A Message from the President By Chris Lahmers

As we enter into fall, it becomes a busy time of year. I know several farms are working to get their corn silage done. This can be a stressful time with long hours, I hope everyone stays safe this time of year. I was able to attend the Pleasant Meadows dispersal a couple weeks ago. It turned out to be a perfect day, it was nice to catch up with Ohio Holstein breeders throughout the state. These kinds of dispersals don’t happen as frequently as they used to. It was nice to see the years of hard work pay off. Congratulations to the Fledderjohan family for their many years of breeding registered Holsteins. We wrapped up another successful show season at the Ohio State Fair. The fair was back to normal with attendance from the public. Congratulations to all of the winners in both the open and junior show divisions. The highlight of the fair for my children is getting to hang out with their cousins. For us older children, it is fun to talk about how things used to be. (Yes, I am getting that old). Good luck to all the exhibitors moving on to the fall shows. The Ohio Holstein Association has some exciting things coming up this fall. The OHA Fall Sale will be October 15th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Ken Janes with help from Wyatt Schlauch has put together a great offering of cattle with right

around 70 head to sell. Also, don’t miss out on the Ohio Fall Tour at Ty and Heather Etgen’s farm in western, Ohio. Paul Haskins has been working hard to put the tour together and you can see more details in this issue. Lastly, the Ohio Holstein Board of directors voted to do a Membership price increase in 2023. We have voted to move senior membership from $45 to $60. The last membership increase was 2009. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact any board member or myself.

Sustainability Through Diversity

“As the boys finished college and came home to the farm, it was important to us that they were able to make their life and living on the farm as well.” By Amanda Poelman As in any industry, the dairy business has seen many changes: increase in farm size, decrease in the number of dairies across the country, the rise and fall of milk and commodity and cattle prices. Through it all, the resiliency of producers and the importance of the family farm remain certain. Ack-Lee Registered Holsteins began in the early 1960s at its present location in East Liberty, Ohio, when Robert Ackley left his family farm to go out on his own. He started with a modest 40-50 cows which he milked in a double-4 parlour. He and his wife, Kathleen, raised a family, including son Jay, who returned to the farm full-time following his high school graduation. Today, Jay and his wife, Kristy, own and operate Ack-Lee Holsteins. They are in partnership with their two sons - Kyle, who is married to Morganne and with two children, Kinnley (2 years) and Maddux (4 months); and Kristopher and his partner, Brilee Tucker. They milk 160 cows, mainly Holstein with about 20 Jerseys, and raise 250 head in total. In 2000 a new double-8 rapid exit herring bone parlour was built, followed by a new free-stall barn to accommodate the growing herd, equipped with 90 free-stalls, six boxstalls and some loose-pack housing. The herd consists of 24 EX, 65 VG and 30 GP cows that produce an average of 24,150 pounds of milk, 8

1000 pounds fat and 680 pounds protein. While everyone has their own areas of expertise, Kristy said, “Everyone goes to the barn in the morning to milk the box-stall cows.” After that she and Kris handle the cow side of the business with the help of one other full-time employee, as well as Brady Ackley, who pitches in during the summer and when he’s not in school. Brilee takes care of the social media for the farm with a lively Facebook page. (NOTE FROM ANN: Who is Brady? What is his relationship in the family?) Jay and Kyle take care of the cropping and equipment side of the operation. They grow corn, soybeans, wheat and hay on 4,800 acres with the help of Nick Melvin and Gary Corwin, who are employed full-time. BREEDING PHILOSOPHY “Jay’s dad always said, ‘You can feed for milk, but you have to breed for fat,’” explained Kristy, “and we still follow that rule.” Fortunate to have a good foundation of strong cows thanks to Robert, the Ackleys have always bred for type, seeking out bulls with good feet and legs and good udder attachments (NOTE FROM ANN: Bulls have udder attachments? or is there a comma missing?), while being mindful of fat. Currently, sires such as Master, Legend, Energy, King Doc, Tatoo, Altitude and Delta Lambda are getting a great deal of use in the herd. Kris

does most of the breeding and spends a lot of time studying the bulls. “We don’t use a lot of genomic sires,” said Kristy. “It might be old-school, but I like to know what I’m getting. You don’t always get a lot of chances to make a mistake.” Mating decisions are made using bulls from good cow families with no holes in the pedigree that have good udder traits and good feet and legs. “We look at the cow we’re breeding, what improvements she needs, and we go from there.” That philosophy appears to be working with show ring favorite Ack-Lee Dempsey Passion EX-94, which is now owned by Peter Vail. Passion was Grand Champion in Harrisburg at the Eastern Fall National as well as Grand at the Ohio State Fair in 2018, earning her an All-American nomination that year. She was also Intermediate and Reserve Grand in Harrisburg and fifth-place Senior 3-YearOld at World Dairy Expo in 2017. Recently confirmed pregnant to Diamondback and due next spring, Passion goes back to Hesters Mark Prudence EX-95 4E, which also produce the Dundee Paige family at Triple-T. “Unfortunately, Passion has thrown a lot of bulls,” Kristy laughed. “We did keep one of her sons as a herd bull and we have plans to do some IVF on her this fall, after Madison.”

Her dam, Lookout Olympian Allstar EX93, is no stranger to the show ring, nominated All-American in 2020 as a 5-Year-Old. The next dam is EX-91, a maternal sister to Apple. All Out is owned in partnership with Plain Field Farms LLC. Scenic View Artist Ansley VG-89-3YR is out of Scenic View Slone Xami EX-90 4E and is due in March to Blondin Energy. This year she was third-place Senior 3-Year-Old at the Ontario Spring Discovery and at the Ohio State Fair. Constantly looking to improve their genetics and stay relevant, Jay and Kristy believe in the importance of using milk recording and classification as a way to benchmark how the herd is doing. They also place value in showing cows regularly to keep the Ack-Lee name at the forefront. “You don’t get visitors out to the farm as much as before,” explained Kristy. “Farms are a little fewer and farther between. Showing and social media is a good way for us to keep our name out there.” SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH DIVERSITY Jay and Kristy enjoy having their grandchildren, Kinnley (right) and Maddux(left) around the farm and at the shows.

SHOW RING SUCCESS The Ackleys have had a lot of success in the show ring over the past several years and hope to continue that trend. Budjon-JK Atwood Ekira EX-94 was both Reserve Intermediate and Futurity Champion at the Ohio State Fair in 2015. “We had a lot of fun showing her,” said Kristy, who admitted Ekira was a bit of a tough breeder but has left three VG daughters in the herd by Doorman and Alexander. Golden-Oaks Locket 2304 EX-92, with eight generations of VG and EX dams back to Roxy, is owned with Cam Hegar and Melissa Paulik. Locket was recently second-place 4-Year-Old at the Ohio State Fair, and Jay and Kristy are excited to get her out on the colored shavings this fall. Owned with Tyler Meyer and Matt Oeschle, Campbros D-Back Sheryl EX-92 was All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 2021, after winning that class in Madison as well as capturing Intermediate and HM Grand

Champion honors at the Ohio State Fair. Now owned by Jim Butler, Sheryl picked up where she left off by becoming Intermediate Champion at the 2022 Midwest Spring National. Fresh again in August, K-Hurst Armani Dazed EX-92 is another cow Jay and Kristy are excited about. Dazed was nominated All-American 5-Year-Old last year after winning that age class at the Ohio State Fair and placing fourth in Madison. Her daughter, K-Hurst Jordy Denali VG-87-2YR, owned with Keuhnert Dairy, was the fourthplace R&W Junior 2-Year-Old (second-place Junior) in Madison and was nominated All-American R&W in both the open and Junior divisions, becoming Reserve R&W Junior All-American. Denali sold to Pierre Boulet this spring and was fresh again in August. The Ackleys are not afraid to sell their best cows and also enjoy purchasing new bloodlines to add to their genetic program. Two buys from the “Hodglynn’s Finest Sale” in June are already proving successful additions. Glaustar California All Out EX-90 was

Both Jay and Kyle sell seed for Beck’s Hybrids. “Jay had already been doing this for quite a few years and when Kyle finished college, he decided to do the same.” Together they move about 4,500 bags of corn and 25,000 units of soybeans, as well as wheat and hay each year. Four years ago, when they started shipping their milk to Pearl Valley Cheese - noted for Swiss cheese in eastern Ohio - Jay and Kristy added Jerseys to the herd to help increase their components. However, the cows they added do more than just contribute components, since they’ve also had some fun in the show ring with them. Ohio State Fair. At the same show, Blackview Engineer Frisky VG-86-1YR, also owned with Amber, was first-place Summer Junior 2-Year-Old. Both cows will likely be making the trip to Madison. Another great venture fortunately included the purchase of Kristy’s parents’ farm in West Liberty, Ohio. “My family owned a grade operation and decided to get out of dairying. It came at a really opportune time for us,” she noted. The Ackleys were able to purchase the farm and began custom raising 600 heifers for Natural Choice Dairy, a large operation in the area. They also became a contract hog grower for Heimerl. “Heimerl provides the pigs and the feed and takes care of the hauling logistics,” she said, “(and) we provide the care, labor and barn.” Her dad, Doug Boots, along with nephew Noah, work full-time at the farm, which also provides peace of mind.

Glaustar California All Out EX-90 was recently named Grand Champion in both the Red & White and Black & White shows at the Ohio State Fair and will be heading to Madison. She is owned with Plainfield Farm, LLC.

Two other businesses include Ackley’s Pure Maple Syrup, a “hobby” that privately sells 450 gallons each year and can be found in some local restaurants; and a custom slaughterhouse owned in partnership with Phil Topp and longtime partner in cattle Pat Conroy. The shop, located in LaGrange, Indiana, is managed by Sarah Hart and has a small storefront selling bulk ground beef and pork burgers. The family will be breaking ground on their newest venture in a couple weeks: A new satellite facility for Boviteq. “We are super excited about the new facility,” said Kristy. “It will be open for both beef and dairy producers.” Jay added, “We’ll definitely be doing more boarding of animals, donor cows and open heifers when the new barn is complete.”

The facility, which will be constructed on the site of some older buildings and silos that were no longer used, will be a 200-foot-long drive-through barn and have 70 free-stalls, a loose housing pack for dry cows and a stateof-the-art OPU and IVF lab. Passion for genetics and breeding has earned the Ackleys several All-American nominations so far and they hope to continue with more animals that carry the Ack-Lee prefix. “One of our biggest accomplishments so far has been learning what it takes to get a cow to the center of the ring, and we look forward to more of that,” said Kristy. However, it has also been incredibly rewarding for her and Jay to work alongside their sons daily. While they might be “cow people” first, the diversification of their business into various revenue streams make the operation sustainable for generations.

The 2022 National Holstein Futurity was held at the Ohio State Fair on July 29th with Mike Duckett of Wisconsin serving as the judge. Dignitaries were paraded through Taft Coliseum in grand fashion before 13 entries entered to be judged by Duckett. Winning the futurity was Quietcove Foxys Arrival being led by Jeremy Elsass and exhibited by Quietcove Holsteins of Wapakoneta, Ohio and White-Light Holsteins, the Menzie family of McClure, Ohio. She also won the best bred and owned award. The Best udder award was earned by Ms Kayebrook Exp SMD Jolene, exhibited by Kayebrook and Stan-Mar-Dale Express Holsteins of Urbana, Ohio.

Hello everyone, I hope you all enjoyed your time at the 2022 Ohio State Fair, district and county shows. I would like to thank all who put on the wonderful shows, the judges and also the showman who made the shows possible. I am so honored to represent an association that involves so many amazing Registered Holsteins and I was very impressed with the deep competition. It was definitely a summer that I will not forget! Over the past few months, I was able to

attend multiple shows as well as many fairs. I first started out my summer with a few very successful district shows then made a week long trip to Columbus for our Ohio State Fair. While in Columbus, I was able to attend all of the Holstein shows. I was astounded at the amount of participation that was taking place and I will continue to share more and more about how to participate in years to come. On Friday evening of the fair, futurity took place. The futurity show was one that I will never forget. Each and every cow came into the ring looking flawless. It was a great experience and I was so grateful for the opportunity to see some amazing animals and how hard each and all families worked to get there. At a few different fairs, I walked around and spread the word about the value of Holsteins as a part of the dairy industry. I gave out handouts, cow pencil toppers, magnets, and coloring pages to those who are not a part of our industry. I thought to myself, we already love and support our industry, so I need to educate those who are not a part

of it, in hopes for us to get more support from others. As I walked around and spoke to people, I felt that children were very intrigued about the title, Ohio Holstein Queen. One night at the State Fair, a little girl came up to me. She would not talk too much but I could tell in her little eyes that she wanted to be the Ohio Holstein Queen. I gave her my crown and sash to wear for a few minutes and she lit up. Be on the lookout for Miss Hallie Simpson in about 15 years as your Ohio Holstein Queen, she will do a phenomenal job. Flowers of the Breed

I recently ran across the following words from an old song written by Pete Seeger---“Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing”. As I read that line, it brought a different thought to mind---“Where have all the famous Holstein cows gone”? When I got my first registered Holsteins, a visit from the field man, George Nichols, convinced my parents to join the Ohio Holstein Association. One of the benefits of belonging was the Ohio Holstein News magazine. I looked forward to every issue so I could learn about the breeders and their herds. Then we learned about a magazine called the Holstein-Friesian World. We subscribed and I anxiously awaited every issue. When most girls my age were reading magazines about make-up and fashion, I was reading the World from cover to cover, studying every picture, reading the breeders’ ads and learning about pedigrees. Every issue contained information about the outstanding herds and cows who were contributing to the breed, cows who were the dams of the sires being selected by the bull studs for artificial insemination in dairy herds all over the country. The sire directories contained pictures and pedigrees of the dams of the bulls that they were selling semen from. Those were the cows whose bloodlines would contribute to the improvement of the Holstein breed and become part of the registered Holstein history. As the Holstein breed progressed and time went by, when you were talking about or learning about registered Holsteins and a certain cow’s name was mentioned, immediately a picture, a pedigree or a fact about her would come to mind and she was remembered. Charity, Rose Milly, Snowboots, Fawn, Patsy, Mandy, Sears, Cinnamon, Hope, Rudy Missy, Winnie, Handmaid-Red, Blackrose, Ruby Red Rose, Alicia, Adeen, Lucky Barb, Dellia, Apple-Red, Roxy the “Queen of the Breed” and more. They came from all over the country! Many of them were Ohio bred cows. Those names represent just a few of the great cows whose bloodlines, through both sons and daughters, have contributed to the improvement and history of our Holstein breed. Every registered Holstein herd has a cow who is their favorite and holds a special place in the breeder’s heart because of what she has contributed to his or her herd. In the “old days” before embryos and sexed semen you hoped she would have a heifer calf every time, except when you wanted that bull calf that you would raise to breed a group of heifers. If you were lucky and knew your cows well, that cow would have the “correct parts” to pass along to her sons and daughters and the strength and will to live a long and healthy life. Where are the cows today that will be remembered? Who are they? We no longer seem to hear about them! There are cows that are well known in their own areas, but we no longer seem to have the cows who, when you mention their name, are being recognized by Holstein breeders everywhere. The bull studs are no longer as interested in sons from the winning cows at World Dairy Expo and other top shows or cows ranking high in classification. Many sires are coming from young heifers who have not met the test of calving, production, classification, the show ring or time. Therefore we see or know very little about their dams. That sire and his dam may both be

gone before we have much information. While there are still many outstanding and beautiful cows in our Holstein breed, they are not as well- known and idolized as they once were. We have fewer magazines and less advertising to draw attention to them. As I read pedigrees in sale catalogs some of those special names still appear, however as the years roll by they are slowly disappearing and the names taking their place are not recognized. Many registered Holsteins today aren’t even full names, they are mainly numbers. It saddens me and it is a sad change for the history of the Holstein breed. Can you name the cows that hold the top production awards for milk, butterfat and protein in the Holstein Breed? Can you name the cow that was Grand Champion Holstein and Supreme Champion at the 2021 World Dairy Expo? She is Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. Who will win the top award in 2022? Will the 2022 Grand Champion Holstein have an opportunity to contribute to the future of the breed and become well-known among Holstein breeders everywhere? Will the breeders who like to include type when making their mating decisions have an opportunity to use a son of the Expo Champion? Will she have the chance to become a “flower of the breed” and a part of Holstein History? Will there be those legendary cows and memories made by them for the future Holstein breeders? The answers to questions like that will only come with time and the future.

On the National Front A big THANK YOU to the South Dakota and Minnesota Holstein Associations for an enjoyable and educational experience at the 2022 National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls. Congratulations to our new President and Vice President Jonathan Lamb and John Burket, the Association is in good hands. Congratulations also to Jeff King, NY and Joshua Wright, Idaho as new additions on the National Board. In addition, Bill Genasci, CA., and Bob Webb, WI., were successful in their reelection for their second term on the Board. THANK YOU to Corey Geiger, John Marshman, and John Anderson for their years of service though the Covid period. Show season is wrapping up and wishing all the best for the exhibitors at the fall shows. The National Show Committee will be meeting later in October to go over judges lists, shows and the National show program. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me so they can be discussed at the meeting. I know for sure the Confirmation and Genetic Advancement committees will meet in October also. Several other committees will be meeting before our National Board Meeting in November. By the time you read this, the Fall Holstein America TV program will have already aired and should be available on YouTube. These broadcasts are very informational and educational. They have been producing Holstein America for 5 years now and all the past programs are easily seen on YouTube. Some homeschool groups are using the broadcasts in their curriculum. We need to encourage this and promote it to our local schools. There is also a video celebrating 100 years of the Distinguished Junior Member program, encourage our Holstein youth to get active in Holstein and apply for the DJM awards. The Juniors have many programs that are available, and some are year-round. The Virtual Interview Contest is under way at this time and will continue through November. Pleasant Meadow Sale Report

It was a beautiful summer day where friends, neighbors and Holstein enthusiasts gathered around on straw bales to watch and participate in the dispersal. Darrell Pidgeon

In Memoriam

Darrell Pidgeon, 83, of Parker, Colorado, passed away June 24, at The Denver Hospice, Denver, Colorado. Darrell was the husband the former Ann Lage. Eldridge, Iowa. The couple met in the Guernsey barn at the 1961 National Dairy Cattle Congress, in Waterloo. Darrell parlayed two Guernsey heifers purchased when he was a 10-year-old 4-H boy into a lifetime career in the dairy cattle industry. After graduating from Wilmington High School, he received BS in Dairy Science from The Ohio State University. Darrell paid his way through OSU traveling across the country –- often by boxcar -– working as a cattle fitter and showman. Thanks to his keen eye for good cattle, Darrell won the national collegiate dairy judging contest as a member of the OSU dairy judging team in 1964 and received the Dairy Shrine Kildee Scholarship for graduate study. He obtained a master’s degree in Dairy Genetics from the University of Missouri. Upon graduation he joined American Breeder’s Service, DeForrest, Wisconsin as a young-sire analyst. Darrell and Ann were married September 27, 1969, at in Davenport, Iowa, and spent part of their honeymoon riding in a boxcar with nine Holstein heifers from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, to the Western National Holstein Show in San Francisco. The couple moved to Colorado in 1970 when Darrell became a partner and herd manager at Paclamar Farms, Louisville. Darrell was introduced to the cattle export business when the Paclamar herd was sold to an Italian businessman, and he rode in the plane with the cows when they were flown from Denver to Rome. For the next twenty-five years, Darrell pioneered a global movement of dairy animals to countries with great need to improve their dairy herds and milk production. Working with Dave Bachman, he arranged the export of U.S. Holstein heifers to Eastern Europe when trade was just opening with those Communist countries. Darrell vividly recalled that armed soldiers met the cattle planes when they landed in Budapest, Hungary, and intently watched the unloading. Darrell had a ground-breaking opportunity with the Inter-American Development Bank in l977, when the bank launched Prodel, an ambitious project to provide a more wholesome and stable milk supply to Mexico City. Darrell traveled with Prodel officials and Mexican dairymen to select 24,000 Holstein bred heifers from the U.S. and Canada, opening new markets for high-quality grade North American heifers. Darrell and Ann returned to Colorado in 1980 and formed their own export entity, Pidgeon Cattle Co., focusing on exportation of Registered Holsteins to the Asian market. In September 2021, Darrell was recognized by the National Dairy Shrine as a Dairy Pioneer for his entrepreneurial work in the dairy cattle export business that helped open and develop markets for U.S. Holstein cattle around the world. The Missouri Hall of Dairy Honors recognized Darrell for his Meritorious Service to the dairy industry in January 2022. Darrell was passionate about The Ohio State Buckeyes and attended games whenever possible, including five Rose Bowls, an Orange Bowl, two Holiday Bowls, a Cotton Bowl, and two Nation36

al Championship games. He was a fifty-yard-line Denver Broncos season ticket holder for thirty-three years. He was an avid toy tractor collector and had 450 tractors in his collection at its peak. Darrell is survived by his wife, daughter Marla and her partner Amy Hagerman, Denver; son Andrew, his wife Kelly and their two sons Graham 10 and Brady 7, McLean, Virginia; sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Janie Pidgeon, Wilmington; Richard and Jane McCurdy, Goodyear, Arizona; Dean and Karen Potratz, Pewaukee, Wisconsin; and three nephews, Kyle Pidgeon, Wilmington; John Potratz, Brooklyn, New York; and Daniel Potratz, Waukesha, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his Leonard and Thelma Pidgeon and a brother Phillip Pidgeon, all of Wilmington. Memorials can be made to National Dairy Shrine, Ft. Kathleen A. Ackley Kathleen A. Ackley of East Liberty, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Green Hills Center in West Liberty. A 1950 graduate of Pleasant High School in Marion, she went to work for a few years at Marion Power Shovel. Most of her life she was a homemaker and true farmer’s wife, she had a strong work ethic and never hesitated to step up and help in the barn if Bob was working late in the fields. She was affectionately known to be a “little” set in her ways and was an excellent cook, especially with desserts. She enjoyed crocheting, reading romance novels, going shopping, shopping on QVC and watching The Price is Right, the Cincinnati Reds and O.S.U. Basketball. She also enjoyed going to cow sales with Bob, attending the state fair to watch the cow shows and her favorite treats from McDonald’s and KFC. Most of all, she loved her many dogs over the years, especially her Chihuahuas, Bulldog and purebred German Shepherds. Born August 17, 1933 in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Helen (Landon) Almendinger. After meeting at a square dance at the Richwood Fair, she married her husband of nearly 61 years, Robert G. Ackley and he preceded her in death on October 4, 2016. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Almendinger and her brothers-in-law, Albert and Halley “Merle” Ackley. She is survived by a daughter, Janice (Brian) Atterholt of DeGraff; a son, Jay (Kristy) Ackley of East Liberty; grandchildren, Kris Ackley of East Liberty, Kyle (Morganne) Ackley of East Liberty, Dylan (Amanda) Atterholt of DeGraff and Paige (Jacob) Donofrio of Tiffin; great grandchildren, Flint Atterholt and Kinnley and Maddux Ackley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dianne Almendinger of Delaware, Dave (Phyllis) Ackley of West Liberty, Shirley Applegate of Marysville and Rebecca Ackley of Zanesfield; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Logan County Dairy Association Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

Donald Francis Divins Donald Francis Divins 93, of Clarksfield Township, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at his home. He was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Toledo, the son of the late Forrest and Loretta (Ludwig) Divins. Don moved to Clarksfield Township in 1939 when he was 11 years old. He began helping with the family dairy and farming operation. In 1960, he took over the farms, known as Double-D Farms, and retired in his late eighties. On January 23, 1954, he married Bonnie Lou Rider and they were married 53 years. In 1955, they purchased and lived at Bonnie’s family farm where she was born. Together they raised four children. Don was a very hard worker and didn’t stop until the job was done. He was especially proud of his family and farm. He was awarded “Outstanding Young Farmer” in the early 60s. His family showed cows at Huron and Lorain County fairs for many years. He was very proud of his hand raised Monitor Cow that he won District 8 Holstein Sr Breeders Division in 1995. She was also Grand Champion at Lorain Co. Fair. He served as a board member at Landmark (Sunrise) many years. He and his wife loved to travel. They traveled all over the United States and went on several cruises. Don loved to drive. When on family vacations, he was on a mission to get to the planned destination in a timely manner. You had better not ask to stop to use the restroom. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, riding snowmobiles, and was a member of Wakeman Snow Ballers Club. He also enjoyed going to car races at Sandusky and Attica and watching Ohio sports teams. When at a wedding you could always find him on the dance floor “Happy Feet”. Don had a bark that would stop you in your tracks if you got out of line. His children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren all experienced that at one time or another. Deep down he was a teddy bear. Don was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He attended regularly until he was unable. He had unquestioning faith. Family would often hear prayers and amen when staying with him. He had a great smile and was always ready for a picture. Don is survived by his children, Debra Collins (Rick Hall), Denise (Joe) Riley, Danette Rankine (Mark Hardy), and Dean (Doris) Divins; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Elizabeth “Liz” A. Thornton, of Apple Creek, returned to Heavenly Father on Tuesday morning, August 2, 2022 at her home following a short courageous battle with cancer. Her loving family was with her. She was born on March 9, 1955 in Pocatello, Idaho to William Alva and Ethel (Jolley) Borders. Since her father was a career military officer she lived in several states and Germany while growing up. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while a senior at Nampa High School in Idaho. Liz attended Ricks College and Boise State University participating in theatre and music programs. Liz married Royce B. Thornton on June 13, 1978 at the Idaho Falls Temple in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He survives. After accompanying Royce as he completed college degrees at Cal Poly and Penn State, she assisted Royce in operating Sagewind Jerseys in Kuna, Idaho. They moved from Idaho to Apple Creek in 1983 and she became a devoted homemaker for her family. She once

said that her occupation was “domestic goddess.” She loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother … her family was her life. In addition to her family, the gospel of Jesus Christ was her second great passion. She was a member of the Wooster Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served many individuals in various capacities: music, compassionate service, teacher, mentor, and several leadership roles. She was an avid reader and listener of audio books; enjoyed music and theatre; frequently played board and card games with her family; with a “labor of love” she cooked, sewed, and quilted to please her family; delighted in Christmas and birthdays; had a great sense of humor; spent considerable time researching ancestors and family history; and enjoyed travel, historic sites, nature’s beauty, flowers, and not-too-primitive camping with her family. In addition to her loving husband, and her father of Las Vegas, she is survived by her children, Jennifer Anne (Bob) Brightman of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Emily Marie (Seumas) Hodges of Kuna, Idaho, Cari Elise (Kyle) Buckley of Meridian, Idaho, Christopher Brian Thornton and Hammond Lavar Thornton both of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Nathanial Royce Thornton of Dover, Ohio and Elizabeth Ralene (Sean) McGuire of Orrville, Ohio; 15 grandchildren including, William, Matthew, Michael, Evelyn, and Charlotte Brightman, Hallie and Burke Hodges, Hannah, Liam, Timothy, Haylie, Lydia, and Benjamin Buckley, Thalia and Thane McGuire; a brother, W. Alexander Borders of Concord, California; a sister, Susan (Tom) Montieth ; numerous other family members and a host of friends. She is preceded in death by her mother. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humanitarian Fund - Wooster Ward.

It’s been a busy summer for Ohio Holstein women as they have been active at their district shows and family activities on the farm. A favorite of all farm families are those gatherings that involve a potluck dinner. One of Louise Harding’s potluck passing dish is what she brought to the recent board meeting of the Ohio Holstein Association. Make and enjoy!

Grape Salad 1 8oz package of cream cheese 1 cup of sour cream 1/3 cup of sugar 5 lbs of red grapes – washed and dried 1 cup of pecans ½ cup brown sugar Whip together cream cheese, sour cream, and sugar. Mix in grapes. Place in a bowl and top with the mixture of pecans and brown sugar. Chill.

Save the Date for the 2023 Ohio Holstein Convention

The 2023 Ohio Holstein Convention will be hosted by District 3, March 3 & 4th at the Wingate by Wyndham/Undo’s, St.Clairsville. There will be two stops for farms tours this year at Cain Farm & Plainfield Farm. We will also be having the Ohio Holstein Convention Sale on Friday evening with hors d’ oeuvres being offered. Reservations may be made by calling the hotel at 740-695-3961. Rooms have been reserved under the Ohio Holstein Convention until February 3, 2023 or until all rooms have been filled. The cost is $109 plus 13.25% tax. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
