An “All-In” Approach to Navigating our Next Century It’s been said that change is the only constant in life, and our industry has certainly seen its fair share. As I look back on another year and reflect on the transformations that have taken place, I am incredibly proud of our team who have advocated for even higher levels of excellence. From introducing innovative programs that improve access to quality and increase efficiency, to strengthening our retention and recruitment strategies, I believe we are setting the standard for what aging services should be. Over the next ten years in the United States, there is a projected increase of 11.7M in those age 75 or older,* a population that will come to represent 26% of Ohio by 2030.** In order to meet these growing needs, we must proactively position our organization. So, in light of escalating wage pressures, talent shortages and operating margin pressures, we continue to add new independent living residences, embrace technology, and introduce specialized care and services. Throughout this report, you’ll learn about our how we are employing technological advancements, adapting to changing demographics in our emerging markets, investing in staff training and development, and elevating operational and clinical care across all service lines. You’ll also read about our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as our commitment to memory care and cognitive health. Lastly, I am honored that Ohio Living again received a Great Place to Work designation. To me, this demonstrates that what we do is more than just a job – it’s our mission. As I look to the future, I know the winds of change are inevitable. Yet forging forward together, in partnership with you, we will successfully navigate our next century.

Throughout 2022 we were busy constructing Heritage Pointe, a new 57 unit independent living addition to Ohio Living Westminster Thurber, which opened and filled in May, 2023. As we continue to prepare for the growth in the greater Columbus market this is only the beginning of what lies ahead. During the year, our board of directors approved our strategic vision to expand our growth strategies in the greater Columbus and Cleveland markets. Get ready!

As we continue to grow, we are strengthened by the diversification of our Perennial Advantage Plan of Ohio, our Ohio Living owned Medicare Advantage Special Needs plan. This plan continues to grow in membership across Ohio with over 700 members, including residents of Ohio Living. As a complement to the Medicare Advantage growth, due to the ongoing COVID-19 induced labor pressures, we reduced skilled nursing services on the majority of our campus communities. As we continue to realize precedent setting growth in our Home Health, Hospice and Palliative Medicine operations we continue to expand our market share throughout Ohio. In addition, we introduced a joint venture with Curana Health by expanding Ohio Living’s value-based primary care offerings throughout the state. U.S. News & World Report ratings are based on an indepth analysis of consumer-satisfaction data derived from resident and family surveys. Each community is rated on several criteria, including resident and family members’ satisfaction with safety, care, community management and staff, value, and other services and amenities provided by the community. In this fiscal year:

Two Ohio Living Leaders Named McKnight’s Pinnacle Award Winners Two senior leaders at Ohio Living, CEO Laurence Gumina, and Chief Human Resources Officer Dana Ullom-Vucelich, were inducted into the first-ever McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards class. The awards honor industry veterans who have set standards, driven change, and provided guidance and inspiration to peers and the senior care, skilled nursing or home care sector at large. “With the Pinnacle Awards, McKnight’s is honoring the individuals who have not only reached the top of the profession but managed to remain there for years,” said Publisher Craig Roth. “They’ve inspired us in the past and they’ll continue to do so for as long as they remain in the field.”

Ohio Living Vineyard on Catawba - Shirley Green
Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber Opens Heritage Pointe Beginning May 1, 2023, the inaugural residents of Heritage Pointe, the newest apartment building at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber, started moving into their brand new homes. Heritage Pointe originated as a response to the thriving Victorian Village neighborhood in downtown Columbus; the growing population of seniors in the area; and the resounding success of Goodale Landing, Heritage Pointe’s sister building that opened in 2016. The new expansion was announced in spring 2020, on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual presentations and socially distanced tours throughout the coming months resulted in two-thirds of all apartments being reserved by the end of the year. Ground was officially broken in February 2021. Leading the Way in Care, Service, and Innovation Ongoing staff training in patient-centered care, DEI best practices and cultural competency is a priority across our diversified service lines. Thanks to dedicated funds from Ohio Living Foundation donors, SAGECare training kicked off in 2023 with our executive team. This training addresses the concerns and unique history of LGBTQ+ older adults, as well as meaningful action steps that can be taken to improve the quality of supports and services we provide. For us, this is leading with love, and we are working toward cascading this training to leaders across our organization to become fully certified. On the patient care side, clinical teams from throughout the state participated in skills labs at Scan here to learn more various Ohio Living sites this year too. We continue to invest in staff to ensure our teams are well-equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide top-tier care and services to about diversity and inclusion at Ohio Living. all those we serve.
Celebrating what sets us apart: faith, compassion, and community For more than 100 years, Ohio Living has prioritized a ministry of care in every sphere of our organization. From our mission to provide adults with caring and quality services toward the enhancement of physical, mental and spiritual well-being consistent with the Christian Gospel, to our core values of Care, Customer Service, Financial Stewardship, Innovation, Integrity, Leadership and Inclusion, we believe faith, compassion, and community are guiding principles that set us apart. To this end, we have an extraordinary team of chaplains, spiritual care coordinators, and bereavement coordinators across the organization who help our teams, families, patients, and their loved ones navigate the mountains and valleys of pain, grief, and loss, as well as provide encouragement and promote spiritual growth. Their commitment to listen, minister and demonstrate love transcends denominations and faith traditions. Introducing Concierge at Home Summer 2023 ushered in a new Ohio Living service known as Concierge at Home. Concierge at Home provides personalized collections to ease the burden of home services such as house cleaning, laundry, maintenance, yard work and beyond, and is open to anyone desiring this assistance. Concierge at Home is a value offering to life plan community residents who would like to prepare their home for holiday visitors, short-term residents returning home after a rehab stay, and home health patients who would benefit from someone caring for Scan here to learn more their lawn, among others. about this service! Vetted service providers are dispatched to assist with a wide range of needs, at any desired frequency, assuring cost-effective and highquality options.
Having previously served as executive director and administrator at Ohio Living Rockynol for since 2013, Kara Hanzie was appointed as executive director of Ohio Living Breckenridge Village in December 2022. David De Simone joined Ohio Living in April 2023 as chief counsel and compliance officer. De Simone brings 25 years of legal experience, most recently serving as the senior vice president for CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, N.J. Adding to his executive director responsibilities for Ohio Living Village Home Health & Hospice, Ben Hasselbeck assumed oversight of Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice in Greater Columbus in June 2023.
Ohio Living Representation at the Columbus Pride Parade Over two dozen staff and residents from Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber and Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice – Greater Columbus participated in the Columbus-area Stonewall Pride March on June 17, 2023. With matching shirts, signs, flags, and a fully decorated bus, they demonstrated our ongoing commitment to LGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion to the community — not only recognizing each person’s uniqueness, but celebrating it!

Equipping our Team to Transform Memory Care As more robust research emerges about brain health and the best approaches to caring for persons living with dementia, Ohio Living is being intentional by providing relevant training and resources for its employees, with funds raised through its charitable arm, the Ohio Living Foundation. A three-phased transformation process is under way, beginning with the Hearthstone Institute’s coveted Memory Care Center of Excellence Certification process across Ohio Living’s communities. In fiscal year 2023, six Ohio Living communities (Ohio Living Mount Pleasant, Llanfair, Swan Creek, Breckenridge Village, Dorothy Love and Westminster-Thurber) became Hearthstone Certified Memory Care Centers of Excellence. Broader Community Resources
The first phase of certification implements the I’m Still Here™ approach, which prioritizes hope and the founding belief that every person living with dementia is truly still there and can experience a high quality of life, regardless of the severity of their memory loss. Through Dementia Specialist training and the implementation of the Center of Excellence principles and practices, employees across the state are making a difference as residents continue to experience increased engagement and a greater sense of meaning and purpose. As part of Dementia Specialist training, siloed views of positions and job responsibilities are replaced by a collaborative approach to providing care. Without a collaborative approach, nurses would primarily focus on a resident’s medical needs; activities assistants would focus on providing entertainment; and housekeepers would focus on the physical environment. With the enhanced teamworkdriven approach, many employees have reported higher levels of job satisfaction. 16 | Impact Report 2023
Along with higher job satisfaction, employees have also noted a new sense of empowerment to confidently execute what they’re learning in the field; which leads to improved engagement and decreased agitation for residents. Following the introduction of “Demonstration – A Dementia Specialist’s Super-Power” training, a direct caregiver shared an upbeat experience she had with residents while assisting with their personal care. She used a toothbrush to demonstrate the appropriate steps for teeth brushing, one at a time, using actions and fewer words. Suddenly, residents who hadn’t participated in brushing their teeth before were now doing some or all of the step — regaining independence! She pointed back to a guiding principle from the training – “Cueing is better than doing” – to chronicle her excitement. The second phase of the transformation process, “Campus-Wide Engagement,” focuses on expanding the continuum of dementia care to independent and assisted living environments. The aim is to promote aging in place and assist with creating a dementia-friendly environments through education, understanding and shared experiences. Independent living at Ohio Living Mount Pleasant was selected as the pilot site for phase two of Ohio Living’s memory care transformation. A second pilot beginning in January 2024, and funded by a generous Foundation donor, will train team members who work with residents in assisted living. The third and final phase, made possible through future gifts to the Ohio Living Foundation, will extend Hearthstone training to all Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice team members and those they serve in 51 counties across the state. Ohio Living also intends to Serve as a Resource for people in the general community with memory issues and their families so they can better navigate the challenges of living with these conditions.
