Ty and Heather Etgen made the Buckeye state proud as they were honored as the Holstein Association USA’s Distinguished Young Breeder Award winners at the National Holstein Convention in June. Congratulations to the Etgens! They weren’t the only ones to enjoy the convention, Sarah Thomas took a group of Ohio junior members to Lexington and from all reports, they had a blast! Unconventional. I heard that word over and over at the National Holstein Convention in Lexington, Kentucky in June. What was everyone talking about? They were talking about this year’s Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder who just happens to be from the Buckeye State. Ty Etgen of Etgen-Way Holsteins from Harrod, Ohio was the winner of this prestigious award. As many of you may know, Ty is very interested in the dairy industry and the registered Holstein business. He and his wife, Heather, met at the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo. He was showing Holsteins and she was showing Ayrshires. Today, they milk a herd of registered Holsteins on Heather’s family farm. Ty has worked hard to improve his herd of cows. He has been able to breed and develop the type of herd that he wanted. His herd has excelled in type, production, and longevity. He has been honored here in Ohio with

the Buckeye Breed Builder award. He has received the Premier Exhibitor banner at several shows. He has bred class winners at the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo and the Ohio State Fair. He has had one of the top ten BAAs for his herd size in the United States. He has obviously accomplished many things, but he is a positive person who is always looking ahead to help others be better. He is an asset to the Ohio Holstein Association where he serves on the Board of Directors and is always willing to step up when asked.

Ty and Heather, along with their sons, Cash and Henry, exemplify what the Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder award is all about. And the pathway they took to establish their herd is unconventional. Ty didn’t grow up on a dairy farm, but he worked hard to get to where Etgen-Way is today. Congratulations Ty and Heather! This is a well-deserved honor.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It is hard to believe that we are done with summer and into cooler weather. It has been a busy summer for everyone, but we feel fortunate to have spent some time away. The Kentucky Holstein Association hosted a wonderful convention this summer. My family had the opportunity to travel to Lexington to take part in the convention. My girls also had the opportunity to interact with other Holstein youth from around the country. This has left a lasting impression to them as they are already making plans to attend next years convention in Salt Lake City, UT. I want to again thank Sarah Thomas for being the chaperone for the Ohio youth. I know Sarah also had a big part in coordinating the youth convention. The summer show season has wrapped up and we are headed into the Fall show season. Good luck to all the exhibitors traveling to National shows this fall. I think Ohio has a very good group to represent the quality of our cattle in this state. I am excited to see how they do. Thank you to Evan Kiko and family for hosting the summer tour. Although I was not able to attend, I heard it went very well.

We have two exceptional dispersals slated for this fall. The Dave Klingensmith family will have a dispersal in October. In November, Ja-Bob Holsteins will be dispersing. Both of these families have bred exceptional cattle over the years. In today’s world, dispersals like these are rare. I hope that these sales are supported well. Good luck to these exceptional breeders with their sales and with the next chapter of their lives.

Trading the Dairy Life for

A Higher Calling “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” Isaiah 6:8 Holy Bible, New International Version Mark Yeazel of Ja-Bob Holsteins has always prided himself in being different. Whether it’s focusing on certain traits in the dairy industry or devoting himself to ministry, he does so quietly and with the utmost humility. And he’s about to embark on an incredibly devotional journey. Before Red and White Holsteins could even be registered with the then-HolsteinFriesian Association, Yeazel took a liking to the breed. In 1970, his parents, Jane and Bob (origin of the Ja-Bob prefix), moved to the current location of the family farm in Eaton, Ohio. Yeazel’s first calf — named Flower — was a Red and White simply because she was easy to pick out among the group of calves. Before graduating from Eastern Kentucky University, he knew he wanted to come home and work on the farm. Still, his interest in Red and Whites remained evident. In the fall of 1982, Sky-Hi Mars Helen-ET EX-92 4E arrived at Ja-Bob Holsteins. What was a fall calf born in September 1980 turned into a monumental element of the Red and White legacy. “She really changed the breed,” Yeazel said. “It’s 8

estimated that she is in about 90 percent of all Red and Whites.” KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET can be traced back through five generations to Helen. “Each generation of Helen is more and more interesting,” he noted. “She has had a global influence for over 40 years. I’m thankful to have been a part of that.” There are approximately 350 maternal Excellent lines from Helen and well over 1,000 Very Goods. Over the years, Yeazel has never been one to shy away from something innovative. “At first, it was Red and Whites. Then it was polled cattle, then A2A2, then the slick gene. Some of my cows have more than one of those traits, too. We should strive to be different. This industry can be too homogenous.” His breeding philosophy is to start with aAa and combine that with genomics. His goal is to simply breed better cattle, and he won’t hesitate to use bulls from all over the world. In June 2013, Ja-Bob Holsteins installed two Lely Astronaut A4 robotic milkers

after having a conversation with their local dealer about labor and what was next for them. “Don’t shy away from technology and what’s next in this industry,” advised Yeazel. He once had a goal of breeding a Red and White cow that would score Excellent and produce 1,000 pounds of fat. He has surpassed that goal by breeding a 10th generation Excellent descendent from Helen that produced more than 2,000 pounds of fat on her last record. Ja-Bob Holsteins has attracted international interest over the past 25 years. Yeazel credits Jean-Louis Schrago of ABC Genetics for much of that success: “He believed in me and my breeding program.” In 2004, Schrago invited him to Switzerland, which would bloom into a key friendship and relationship between the two enthusiasts. “We were treated so well. They took us on tours and we saw some beautiful herds of cows,” said Yeazel. “We enjoyed it so much, we took a second trip in 2007.” Switzerland was not Yeazel’s first international outing. In the early 2000s, he went with a group to Haiti to a sports

opportunity in Tanzania. “I want these people to be self-sufficient and foodsecure,” he said. “These areas are subject to drought, international and civil wars and other externalities.” In February 2024, he will begin his groundwork. “I realize I’m Westernminded. I’ll need to learn quite a few things to make this successful in East Africa. We will have to think about the best type of facility to have, what breeds to have and what to feed those cows. There won’t be any corn silage, so we will have to implement other crops like sunflower oil, rice hulls and cottonseed. We will create something to fit the environment.”

He then went to an orphanage in Romania called Caminul Felix, which means “happy home.” He referenced Matthew 25:40 (NIV) — “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” — to note, “Who else could have the ‘least of these’ than a child who has nothing?” It was in Romania where he met Mircea Toca, who led the orphanage. This friendship kindled because of their desire to do “immeasurably more,” a reference to Ephesians 3:20 (NIV): “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

Life-Changing Encounters Just a few years ago, Yeazel made another friend via Facebook. Steven Muwandi, originally from Kenya, was in Dayton completing a fellowship for graduate school. Both of their Facebook profiles cited interest in the dairy industry, so Yeazel messaged Muwandi and the rest was history. Yeazel had him visit the farm, and the relationship continued by taking

Muwandi on different field trips, such as seeing how milk is processed and learning more about agronomy. The student eventually invited Yeazel to Kenya to speak on the industry at a seminar. While in East Africa, Yeazel also travelled with Toca to Tanzania for a short trip.

He serves on the Board of Directors for Eternal Families Tanzania. The goal for the community is to eventually have 260 children and more houses, in addition to a school big enough for 560 children altogether in the greater area. Through Yeazel’s work with “Junk for Jesus,” $50,000 has been raised in addition to $10,000 from his Ohio church, Eaton Community Church. This will go toward a building that will be named “the house of joy,” which is a reference from 1 Thessalonians 5:16 (NIV): “Rejoice always.”

November 10 will mark the dispersal of Ja-Bob Holsteins. Yeazel hopes he has bred and developed a diverse set of genetics in which buyers will be sufficienty interested. Some of those genetics include homozygous polled, the slick gene, A2A2, Linebacks and more. He has also sent approximately 100 bulls to stud with the Ja-Bob prefix, such as Jordan-Red and Rex-PP-Red. There are currently 62 Excellent-scored cows that have carried the Ja-Bob prefix, with Ja-Bob Bayonet Hava P EX-94 being the highest. As dairy farmers, we want to provide milk to people. People means all people. I want to be a part of teaching people how to produce their own food,” he added.

Upon arriving home, Yeazel encountered God; he felt a calling. Early that April, he had thought he wanted to keep dairy farming for another five years. However, seven days later, he decided he wanted to build a dairy for Eternal Families Tanzania. “When you are called upon by God, how do you respond? Will you walk in faith or run?” he inquired. He remembers telling his wife, Joy, “I think we are supposed to build a house in Tanzania.”

Here at Velvet-View Farms there is always something or ten things happening at once. We are a multi-generational farm of registered Holsteins with a 113.3 BAA. Our milk is processed here on the farm into yogurt and recently ice cream. Having our whole crew be involved in the family farm is a blessing. I’m Brandi Schlauch and I work with my husband Aaron and our two sons. Logan is full time on the farm and is married to Taylor and they have two children Kassidy and Charity. Wyatt is our youngest and is a senior in high school. Our farm is located in the rolling hills of Big Prairie, Ohio. Monday, August 28th Mondays are MawMaw Days. My little FarmHers came out for their routine of riding bikes around the painted road in the basement, having a picnic drinking cocoa with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into shapes, playing with baby dolls and our typical craziness while Logan delivers orders north. Was excited to learn Wyatt earned a Kroger Leadership Award at the Ohio State Fair. Worked on the latest building project at the barn. Kassidy and I sorted, then hung up show ribbons as an accent wall in our “lounge”. Tuesday, August 29th At 4:50AM Logan texted to say our red Warrior 2 year old (goes back to Tony Beauty) calved in with an adorable red heifer calf. ‘Believe’ has been a little strong willed in the heifer barn - can’t wait to milk her. Spent the day working on the building project - finished up the ceiling and installed the lights. The girls put several miles on their gator in front of the building in the gravel. Wednesday, August 30th Oh boy, or rather girl… another heifer calf this morning. This one could potentially be the 20th generation back to Royal Rosa. No more than situated her, then our recip farm called to say a granddaughter to Goldwyn Bonnie was born 2 weeks early. So off we went to pick her up. No bottle babies since June and now 3 in 24 hours…in August (boo). Installed window boxes on the building project. Kassidy thought we should take selfies around the farm. Thursday, August 31st Please let this month end before any other heifers are born. More building and gator driving. My dad came over to work on his father’s 1948 John Deere B. Got it running and is happily planning to take it back to his garage. Dairy Committee wrap up meeting. The Holmes County Fair was a success- minus the tornado on the last night. The dairy kids, though small in number are a great group of kids, and we had a lot of fun throughout the week and a successful auction. Went over the good things and improvement points for next year. Friday, September 1st Hooray its September! An uneventful day on the farm, Logan went off to deliver south. Kassidy got new tap shoes to be ready for dance class next week. Cleaned the freezer and loaded it with ice cream in the “lounge.” Wyatt left with the Ohio 4-H Dairy Judging team to head to the Maryland State Fair for Judging Bootcamp. Saturday, September 2nd Found a couple of cuties in the local paper, Wyatt, Kassidy and “Alison” (the calf) were pictured in an article about Wyatt winning Dairy Entrepreneurship at the Ohio FFA Convention. Kassidy and I got the calves on buckets, made yogurt, more building and gator riding. Needed to run and get a small amount of supplies to finish up building. While on the way home, Logan called to say the power was out. We barely settled in when there was a knock at the door. The neighbors thought it was too dark and too hot in their house… the generator at MawMaw’s was just what they needed and maybe some ice cream. We barely finished when the power company went up towards our barn and the power came back on. Sunday, September 3rd Uneventful milking with the fresh 2-year-olds. Aaron and I taught Sunday School. After church we finished up covering two doors and building a third for the project. A praying mantis was on Aaron’s back while he was cutting and freaked Kassidy out. More gator hours in the gravel (if you have not heard a Power Wheels plastic tires turn on your gravel, you cannot imagine how it starts to make it hard to concentrate, lol). The girls learned how to unscrew the cover and switch out their own battery. While Logan and Taylor boxed this week’s or-

ders- the girls both practiced in tap shoes. They are a noisy duo. Monday, September 4th Cleaned up our building site. Wyatt rolled back in from his judging adventures. Loaded up a flatbed trailer of “goat hay” to deliver to our friend’s goat herd. Took the whole family down to unload the hay as it was going up in the mow and he doesnt have an elevator. So we loaded it onto a skid on the skidloader, lifted it to the door, unloaded and stacked while trying to avoid being licked to death by the HUGE New Foundland dog and their 3-legged dog. Finally done and heading home when the Amish neighbor flagged us down in the middle of the road. The family cow calved in, had milk fever, stumbled down the hill and got wedged between two trees. They had already cut one of the trees down and she was looking rough. Tuesday, September 5th Quick trip to the hardware to get rollers and brackets for our barn door. Stopped to look at the neighbor cow and decided we would call the vet for them. Hit the processing room to make and package yogurt. Aaron and the boys met the vet at the neighbors- he agreed that she looked pretty rough and treated her. Finally decided we should at least know this cow’s name- “Lady.” Wednesday September 6th The bagger ,was delivered and set up shortly after milking. Chopping crew rolled in around noon. While I was painting a bench for the lounge, the neighborhood busy-body rolled in on his 4-wheeler looking for the boys. The Amish neighbor had asked him to get our boys to help set up Lady. Unfortunately, Logan was on the tractor with the bagger and Wyatt was at class at the ATI, so Aaron and I headed over. Lady was still in the ravine, we set her up and tucked her all together. Ended up chopping until dark, Will finish the third bag in the morning. Thursday, September 7th Choppers were back bright and early. They pulled out with enough acres left to check around the neighborhood to see if the larger dairies need any extra feed for the year. A little more building, more gator driving, and making ice cream. My Dad came and took off to drive the old B the six miles back to his home. Friday, September 8th Did some cattle rearranging today. We were able to take some weaned calves down to the heifer barn, clean calf pens and move a couple of calves to the larger pre-weaning pens. After scraping out the barn we were able to tag calves. Aaron and the boys went over to check on the Amish cow, this time they tried to lift her. It was obvious she was not responding to the lifting so they carefully tucked her into the bucket and carried her up to the barn where the family could watch over her closer to the house. Saturday, September 9th Today is the 50th Judging Contest at the Wayne County Fair- Wyatt took his FFA Dairy Judging team to the contest, they came in first place! He is fitting some animals there, so will be buzzing back and forth between farm work and fitting today. Sunday, September 10th Taught the preschool at church about God’s promises- and aren’t we all blessed to know He keeps those promises. Spent time reorganizing the front of the building project (my people tend to think putting tools back in the shed means dropping them inside the door or piling on the workbench, but can never locate what they need the next time) A quiet day, need to get some rest…it’s a MawMaw Day tomorrow. other thing I had a blast doing was encouraging youth to get more involved in activities the Holstein breed has to offer such as barnyard olympics, State Holstein Convention, and National Holstein Convention. I also got to help with the National Holstein Futurity. The Futurity is always something I’ve enjoyed growing up watching my grandma ride in on the wagon, and this year I got to be in the wagon with her! The Futurity is a completely different experience as it is a big event. I absolutely loved representing the Holstein breed at the State Fair! Congratulations to everyone who exhibited and good luck at World Dairy Expo and the North American!

‘I Can’t Wait ‘Til Next Year!’

Sarah Thomas took a group of Ohio Juniors to the National Junior Holstein Convention in Lexington, Kentucky in June and they came away with the following first impressions:

Carissa Pittman: I had a great time at National Holstein Convention this year. To be honest, I was a little nervous to go at first because I didn’t know anyone. I never would have thought I would have as much fun as I did. As this was my first ever Holstein convention, I didn’t know what to expect, but from the time I got there until the time I left, I had so much fun! This year, I competed in the digital scrapbook contest, and I enjoyed being able to recap everything about the Ohio Holstein Juniors. This trip made me want to get more involved with not only the Ohio Holstein Association but at the national level too. As I hope to go to Utah next year, I am excited to compete and participate in many more contests, and possibly run for the Junior Advisory Committee. Overall, the National Holstein Convention was a blast, and I made so many memories and met so many new people that I can call my friends. I encourage all youth to go if they get the opportunity; it won’t disappoint!

Hannah Griffith: This year was my first National Holstein Convention. At convention, I competed in the Public Speaking contest, and my speech was titled “The Dairy Life” where I talked about my life living on a dairy farm and showing cows. There were 22 contestants, and I was the youngest one competing. I learned a lot from this experience and hope to do it again next year! The dances and family night were so cool! I had so much fun at convention and hope I can go to Utah in 2024. Thank you to Ohio Holstein for the opportunity to go!

Caleb Griffith: I had never been to National Holstein Convention before, but I am so glad I had the opportunity to go. I competed in Dairy Jeopardy and had a great time making friends from all over the country. We had dances, a workshop with Bonnie Ayars, a family night, and went on a tour to a farm for retired race horses! I had so much fun and can’t wait to go again! A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ to Sarah for taking on this task along with helping with the entire National Junior Convention this year!

Aubree Topp: This year, I was fortunate to attend the National Holstein Convention in Lexington Kentucky. This was my first National Holstein Convention, and I participated in Digital Scrapbook, Public Speaking, and the Folding Display contests. These opportunities were such a great learning experience. While in Lexington, we visited a couple of horse farms around the Bluegrass State. We had junior activities and dances every night, I got to bond with other Ohio Holstein Junior members, and meet other people from other states. On the last day we had the Junior Forum and it was there that I ran for the Junior Advisory Committee (JAC). I was elected to be on the committee and am now representing Area 2, which SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023

O N T H E N AT I O N A L F R O N T Congratulations to my birth state, Kentucky, on a very successful National Convention. They put together a fun and event filled convention with a minimum of volunteers. THANK YOU to Sarah Thomas for chaperoning the Ohio juniors and overseeing the whole Junior Convention, well done! I was encouraged by the good group of Ohio juniors in attendance. Our Ohio Holstein Queen Aubree Topp was elected to the National Junior Advisory Committee. She will be a great addition and represent Area 2 well. On the adult side there was a very talented group running for the National Board with Betsy Bullard, Andy Lenkaitis and Scott Yocum filling the Board seats vacated by Steve Keene, Pete Duep-

pengiesser, and Ben Newberry. Genetic advancement chairman Spencer Hackett was reelected to his second 3-year term. Special Congratulations go out to Ty and Heather Etgen, awarded Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder. Ty and his family are an inspiration to many young Holstein breeders starting out. It was also very satisfying to see John Marshman, who served on the Board with me for six years and guided the Finance committee throughout his time on the Board, recognized with the Distinguished Leadership Award. Mark your calendar for June 24-27 in Salt Lake City for the 2024 National Holstein Convention. At the end of October, we will hold our National Show Committee meetings to approve the National Shows, Judges list and plan for the 2024 Judges conference. Supreme Winners Chosen at Harrison County Fair Dairy Show By Barb Lumley The Harrison County Fair Open Dairy Show was held Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Cadiz, Ohio. The show was dedicated in memory of Samuel W. Cunningham, a former Harrison County Dairy Board member. Judge for the show was Jason Miley, Miley Holsteins, West Salem, Ohio.

Champion was the Holstein Four Year Old shown by Hardingdale Holsteins, Jarod Harding & Family, New Philadelphia, Ohio. She was also Senior and Grand Champion of the Holstein show. The Supreme Junior Champion All Breeds Award was won by the Red & White Winter Yearling shown by Hardingdale Holsteins, New Philadelphia, Ohio. She was Junior Champion of the Red & White Show. First-Generation Farmer is

2023 DISTINGUISHED YOUNG HOLSTEIN BREEDER

The 2023 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder followed an unconventional path to his career as a dairy farmer. Growing up in town, Ty Etgen always jumped at the chance to spend time on his friends’ farms. Today, he’s living out his dream as a successful Registered Holstein® breeder and dairy farmer. Holstein Association USA is thrilled to recognize Ty Etgen as this year’s Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder. Ty is the sole owner and manager of Etgen-Way, a herd of 100 Registered Holstein cows near Harrod, Ohio. He’s sharing life on the farm with his wife, Heather, and sons Cash and Henry.

Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI). He notes his participation on the dairy judging team and an internship at Air-Osa Dairy in California as key learning experiences during his college years. After graduating from college, Ty farmed in a partnership for a couple of years before starting a small herd of his own. In spring 2015, Ty and his family broke ground on a new 110 cow barn and double-seven herringbone parlor. Today, he takes on all the primary responsibilities on the dairy, and continuously works to improve his Registered Holstein herd.

“The whole list of Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders is impressive, and to be on that list, it means a lot to me,” Ty shares. “Fifteen years ago, I had nothing, and to be recognized with this award, it’s awesome.”

The herd at Etgen-Way is milked twice a day and has a rolling herd average of 23,044 pounds of milk, with a 4.0% fat test and a 3.1% protein test. Breeding high-scoring cows is also important to Ty, and in 2022 the herd had a BAA of 111.4.

As a youth, Ty found his way to the dairy industry through jobs on dairy farms and involvement in 4-H and FFA. After high school, he dove into working full time on a dairy farm for a year and a half. Ty then furthered his education with a degree in dairy cattle production and management from Ohio State

Ty and Heather, who met while showing dairy cattle, also enjoy competing in the show ring. Whether doing day to day chores or getting ready for a show, Ty says he’s thankful for the work ethic he’s teaching his two young sons. He’s also quick to give credit to the many mentors and friends he’s had in the dairy industry who

have helped him pursue his dreams.

“One thing that got me where I am today is, I’ve always been surrounded by great people that challenged me and pushed me on,” Ty says. Ty and Heather were presented with the award at the National Holstein Convention in Lexington, KY in June.

towards breeding for the shows. With that in mind, these are the sires we are using or have used recently: SIRES CURRENTLY USING: Unix, Sidekick, Master, Legend - for black and whites

Bullseye JOSH KNOOP I’m not sure where the quote came from, but I’m certain I remember hearing or reading it somewhere - “It’s easier going to the barn when it’s full of beautiful cows!” The herd certainly has changed in the last 4 years, we now just milk a handful for children’s 4H projects. Because of this we use almost exclusively sexed semen, except in a few cases where we keep some conventional semen to use for a cow that needs to get pregnant. We always bred for quality type, with shots of production thrown in, but the focus has gone totally

Warrior-Red, Acetylene-Red (once released) - for red and whites. The sample size may be much smaller now, but we really love the Doc heifers we have freshened recently. For us, they have been ideal, all have scored VG85 or higher. The type has been consistent - all have great frames with plenty of capacity, nice legs, really sound udders - and the production is a plus. We also have a nice Chief that is fresh again. Both of these bulls would have been given a lot more use if we had more cows to breed. The combination of type and production gives them a good balance. We used Master from pretty early and have a milking Summer 2-year-old that we are really pleased with. She was a fancy heifer and calved in well, and we continue to use him. Unix and Sidekick are two bulls we started using more of, especially with the success they had at fall shows last

year. Amongst the heifers, the Sidekicks have more angularity and eye appeal, but it seems the legs can get a little too much set to them. We would have liked to use Warrior earlier, but the calving ease of him drove us away from using on heifers. We try to use him on cows only where we can. The Acetylene newly released sire looks great on paper, and coming from a herd like Luck-E, where we used some of their other bulls with good success, makes him another one we are looking forward to getting our hands on.

The 2023 National Holstein Futurity lived up to his history of grandeur as the Taft Coliseum gates swung open for the dignitary parade preceding the entrance of elite Registered Holsteins for the 66th annual held on July 28th at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. David Crack of Canada served as the official judge for the futurity and the entire Mid-East Summer National Holstein Show. Crack selected Express-SMD HalleTW for his futurity winner. CALENDAR The entry forms for the National Holstein Futurity are in this issue. Enter all your eligible calves and see if you might be the winner in Taft Coliseum in 2026. Many positive comments were made about this year’s deep futurity class. Let’s keep that tradition going! The OHA convention will be in western Ohio this year and details will be coming in the next issue and on Facebook. Keep an eye out so you can enjoy a weekend with your fellow Holstein enthusiasts. The Ohio Holstein website is up and running and full of useful information on forms, dates, scholarships that are available and upcoming sale catalogs. Erica Davis does a great job of keeping the website current. Ken Janes (D7) recently attended his 200th board meeting in his years of service to the Ohio Holstein Association. Congrats Ken and thanks for your valuable input in the association activities! Congratulations to Alaina Lahmers (D14) for making the Cross Country Team at the University of Kentucky as a walk-on freshman! Ohio Holstein Association will have two members who will be judging the cattle on the colored shavings. Philip Topp (D-12) will be the lead judge of the International Red & White Show and Chris Lahmers (D12) will be judging the International Brown Swiss Show. Congrats to these two men for being chosen to judge on the big stage… again.

Thank You!!

By Barb Lumley The Spring Dairy Expo was held in April and marked the beginning of a busy show season for not only people here in Ohio, but also all over the country. Dairy shows include district shows organized by registered dairy breeders, shows at state fairs, and shows at county fairs. These shows include competition for both adults and youth. There are seven registered breeds of cattle: Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn and Red & White involved in most shows. The majority of shows include showmanship classes for the youth as well as the classes for both youth and adults based on the age of the dairy animal. The shows usually include some type of awards for the winners. They may include ribbons, trophies, banners, various types of gifts, or money. Each year it is necessary for the people in charge of the shows to come up with the money to pay for the expenses involved with the show. Those can include many things such as the rent for a fairgrounds or place to hold the show, postage to mail out letters announcing the show, printing of programs for the show, the judge’s fee, cleaning up after the show, etc. Hopefully, donations will include enough to provide some type of award for the winners and especially for the youth who participate. All types of business people and places are contacted. Many of those deal with farmers every day. The dairy farmers and registered breeders also donate and support the shows. There are many people involved in and responsible for organizing a show and making it successful. These people do the work not only in advance of the show, but also on show day. They are the ones who take the time from their own busy days to make the contacts with the people involved in the show and to contact people and businesses for donations and support of the show. They send out letters, receive the entries, type the programs and get them printed, organize the awards and so much more! These are the people who give of themselves to make the shows successful and to make them happen so that dairy people with a passion for showing cattle in the show ring have a place and a time to parade them! If you or someone in your family has been a winner at a dairy show have you said “thank you” to the donor of your award or sent a “thank you note” in the mail? If you have visited a store or the business of someone that you know donates to the dairy shows, have you thought to say “thank you for their support”? As an exhibitor, has it occurred to you to say “thank you” to your fellow dairy people who work with the show every year and help to organize it and make it a success? And 28

what about the retired farmers, dairymen, dairywomen and members of their family who no longer milk cows or parade the show ring, but who still help with the shows and have for years? Do you remember to tell them how much their help is appreciated? Every one of those people are needed to make a dairy show a success! And what about our youth who are involved in the dairy shows? Are you teaching them the importance of saying thank you and do you encourage them to write their thank you notes or say thank you in person? They don’t have to write a lot. Those two words, thank you, and their signature is what’s important to donors. There are so many generous people who, when you ask for something that involves our youth, immediately open their pocket books, their wallets, and their hearts. There are other times when “thank you” should be said. What about the successful show person, who takes the time to talk to our youth about what to look for when selecting a show calf, how to properly feed and prepare a calf for the show ring, gives them a tip about clipping, or who just encourages them to keep working and learning and they will win that blue ribbon. Words from a successful person can be so important in a youth’s life! So are the comments made to youth by the judges, as they work their way down a line of calves in a showmanship class or to select the first place winner. Words to a young show person should be said in a way to encourage not discourage. Judges don’t always realize how those words and the way they are said can affect a youth’s life. I do! When I was young and wanted to become a member of a 4-H livestock club here in Carroll County, girls were not wanted! So a rule was made that a girl who wanted to join a 4-H club and show a dairy calf had to show a registered calf---boys could show grade calves. My Dad purchased two registered Holstein calves for me and I joined a local 4-H club, whose advisor was not a farmer and knew absolutely nothing about showing dairy calves at the county fair! I fell in love with my two calves and learned that they needed to be broke to lead, brushed a lot, washed and kept very clean, especially on the day of the show. I was excited and nervous and since my calves were both the same age and in the same class, I had to get a friend to show one of them. We entered the ring and went round and round. In those days the 4-H dairy projects were placed in groups. The judge selected the first group and they were given A’s and blue ribbons. He then selected the second group and they were given B’s and red ribbons. And then he placed me about four feet or so beyond the second group and I and my two calves received C’s and two white ribbons! The judge then went to the microphone and talked about each of the first two groups. He then talked about me! His tone of voice was very nasty as he thoroughly berated me for not clipping any hair from my calves’ head, neck or tail and for not following the rules for the project. My mother was furious! She vowed that I would never join 4-H again or show another calf at the county fair! At an early age I had a tendency to be strong willed and determined. My reply was, “Oh, yes I will! I will be back and they will know I have been there!” That judge and his cruel words could have changed my life! I am so glad that I didn’t let them! However, in all my years of showing, my mother never again watched me show my Holsteins at any show! I never learned the name of the judge, often wished in later years that I had known who he was. My word to the judges--- never base your comments on just what you observe in the show ring. Sometimes you need to know the “rest of the story”! As we attend and enjoy the beautiful dairy cattle parading the show ring at the All-American Dairy Show, World Dairy Expo, and the North American International Livestock Exposition, we need to remember to say “thank you” to the people who contribute in any way to make it possible to hold all of our dairy shows everywhere. Thank you is easy to say and not hard to spell! Remember it!
