Summer has arrived, and that means more help on the farm! Paige Bertke, daughter of Damon and Jackie Bertke of Stein-Way Dairy, enjoys feeding the calves on their family farm. Damon is featured in this issue as the Junior Buckeye Breed Builder Award winner, and you can learn about Stein-Way Dairy on page 8. Also, this issue features the OHA membership directory sponsored by ADA Mideast. We thank them for their continued support of Ohio Holstein breeders! This spring has been full of very successful sales here in the Buckeye State. If you want quality animals of any breed, Ohio is the place to be. In late April, it was a weekend full of sales. On Friday, April 21, we started the weekend with the Ohio Spring Sale. Sixty-four lots crossed the sale ring. They averaged right at $2100. Topping the sale was Oakfield US Adore-Red-ET. She is a junior two-year-old for this year and was springing to Altitude. Adore found a new home at Genetics Link, Avella, PA. The sale goers moved from Wooster to Circleville to celebrate the Best of Triple-T and Heath. Friday evening many folks gathered to pay tribute to Michael Heath and to show their support for his family. Michael was a friend to many and had an eye for a good cow that was second to none. He will be sorely missed by our industry. Saturday morning brought buyers out from across the country to bid on outstanding Jerseys and Holsteins. In this sale, 144 lots crossed the sale ring and averaged $6642. The top selling Jersey was Big Guns Kid Rock Villa-ET who sold for $35,000. The top selling Holstein had just been named Jr. Champion at the Maryland Spring Show. Peace & Plenty Tato Julien-ET sold for $32,000. Both of these animals found new homes at Glamourview in Maryland.

On Monday, the sale was in Wapakoneta. Quietcove Holsteins hosted the Spring Colors Sale. This sale featured Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss. In all, 77 head went through the sale ring. They averaged $5661. Topping the sale in the Jersey breed was a Victorious winter calf out of the well-known Hinds Colton Dream EX97 from Keightly-Core Jerseys in Kentucky. This calf sold for $35,000 to Vierra Dairy, Michael Hurst and Vrent Van Vooren. In the Swiss breed, the top selling animal was Edge View D Wrigley-ETV. This senior two-year-old sold for $30,000 to Long Lane Farm in Indiana. The high selling Holstein was a red and white winter calf sired by Altitude. She brought $13,100 and sold to a group of breeders from Ohio. A review of these sales will tell you that the very best animals, no matter what the breed, are found right here in our own state. A glance at the buyer’s list from each of these sales will show that folks from California to Maine know that as well. Animals

from these sales went to all corners of the country. If you are looking to add a great animal to your herd, you need look no further than your back yard because the best cattle are right here. Enjoy the warm weather. Let’s get the corn planted and the first cutting hay made. Be safe out there as you hurry to get crops in the ground. I look forward to seeing all of you at the summer shows.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Chris Lahmers

The temperature outside finally feels like spring/summer is here. We have waited a long time but things are finally warming up. It has been a busy spring in Ohio with registered Holsteins. Especially, the weekend of April 21st. Ohio was host to three sales in four days that weekend. The Ohio Spring sale started things off on Friday the 21st. The sale was a success with an average price of $2,155. I would like to thank everyone who was involved with this event. That includes the consignors and the selection and sale committees. I would especially like to thank Ken Janes and Wyatt & Logan Schlauch for all of their hard work. Also, a big thank to those who supported the sale with their donations including, Greg Cornish from Walnut Hills Feeds, Hannah Simpson from Heritage Cooperative and KJR Trucking. The sales continued on Saturday with the best of Triple T & Heath Sale in Circleville. The sale had a different feel to it with the recent passing of Michael Heath. Everyone did a fantastic job of paying tribute to Michael during the sale and the evening before. I was not as close with him as some, but I always admired his passion for the purebred cattle industry, no matter the breed. That passion and dedication will be greatly missed in the industry.

The Spring Colors at Quietcove ended the sales week. Like they have done in the past, the Elsass family hosted a great event. The sale offered a little something for everyone. The cattle were presented well and prices remained strong all the way to the end. Spring Dairy Expo was a success again this year as 510 head were exhibited over all of the breeds. The Spring Dairy Expo committee continues to work hard to keep this event running smoothly and efficiently. ADA Mideast once again sponsored a pizza dinner during showmanship. We appreciate Scott Higgins and the ADA staff for all the work they do promoting Ohio’s dairy industry and especially for sponsoring this membership issue of the Ohio Holstein News. Be sure to say thank you the next time you see one of them. It looks to be a busy summer with District Shows, the National Convention in Kentucky and the Ohio State fair right around the corner. It is a hectic time in our household with my oldest daughter, Elaina graduating from high school. She will be headed to the University of Kentucky this fall to study Early Childhood Development. It is very hard to believe that this is possible since I just graduated high school a couple of years ago! Have a great summer,

JUNIOR BUCKEYE BREED BUILDER CREDITS SUCCESS TO

Learning from Others Story by Melissa Hart Photos by Sarah Thomas As the sixth generation on his farm, Damon Bertke has a solid foundation of knowledge and experience to fall back on - but his determination to do better keeps him on the learning curve of breeding a sound herd of Registered Holsteins. As the Ohio Holstein Association Junior Buckeye Breed Builder award winner for 2023, Bertke said he has learned from the best in the business. “I showed in 4-H, but it wasn’t until I got out and started working for Buschur Dairy that I started to understand the registered side of the Holstein business,” he noted. “Everything I learned at Buschur’s, I would bring home and implement on the farm. (Owner) Steve Buschur had a lot of influence on Ohio genetics and hanging around with him gave me the opportunity to network with others at Select Sires, like Jeff Ziegler, whom I love to bounce ideas off of and I would have never met Jeff if it weren’t for working at Buschur’s.” The herd has a current BAA of 110.8 on 120 head, but that didn’t come overnight or without help. Bertke’s parents, Dave and Jane, are full-time on the farm, while his wife, Jackie, works at a local insurance agency and his sisters, Laura Bertke and Nicole Weubker, fill in as needed.

In 2020 they built a new barn for the highend cows, while all the heifers are raised off the farm. When Damon Bertke was a senior in high school his parents told him he couldn’t go on his senior trip to Myrtle Beach - so he bargained for a trip to World Dairy Expo

instead. “I ended up going up to Expo for three days. At age 18 I thought I knew what I was getting into, but I had no idea. I was blown away.” His desire to breed type cows began to snowball from there, and he went to the state fair the following year. “I said to myself, ‘man, I want to be a part of this! This is fun!’” The herd began with a focus on productive type. “They didn’t all have to be

show cows, but I wanted to breed solid cows that scored well and milked,” Bertke said. “I always knew Loren Elsass from walking the cows at Buschur’s, and I really respected his eye for cattle. I would talk to him about breeding decisions, and that led to the opportunity to work with Jeremy Elsass.”

started and then I began working with Jay and Kristy, and they have taught me so much in the last few years; it’s been a fun working relationship,” he explained. “Once or twice a summer they come out to the farm and look at our herd, and they have shown interest in our genetics.”

Ms Woods Valley Jewel was a purchase from the Quietcove Tag Sale and they flushed her to Corvette. “We got nine eggs, eight pregnancies and seven heifer calves. One of them was Bertke Cor Josey, who ended up being EX-91 and is the granddam of Stein-Way Doc Jasper,” he said.

In 2017, Bertke GC Bentley was just fresh as a 2-year-old when he wondered if she was a “next level” cow. He put his hunch to the test and asked Jeremy Elsass of Quietcove Holsteins in Wapakoneta, Ohio, if he would take a look at her.

In summer 2022, the Ackleys and he attended Mike and Julie Duckett’s sale in Wisconsin and the Ackleys came home with Ms Glamourview L Beyonce-ET. Jay was fond of Stein-Way Tatoo 1104 EX-90, and so they and Bertke struck a deal and swapped half for half ownership. “Now we are partners on Beyonce and the Tatoo.” Beyonce is a Lambda daughter that was recently scored VG-85.

Jasper is now EX-94 and has embryos by Parfect and Tatoo, and her Dempsey daughter scored VG-87 as a 2-year-old. “We got that great cow all because of one cow from Jeremy’s tag sale who was never shown because she tragically broke her leg right after we flushed her.”

Bertke sold part interest in the cow to Jeremy, and that started the partnership with Quietcove. “The more I learned, the stronger our relationship got. And I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Jeremy. He taught me a lot.”

We have four daughters, and three of them went EX-91. One of the great-granddaughters showed as a 2-year-old at the spring show this year.”

Snagging the Junior Buckeye Breed Builder Award was a goal achieved. “As soon as I learned what that award was, I knew I wanted to win it because it was all based on my peers. When I found out I won, I realized that I was actually getting somewhere - and it meant a lot to me.”

“When she came off the trailer at Quietcove, Jeremy looked at me like I was crazy and said, ‘This heifer is really, really good.’ He took her to spring show and she was third, and I was tickled pink to place that well with a home-bred cow.” In 2018 Bentley came in second in the National Holstein Futurity at the Ohio State Fair.

The Stein-Way herd has a 75- to 80-pounds milk herd average with 4.4 fat and 3.3 protein on a high-forage diet. They are fed about 57 pounds of dry matter, including baleage, corn silage and grain.

The current herd has 100 Holsteins and 20 Brown Swiss. The scoring totals are continued on page 10

Current herd sires include Tatoo, Doc, Parfect, Renegade, Harmony, Hancock, Hulu RC, Luster P, Hanx P, Pearce, Altitude-Red, Jordy-Red, Alpha RC and Energy. Even with this award, Bertke still has a list to work on. “I would love to breed a committee cow, be in the center of the ring with a homebred cow that gets tapped for champion, have a sale to market our genetics, earn an All-Ohio every year and breed an All-American,” he ticked off. He and Jackie have three daughters: Paige, 8, Maddie, 5, and Hannah, 5 months. “Paige and Maddie love being outside with the calves. I would love to let them take a group of calves to the county fair and just have fun,” Bertke said. His advice for those coming up is to “not get too high, don’t ever get too low, keep your nose down and keep working.

“I hope I can give my daughters the opportunity to succeed with cows. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the generations ahead of me and the effort my family has put into the farm.”

Hi everyone, At the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo I had the opportunity to pass out awards to Holstein exhibitors! It was my first show since becoming the Ohio Holstein Queen and I enjoyed watching the show and congratulating exhibitors. As summer approaches I look forward to the district shows, state fair and the opportunity to share why the Registered Holstein cow is so important to the dairy industry. I hope everyone has a great summer and I hope to see you at The Ohio State Fair, District shows, and National Holstein Convention!

Hi everyone! This is Alice Whiteleather here as your Ohio Holstein Junior Association reporter. As our busy show season is approaching, I hope everyone is geared up for a successful show season. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the voucher program! The junior voucher program is a great way to promote our sales and youth involvement at the same time. At the spring sale we had several vouchers used by youth and here’s how it works: all juniors present at the sale who are interested in purchasing an animal enter their name in a drawing for a voucher. Each voucher is provided when

someone donates money for the voucher program and it can range from $100$250 per voucher. When a youth’s name is drawn, if they buy and animal, they will receive money off of the purchase price, depending on how much their voucher is worth. The voucher helps the sale and helps the youth buy a project; a win-win all the way around. At our spring sale, Carter Gleisner, Rylee Willrath, Landon Bankey and Cole Hudson all received vouchers and purchased heifers at the sale. The vouchers were donated by Ben & Hannah Simpson, Ken & Kaye Hanes, BillyBob Genetics and

Velvet-View Farm. This is a great program, and I cannot express how much I am grateful for the amazing people who donated to this wonderful program. As a new showing season is about to begin, keep working hard with your animals and I hope you have an amazing time at the upcoming shows. If you are showing or participating in dairy judging or handling, good luck. I hope to see you at so many upcoming district, county and state fairs. Rylee Willrath of New Bremen, Ohio purchased lot 41, Miss BVWS Analysts Dede-Red consigned by Jamison Gilbert. Her name was drawn for a voucher and she said she had not even thought about purchasing a heifer at the sale until her name was drawn for the voucher. This is what she wrote in her thank-you note: When they called my name for the winning voucher, I knew exactly which one I wanted. She is a beautiful heifer. My mom told me that she didn’t think that another breed or animal could take my heart away from Brown Swiss but Miss Dede for sure took at least part of it. I am happy to be an Ohio Junior Holstein member and I’m excited to show Miss Dede at our Auglaize County Fair. Also, I hope to be able to go to the state fair with her. An Ohio Dairy Woman’s Journal

I work at Pine-Tree Dairy, our family-owned farm run by my dad and some of his siblings. We milk at five locations but calve everyone at the main location, then when needed I send them to the other locations around three weeks fresh. I spend most of my time at the main dairy where I manage the cows’ health and reproduction. I do a lot with our genetic program, as well. We have an IVF satellite at our farm. We IVF a decent amount of our heifers every two weeks, using over 95% of our cows and heifers as recips. Thursday, April 20th Started the morning checking on fresh cows and treating those who needed it. Then went to the robot farm to check on things and worm the cows there. Friday, April 21st Recorded heats from our SCR, most will get embryos but a small percentage of our cows with high numbers will be AI bred. Went to the Ohio Spring Sale and bought a heifer for myself and a cow for the dairy. Saturday, April 22nd Sent a load of cows to one of our other farms and brought cows to go dry back as we calve in all our cows at the main dairy. Then put embryos in 7 of our cows. Sunday, April 23rd Sundays are when I check fresh cows and record heats. The rest of the day I relaxed. Monday, April 24th Today is our IVF day. We have our IVF heifers at two locations so we get who we need and bring them to the dairy. We started at 8:30 and finished at 4 with our 42 IVF donors. Tuesday, April 25th It was again IVF day, but today it was mostly haul-ins. So other cows that breeders bring to us to be IVF’d. I helped with that most of the day. Organizing trailers, semen and embryos. Wednesday, April 26th In the morning I checked fresh cows and the health of the rest of our cows. We also put some embryos in at the main dairy. Later my dad and I went to one of our heifer farms to do pregnancy checks Thursday, April 27th Started the day the same as always, checking cow health and recording heats. The hoof trimmer was here today so I made the list and made sure they got sorted out. The rest of the day was registering all calves born this past week and I put a couple embryos in. 14

Saturday, April 29th Today was a slower than average day. My dad and I did a DA surgery and put in more embryos. Sunday, April 30th Just another Sunday, checked on fresh cows and recorded heats then spent the rest of the day relaxing. Monday, May 1st We did a herd check at one of our dairy farms and I worked on registering calves. In the afternoon we put a decent amount of embryos in. Tuesday, May 2nd I started making the IVF list for next week and worked on choosing a sire for them. We have a team that comes up with sires for IVF, so we each have a number of donors we call “ours” that we pick a mating sire for each time. Once I finish the list, I send it in to the team at Transova so they can schedule and get everything ready for the next week. Wednesday, May 3rd Today was an average day. I went to one of our other dairies to pick up dry cows and bring them back, and did the normal of checking heats and cow health. Thursday, May 4th This morning I entered embryos from one of our heifer facilities. Later I went to get a lot of heifers that are close to calving. We normally bring them over to the main dairy when they’re around 21 days from calving. Friday, May 5th Tomorrow is the Midwest Revue Brown Swiss sale at the fairgrounds in Wooster and we are interested in a couple so I went to look at them. There are definitely some I like.

Got ‘the Bug’ from His Dad Story and Photos by Sarah Thomas For nearly 100 years, the Indoe family has worked with the Holstein breed. Bill Indoe’s great-grandfather was a member of the then Holstein-Friesian Association of America and his grandfather, Kenneth, later managed and owned the farm in 1937. When Bill “hit the ground” in the 1960s, he was immediately surrounded by the industry and what it offered. An abundance of small herds around his home farm at that time still used herd sires and natural breeding. “I remember a semi coming to the farm to load cows and then travel to Waterloo and Madison. I was so curious,” said Bill. He got his start in 4-H at the Medina County Fair showing his heifer, Vanessa. “You know? We were dead last, but that calf followed me around like a dog and we had fun.” He attended The Ohio State University for Dairy Science from 1979-83. It was there he formed foundational friendships that have easily tested time. “We got in before the school was getting more strategic with test scores,” he laughed. Jeff Ziegler, David Thorbahn and Todd Kranz are among the plethora of names he lists, his face lighting up talking about friends, colleagues and the dairy judging 20

team (4-H and collegiate). He was coached by the late Peter Spike, Ph.D. and has carried those lessons throughout his life. “Despite how you placed, you got to travel and meet people - it’s hard to beat that.”

Bill’s father, Richard, was famous for showing at Chicago, Waterloo, Madison and the North American - both in Columbus and Louisville. “It’s no wonder I got the ‘bug’ for it,” he said, with a smile. “I was fortunate to have the opportunities I did. My father and grandfather showed at the national levels early on. Not many people get to say that.”

He also expressed how proud he is of his niece, Jenny Thomas, of Triple-T. “She got her start here, and I’m proud to say that.” Having a faithful mascot is vital to any farm. Bill’s new pup, Molly, has big shoes to fill after his faithful companion Maggie passed away recently.

On the Holstein Association USA website are cattle with the “Richman” prefix dating all the way back to 1940, though the family was involved long before that. They had their first All-American nomination in the 1960s, but Bill’s first homebred AllAmerican occurred in 1997. “Starmist Milan Jaelyn was special. We bought her dam in a partnership, an 86-point Tempo from Canada that later went EX-94,” he said. “I think everybody should get the chance to experience what it’s like to show at Madison. It’s just special. You don’t even feel your feet. Your hands are sweating. You keep thinking to yourself, ‘Don’t mess up. Everybody is watchin’ you!’” Jaelyn went on to be nominated AllAmerican twice as a heifer and was scored VG-86 as a 2-year-old. She lived to be 17 and is buried on the farm. “I didn’t sell her like I should have because she was a special homebred animal for me,” said Bill. “I learned the importance of selling after that.”

The quality of people here is second to none!” He also expressed his encouragement for all farm sizes to begin and stay involved with their state, and national, associations. “Their involvement is a must. It makes us who we are.”

When asked about the Senior Buckeye Breed Builder Award, Bill was more solemn. “I am so touched that people even Richman Farms has undergone many changes over the years, but the white barns with green roofs have remained.

His breeding philosophies have been crafted over the years. “In the ‘70s, when more people were involved in showing, we bred heavy for type because you could sell those cows - and they were big. Too big, honestly,” he noted, with amusement. “Now it’s totally different. Genomics is intriguing and many people have switched to a genomics mindset because not as many people are showing any more. Today’s genetics are very similar from top to bottom - this goes for males and females. The Spring Colors at Quietcove Sale was the third of three sales in four days held on Ohio where over a million dollars were spent on cattle from Wooster to Circleville to Wapakoneta. The Elsass family gathered an offering

of cattle that included Brown Swiss, Jerseys, Holsteins and Red & Whites. The final average of 77 head was $5661. Topping the entire sale and the high selling Jersey was lot 8 at $35,000 was the Jersey Fall calf sired by Victorious out of the National Champion, Total Performance

winner and everyone’s favorite, Hirds Colton Dream EX 97. She was consigned by Keightley-Core and Frank & Diane Borba and purchase by Vierra Dairy, Michael Hurst and Vrent Van Vooren. The second high seller and the high selling Brown Swiss was lot 4 at $30,000. She was Edge View D Wrigley-ETV, a Daredevil Sr. 2-Year-Old out of Wizella and then Top Acres Supreme Wizard from the famous Whizzbang family. She was consigned by the Buckleys and Saltzman’s of Lawrenceburg, KY and purchased by Long Lane Farm of Indiana. The high selling Red & White at $13,100 was a Winter calf sired by Altitude out of Quitecove-Edge Pop Quiz-ET RC VG-87 and the renown Dundee Paige family. She was consigned by Greyson Elsass and purchased by Judy Wolford. Ryan Krohlow was the auctioneer while Norman Nabholz read pedigrees. The sale was managed by Hammertime Auctions.

Spring Finally Sprung

By Barb Lumley The rain finally stopped, the sunshine came out and dried up the rain, and farmers headed for the fields, some of them not stopping from daylight to dark or later! With those seeds in the ground, in some areas already growing, hopefully farmers everywhere can take a little break, enjoy a second cup of coffee and relax. But not for long! It’s time to chop for silage and it is hay making time! Nothing smells better than newly mowed hay! Too bad the people living in the cities never get to enjoy it or understand the joy it brings to those of us who live on the farm and in the country. Some in my area plan to take off the first crop of hay and then plant the fields in more corn. Every time those tractor wheels turn or those beautiful draft horses lean into the harness, farmers everywhere are praying that Mother Nature will work with them, giving the weather needed for good growth of the crops, and allow them a plentiful and profitable harvest in the fall. For all of our dairy farmers, small or large, those crops being successful is essential for the production they are seeking from their herd. For many that herd average or average pounds per day in the bulk tank is the goal they want to achieve. It requires huge amounts of high quality feed and forage for every cow in the herd and every heifer being raised as a replacement or for merchandising. Some dairy families, and especially the children, will be looking through the calf and heifer pens, checking birth dates, making sure registrations have been sent in, and looking for that special heifer that takes their eye, as they select the registered Holsteins that they plan to show for their 4-H or F.F.A. project or at their local district show. Ohio’s first county fair will be held in June and the county fairs will continue through September. Along the way will be the opportunity to participate at Ohio Holstein District Shows and at the Ohio State Fair. Who knows, that heifer just might be good enough to enter at The All-American or World Dairy Expo. Your local district shows need everyone’s support. As the number of dairy herds in every county gets smaller, resulting in less exhibitors, and the prices to rent a county fairgrounds and barns for shows increases, it has become more difficult for each district to hold their own show. Some have combined districts, others are holding All-Breed shows. On June 17, 2023, the District 3 Holstein Club will hold an All Breeds show at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds, Dover, Ohio. Everyone is welcome to load up the trail-

er and come and participate! There will be special prizes for both Supreme Champion and Supreme Junior Champion of the Open Show and Supreme Champion and Supreme Junior Champion of the Junior Show. I encourage everyone to find a way to support our youth and your district shows. If you can afford it, give a monetary contribution. District shows have many expenses — fairgrounds and barn rental, judge’s fees, awards, manure disposal, etc. Districts do their best to provide awards for the youth. If you cannot give a donation, give of yourself. Volunteer to help in some way the day of the show. Registration papers and entries have to be checked, a good ring man is always needed, help junior members with unruly animals, or help with clean-up afterwards. If you can’t help in any of those ways, attend the show and encourage the youth. Clap, whistle or cheer with everyone when the winners are placed in the ring and just enjoy the show! The youth who take on the challenge of the show ring are some of the best our country has to offer. They accept responsibility, work hard and deserve your attention and support! Oh, by the way... if you are all caught up on the farm and can get away for a couple days, take a trip to the National Holstein Convention to be held June 23-27, 2023 in Lexington, Kentucky. Headquarters is the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriot Gold Resort & Spa. The National Holstein Sale will be held on Monday, June 26. You will not only see beautiful Holstein cows, you will also see beautiful farms and beautiful horses. Take the trip!

It was an emotional but festive day at the final sale in The Best of Triple-T and Heath series on April 22, 2023. Nathan and Jenny Thomas and Michael Heath selected and sold 144 lots of Holsteins and Jerseys, averaging $6,642 at the Pickaway County Fairgrounds in Circleville, Ohio.

Lot 1J - Rapid Bay Gorgeous Glisten-ET, VG-86% sold for $31,000 to Woodmohr Jerseys, Wis. Consigned by Jamie Black and Justin & Claire Burdette, Ny., this Vaden daughter was fresh March 2023. Her second dam, Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous EX-97-3ECAN, was Supreme Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2007 and 2009.

A well-attended sale preview and fellowship dinner was held at the grounds the evening before the sale, a time to look at the exceptional group of cattle for sure. But more importantly, this was a time to connect with friends within the industry and to reflect and remember Michael Heath. Sale morning dawned with a donation breakfast provided by friends of Michael Heath. All proceeds went toward the Michael Heath Legacy Fund. Other great donations, including a handcrafted model of Pensmith TJ Mindy 842 from Scott Hussey and Underground Milkshake Malibu-ET, had their proceeds feed the Michael Heath Legacy Fund as well.

Also selling for $31,000 was Lot 1 AG. This was a choice of two heifers from Faria Brothers Dairies, Tx. The buyers, Pine Tree Dairy, Ohio, chose the July 2022 Jalapeno daughter from FB Thrasher 692054-ET. At the time of the sale, she was the third highest CM$ Jalapeno daughter in the breed. While this was the last of The Best of Triple T and Health Sale series, we are sure to hear the names and achievements of those who sold for a lifetime.

After a full day of spirited bidding, banter and announcements from the sale box and exceptional Holsteins and Jerseys parading in the ring, the top selling lot was 24J – Big Guns Kid Rock Villa-ET, consigned by Madison Fisher, Md. This spring yearling was Junior Champion at the 2023 New York Spring Jersey Show and is a Kid Rock daughter of Big Guns Jamaica Vanilla, EX-95%. She was purchased by Glamourview Farm of Md., for $35,000. Glamourview Farm was also the buyer of the second highest selling lot in The Best of Triple T and Heath Sale, Lot 8H, Peace&Plenty Tato Julien-ET. A Holstein spring yearling with a Junior Champion banner of her own, this Tatoo daughter of Peace&Plenty OKB Jubie 7, EX-93, 2E was shown at the 2023 Maryland Spring Show. Daren will provide oversight and guidance to several core functions of the Genetic Services department, including software, production records programs, pedigrees, herd reports and award programs. In addition, he will be a key resource in questions related to HAUSA’s bylaws and policies, provide leadership to governance procedures including the Annual Meeting delegate process, and serve as staff liaison for the Nominating Committee and Legislative and Industry Affairs Committee. Checkoff’s new partnership with Raising Cane’s will drive dairy-focused menu innovation to

Pine Tree Dairy hosted a round table discussion, a sale and finished the event with lunch provided by the Steiner Family. It’s a tale as old as time - of faith, family, friends, fellowship and foundational cattle - at Pine-Tree Dairy in Marshallville, Ohio. The Pine-Tree Summer Auction and Roundtable Discussion kicked off on Thursday, June 1, with dinner and tours at Pine-Tree Dairy and followed with the discussion, then an auction Friday morning. Brothers Andrew and Ethan Steiner kicked off Friday’s roundtable with an array of topics including IVF strategies and ideas, traits of interest, making matings and

semen sourcing options. In reference to approaching IVF, one question of Ethan’s that stood out was, “Is it worth it to you to get just one embryo out of your donor cow?” If a donor is not making a lot of embryos via IVF, this may bring up conversations about pregnancy, shot schedules or asking if it’s the sire’s or donor’s flaw. The dialogue centered on auction attendees’ traits of interest, which ranged from physical to genotypic. Strength, front end, stature, front teat placement, teat length and high pins were among the

physical traits. Others worry about their cows withstanding heat in addition to Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR), Cow Conception Rate (CCR) and environmental impact. Some even expressed that they feel pressured to buy into the high-numbered bulls that have a negative DPR. Andrew’s teaching background inspired him to create a mock mating activity for the roundtable. Data on two donor animals were given to each person, in addition to five options for bulls to mate them. Everyone was encouraged to submit their sire choices for the donors to Andrew - even if it was a different sire not offered in the activity. Votes were compared to what the brothers thought of the matings. The Pine-Tree crew IVFs every two weeks and meets every two weeks to make mating decisions. “It’s an art,” said the Steiners. Deciding a mating is tricky, and it depends on what each donor brings to the table. Do you choose to breed high numbers to other high numbers? Or do you pick a “creative sire” as labeled by Ethan? The team votes on matings via “minority voting,” and each member is allowed to use one veto that day when deciding. Additionally, one person may receive a donor to then nominate bulls for her, for the rest of the team. This can depend on the

morale of the team concerning the donor - if she is making lots of embryos, do you spice up the sire variety? What if you have lots of embryos and their numbers fall? Do you keep going? How are your recipients? For sourcing semen, Pine-Tree has various game plans: conventional semen, sexed semen, semen with some restrictions, semen with buy-back contracts or owning the bull themselves. One approach at Pine-Tree is to simply analyze the calving and pre-fresh pen and ask: “Do I wish I had more of this or that?” High seller of the day was Lot 4, Pine-Tree 688 Lione 977-ET, for $160,000. She is an October donor heifer (Lionel x Highflier x Pursuit x Achiever) with a GTPI of +3186 averaging 49 oocytes per IVF. The sale was followed by a delicious lunch and dessert courtesy of the Steiner family.

Illinois-The Land of Lincoln by George Nichols was a reprint of an article written for the August 1972 issue of The A I Digest just prior to the 1972 Association of Animal Breeders annual convention in Chicago. It told the history of Illinois beginning in 1673 with the travels of Frenchman Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette. The schedule for the 90th Annual Convention was reported. Sunday June 22 had no planned activity but registration started and sale cattle were moved into tents in the hotel parking lot. Monday June 23rd was tours to Hartmann Farms at Dundee and Curtiss Breeding Service. The president’s reception was held in the evening. Tuesday June 24 was “early bird sessions”; one on the proposed new National Dairy Records Program. Later the 90th annual meeting would convene under the chairmanship of HFAA President Cliff Bailey. A “dutch treat” dinner was held in the evening. Thursday June 26th The Illini National Convention Sale was the climax of convention activities. The sale was held in the Great Ball Room of the Marriott Motor Hotel. Numerous activities were planned for the Ladies including an air-condition bus tour of Chicago, a lovely luncheon will be held at the famed American Furniture Mart, a fashion show and a tour of the Chicago Historical Society Museum. There will be numerous activities for the Juniors, including a square dance and get acquainted mixer, visiting the Chicago Board of Trade, Sears Tower, Shedd Aquarium, and the National Museum of Science and Industry. Rausch, Art Crocker, Charles H. Lewis, Don Crocker, Ivo H. Osterloh, Henry Gelbke, Reuben Jones, Myron W. Stryffeler, Robert Stewart, and Dale Ring. A lengthy article, “Plan For –A National Dairy Records Program” includes A Summary Of The Committee Report; the Objective of the National Dairy Records Program; Requirements To Attain Objective; and Organization and Procedures and recommendations from the committee. The report on the Kentucky National Sale-Show-Tour were featured. Topping the sale at $4300 was the 1st milking 2-year old and Reserve Grand Champion of the Kentucky National Show, Wapa Bootmaker Mandy VG 86, consigned by John Schlenker & Sons, Wapakoneta, Ohio, and purchased by Allison Place, Wapakoneta, Ohio. Mandy was a household name then and is still talked about today by Holstein historians as one of the greats. Over the years Mandy would grace the cover of both the Holstein-Friesian World and the Ohio Holstein News. Once again she was pictured on the cover of the May-June 2020 Ohio Holstein News, as the Ohio Holstein Association celebrated their 100th Anniversary. Seventy eight (78) consignments averaged $1300.87. The Western Ohio Heifer Sale was held March 15, 1975, at Springfield, Ohio. A total of forty three (43) registered Holsteins averaged $640.58. Topping the sale at $1400 was Wapa Bootmaker Prilly consigned by John A. Schlenker & Sons, Wapakoneta, Ohio, and purchased by Muddy Lane Farms, New Knoxville, Ohio. She was sired by Paclamar Bootmaker. Selling for $1250 was C Arborlawn Goldie consigned by John L. Carmichael, Bidwell, Ohio and purchased by Jerry Barr, Gallopolis, Ohio. She was sired by Romandale Reflection Security .Also selling for $1250 was Toppation Elevation Slipper consigned by Toppation Farm, New Bremen, Ohio and purchased by Dennis Thobe, Minster, Ohio. This issue of the Holstein-Friesian World featured numerous breeder ads for consignments in up-coming sales, ads for private sales, and ads by breeders featuring outstanding members of their herd and their bloodlines. Many were full page ads. The magazine was filled with pictures of outstanding registered Holsteins from all over the country. There was a total of 178 pages. Poverty Hollow, Newtown Conn., was featured on the back cover. They advertised eight (8) bulls from their Audrey family and promised to pay a jackpot of $25,000 to purchase the first EXCELLENT daughter with 20,000 pounds of milk and 800 pounds of fat actual (365 days) from any one of the bulls in the Audrey family that were listed.

The auctioneer’s gavel fell sixty three (63) times as the registered Holstein consignments, both live animals of all ages and embryo packages, were presented to the crowd on hand. The fifty-nine (59) live lots averaged $2,155. All sixty-three (63) lots combined average $2,129. Selling for $4,700 and topping the sale was Lot 1, Oakfield US Adore-Red-ET, consigned by Pine-Tree Dairy, Marshallville, Ohio and purchased by Genetics Link of PA. A bred heifer due May 14, 2023, to Altitude-Red, she was sired by Riverdown Unstopabull-Red and her dam, Colganados D Avianca-Red EX 96, 3E was the 2019

All-American R & W Aged Cow. Bred heifers averaged$2,627. Lot 4, Krullcrest Snapchat-Red ET, a winter yearling just recently bred to Rompen, sold for $4,000.
