Together as Buckeyes In March, The Ohio State University swiftly moved face-to-

face classes and work to virtual settings. At the time, these proactive measures were established to prevent illness and allow the important work of the university to continue.

Together as Buckeyes, the Ohio State community worked to put the safety and health of the community first, and continues to do so.

In July, the Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website was launched, providing resources for those continuing to work or learn virtually and for those preparing to resume limited in person operations. Above all, the safety and health of the Buckeye community remained of paramount importance. This key resource has evolved to continue to provide the latest information to the Buckeye community as the pandemic continues to evolve. Ohio State remains committed to keeping its community safe by continually updating guidelines to reflect the latest state and federal mandates and the latest research.

Letter from the Chair Dear Alumni and Friends, Welcome to the Ohio State FABE Impact Report. As with much of the world, 2020 was a year of unprecedented tribulation. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges to conducting our work in education, research, and outreach. Together, the students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) rose to meet these challenges in admirable fashion.

Even before the pandemic transformed the way Ohio State operated, the FABE community was struck with the loss of Don Schafer, a beloved lecturer in our Construction Systems Management (CSM) program. For the past several years, Don had been instrumental in the instruction and advising of our CSM students. We were honored to host a Celebration of Life for Don in early March with members of Don’s family and the CSM community. Don was also awarded the 2020 IPAG Outstanding Staff Teacher Award posthumously, recognizing his many years of contribution to FABE. Weeks later, Ohio State operations swiftly transitioned to virtual settings as the scope of the pandemic set in.

Together as Buckeyes, the Ohio State community came together to ensure safety while also maintaining as much of the Ohio State experience as possible. As classes and work moved on line in mid-March, our faculty, staff, and students adapted with great aptitude amid such uncertainty. There were new learning curves for all. Yet I am happy to report that we continued to carry out many of our traditional annual experiences virtually.

As is common when new challenges arise, the FABE community rose to meet them. Critical research was performed to address various aspects of the pandemic by faculty such as Dr. Judit Puskas and Dr. Ryan Winston.

Dr. Puskas worked to meet the needs of the meat packing industry by developing a new anti-microbial polymer face mask. Dr. Winston joined a university team tracking COVID-19 through campus and Columbus wastewater to

identify COVID-19 outbreaks before infected individuals would show symptoms. Students like undergraduate Christopher Tkach started a non-profit to 3D print face shields for frontline workers desperately in need of protection. I want to thank all who continue to work to make a meaningful difference in the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Even amid the impacts of COVID-19, the FABE community celebrated many other accomplishments. Several of our faculty members received key awards and recognitions, including Dr. Darren Drewry (ORAU Powe Award) and Dr. Katrina Cornish (AIMBE Fellow); these and other faculty awards are outlined on pages 6-7 of this report. We have also included the stories of some of our undergraduate and graduate students, whose compelling journeys to their goals are sure to inspire. You can read these stories on pages 12-19.

Though the future continues to hold uncertainly, I know it is bright due to our commitment to excellence in the FABE community. The work of FABE scholars and students has proven critical to the global challenges of the past year, and so I know our contributions to the world will continue as we find our new normal. The FABE family remains committed to bettering the systems that sustain life.

FACULTY AWARDS Drewry receives ORAU Powe Award Darren Drewry, Assistant Professor in

the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering has been named the recipient of the 2020 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

ORAU provides technical and innovative scientific solutions to advance the United States’ national priorities in security, health, science, and education. Through specialized teams of experts, unique laboratory capabilities, and access to a group of more than 100 major Ph.D-granting institutions, ORAU works with local, state, federal, and commercial customers to advance national priorities to serve the public interest.

“It was an honor to be selected as one of the two nominees from Ohio State University to compete for a Powe Award this year, and I feel very fortunate to have received this award from ORAU,” said Drewry.

Drewry explained that simulationassisted breeding has tremendous potential to quickly advance crop improvement to help meet future food and energy security goals. This award will allow Drewry to collaborate with Dr. Daniel Jacobson of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to integrate his prior work in vegetation biophysical simulation with the phenotypic information emerging from modern genomic selection approaches.

The award grants seed funding for research and professional growth to junior faculty members at ORAU institutions. Winners receive a one-year $5,000 research grant, which is matched by the home institution.

Drewry is one of just 35 recipients of this year’s national award.

Cornish Inducted into Medical and Biological Engineering Elite The American Institute for Medical

and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the induction of Katrina Cornish, Ph.D., Endowed Chair and Ohio Research Scholar, Bioemergent Materials, Horticulture and Crop Science/Agricultural and Biological Engienering, The Ohio State University to its College of Fellows.

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineer.

Dr. Cornish was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for “high-performance, natural allergy-safe latex for medical and consumer products, supporting developing countries.”

Puskas Named Inaugural CFAES Distinguished Professor The Ohio State University College

Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) has announced four inaugural Distinguished Professors of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, including Dr. Judit Puskas of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE).

The title was bestowed on a competitive basis to four full professors who have excelled in teaching, research, or outreach/engagement. In addition, their work has significantly impacted their fields, students, college, university, and/or the public.

Puskas is internationally recognized for her outstanding accomplishments in biopolymer and biomaterial invention and green engineering implementation, in both industry and medicine. She is one of the co-inventors of the biocompatible polymer for the Taxus coronary stent, which has been implanted in over 6 million patients. She complements her research with extensive teaching and outreach, and brings globally recognized stature in her field to Ohio State.

Zhao and Chen receive Ohio State Outreach and Engagement Award The OSU Green Home Technology

Center was recently announced as recipients of a 2020 Community Engaged Program Award from The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement. The team is led by Lingying Zhao and Victoria Chen, both faculty in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

The Community Engaged Program Award recognizes outstanding achievement by faculty, staff and/or student led programs/initiatives focused on community-university partnerships and impact.

“Our green home team has been very passionate about our collaborations with many community partners in promoting green home designs and technology applications in Ohio,” says Zhao. “This award will encourage us to seek more collaboration opportunities to promote green homes in Ohio through research, education, and outreach and engagement programs.”

w e AN Kind of Mask Ohio State researching, testing polymer face masks to protect against COVID-19

While many people are encouraged

and, in some cases, mandated to wear face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, there are some complaints that have become a common refrain: the mask doesn’t fit correctly, it’s uncomfortable, it’s too hot, or the mask is hard to breathe through.

However, a material scientist at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) is working to change that.

Judit Puskas is in the final stages of developing a new polymer face mask that she expects will be more effective in the fight against COVID-19. Puskas, who is a Distinguished Professor in polymer science in the CFAES Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, has a provisional patent application pending for the mask she is developing.

She’s working with the Mayo Clinic to create and test the mask to meet the same safety and efficacy standards of an N95 mask, but with more comfort and usability for the wearers. Puskas’ mask is made of a nonwoven fabric comprised of biocompatible rubber composite formed into a fiber mat that can be used to create personal protective equipment including face masks.

The goal, she said, is to offer alternatives to the current market of N95 masks that can be used by workers in a wider variety of conditions and situations.

“The current N95 masks protect against the virus, but most people say the masks aren’t comfortable and aren’t easily breathable,” Puskas said.

“There are other polymer fiber mats used in N95-equivalent masks, but they are based on rigid plastics and don’t offer much flexibility.

“The material I’ve developed is a flexible, breathable rubber, that can be made into comfortable-fitting masks. Additionally, it’s water repellant, doesn’t allow sneeze particles through, nor will it let moisture build up on the mask from breathing. This rubber can also be used in hot, humid conditions as well as in a freezer, can be easily sterilized in water-based solutions, and is recyclable for multiple reuse.”

It’s for those reasons that Puskas’ masks, once completed, will be tested by more than 100 workers in five meat processing plants across Ohio to gauge the masks’ effectiveness

for agricultural workers in hot, humid conditions.

CFAES researchers including Lyda Garcia, an assistant professor of meat science, Mary Rodriguez, assistant professor of community leadership, and Joy Rumble, assistant professor of agricultural communication, are working with meat processors statewide to determine the barriers workers face when considering masks as personal protective equipment to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19.

The team is also researching workers’ perceptions about wearing personal protective equipment to better understand why some choose not to wear it. The team’s goal is to develop strategies to get more workers to change their perception of masks and to choose to wear them, Rodriguez said.

This comes as meat packing plants nationwide are continuing to see spikes in COVID-19 infections. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, there have been some 20,400 COVID-19 infections across 216 meat packing plants in 33 states, with at least 74 deaths, according to reporting by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meat and poultry processing industry, which is an essential component of the U.S. food infrastructure, employs approximately 500,000 people nationwide, many of whom work in close proximity to other workers, often in hot, humid conditions.

Ohio meat processors reached out to Garcia, who is also an Ohio State University Extension meat science specialist, and her team for help in determining solutions for personal protective equipment, including understanding what works and how to encourage workers to wear personal protective equipment such as face masks, Garcia said. OSU Extension is the outreach arm of CFAES. Garcia said the conversations with meat processors helped her team realize that understanding employee behavior and attitudes about wearing personal protective equipment such as masks would be valuable in helping Puskas modify and adjust her mask design.

“Understanding employee behavior, attitudes, and leadership is critical when designing personal protective equipment,” she said. “The most common complaint among workers is that masks are uncomfortable, tend to move and slip off, and they have to keep adjusting them.

Puskas demonstrates the flexibility and comfort of her new polymer mask “Another drawback is that workers say it’s difficult to breathe in masks in hot, humid conditions while constantly moving, and they don’t like breathing in their own carbon dioxide that is trapped in the masks in those conditions.”

Additionally, Garcia said, with the fans and the air conditioning noise in the plants, workers say wearing masks makes it harder to communicate with each other, which could be a safety issue considering the sharp knives and tools they use.

“Also, these workers are on their feet eight hours a day, wearing hair nets, safety glasses, with some men having long beards, then you add a mask and you can see where things can become more complicated fast on top of just wearing the mask,” she said. “At the end of the day, it’s about working with employees to encourage them to wear personal protective equipment.

“Not only will it serve to protect the food, but it will help keep the employees safe and healthy, and in turn, will keep them working to provide a wholesome, sound, high-quality product.”

Health in 2010 to further develop the technology to create a safer breast implant, one that is less likely to leak silicone. This polymer material also reduces the risk of inflammation in the tissue surrounding the implant, which often leads to painful tissue contraction and rupture of the implant.

When the coronavirus pandemic first hit the United States, Puskas wanted to do whatever she could to help lessen the spread of the virus.

“When medical experts first advocated that people wear masks to flatten the curve and lessen the spread of COVID-19, I immediately knew that my polymer material would be good for masks,” she said. “My polymers have already been used in cardiovascular stents that have been used in more than 6 million patients.

“It’s a very good feeling when you do research and it ends up saving people’s lives.”

That’s one of many reasons why Puskas was compelled to develop a mask using the biocompatible rubber composite fiber mat she created as a way to add comfort, flexibility, and breathability to the N95 mask market.

Since 2004, Puskas has helped develop polymer-based materials and coatings for use in medical devices and other industries. She received funding from the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of

Distinguished Seniors The Distinguished Senior Award is the most prestigious undergraduate award in CFAES, recognizing the top graduating seniors from each of the academic units on the Columbus campus.

There were 25 Distinguished Seniors across the CFAES College, five of which were from the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE). One of the hallmarks of CFAES is an emphasis on student success, and it is heartwarming to see it exemplified through the accomplishments of our students.

ASSAD AHMAD

MATTHEW KLOPFENSTEIN

Ahmad earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Basrah (Basrah, Iraq) and worked extensively in the construction industry prior to attending Ohio State. He is well known for his perseverance and work ethic, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, despite navigating moving to a new country, working full time, and raising a family.

He cites his mentors Anastasia Britt and Jeff Suchy, for assisting him.

Klopfenstein completed multiple internships, including one with 360 Yield Center, Precision Planting, and Kuhn North America Brodhead. He also served as a research assistant to Dr. Scott A. Shearer in FABE. After graduation he will begin his engineering career working for CNH Industrial as a hydraulic engineer.

Construction Systems Management

During his time at Ohio State Ahmad has earned many honors, including the Dean’s List, Central Ohio Associated General Construction Scholarship, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and also earned Dean’s List at CSCC. He hopes to work for a major engineering or construction firm after graduation and aspires to one day own his own company.

Klopfenstein cites his time with the Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Team as some of his most valuable undergraduate experience. Outside of QST, Klopfenstein was also involved in CFAES Ambassadors, ASABE Club, Alpha Zeta Partners Professional Fraternity, and FarmHouse Fraternity.

He also boasts a variety of honors and accomplishments, including FarmHouse International Fraternity President of the Year, SPHINX Senior Class Honory, New Face of ASABE, Dean’s List, Jerry Minore Memorial National Wheat Foundation Scholar, American FFA Degree Recipient, Agriculture Future of America Leadership Conference Delegate, and Joe-Leiser Memorial Ag-Credit Scholar.

Matthews completed three internships, with Mercer Landmark, Kenn-Feld Group, and Precision Planting. After graduation he plans to return to his family farm to work full time.

Matthews is excited to apply his new knowledge to help increase the farms’ sustainability through differing conservation practice and costeffective measures. He also hopes to expand the farm’s acreage and branch into beef cattle farming.

He was active in a variety of organizations, including Agricultural Systems Management Club, Crops and Soils Club, Alpha Zeta Partners, and CFAES Student Council. He was also a member of the Van wert County Young Ag Professionals and attended the Ohio Farm Bureau Young Ag Professional Conference, National FFA New Century Farmer Conference, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He also received many honors, including Dean’s List, CFAES Newcomb Scholar, R.D. Barden Scholarship, Consolidated Grain and Barge Scholarship, and the Paul H. Rofkar Scholarship.

Mezzopera is a member of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program and has spent hundreds of hours doing community service for OSU and Columbus through his undergrad. He was also involved with the StudentAlumni Council and cites it as the most enjoyable and rewarding experience of his undergraduate career. Mezzopera has received many honors, including Dean’s List, OSU Provost Scholarship, CFAES Newcomb Scholar, Ohio Contractors Association Scholarship, SMPS Columbus Scholarship, and Simpson Strong-Tie Scholarship.

Tietje served as the president of the Agricultural Systems Management Club, leading them to win the CFAES Student Organization of the Year award. He identifies his time as president as the most rewarding experience of undergrad. Prior to president he also served in various officer roles for the organization.

Outside of ASM Club, Tietje was an active member of the CFAES Student Council and the Crops of Soils Club.

He receives a variety of honors as well, including Dean’s List, Edward S. “Beanie” Drake Student Leader Endowment Fund Scholarship, Ohio Soybean Council Foundation Scholarship, and the Ohio State University Provost Scholarship.

After graduation he plans to continue pursuing a career in the residential building sector.

Tietje also completed two internships, one with Ohio at Legacy Farmers’ Cooperative and one with Redline Equipment. He also helped with the FABE Precision Agriculture research in data collection. He used these experiences to launch his own business with his brother, Buckeye Advanced Ag, LLC, which sells and distributes seeds.

Shay Pond Looking to Create Beneficial Change for Communities For Shay Pond, a fourth-year majoring in agricultural

systems management (ASM) with minors in agribusiness and nonprofit management, creating a positive generational change is a dream of his. Pond is interested in exploring ways to address food and financial security issues for lower income families in hopes to start a nonprofit organization.

Pond first got interested in food and financial security during a prompt for a project in his professional development class, where he researched and learned how critical the issue of food security is. His inspiration on the financial side stemmed from his own experiences and author Dave Ramsey.

Although Pond’s career interests in food and financial security may not be a common path for ASM students, he has been able to find courses in the major curriculum and electives centered on his passion.

“I was attracted to the diversity of skills ASM offered as part of their curriculum and ability to craft your own educational goals within the program,” he said.

As a first-generation college student from northwest Ohio, Pond’s first introduction to the ASM program at Ohio State was through Ohio FFA. During a career development event featuring the agricultural education and ASM programs, he discovered the opportunity to learn a broad variety of skills while majoring in ASM. With a variety of interests and experiences, Pond has been able to network, make connections and learn how leadership looks different in various industries. Experiences such as working in a professional moving industry, ministry as a youth ministry intern, working at a seed production facility and a food production company are just the few places that have equipped him with these skills.

Pond has also found time to gain valuable skills through involvement on campus, such as serving as an Ambassador for the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). He is currently a co-chair of the team for the Fall 2020 semester.

The CFAES Ambassador team is a team of students that give prospective students an overview and tour of campus, share their personal experiences and answer questions these future buckeyes may have. The ambassador team are liaisons to the Ohio State student body in order to expand awareness of CFAES. “I’ve gained an appreciation for the diversity of experiences and diversity of backgrounds students bring to Ohio State. We really have such a diverse and expanse body of students as the cornerstone college of Ohio State,” Pond said. “I’ve met a lot of great people being on the team including so many faculty and administrators here at Ohio State. I even had the opportunity to speak with Governor DeWine at an event last fall working for the CFAES Ambassador team.”

Along with being an ambassador and serving as co-chair, he is also a small group leader on the north side of campus for Cru, a Christian student organization at Ohio State. Cru has

Pond served as a CFAES ambassador, representing the ASM major and the department as a whole to new and prospective students given Pond the opportunity to build friendship and community here at Ohio State and the chance to travel missionary to Brazil in 2019.

Pond believes that by finding an area you are truly passionate about and pursing it honestly and wholeheartedly, you cannot go wrong in life. His advice to other students who struggle with career choices is to find a problem you’re passionate about and center your education around that problem to best help you in solving it. Pond poses the questions ‘What drives you? What gets you out of bed in the morning?’

Pond is currently pursuing an internship for next summer and focusing on his post-graduation plans shortly after. He is on track to graduation in December 2021, where afterwards he hopes to obtain a job in industry and later begin attending seminary part-time.

Brady Jackson 2020 CFAES Internship Award Recipient

“I learned a lot about the design

process and developed an appreciation for what architects do, but I couldn’t see myself spending a lifetime doing that,” says Brady Jackson, a senior in the construction management (CSM) program.

Brady started his academic journey as an architecture major at the University of Cincinnati, but now believes that he has finally found his intended career path. A belief that was further solidified as he interned with George J. Igel & Company, a heavy/civil construction company whose services include earthwork, piling and shoring, concrete, utilities and soil stabilization.

Brady secured his internship by attending the Construction Career Expo hosted by the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Over 70 companies attend this annual career fair, looking for students like Brady, who are interested in pursuing opportunities in the construction industry.

At Igel, Brady’s responsibilities included tracking quantities,

filling out applications, attending progress meetings and learning about the preparation process for new construction projects. Brady also communicated closely with superintendents, foreman, suppliers and owners to manage small landslide repairs and other job assignments.

“There is a great deal of work and detail that goes into each heavy civil project,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed learning more about and being a part of the construction process.”

One of Brady’s biggest takeaways was the role communication plays in managing a project. “The necessity of communication on a construction project is essential, and without it, you won’t get the job done,” he said.

For Brady, this lesson in communication has helped him bridge the gap between students and professional organizations. In his current role as an ambassador for the Associated Students of Construction, Brady works with the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and Associated General Contractors of

America (AGC) organizations to create opportunities that help better prepare Ohio State students for entrance into the construction industry.

His dedication to his internship and the CSM program has not gone unnoticed.

Brady was named a recipient of this year’s CFAES Internship Award, an award presented to students who have excelled at internships within their respective fields of study.

After graduation, Brady hopes to secure a job at Igel and start his career in the construction industry. Despite the uncertainty of his plans, he knows that he will be successful thanks to the experiences he’s had at Ohio State and with the CSM program.

“While my aspirations for my future are great, I am beginning to realize that time is a valuable commodity,” Brady said. “I am enjoying my time at Ohio State and being in the CSM program, but I am looking forward to what my future holds post-graduation.”

Lindsay West A Food Engineer with a Global Perspective

Lindsay West, a recent graduate of The Ohio State

University, discovered the opportunities of her future through a survey course during her freshmen year. She came to Ohio State as engineering undecided and was overwhelmed by the many options. The food engineering specialization helped her focus on her interests and discover a new field. Throughout her time studying at Ohio State, she developed a tremendous amount of skills in engineering.

“I have a clear vision of what I can do with my degree, but also understand various engineering disciplines, including electrical, mechanical and chemical. Due to the wide variety of courses required in the FABE program!” says Lindsay.

Lindsay graduated in May with a degree in food, agricultural and biological engineering with a specialization in food engineering and a minor in humanitarian engineering.

Last May, Lindsay accepted an internship at Burns & McDonnell, an engineering consulting firm in the food and consumer products group. As an Engineering Intern, she spent the summer learning about the consulting industry, the process of designing facilities and plant expansions for various consumer products. From there, she was offered a position as an Assistant Mechanical Engineer at the world headquarters in Kansas City.

After graduation, Lindsay will start her role as a Assistant Mechanical Engineer at Burns & McDonnell. Traveling has always been a part of Lindsay’s life. Growing up, her family valued learning about many different cultures both in and out of the country. Coming from a small, rural town

in Connecticut, Lindsay has advocated for a strong sense of community all throughout her life. These experiences influenced the way she views the world and people. Her passion for traveling eventually developed into a purpose to help others.

“The trips and projects I have been involved with have helped me to gain a clear understanding of my values, and my potential as an engineer to do more projects in developing countries.”

In August 2019, Lindsay joined the Maji Marwa Senior Capstone Design Project. She strived to embody the humanitarian endeavors that came with the year-long project. Lindsay worked in the classroom on the first phase of designing a water distribution system. From this experience, she has had the opportunity to create real world solutions that improve the lives of many people.

Lindsay says, “This experience is not only personally gratifying, but it has a ripple effect within the local community freeing up time to engage in other productive endeavors like education, farming and starting small businesses.”

Traveling has always been a major part of Lindsay’s lifeHer most memorable experience from this project has been seeing the end-ofsemester presentations from different Capstone groups. She not only expressed how hard they worked on the presentations but also how exciting it was.

“I believe the best way to describe this moment is that there was a shared understanding and sentiment amongst everyone in the room that day; we were all working towards the same lifechanging goal.”

This May, she planned on traveling to Tanzania to serve and collect data for next year’s capstone group. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she will no longer be traveling. Later, if organized, she plans on traveling to the same community with an alumni group.

As a buckeye, Lindsay West has had various opportunities in and out of school. For anyone looking to expand their horizons, she suggests making thoughtful connections. Lindsay believes that being persistent in sparking conversations with other students, faculty and professors is the key to learning about new opportunities that Ohio State has to offer.

“I’ve learned that people love sharing their experiences if you are willing to strike up the conversation,” Lindsay said. “Someone else’s experience may inspire you to get involved or do something similar!”

Jaden Tatum Engineering a Path to a More Sustainable Future

With an objective of improving the sustainability of

agricultural systems on an international scale Jaden Tatum is on her way to finding a viable solution, one research initiative at a time.

A current graduate student in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Jaden attended the University of Arkansas upon graduating from high school.

As an undergraduate student, Jaden majored in agricultural and biological engineering with minors in sustainability and natural resource management; a degree path that has equipped her with the knowledge to approach issues, both practically and logically.

“I decided to specialize in agricultural systems, realizing that agriculture touches everyone’s life, and there will be a growing need for more food, bioproducts and sustainable systems as the population continues to grow,” she said.

“I am also interested in engineering for international development because there are huge gaps in yields, high levels of poverty and malnutrition, and a large proportion of the population works in agriculture in many developing countries.”

While completing her bachelor’s degree, Jaden got involved in research through connecting with one of the faculty members at the University of Arkansas.

Her willingness to pursue her own interests led her to participate in research projects like her honor’s thesis, which focused on using a modeling software to simulate a sustainable irrigation management technique in Arkansas rice fields. Jaden emphasized the important role networking and communication can play in finding and establishing such experiences.

“The biggest advice I have to other students is to explore the resources that you have open to you—read your email! I have found out about many of my grants, fellowship awards and undergraduate research programs through emails,” she said.

-Dr. Ajay Shah Now just starting her second year at Ohio State, Jaden has accomplished a great deal in a short span of time. Jaden works alongside Dr. Ajay Shah in the BioSystems Analysis Lab, where she collaborates on projects dealing with biobased systems logistics and technologies.

“My current research project is designing and testing a grain drying and storage system for use in developing countries,” Jaden explained. “We are hoping to create a system that is affordable and made with renewable resources.”

For this project, Jaden has won two student grants from Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and Sustainability Institute to support her research. The grant she received from OARDC is a part of their grant program, SEEDS: The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Research Competitive Grants Program.

“OARDC’s SEEDS grant program aims to give students experience in grant writing and review, so a grant committee is partially responsible for rewarding funds to students in CFAES,” Jaden said. “Next year, I will get to take part in the same process!”

In addition to her research funding, Jaden has also won four years of financial support through the university’s many funding initiatives; one of which is fellowships. At Ohio State, fellows are selected based on academic merit through university-wide competitions. Jaden was awarded a CFAES Environmental Graduate Fellowship, a University Fellowship, an Inclusive Excellence Fellowship, and as of recently a fellowship through a new program at Ohio State entitled EmPOWERment.

A part of the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Program, EmPOWERment was formed by 16 faculty members across seven colleges at Ohio State with the involvement of multiple centers and institutes, university offices and programs, and over a dozen external industry partners, led by ENGIE, Ohio State’s energy-management partner.

The EmPOWERment program leverages Ohio State’s 50year partnership with ENGIE to support energy research, operations and campus sustainability, by providing trainees with concrete opportunities to develop novel digital and physical components such as batteries, materials and algorithms; integrated assessment, optimization and predictive modeling capabilities for future scenarios; and new policies, educational mechanisms and business strategies.

“The focus of this program ties really well into my interests in international development and sustainable agriculture,” Jaden said. “I am excited to begin exploring what kind of affordable and sustainable energy sources are possible in rural contexts in developing countries.”

Jaden’s achievements in her first year of graduate school speak to her drive and passion for research, as explained

by Dr. Shah.

“Jaden is a very talented, hard-working and motivated student. Just in her first year as a graduate student, she has received multiple fellowships and awards, which testifies to this,” said Shah. “I feel very confident that she will achieve her goal. Jaden is a go-getter.”

Each year, students majoring in Agricultural Systems Management or Food, Agricultural and Biological

Engineering complete a year-long senior capstone design project. These projects, sponsored by industry partners, offer students an opportunity to apply all they have learned during their time at Ohio State to a real world problem. Using teamwork, collaboration, time management, and problem solving skills, students have designed ecosystem restoration for wetlands, solutions for food processors to reclaim wastewater and developed simulations to help farmers.

Retirees Jim Fowler Jim spent his early life living in a variety of cities including New Haven, CT, Harrisburg, PA, Chicago, IL, and Pittsburg, PA before graduating high school in 1980. He went on to attend Ohio University in Athens, OH where he graduated with a Bachelor of Scence in Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast Management. After his graduation he started working in news opperations for a PIttsburg based company that he had interned with in college. Jim then went on to work with a small family owned signage company before relocating to Columbus to work for Ohio State.

He started his time at Ohio State working as a broadcast producer creating weekly radio audio content in a unit in the College of Food, Agriculture, Enviornmental Science, Following state budget cuts in the early 1990’s Jim moved to finance where he worked until 2009. He went on to be the team lead for the first pilot effort within CFAES that served Communications and Technology, College Administration and Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership.

After the pilot’s completion he took his final position in finance with FABE. His favorite memories from his time with FABE include the annual holiday party and dessert competition, assisting graduate students, and the annual capstone competition.

He is spending retirement with his wife Becky and their kids Connor and Drew.

Peggy Christman Peggy grew up in the Wayne/Holmes County area where she attended West Holmes High School. She went on to attned the area’s vocational school. Her first position was working with Wayne County where she assited with HR and auditing. Afterwards she went on to Ohio State where she studied Horticulture.

Peggy’s first position at Ohio State was with Horticulture and Crop Sciences before moving to Food, Agriculture, and Biological Engineering in 2001. She worked in fiscal and human resources throughout her time with the department.

Her favorite memories of working in FABE were of the annual holiday party and dessert competition. She enjoyed seeing everyone who worked in the department across the various campuses and participating in the White Elephant gift swap.

Larry Heckendorn Larry spent his early childhood in Western Springs, IL before moving to Worthington, OH. He attended Thomas Worthington High School where he was required to take vocational classes along with more traditional subjects.

Larry chose to pursue welding, later driving him to pursue a degree in welding engineering from Ohio State. During his education, Larry was drafted and spent time in the military, serving in Vietnam amongst other places. He utilized his welding knowledge and wrote the US Military’s first specification on friction welding. He continued both his service and education after undergrad, going on to help invent the Cannon Launched Guided Projector, the dominant artillary piece in the Army today, the Neds container, gas tungstun arc welding, and more.

In his personal life Larry married in 1972, going on to have two sons and now two grandchildren. In retirement he plans to continue blacksmithing, include producing historicaly accurate pieces for the Orange Johnson House in Worthington.

While pursuing his Master of Welding Engineering at Ohio State, Larry began working as a graduate instructor, sparking a desiree to teach welding for the rest of his career at Ohio State. His favorite memory of his time at Ohio State was creating moon rock with Proffesor Clarance Jackson and WDNS weatherman Robert McMaster.

In Memoriam Don Schafer 1960-2020

Dr. Don Schafer passed away on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Don was a beloved lecturer in the Department of Food, Agicultural and Biological Engineering, where he taught several construction systems management courses during his time. He also served as a faculty advisor for many students.

Don was awarded the 2020 IPAG Outstanding Staff Teacher Award posthumously in recognition of his dedication and numerous contributions to the department.
