IMPACT REPORT 2021

Back to Campus. Back to Tradition. Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues, The Ohio

State University returned much of its operations from virtual to in-person settings in Autumn of 2021. Through testing protocols and mask mandates, along with a high vaccine adoption rate across campus, students, faculty, and staff found safe methods for bringing back beloved on campus traditions and in-classroom experiences across campus. The university celebrated the return of students to campus, and for the first time welcomed the classes of 2024 and 2025 to campus for the first time. The Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) celebrated the return of students with a department open house, joining units from across the College of Engineering in the Welcome Back Block Party. With FABE students, faculty, and staff on campus, labs, classes, activities, club meetings, service events, and more resumed their normal schedule, and in some cases expanded accessibility through virtual offerings. We were excited to return to the traditions that help make our Buckeye community strong.

Letter from the Chair Dear Alumni and Friends, Welcome to the 2021 Ohio State FABE Impact Report. Over the past two years, we have seen a lot of changes in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) as we revectored to meet the needs of our constituents while doing so in a safe and healthy manner. Over the past calendar year, these changes restored many of our services and activities from virtual to in-person settings. This year has been filled with excitement as we reunite in person with peers and colleagues after seeing them from behind Zoom screens for too long. This year has also marked some faculty changes in FABE. In the spring, I announced the appointment of Dr. Lingying Zhao as Associate Chair of Research for FABE, where she will support the number of large interdisciplinary proposals and industry partnerships that enhance our research mission. We also welcomed Cherish Vance to our faculty from Texas A&M. Cherish will further enhance our collective research expertise in water resource engineering, including hydrologic modeling of constituent fate and transport at the watershed level. Unfortunately, Dr. Margaret Kalcic opted to leave Ohio State in pursuit of new opportunities, for which we wish her the best. Beyond these personnel changes, our faculty were recognized at the university and national levels. Dr. Ajay Shah and Dr. Katrina Cornish swept the 2021 CFAES Distinguished Faculty Awards with the Junior Faculty Research Award and Senior Faculty Research Award, respectively. Dr. Judit Puskas was formally inducted into the National Academy of Inventors, joining their 2020 class of fellows and being initiated during their 2021 meeting. Dr. V.M. ‘Bala’ Balasubramaniam had a banner year, being recognized with the 2021 IFT Achievement Award and being appointed to the USDA NAREEE in the spring. You can read about all of these achievements and more on pages 6-9 of this report. Despite the virtual nature of much of our work this year, our faculty and extension specialists ensured our Ohio constituents remained up to date with the latest information disseminated via our extension and outreach focus areas. Virtual webinars seemed to be the theme of 2021, with FABE hosting nine workshops and seminar series through Zoom, YouTube, and other platforms. I also want to congratulate the eFields On Farm Research program for publishing their 5th annual report. This year, eFields contains over 249 trials held in over half of Ohio’s counties.

You can access these webinars and the eFields report on page 10 and 11 of this report. Amid all of these achievements, our students are also not to be outdone. As with last year, we recognized nine students with FABE Outstanding Senior Awards, with four of these students selected to receive the CFAES Distinguished Senior Award. Their stories of achievement and perseverance are sure to inspire and impress. These are but a handful of our students who will become future industry leaders. Beyond our seniors, we were excited to see our student clubs and organizations back on campus holding in person meetings and activities. In particular, I want to recognize our FABE Graduate Student Organization for their efforts to welcome our new graduate students to campus and provide a strong sense of community across FABE. This year, they maintained a strong calendar of events and passive programs to ensure all FABE graduate students felt welcomed back to campus, but also had the resources they needed to succeed. I encourage everyone to read up on the success stories of our students on pages 12 through 17 of this report. With 2021 drawing to a close, we continue to look forward to a bright future for FABE. Certainly, the past two years have been filled with challenges. We successfully navigated those uncharted waters emerging as a more flexible and nimble organization. I believe I share the sentiment of the students, faculty, and staff in FABE that the future is hopeful as we return to a new normal, taking with us all we have learned from this tumultuous period and preparing us to meet and solve even grander challenges beyond. Regards,

Scott. A. Shearer, Ph.D., P.E. Professor Chair

Riding for Farmers Who Can’t Austin Heil, a 2009 graduate of the Agricultural Systems Management program, supported Ohio AgrAbility this year through his annual charity bike ride Cursive Ohio Below: a map of the Cursive Ohio ride route supporting Ohio AgrAbility

After a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run, Austin Heil wanted more.

Not more on the actual day in 2016 he finished Ohio’s half Ironman race, the Ironman 70.3 Ohio. On that day, he needed sleep and a lot of food. But weeks after getting to the finish line, he wanted to do a group ride with some of the people he bonded with along the course. People who swam and biked and ran alongside him.

organized a bike ride near his northwest Ohio farm in Kenton. And just to make the ride really interesting, he mapped out a course that would form a handwritten “Ohio.” Using a Garmin app, he clicked around. “I started looking at the roads to try to figure out where I could put an ‘Ohio,’ where it would actually work. It took me a few weeks.”

Meet Kaylee Presnell: NASA Space Crop Production Intern

Though California native Kaylee

Presnell has snorkeled with sharks, she has her eyes on goals millions of miles above the sea. Kaylee is a fifthyear food, agricultural and biological engineering major at The Ohio State University. Specifically, Kaylee specializes in biological engineering following the biosystems track, where her interests have led her from working within local community gardens all the way to an internship with NASA. Kaylee decided to study biological engineering in her sophomore year. Her first two internships were in the manufacturing sector, first with a defense company and then with a private food corporation. However, these experiences led her to realize she was more interested in research. As a student in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE), capstone is a requirement for graduation. Capstone projects are a chance for students to work on a team of peers to get handson experiences solving real-world problems in partnership with outside companies or agencies. One such partnership is between Ohio State and NASA, offering a chance for students

16

to participate in the eXploration Systems and Habitation Academic Innovation Challenge (X-Hab). In August 2020, Kaylee joined a team whose project would be the Deep Space Food Challenge. “We had to write a proposal and design a novel solution to something in space, specifically that can enable you to grow or produce palatable nutritious safe food.” Kaylee said. “Teams came from within the industry or universities, most of my team consisted of Ohio State students” Kaylee continued to work on this project through the summer. “A lot of my summer was just doing research, literature reviews and kind of like gauging what space culture really is.” This challenge was overseen by Dr. Peter Ling, Associate Professor in FABE. Dr. Jane Fife, FABE capstone instructor and Dr. Chieri Kubota, Professor of controlled environment agriculture for the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science also helped oversee this project, which was a collaboration between the NASA, the Canadian Space Agency and the Privy Council Office.

“I was very interested in hydroponics and vertical farming and then I realized that you could do it in space and it’s kind of spiraled.” Kaylee was first introduced to hydroponics systems during the spring of 2021, where she took a service-learning course with Dr. Chris Ratcliff. The course, FABENG 3200-S Engineering and Community Development, focuses on the causes of food insecurity and how partnerships can bring about community-focused solutions. For example, Kaylee and her classmates built a hydroponic rainwater collection system for a community garden in Columbus. “It was probably one of my favorite classes I’ve ever taken.” Kaylee said. “It’s very tied into what I do now, in a way. That was low-tech hydroponic systems but in the same realm of controlled agriculture.” From these low-tech solutions to local problems, Kaylee now works with controlled agriculture in her internship with NASA. In August 2021, Kaylee began work as a space crop production intern. She works with

experts whose mission is to grow vegetation in space, specifically for NASA’s transit mission to Mars “A lot of what I do specifically at NASA is trying to push the agenda for getting crops, not just plants on long duration missions.” Kaylee explains that one of NASA’s main issues, is supplying food for the 3-year mission to Mars, since they cannot utilize prepackaged food for a mission of that length. While the idea of growing crops in space is great, there are certain obstacles in the way, one being getting water to the crops.

“I was very interested in hydroponics and vertical farming and then I realized that you could do it in space and it’s kind of spiraled.” “It's really hard to deliver water in space because of microgravity. That would be a gap is figuring out how to get water to plants efficiently or figuring out what the right lighting treatment is.” Kaylee knows it is going to be a lot of work to get exactly where she wants to be but she is also determined to make room for some play along the way.

In the meantime, Kaylee encourages her peers that it is ok to take the path less traveled and expand their horizons.

Above: Kaylee (left) with fellow students at one of the community garden sites for FABENG 3200-S

Meet Our Students We invite you to read more of our student stories and meet more of our incredible undergraduate and graduate students across all of our programs.

“You look at our career fairs and it’s either huge consulting companies or manufacturing and it’s ok if you don’t like that stuff. Research is always around.”

“I love to go scuba diving. I’ve been to Bora Bora, Turks and Caicos, Hawaii and the Dominican Republic. Eventually I want to dive with sharks.”
