Dear Ohio University Graduates,

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on this momentous day. Your graduation from Ohio University is a tremendous accomplishment that deserves to be celebrated by you, your family and friends, and the entire Bobcat Community.

During your time at Ohio University, you have gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise, formed lasting friendships, and developed the con dence to pursue your dreams. Your education has taught you the importance of hard work, resilience, and embracing new challenges. As you embark on the next chapter of your life, carry these lessons with you and never forget the experiences that have shaped you into the amazing person you are today.

As Ohio University graduates, you are now part of a global network of over 280,000 alumni in 150 countries who are dedicated to using their education to create a signi cant impact on the world. DR. KEVIN D. CORDI

Dr. Kevin D. Cordi holds a doctorate in Storytelling and Education (Drama, Literature, Reading, Language, and Culture) from The Ohio State University. He teaches literacy, children and middle literature, storytelling, and education classes at Ohio University Lancaster where he serves as the Middle Childhood Coordinator. He served on the National Advisory Board for Learning for Justice with the Southern Poverty Law Center and is the current Chair for Storytelling for the National Council Teachers of English. He has authored books on narrative and learning, most recently “YOU DON’T KNOW JACK: A STORYTELLER GOES TO SCHOOL” (2019, University of Mississippi Press).

He believes that deep listening to his students is as important as the curriculum he teaches. He believes there is a powerful story at Ohio University Lancaster and every day his students show him it is true.

MATT BATES

Matt Bates is graduating with Bachelor of Science in Communication with a related area in Business. During his time at Ohio University Lancaster, Matt was a member of the Tennis Team, and he served as President of Lambda Pi Eta communication honorary and as Vice President of Marketing and communication for Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.

Matt’s passion for giving back to the Lancaster community inspired him to complete an internship with the Lancaster Festival in 2022, and he earned the honor of Lancaster Distinguished COMS Junior that same year.

In his free time, Matt enjoys exploring area coffee shops, volunteering for his community, and shopping with his friends. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in event planning.

ACADEMIC Heraldry

The caps and gowns worn today in this Graduate Recognition are patterned after the attire of monks and students in the Middle Ages. Those who have earned a bachelor’s degree wear gowns with a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, intricate shirring across the shoulders and back, and long-pointed sleeves.

At Ohio University Lancaster, holders of associate and bachelor’s degrees wear colored tassels on their caps to indicate their fields of study in accordance with the legend below.
