as the reason they were looking to install one of these.”

The “cross-pollination” as PennNabrit calls it between neighborhood kids and Ohio State engineering students has filled a community need.

When local children think of The Ohio State University, the football or basketball teams might come to mind first. Now, they have students in their neighborhood working for their community and supporting STEMeducation tools.

Driven by leadership from the community partners, students have worked on projects at these gardens including multi-stage composting, rainwater collection, solar energy generation, irrigation, automation, and advancing the capabilities of the CMNMG FarmBot. What began as an exercise in grief for Penn-Nabrit has grown, much like the plants in the garden, into something more: “I realized that this was something I started for myself, but it is something that has touched a need for other people too.”

For Des Rosiers, FABENG 3200S opened-up new ways of thinking and implementing engineering that she will take with her through the remainder of her studies at Ohio State: “There’s these opportunities you can take with engineering by implementing your own interests and trying to intersect love, and empathy, and your interest in service-learning; you’re able to help other people in a way I didn’t think possible.”

ASM MEET MARIA GOSHE Agriculture all the Way

Maria started looking into agronomy and agricultural systems management (ASM) here at Ohio State and decided to stick with ASM. “I like the hands on aspect. I didn’t know if I wanted to fully go into agronomy, but I liked the variety that ag systems had to offer.”

O

iutstanding Senior award irecipient Maria Goshe came to The Ohio State University in the fall of 2020, and quickly realized she made the best choice. Maria continued her education from Terra State Community College where she received her associates degree while majoring in agribusiness management in May 2020. Maria’s freshman year of college, she was able to complete her first internship with Heritage Cooperative which is when she realized she wanted to learn more.

“It was an agronomy-based internship, so I primarily scouted fields, collected soil and tissue samples, things like that. That was the internship that really led me to continue my education.”

Maria was also able to complete another internship with Heritage Cooperative at another location, this time focusing on grain operations.

With this internship, Maria was able to gain experience grading grain, testing for vomitoxin, and operating track mobiles.

Since 2019, Maria has been employed with Tiffin-Farmers Cooperative out of Tiffin, Ohio. Through her position as a general laborer, Maria has been a part of some pretty big changes to the facility. Along with completing secretarial duties, earning her CDL, hauling grain and fertilizer, and making custom feeds, Maria was a major contributor to the addition of the drive thru service that was added in.

“We took an old scale house that was used previously for storage on the property and turned it into a drivethru for our customers. I designed the

layout of the products and decided which products would be offered in the drive thru.”

Maria also jumped at the opportunity to add a touch of history to the project.

“I suggested that we incorporate a historical timeline to the side of the drive-thru so that when customers drove through, they would be able to learn about the history of the cooperative. It also proved to be a great opportunity to show how agricultural cooperatives add to the community.”

Throughout all her experiences, Maria has learned quite a bit. For other students, Maria suggests taking advantage of everything.

“Take advantage of all the opportunities CFAES provides. Join clubs, go on trips and explore these other industries because those chances aren’t going to come around as often once your graduated.”

When she isn’t working on her family’s farm, she enjoys being outdoors, drawing, painting and being with friends. Maria does not have any plans set in stone for after college, but she intends to work at an agricultural grain cooperative.

CSM MEET WINSTON MILTON

A Model of Involvement and Advancement “I wanted to get into the industry of building because I come from a construction family,” says Winston.

“So, when I stumbled upon construction systems management, it’s what I’ve always been looking for.”

J

unior construction systems management (CSM) major Winston Milton is certainly making the most of his experience at The Ohio State University. After transferring from Ohio University’s business school after his freshman year, Winston realized that he needed to start branching out and meeting new people.

“I wasn’t involved in anything at OU,” says Winston. “Coming to OSU, I also didn’t know anybody, so getting involved was integral to my success.”

After a brief time in the University Exploration major as a sophomore, his family background led him to the Department of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering (FABE) and the CSM major, which he realized was the perfect fit for him.

This past summer, his interests led him to an internship with Ruppert Landscape, a leading landscape contractor based in Laytonsville, Maryland, where he did landscape construction. Landscape construction, according to Winston, is a field that not many people focus on, as normally CSM tailors to the foundation and erection of the structure.

“I just went out on a limb and did something that I never knew was a part of construction,” says Winston.

“I learned a lot about plants and the outside of a building, which is still a part of the whole construction process.”

During the school year, there is never a day short of activities for Winston.

Along with studying CSM, he is pursuing a minor in military science, is the social outreach chair of the CSM Club, works a co-op for Lehman Daman Construction Services, and is a member of the U.S. Army ROTC at Ohio State. According to Winston, though, a busy schedule is what he prefers.

“I like to have a regiment and a scheduled routine,” says Winston. “I normally wake up at about 5 a.m. and go to PT (physical training). After that, I go home, shower, eat, and come back for 8 a.m. classes. After that I go to work most of the time or more classes, and later I’ll come back to the Ag. Lab to do homework and go to club meetings. I’ll usually get home at around 8 p.m., go to sleep, and do it all over again the next day.”

Although he jokes that he doesn’t have a lot of free time, Winston believes that getting involved on campus is necessary to be successful in college and beyond, and it’s a large part of what helped him create memorable experiences at Ohio State.

“In real life, you’re going to meet people and need networks and work with a team,” says Winston. “Get out of your comfort zone. It’s not hard once you start, and it’s actually a lot more fun than you think.”

Moving forward, Winston’s plans outside CSM include commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army and continuing his involvement on campus. In the construction industry, Winston wants to make a meaningful impact by creating environmentally beneficial buildings, and eventually start his own property management firm.

FABE MEET ABBY OBERT

Adventures in the World of Drainage “It was meant to be. I looked to my mom and was like ‘I’ve never heard that before, I need to know more’. I talked to the tour guide after, and it was settled.”

O

utstanding Senior award urecipient Abby Obert was born and raised in the Columbus area and is graduating this spring from The Ohio State University with her degree in food, agricultural and biological engineering. Abby specializes in ecological engineering and minors in humanitarian engineering, which has led her to several unique opportunities. m

While Abby is from the area, she didn’t necessarily know she wanted to attend Ohio State. Abby knew she wanted to be in engineering, and that she loved the environment, so she originally was looking into environmental engineering. While on at tour at Ohio State, Abby’s tour guide explained that she was studying in ecological engineering in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE).

Last summer, Abby held an internship with Allen Soil and Water Conservation District as a water resources intern. Abby, along with the other intern, spent the summer dressed in waders, treading through the Ottawa River. Their job was to walk the river and GPS the exact location of the pipes, the sizes, types and direction of the pipes. If there was flowing water, they would collect a sample to test for nitrates, phosphorus, chlorine and the pH. Several times, Abby and the other intern would have to collect water samples to send to the EPA for discoloring.

“It wasn’t exactly engineering related, but I think it was really beneficial to see how a government agency works.

I also gained a lot of knowledge with the water resource side, dealing with all of the pipe’s systems.”

In the spring of 2020, Abby took a service-learning course with Dr. Chris Ratcliff. This was the first semester FABENG 3200S Engineering and Community Development was offered at Ohio State, which allowed Abby to gain valuable experience making relationships for future projects the course would be completing.

After taking the course, Abby realized she wanted to minor in humanitarian engineering.

“I ended up really liking both of those classes, and after talking to the minor advisor and realizing they both counted toward the minor, it just clicked. I realized social justice and water security are so intertwined, you really can’t have one without the other. They just complement each other so well.”

For incoming students, Abby suggests finding opportunities early. “Don’t stress about your path, not everybody has a straight line to where they are going to end up. Try to get an internship or research position really early on and that will open a lot of doors. Even if you don’t like every experience, you can then start crossing things of your list and get a type of gauge of where you want to end up and the kind of work you want to do.”

When it comes to her placement after college, Abby has recently accepted a position as the drainage project engineer in training at the Franklin County Engineers Office.

CAPSTONE 2022 DESIGN Each year, students majoring in agricultural systems management or food, agricultural and biological engineering complete a year-long senior capstone design project. These projects, sponsored by industry partners, offer students an opportunity to apply all they have learned during their time at Ohio State to a real world problem. Using teamwork, collaboration, time management, and problem-solving skills, students have designed ecosystem restoration for wetlands, solutions for food processors to claim wastewater and developed simulations to help farmers.
