As CEO, I see this commitment lived out every day by our dedicated team of professionals who serve residents not as patients, but as Brothers, Sisters, and family. Our campuses consistently deliver high quality care that honors each individual’s independence while providing the support, safety, and clinical expertise they deserve.

A Message from the Grand Master Committed to the Craft
The Power of Presence, Positivity, and Partnership
Freemasonry has never been confined to the walls of a Lodge – it lives in the quiet moments at home, in the conversations around the dinner table, and in the support systems that make each Mason’s journey possible. That is why it is so important to recognize not only the Brothers who gather in our Lodges, but also the women, families, and loved ones who stand beside them. Freemasonry does not exist in a vacuum. What we bring home from the Lodge shapes our households. And what we carry from our homes shapes the spirit we bring back into the Lodge.
This year’s theme, Committed to the Craft, is more than a slogan. It is a call to action. Commitment is not measured simply by attendance. It is measured by presence, by the spirit, attitude, and energy we bring when we show up. A Lodge can have a full room and still lack engagement. Conversely, a small group of committed Masons can create an environment filled with purpose, encouragement, and growth. Commitment, at its core, is about intention.
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, we are reminded of a powerful truth: perfect people do not build history, it is built by individuals striving, often imperfectly, to create something better. That same principle lies at the heart of Freemasonry, we are not perfect men. We are men committed to improvement. Men who recognize that growth is a process, and that progress requires effort, humility, and perseverance.
The Choice of Positivity
Positivity is often misunderstood. It does not mean ignoring challenges or pretending everything is fine. Instead, it is the conscious decision to believe that things can improve and to take responsibility for being part of that improvement. Every Mason makes a choice each time he enters the Lodge: Do we bring encouragement or discouragement?
Do we build others up, or quietly pull the tone down? That choice matters more than we often realize.
The Responsibility of Leadership
Nowhere is this more evident than in the role of the Worshipful Master. Leadership sets the climate. If leadership carries negativity, the Lodge will feel it. If leadership brings hope, purpose, and direction, the Lodge will reflect it. The tone of a Lodge is not accidental, it is created, and it begins with those entrusted to lead.

A Question for the Future
As we stand on the edge of a historic milestone, it is worth asking: What kind of Freemasons will history say we were? Will we be remembered as those who resisted change, or those who led through it? As those who focused on problems, or those who worked toward solutions? Each of us contributes to that answer. To be Committed to the Craft means more than fulfilling duties. It means being intentional about the tone we bring, the leadership we provide, and the example we set when we choose positivity, we influence our Lodges. When we lead with purpose, we strengthen our Fraternity. When we commit fully to the Craft and to each other, we help shape the future. Freemasonry has always been about building, not just structures or traditions, but men, communities, and legacies. And that work continues today with each of us. May we always choose to be builders of light.

We hope this finds you and yours enjoying a beautiful spring as the trees begin to bud and the grass is growing at a record rate. It’s a good time to check in on your friends and neighbors.
Over the past several years, I’ve dedicated my comments in the Spring Beacon issue to our Grand Lodge Charities. Let me begin by thanking each one of you for the wonderful response to the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation fund raiser celebrating the Semi quincentennial or 250th anniversary of American Independence this year. The response to the coin has been very positive. All proceeds benefit the Relief Fund to assist those in need. Quantities are limited so be sure to get yours today.

Living our tenets is good therapy for us all. With the greatest of these being Relief, it’s the perfect time of year to reflect on our Fraternal legacy as Masons responsible for assuring the future of our great fraternity. The brotherhood we share, the philanthropies we support, the alliances we build in our communities – all depend on our vision, leadership, and financial support.
The Grand Lodge of Ohio Charitable Foundation was established for Masons to help Masons and non-members at their time of need. Our deepest gratitude goes to those who had the vision to create this tool for Ohio Freemasonry. There are five separate funds for you to consider when designating your Charitable Foundation giving:
“Relief” - the Charitable Foundation Relief Fund was the initial vision our forefathers had when creating the fund to offer aid. Continue our tradition of providing relief to our Brethren, widows, and orphans. It’s a great place to consider when making your charitable donations each year.
“Scholarship” - thank you to our License Plate program supporters. Because of you, the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund receives more than $60,000.00 each year to apply directly to the Scholarship Program. 2026 Ohio high school graduates will receive more than $110,000.
“Veterans and First Responders” fund continues to grow since its’ inception thanks to the Grand Master and First Lady focus this year. A request was recently granted to the Orville Fire Department to help outfit a new rescue truck. Remember to thank your veterans and first responders for their dedication to serve and protect.
“Museum and Library” fund is used to maintain and preserve our history as well as provide resources to share with our membership and community alike. Take a virtual tour at Freemason. com or schedule a special lodge event by visiting in person.
“Masonic Model Student Assistance Program” funds support training around the state. We have supported three events for both students and teachers to date this year. Contact the Grand Lodge office for your school to host a MMSAP workshop.

What is a Chamber of Reflection?
"We must pass through darkness to reach the Light." — Albert Pike
The Chamber of Reflection is designed to enhance a candidate’s experience with the Ohio Ritual and to reinforce the understanding that becoming a Freemason is both an internal and external journey. This quiet and solemn space allows the Candidate time for reflection prior to initiation, helping prepare his mind and spirit for the transformative experience he is about to undertake. The purpose is simple: to place the Candidate in the proper frame of mind so that the day he is made a Mason becomes a lasting and meaningful memory.
As part of this year’s Grand Master Award program, Lodges are required to establish a Chamber of Reflection in order to enrich the candidate experience. When Madison Lodge No. 221, F. & A.M., in West Jefferson, Ohio, set out to create one, the Brethren had no idea just how remarkable the final result would be.
Right Worshipful Brother W. Pat Comer began the process by sharing the “Guidelines for Use of a Chamber of Reflection (v2),” and the Craft quickly set to work. Like many Lodges, Madison Lodge already had a traditional Candidate’s Anteroom. Its walls still carried the familiar wood paneling reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s—walls that had witnessed many men begin their Masonic journey. The Brethren began asking themselves how they could transform this familiar space into something that would mark the beginning of the future Candidate’s journey in a more memorable and meaningful way.
Several members of the Lodge contributed their time, effort, and creativity to the project, and the results were remarkable. Worshipful Brother Ron Mullins suggested the use of a fabric tapestry designed to resemble castle stonework, which soon became the focal point of the room’s transformation. He also generously donated a handcrafted wooden shelf that provided the desk space needed to complete the room’s layout.
The remaining walls were painted matte gray, with trim finished in matte black, creating a subdued and contemplative atmosphere well suited for quiet reflection. The materials recommended by Grand Lodge were carefully incorporated, allowing symbolic elements to be displayed for each of the three Degrees. These items help reinforce the lessons and symbolism the Candidate will soon encounter within the Lodge.
The Brethren also developed a separate display arrangement for visitors and prospective petitioners during Lodge tours. This thoughtful approach allows the Chamber of Reflection to be shared as part of the Lodge’s story while preserving the integrity and surprise of the setup used during actual degree work.
The care and dedication invested in this Chamber of Reflection truly reflect the spirit of the Grand Master’s initiative to enhance the Candidate’s experience. While Madison Lodge was fortunate to receive Lodge Transformation Funds to help offset the cost, the true return on this investment will be found safely deposited in the repository of the faithful breast of every future Candidate who begins his Masonic journey within this special space.
A special word of thanks is extended to the Brethren whose efforts helped make this project possible: Worshipful Brother Ron Mullins, Brother Ben Morgan, Brother Kyle Gilliam, Brother Steve Grimes, Brother Larry Moore (visiting from Texas), Brother Scott Jerome, and Worshipful Brother Chris Gibbs.

At the heart of our mission is a promise: to care for Masons and their families at every stage of life Whether through our resource center, offering guidance in difficult times, or providing daily support in our communities, your generosity ensures no one is ever alone. Stories like Annette’s (see page 10) show the difference you make, providing both immediate relief and lasting stability. Assistance You Can Trust
At The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center, our mission is simple: to walk alongside Masons, Eastern Star members, and their families when life becomes challenging. Sometimes that support comes in the form of guidance, connection to resources, or simply having someone who will help navigate a complicated process. For Eastern Star member Annette Bowman, that support made an important difference during a difficult time. For quite some time, Annette had been struggling with the rising cost of groceries. Like many individuals today, she found that everyday expenses were stretching her budget further than expected. During this time, the resource center was able to step in and provide food gift cards to help supplement her grocery needs and ease some of the financial pressure.
While the gift cards provided immediate relief, the resource center team also worked with Annette to identify longer-term solutions. A resource center coordinator sat down with her and helped complete an application for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Navigating assistance programs can often feel overwhelming, but Annette did not have to go through the process alone.
The coordinator walked beside her through each step, helping with the paperwork, answering questions, and providing support throughout the application process until she ultimately received approval for food assistance.
During the waiting period, the resource center continued to provide grocery gift cards to help ensure Annette had food on the table until her SNAP benefits began. Today, Annette has the ongoing support of food assistance, bringing her greater stability and peace of mind. We are honored to support members like Annette and remain committed to ensuring that no Mason or Eastern Star member has to navigate life’s challenges alone.
Intergenerational Day Camps
Join us for Intergenerational Day Camps on each of our three campuses! Our Intergenerational Day Camps offer a unique opportunity to connect across generations while enjoying a variety of engaging activities. Participants will take part in wellness activities, create crafts, cook together, and enjoy exciting animal presentations.
The goal of these camps is simple: to create lasting memories for both children and residents of The Ohio Masonic Communities through shared experiences and meaningful connections. These events are open to children and grandchildren of campus staff and residents, as well as all youth in the community

Bringing Support Home
The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center was contacted by the Worshipful Master of Heber Lodge #501 that they had a brother in need. Robert Schooley’s wife, Janet, was in rehab and when she came home, they needed a wheelchair ramp. Together through the resource center’s Emergency Assistance Program, the Lodge and Grand Lodge Charitable Fund were able to pay for the wheelchair ramp. Janet is now able to get in and out of their home safely. Both Janet and Robert are grateful for the help that they received from their Masonic family. The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center has helped many others throughout the state, using Emergency Assistance Program funds, providing rent assistance, utility assistance, food cards, gas cards, lift chairs, stair lifts, and more. If you are struggling and need short-term emergency assistance, or offsite assistance that can help pay for in-home private duty care, please contact your local community outreach coordinator.
Masonic Volunteer Program
In recognition of April being National Volunteer Month, we wish to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to our MVP committee volunteers around the state! Thank you for your dedication to our clients and your support of The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center. I’d also like to acknowledge the loss of Dave Edgell, a longtime volunteer in District 17. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Proven Excellence with Our 2026 Activated Insights Awards
We are proud to announce that all three campuses of The Ohio Masonic Communities— Browning Masonic Community, Springfield Masonic Community, and Western Reserve Masonic Community—have been recognized with the 2026 Customer Experienc e Award from Activated Insights, a national leader in customer satisfaction for senior living and healthcare organizations. This award places each community among the top 15% of senior living providers nationwide, based on feedback gathered directly from residents and their families over the past year. The surveys take a close look at the full experience—from the move- in process and day-to-day life to how concerns are addressed, and whether they would recommend the community to others.
Activated Insights conducts interviews with residents and families to assess satisfaction and identify organizations that demonstrate excellence in the services and care they provide. The Customer Experience Award is reserved for providers who achieve best-in-class performance, highlighting organizations that consistently exceed expectations.

For The Ohio Masonic Communities, this recognition reflects a consistent commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centered care and meaningful experiences to those we serve.
SMC Expansion Project is Moving Forward
Springfield Masonic Community residents are watching with anticipation as the expansion project continues to move forward. Several smaller projects—such as the renovation of the Community Center, the construction of a parking garage, and the addition of another elevator in the Scottish Rite building—are now complete.
The first major step toward the new buildings required demolition. Structures including a multi-story vacant building and several villas were removed, totaling approximately 75,000 square feet.
Before construction could begin, utilities had to be relocated, including gas, electric, and water lines. Marker Construction, the general contractor, ensured the process ran smoothly.
As construction of the new buildings gets underway, work will begin on the basement and foundation, along with the addition of stairwell towers.
Residents often ask, “When will it be finished?” and “How many apartments will it include?”
The expansion will feature a new assisted living neighborhood, a healthcare center, and a memory support neighborhood. The assisted living neighborhood will include 104 apartments, with 24 designated for the Pathways Memory Support Neighborhood. The healthcare center will offer 72 private suites, evenly divided between long-term care and short-term rehabilitation.
The estimated completion date is September 2027 and residents are eagerly counting the days!
Medicaid Waiver Approved for BMC Memory Care
We are excited to announce that Medicaid Waiver is now accepted for memory care at Browning Masonic Community. Browning Masonic Community was approved for Medicaid Waiver in assisted living nearly two years ago and has recently been approved for Medicaid Waiver in memory care. Medicaid Waiver at Browning Masonic Community can help make assisted living or memory support more affordable for you or your loved one.
The Medicaid Waiver Program, offered through the Ohio Department of Medicaid, helps offset the cost of senior living at approved communities—though it differs from traditional Medicaid. For those who meet the eligibility requirements, the program can help reduce monthly rent expenses. Once enrolled, Medicaid Waiver helps cover essential services such as 24-hour on-site response, personal and nursing care, meals, housekeeping, and social activities—providing both support and peace of mind for residents.

Polly is one lucky puppy! She has been named the winner of the 2nd Annual OMC Pet Bowl. Residents from across all three communities submitted adorable photos of their beloved pets, helping determine who would take home the coveted title.
A total of 16 furry contestants competed for the championship, each bringing plenty of personality and cuteness to the competition! In the end, Polly came out on top.

WRMC Helps to Feed Medina County
Feeding Medina County is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity by providing meals to residents in need across Medina County, Ohio. Founded in 2007, the organization serves the community through programs like Weekenders for Children and Staples for Seniors, supporting the 11.4% of residents facing food insecurity. Each week, more than 1,000 “weekender” bags are packed by volunteers, helping bridge the gap for families experiencing hunger through strong partnerships and direct distribution.
Team members from Western Reserve Masonic Community actively support Feeding Medina County by volunteering their time to assemble “Weekender” food bags for local students in need. In a recent effort, the team prepared 950 bags to help support local families. Western Reserve Masonic Community is proud to give back and make a difference—one bag at a time.
Kimberly Valco, Community Relations Manager for Western Reserve Masonic Community shared, “This is the ninth year that we have participated in Feeding Medina County. Many of us have lived in Medina most of our lives and were unaware of the challenges some individuals face in accessing quality food. Our team believes it’s important to support both the children who represent the future of our community and the older adults who call Medina County home. This is a very rewarding program, and we look forward to participating on a yearly basis.”
2025 Medina County Business Awards
Western Reserve Masonic Community was honored with the 2025 Capital Investment Award by the Medina County Economic Development Corporation. This award recognizes organizations that have made significant investments to strengthen the local economy and enhance the community.
The Medina County Economic Development Corporation celebrates businesses that have made substantial capital investments, resulting in sustainable revenue and employment growth, as well as an enhanced quality of life in the community. Western Reserve Masonic Community was recognized for its multi-year expansion and renovation project in Medina Township.
As part of this transformation, Western Reserve Masonic Community completed a comprehensive modernization of its senior living community. Enhancements included a new state-of-the-art healthcare center, 56 independent living residences, a 20,000-square-foot commons area, a community center, a fitness center, and numerous additional upgrades throughout the campus.
The investment introduced innovative programming and modernized spaces designed to enhance resident care and well-being.
