A Message from the CEO
Brethren, Ladies and Families,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you all had a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends. Our campuses provide amazing opportunities for those looking to retire and live in a community where they will continue to thrive. Our resolute staff works hard every day to meet the needs of our residents across all levels of care.
As always, many exciting changes are happening at The Ohio Masonic Communities, big and small. Western Reserve Masonic Community and Springfield Masonic Community continue to be ranked with CMS as 5-star communities in all aspects of care. This ranking reflects the work being performed and the dedication from our staff to our residents in providing continual quality care. Our music therapy and Conn ecting Realities Memory Support programs have continued to expand our services, and we are seeing the positive impact on our resident s.
In December, we held a groundbreaking ceremony at our Springfield Masonic Community to kick off the largest expansion and repositioning project in the organization’s history. This project will replace our existing healthcare centers and add additional assisted living to help m eet the demand for our services. Despite the cold and windy day, the ceremony was very well attended as we welcomed many state and local lead ers, the local community, residents, and staff to share our excitement of expansion. We are also in the planning stages for the addition of an outdoor activity space at our Western Reserve Masonic Community.
The future is bright at The Ohio Masonic Communities. As we strive to continue to be recognized as an organization of choice and a n employer of choice, we are committed to providing exceptional c are and producing exceptional outcomes. With many projects completed an d in process throughout the organization, we are dedicated to con tinuing to move forward in executing our strategic capital plan across all three campuses. I am blessed to collaborate with a team of dedi cated staff who continue to strive to provide a positive and compassionate environment for all of those we are given the opportunity to ca re for. I look forward to sharing the many successes ahead as our organiz ation continues to grow and evolve.

A Message from the Grand Master
Committed to the Craft – A Winter Reflection
Winter has always been a season of reflection for Freemasons. As the days grow shorter and the pace of life slows, we are reminded that some of the most important work of the Craft is done quietly. This includes strengthening character, renewing obligations, and preparing ourselves for the future. This inward labor is essential, not only to our Fraternity, but to the nation our forebears helped to build.
This year, my theme as Grand Master is “Committed to the Craft.” That commitment takes on special meaning as we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States. Our nation was founded by men who believed that liberty requires responsibility, that freedom is sustained by virtue, and that self-government depends upon the moral strength of its citizens. Many of those men were Freemasons, guided by principles that remain central to our Craft today Freemasonry helped shape a nation rooted in service, sacrifice, and devotion to something greater than oneself. Those same values call to us now. Being Committed to the Craft means being committed to our communities, our fellow citizens, and the enduring ideals that have defined America for two and a half centuries.
That spirit is evident in the mission of The Ohio Masonic Communities. Every day, especially during the winter months, the care provided to residents reflects the very best of Masonic and American values. Compassion, care, and service are not seasonal. They are commitments, faithfully honored regardless of circumstance.
Winter invites each of us to pause and reflect:
• How am I honoring the freedoms entrusted to me?
• How am I serving my Lodge, my Brothers, and my community?
• How am I helping ensure that the values we cherish endure for future generations?
As we look toward this historic national milestone, let us remember that strong nations are built the same way strong men and strong institutions are built, through steady effort, moral clarity, and unwavering dedication.
May this winter strengthen our resolve, deepen our gratitude, and renew our commitment to the principles that unite us as Freemasons and as Americans.
Together, let us move forward, Committed to the Craft and committed to the enduring promise of our nation.
Fraternally,
MWB Shawn Johnson

A Message from The Grand Secretary
Brethren and Friends all,
The Holiday season has all too quickly come and gone again. Our family gathered to celebrate and enjoy the wonder of the season together. I hope your holiday was also filled with happiness and joy. Each winter in Ohio, we cycle from above average temperatures to Old Man Winter moving in with single-digit temps. Hang in there, Ohio. Spring is right around the corner. Remember, it’s a good time to check in on your friends and neighbors.
The Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation has been reviewing options to create continuity for the foundation for improved awareness and fundraising efforts. The Junior Grand Warden currently serves as President each year and plays a critical role in managing requests for relief from the foundation. To retain the President’s role, a Chief Executive Officer position was added to provide year-after-year continuity. At the Annual meeting of the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation in October 2025, a revision to the by-laws was approved to add the office of Chief Executive Officer. The board elected the Grand Secretary to also serve in the new role.
Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation ties are still available on the Grand Lodge website www.Freemason.com. To celebrate the semi-quincentennial of America, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a limited-edition coin has been struck. One side remembers America’s 250 years of Independence with 13 stars. The other side is a tribute to Ohio being the 17th State of the Union and recognizes Freemasonry and The Grand Lodge of Ohio today. There will only be 1,776 coins available. Watch for their release coming soon.
This past December, I had the privilege of visiting the Annual Communication of The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. It was a wonderful experience with old friends while meeting new friends. Their Installation of the Grand Master and Grand Lodge Officers is a beautiful ceremony. Even more beautiful was our tour of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania building. If you haven’t already visited this magnificent building, I would recommend a scheduled visit in your future. Make sure to check building tour hours before your visit.
Lodges in Ohio are well on their way through the Inspection season. There is no better time to put your Masonic mileage on the car than now. Pick up a friend and make memories traveling to your District or even throughout the State. You’ll be surprised to see how much we learn by watching the Degrees, not to mention creating lifelong friendships. That is what Masonry is all about. See you on the road.
It’s an honor to serve the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The office staff is committed to serving you, so please call on us if we can be of any assistance.
It's a Great Day for Freemasonry!
Keith W. Newton, PGM Grand Secretary

Monroe County’s Christmas Magic Man
Right Worshipful Brother Gary Hoskinson has been Monroe County’s Christmas Magic Man for 50 years! He started his journey of spreading Christmas cheer a year after his mother passed away and has continued playing the role of Santa Claus for the Children in Monroe County.
He travels far and wide to spread cheer of the Christmas season from the Maco Workshop to the Arbors at Woodsfield. His sleigh has even made it as far as the State Capitol! When he arrives, he supplies a moment for every child and adult alike! He provides a stuffed animal for each child after they tell him what they’re hoping for this Christmas. He also provides a small gift to the teachers and workers at his stops. A Mickey Mouse, a blue and purple bird, or whatever might make someone’s day, as the joy of the season is celebrated by all.
How does he come up with all of the over 2,000 stuffed animals that he gives out each year, you may ask? Along with his own contributions, he has a whole workshop of elves that donate and collect them. His main contributors are the members of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Clarington, as well as help from the Switzerland of Ohio Ministry Action!
Christmas cheer does not end for Gary when the Christmas season is over, though. Gary trims his beard and puts his suit away but continues to treat people the way he does at Christmas: by lending a helping hand, however he can when people need it! Imagine how the world might look if we kept the spirit of the holiday season alive all year long, as Gary does.
Gary has been a Mason for over 35 years and is a Past Deputy and DEO of the 18th Masonic District. He and his wife, Nancy, are also members of the 18th District Masonic Volunteer Program Committee Gary will attend Lodge and work in his spare time doing a lot of mechanical work. Slowly, but surely, his beard will grow back out, and it will be time for him to put on the red suit once more to spread that holiday cheer to so many.
Thank You, Right Worshipful, for being dedicated to the craft for so many years, and more so, thank you for being dedicated to spreading cheer and happiness, something our world needs now more than ever. SMIB!
Committed to the Craft

A Message from the Executive Director
Dear Brethren and Friends,
We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our donors, whose support has made a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents this past year. One highlight is a $250,000 gift that expanded music therapy not only in memory care, but across all levels of care at our three communities. We are also proud to have provided nearly $800,000 to our resource center, serving Masons and their families throughout the state.
The new year is already off to a strong start and promises to be transformational as construction begins at Springfield Masonic Community. We’ll continue to share updates as the project progresses. Later this year, you’ll be hearing more about how you can help advance the future of The Ohio Masonic Communities, Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow.
Wishing you and your family a prosperous and blessed new year.

SPRIG Holiday Fundraising Brings Joy Across Our Communities
The 2025 holiday season was filled with warmth, generosity, and community spirit thanks to the incredible efforts of the SPRIG (Supporting People, Reinvesting in Good) auxiliary fundraising teams at both Springfield Masonic Community and Browning Masonic Community. Through months of planning and the dedication of committed volunteers, these events not only brought festive cheer but also generated vital support for life enrichment projects that directly enhance the daily lives of residents.
In Springfield, the SPRIG team hosted the Christmas Bazaar on the Hill, and at Browning Masonic Community, the annual Festival of Trees once again transformed the campus into a winter wonderland, showcasing beautifully decorated trees and wreaths while inviting the public to celebrate the season in support of a meaningful cause.
Both campuses also offered Breakfast with Santa, a joyful family-friendly event that brought generations together and created lasting holiday memories for residents, children, and guests alike.
These successful events reflect the heart of SPRIG, volunteers giving their time, creativity, and energy to support those who call our communities home. We are deeply grateful to the SPRIG teams for their hard work, generosity, and continued commitment to making the holidays, and every season, brighter for our residents.
Team Member Spotlight Meet Robin Schreck
This February marks one year since Robin Schreck joined The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation (OMCF) as Office Coordinator. Robin’s career has always been centered around helping others, from supporting children and young adults to now serving seniors. That spirit of service is reflected in her work every day. Since joining OMCF she has been a steady and welcoming presence, supporting the team while helping ensure a warm and inviting experience for our supporters.
Outside of work, Robin enjoys traveling and makes it a goal to visit at least one new destination each year. In 2025, she traveled to Gettysburg and Alaska, marking a personal milestone as she faced her fear of flying. Robin is newly married and they share their home with Dozer, a rescued Staffordshire Terrier who loves snuggles, food, long walks, and taking up most of the bed. Robin also has a deep appreciation for photography, particularly capturing nature, country landscapes, and quiet details like fall leaves, creeks, and old barns.
We are grateful for the care and dedication Robin brings to the team and look forward to all that lies ahead!
Thank You!
As we begin the new year, we want to share our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation and contributed to an amazing 2025. We are grateful for the trust you place in us, our vision, and for believing in our mission as we continue this meaningful work, today, tomorrow, together.

Friendships Rooted in Brotherhood
Masonic Volunteer Program’s Mike Hasman helping friend and Brother Robert Balas split firewood this winter. The two grew a great friendship in their now weekly woodcutting sessions. The resource center was honored to be a small part in helping to form a connection that built trust and strengthened the bond of brotherhood. Helping someone cut firewood, or sharing a meal, are simple acts of kindness that reflect something so much deeper—the strong bond of brotherhood that defines Freemasonry in action. If you know someone who could use a little extra help this winter, call us at (877) 881-1623. There could be a volunteer right down the road!
HOPE for the HOLIDAYS
The resource center was the recipient of two generous toy drives this holiday season. District 9 President Chris Gibbs offered to collect toys at the district holiday party, while Cathy Furrow, Secretary of the Oliver Chapter of Eastern Star, also organized a toy collection. In addition, WB Perks suggested that the donated toys be distributed to Holiday Outreach Giving Tree families.
Presents for the Giving Tree families were delivered by dedicated Masonic Volunteer Program (MVP) volunteers. Mark Bruns of Aerospace Lodge #800, Chris Gibbs of Madison Lodge #221, Joel Swords of H.S. Kissell Lodge #674, and Mike Stasiak (MVP Committee Chairman) of Lancaster Lodge #57 answered the call to help deliver presents to families across Central Ohio. We could not have served as many families this year without their support.
Through the Holiday Outreach Program, The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center helped 105 households, serving 200 individuals. This includes 15 families with children so they could experience a brighter holiday season. The resource center is deeply appreciative of everyone who donated and sponsored children from the Giving Tree, including Western Reverse Masonic Community and The Ohio Masonic Communities’ employees, as well as those who volunteered their time to help deliver presents.
A special thank you to the many volunteers who have assisted with toy drives, basket giveaways, cards, gifts, breakfast with Santa, and beyond, from Christmas outreach to helping throughout the year! We appreciate you!
To learn more about the Masonic Volunteer Program, call DeAnna Kinney at (740) 262-1974 or e-mail dkinney@omcoh.org.
Remembering Beloved Volunteer, John Lovejoy
The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center team would like to acknowledge the recent passing of John Lovejoy, proud chairman of the 23rd District Masonic Volunteer Program Committee, and member of Flushing Lodge #298. John worked diligently with Southeast Ohio Coordinator DeAnna Kinney for 18 years to support the outreach efforts of The Ohio Masonic Communities serving as the Volunteer Committee Chairman for the past nine years. John was a compassionate man who always gave of himself and tried to anticipate the needs of others. John will be missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his loving family and friends.
Staying Well this Winter
As temperatures drop, staying warm becomes more than a comfort—it’s a matter of health and safety. If you need help with heating or cold-weather resources, please call The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center. We’re here to help you stay warm and well throughout the season. We also offer wellness checks and an emergency assistance program that can help with aging, health, and safety needs.
Excitement is in the Air: Springfield
Masonic Community Breaks Ground
On a chilly December afternoon, community members, staff, and local, state, and national dignitaries gathered to celebrate a major milestone at Springfield Masonic Community (SMC): the groundbreaking for a new assisted living, healthcare center, and memory support neighborhood. The 64-million-dollar expansion will permanently change the landscape of Springfield Masonic Community.
Residents and leaders shared reflections on what the project means for the community. Tom Fisher, an SMC resident and member of The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation Board, spoke movingly about the impact of the expansion. “My wife and I never questioned our decision to move to SMC in 2020,” he shared. “This project makes so much sense for the residents of Springfield and the surrounding communities.”
While the project brings a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, excitement clearly leads the way. Planning has been underway for some time, with early improvements already completed, including Community Center updates, a new parking garage, and an additional elevator in the Scottish Rite apartments.
Scott Buchanan, CEO of The Ohio Masonic Communities, shared, “We are very excited to be starting the next phase of our Strategic Capital Plan with the groundbreaking for our new healthcare center that will host a state-of-the-art skilled nursing center, modern assisted living area, and the addition of an assisted living memory support neighborhood. This repositioning will make us more efficient and effective at delivering the care and outcomes we are known for.”
Annette Turner, SMC President, emphasized, “We’re a five-star community. That means we give five-star quality care, we have five stars in our health inspections, and we also have a five-star staffing rating, which is amazing in this day and age for healthcare centers. I’m very proud of this team for giving excellent care and doing an awesome job. To build on that, we will have a five-star community in the look that matches the care we already provide.”

28th Annual Grand Master’s Florida Reception
In January, Most Worshipful Grand Master Shawn A. Johnson visited Ohio Brethren living in Florida. Joined by Grand Line Officers and staff from The Ohio Masonic Communities (OMC), he hosted three luncheons where he shared updates from Ohio and presented year-of-service awards.
Brother Steve Petitjean, COO of The Ohio Masonic Communities, also shared updates on OMC including news about the construction in Springfield, the company's national recognition, and stories from each campus. As always, attendees were reminded that support for Ohio Masons is available through The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center (1-877-881-1623), even if they reside in Florida.
The Grand Lodge Officers and OMC staff thank all who attended and extend special thanks to the hosts: Most Worshipful Brother George Braatz (Sarasota/Bradenton), Most Worshipful Brother Steve Krekus (Bonita Springs), and Right Worshipful Brother Jerry Hatton (The Villages).
The Silver Songbirds Bring Holiday Cheer
The Silver Songbirds add something truly special to the Christmas season. Made up of memory support residents alongside other community members, the choir fills the room with the joyful sounds of familiar holiday carols and festive favorites, spreading warmth and connection with every performance.
The resident-led choir performs for fellow residents, staff, and the wider community, creating meaningful moments through the power of music. The choir is part of The Ohio Masonic Communities Memory Support Programming, Connecting Realities, which aims to enhance engagement, well-being, and connection through creative expression.
Music therapy offers proven benefits, especially for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In a comfortable, supportive environment, participants experience improved mood, increased movement, stronger communication, reduced agitation, and even moments of memory recall.
Liz Stamm, Director of Connecting Realities, shared, “The Silver Songbirds are not just a choir. It’s a place to express, to explore, and to be accepted regardless of cognitive capabilities. Together in song and community, all are welcome.”
Delivering 5-Star Care
Earning a 5-star rating in health care is a true mark of excellence. A 5-star health rating signifies excellent performance and high quality. This top rating reflects outstanding performance across a multitude of areas, including patient experience, quality of care, safety, and service. Awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a 5-star rating is the highest recognition available and signals “much above average” quality in everything from preventive care and chronic disease management to communication and overall satisfaction.
In Ohio alone, there are more than 900 healthcare centers, yet fewer than 25% achieve a 5-star rating. On a national level, Western Reserve Masonic Community (WRMC) ranks in the top 20%. Jason French, President of WRMC, shared, “I’m incredibly proud of our 5-star rating, and I credit our dedicated staff for making this happen.”
Five Star Rated
With health and safety needs expertly met, communities like WRMC can focus on what truly enriches residents’ lives—bringing people together through meaningful moments, celebrations, and activities.
Browning Masonic Community Celebrates Annual Festival of Trees
The holidays arrived early at Browning Masonic Community (BMC) with the much-anticipated annual Festival of Trees. The community was beautifully decorated, and everyone waited in anticipation for the Festival of Trees to begin.
The event featured an array of decorated trees and wreaths, along with Breakfast with Santa on Saturday morning. Proceeds from the Festival of Trees support resident needs through The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation, making the celebration both joyful and meaningful.
The Festival of Trees is sponsored by The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation’s Auxiliary Rose SPRIG I. Becky Vincent, a BMC resident and chairperson for the event, shared her excitement about its success, saying, “This was a very successful event, and we’re already planning for the 2026 Holiday Festival on Friday, November 6.”
Wes Biddle, resident of Browning Masonic Community, made this rocking unicorn in the campus woodshop. This beautiful unicorn was a gift for a staff member's granddaughter.
